The new TV.com!

redesign_revealed.jpg

-We went wide! More room to stretch out in--making it easier for you to see all that we have to offer.

showspace

-We cleaned our room! The site's been reorganized in the interest of dead-easy navigation, and all tabs have moved from the top to the left of each page--creating more front-and-center space for the good stuff. Clutter be gone!

frontdoor

-We're even bigger couch potatoes! We've added more video in more areas of the site. In-page video players with fun playlists abound! We now have a full episode directory within our video hub--full episodes all in one place. You can also find videos directly with our spiffy new video search. You may never go outside again...and we're okay with that.

-We admit it: we love stargazing! We've added more photo galleries throughout the site - they are glossier, bigger, and way more of a guilty pleasure than ever before. And since we know your opinions are the last word, we've added a comments section to each and every photo. Judge away!
*Heads up: the photo comments aren't ready just yet, but we promise they're coming soon!

-We still freaking love TV! Our News & Features editors are now more outspoken than they've ever dared to be; we've cleaned up our Shows hub so it's easier to get to the gold; and we've added a People hub full of info on your favorite actors and crew members.

-We're giving you the thanks you deserve! We truly appreciate you, our community. You make the site what it is today; you're the moon; you're the stars; you're everything we've ever dreamed of...so we're honoring you with a redesigned community hub featuring our favorite user blogs, extra recognition for editors, new profile pages, updated dashboard view, a convenient friend feed, and more. We've added more areas on the site to feature you, the star of the site.

The old format was nice AND Safari-friendly. I've actually started using Wikipedia more to avoid garbage like this:

"This page contains the following errors:
error on line 19 at column 3096: EntityRef: expecting ';'
Below is a rendering of the page up to the first error."

hey love the changes. Everyone must learn to adapt. One thing that is bothering me, is the usa site the same as the Aussie site now? i have a aussie flag in the back ground of the top left tv.com logo and there are aussie shows listed now too?? If you can let me know about these issues via email. Thanks

Hey, aussieaim01, I think you may've misread my comment. What I was trying to say was that we have every right to complain if we don't like the changes, regardless of how much time we've supposedly spent on the site. It was uncascrog implying that we "newbies" didn't have as much of a right to complain, and that we were all terrified of change. So, please re-read what I wrote, you'll find that I'm as unhappy with the site redesign as you are, and I'm standing up for our right to say so.

I TOTALLY AGREE WITH danac123! Where is the "All Shows" category where you can choose by the shows Year and Genre?

"Highest Rating" and "Most Popular" has Year and Genre but that is NOT what I'm searching for.

"Recently Added" I guess would be the closest for searching for "New Shows" but it cannot be broken down to Year and genre.

Well "adiav" if you think I'm having a sook then WHY have this comment section where people are SUPPOSED to add their opinions???? I too have used the US Version of TV.com and am a member for over a year now. So ... please TV.com either add sections that you had before or go back to original site.

Hey, uncascrog, I may only have registered this year, but I was using TV.com long before that - I just didn't see the need to actually register for the site. That said, it doesn't matter how long someone's been registered with TV.com - the point is, if they don't like the changes, they're allowed to say so. It's not being terrified of change, it's expressing a dislike OF the change, especially when it's couched in the terms of being something that we users requested, and no one's entirely sure when we were meant to have done that.

The site ISN'T fine. Grey on white is hard to read, and enforced localisation of content is telling us what we can see, and when we can see it. It's disgusting. And, since the site was redesigned, I'm completely unable to search for a TV show. I can look at "my shows", but anything entered into the search box comes up with a blank page, no matter whether I click on the "shows" tab, the "episodes" tab, or the "people" tab.

The saddest thing of all is that there are now nine (count them, 9) pages of comments, on the whole very unhappy with the changes on the site, and no comment addressing them.

The only good thing to come of the redesign was that TV shows got new mastheads/banners, meaning that shows such as NCIS (whose masthead was woefully out of date - they had a character who had been killed over two years ago in pride-of-place) have actually been updated.

