The Mentalist Has a Premiere Date *and* a Series Finale Date; The Good Wife Is Taking a Break

The Mentalist's swan song is about to begin. On Tuesday, CBS confirmed what we've long suspected—that the Simon Baker drama's upcoming seventh season will be its last—and announced a series of scheduling changes that includes sidelining the The Good Wife until January, among other things.

Let's start with Patrick Jane: The Mentalist will premiere on Sunday, November 30 at 9:30pm Eastern / 9pm Pacific after a new episode of Madam Secretary (the different start times account for Sunday Night Football on the East Coast). The procedural will air in The Good Wife's Sunday timeslot for five weeks in a row before shifting to Wednesdays on January 7, ultimately rounding out its seven-season run with a two-hour series finale on February 18.

But The Good Wife isn't the only CBS drama that's taking a short recess for the holidays. Madam Secretary will spend December on Tea Leoni's horse farm, ultimately giving up its Sunday-night seat at the CBS dinner table to three special broadcasts of Undercover Boss on December 14, 21, and 28. Undercover Boss will then move to its regular Friday timeslot on January 2, and both The Good Wife and Madam Secretary will return on Sunday, January 4.

Finally, once The Mentalist and Undercover Boss make their respective moves to Wednesdays and Fridays, CBS will use the two shows to bridge the gap between the current and upcoming seasons of Survivor and The Amazing RaceSurvivor's Season 29 finale will air Wednesday, December 17, and The Amazing Race's Season 25 finale will air Friday, December 19; both shows will then return on Wednesday, February 25, with The Amazing Race switching to its regular timeslot on Friday, February 27.

A shame this is the last season ... other than Season 1, this is the best one yet. The Yellow House was lots of fun, as have been others, and the new girl and the techie flirting, Cho being his usual competent self, and Abbott being solid and steady.

I'm going to miss Emily Swallow, but the new agent with the military background is cool and seems to be in awe of Jane. I love when the techie explains to her that, yes, Abbott is in charge of the unit, except when Jane is! I also will be interested in seeing the relationship between Lisbon and Jane develop now that a commitment has been made.

The Premiere of the 7th Season of The Mentalist is a hoot. I loved it! Lots of smiles and chuckles. This is like I remember the first season being ... Jane steals the show with his psychic comments and deft insights. Bravo!!!!

Why do networks think that screwing around with schedules like this is the way to maintain viewers? It's not just CBS that does it, although this is a particularly convoluted case, and it gets really annoying really fast.

Apparently programme planners believe in magic. The magic of the schedule slot trumps quality and dramatic momentum every time. Apparently no one bothered to tell them or the Nielsen company about DVRs. This must be gospel, since all networks pull this crap. The High Priests of Programming at FOX are extra zealous on this bit of doctrine.

Why the fuck are they sidelining The Good Wife? That show is absolutely brilliant! It's a magnum opus of television! Why would you do that? To make room for The Mentalist? You gotta be freakin' kidding me. Wow!

Re "The Mentalist": I thought that last season was its last. The romantic "reveal" seemed like an ending point to me, so Iam gob-smacked to hear that it's airing again this year.

I enjoy watching it -- it's pretty staid, dependablewatching and I like the characters well enough -- but I probably wouldn't have missed it either.

I'm winning in my pick 'em league, so I can't complain, but I'll be glad when football is over so I don't have to record two shows to watch one.

No you aren't. I think American stations prefer to champion the stupider, cheaper shows, or those that are just remakes of comics or movies etc.

Intelligence and originality are fast losing their position.

Red John was the show and they even didn't solve everything connected with him - there were so many clues and mysteries. And by the way there were several significant clues that Jane is NOT Red John - people who think this would be great revelation are just stupid.

It's good we are getting something to watch over the holidays and it's good that this show is coming to an end! At least to my eyes, it got too boring and too predictable - especially after Red John was finally killed.
Knowing when to end a good show contributes to its greatness - and the Mentalist was a Great Show!

I'm hoping it turns out that Patrick was Red John all along. He's supposed to be the king of manipulation, this would be the biggest mind game he could play!

I think some sources are reporting that it was possible that Warner Bros. (which produces The Mentalist) could attempt to sell the series to a different channel. A popular crime show is pretty easily transferable from one network to another. I doubt this will happen. Not a good idea when a series has already announced its final season and then move to a cable channel for more original episodes. I don't see the point in that.

It's a possibility, but back when the show first aired, both Heller and the cast said that the show would have been six seasons (how many seasons the whole cast signed for) with a possible seventh final season.

Since it didn't come back in the fall it feels as if the show is over already. But the way they're doing it is a bit disappointing. They're essentially burning it off during the winter.

That's really not even a thing because all of the regular shows air in the winter.

Regular shows air from the fall through to the spring, but the winter months are slow months and during the holidays people aren't watching as much.

I hope Madam Secretary's hubby is having an affair to spice up the drama. It's genius to cover up a mistress blaming to be working for the NSA.

I couldn't disagree with you more! The successful marriage is the best thing about the show. I spent the whole time watching the last episode cursing them for going down that track only to be very relieved that it was just the NSA.

Shows like Survivor, along with Honey Boo Boo and Real Housewives of XXXX and American Idol, are shows that should NEVER have been produced. Now that they have, they lead the march towards the dumbing down of America, and the loss of quality television shows.

the series should have ended when red john was killed... even so... i was hoping it could reinvent itself by introducing a new arc so as to have the show continue... but the new premise did not quite take off from the red john case... my take on a finale... jane and lisbon call it quits after a big case that will be the main plot of the whole season... wherein some character deaths would make the whole season somber... maybe kill of the entire fbi team while they are after a serial bomber or something....