So, settle, and quit it with the "my yardstick is bigger than your yardstick because I registered earlier" nonsense.

Just in case you are actually ARE "listening" (and I have to object to your statement above; I have been visiting this site daily for a couple of years and I have never seen a poll or been asked a question about content or site set up so who exactly were you listening to?) but anyway, just in case you are watching these comments, let me echo all the other comments; I hate the new layout, its very confusing and not at all easily accessible. but much more importantly, I have zero interest in the australian content - I come here to find out what is happening with my favorite shows - none of which are showing here in real time - in the USA. I LOVED the news feature that showed on the home page, the collection of new videos, and the whats on feature. Now that the news and video feature has disappeared, and by making me have to dig around to find information about individual shows by searching, you removed the whole point of this site and I am already migrating bit by bit to other sites to find the information I need and want. So disappointed.

You spoke and we listened.

Did you here it right? If so. How spoke? Not me that's for sure.

And I guess after reading some comments that I can be glad to live in Sweden. That has to be the reason I still have the American site (please let me keep it forever).

The design is so plain now. Much better before. C'mon, white? Make the right move and change it back.

We speak! You listen?

I'm totally in agreement with "Question7" I so enjoyed rating shows I liked, such as Bernie Mac and 2 1/2 Men. Q7 said it best!! Who is the fool that messed this up. What country is he'she from!! Surely not the USA. I will give it a month to correct and then I'm gone!

I am SO disappointed in your changes to the web site. For me they are NOT improvements at all. In fact, they are disabling the capabilities I previously enjoyed and there is NO "contact us" that is for real. Very POOR CS. I'm shocked. And I can not believe other viewers suggested these kinds of changes. Additionally, I can barely focus to see these new pages of snow-white. Please!
You have made it unclear on how we actually may vote for our shows or rate episodes. I thought it was fine before--better than fine. Now it is like a "scavenger hunt" to try to find the previous, readily available options. I'm not into scavenger hunts. FIX this! I am MOST disappointed/annoyed by these changes. BUNK!!!!

This all white page is hard on the eyes. Please bring the old website or at least give us the option to switch back to the old format. Did people really request an all white website w/ light grey text? Why do you only have the top 3 related forums threads. I'd rather see more of those and a smaller list of top contributors. Do you want people to leave your website? Did I miss out on some voting for a change in the website?

Gray text on white, thank you world for giving us browsers that can have user defined CSS, ( not that IE crap) it's the only way around this mess, and why o why would I want to see UK tv, I get enough of that on my own tv, the reason for this site is to see American tv. If I wanted to see UK stuff then why not www.tv.co.uk and similarly for other countries?
Give power back to the user. Give us back our content.

I think it's time to set up some American proxies to get back to the American site.

TV.com you've made problems for yourselves but we will get around them.

How to make your CSS better, black text that you don't have to zoom just to be able to read. Anyway nice to know that your trying, 2/10

There's two reasons why I use this site: Content and Ratings. I like to read the content and I like to rate the shows, people, etc. The content is fine, it's still relatively intact but the ratings meter has been mauled. It's been savaged, butchered, gutted, skinned and hung on some moronic developer's wall as a rather bizarre trophy!!! Anyway, I don't really care about any fancy design or layout or even this new localisation feature that seems to have upset most people, as long as I can get the information I want I'm happy. The thing is....I'm not happy! NOT HAPPY AT ALL!!! What happened to the ratings meter, I'm really annoyed with this new supposedly improved ratings meter. You used to be able to rate shows, people, etc anywhere from 0.1 - 10 which was great, but with this useless new system if I really don't like something or someone I can no longer give a 0.1. I can't give a 0.2 either, or a 0.3, not even a 0.4. The lowest I am now forced to give is a 0.5. That's ridiculous! That doesn't help me at all! On the other hand, if I really like something or someone but there's just this one tiny something that stops it being a perfect 10, I can't reflect that with this pathetic new system either. I can't give a 9.9, I am now forced to award the perfect 10 or round my score down to the next highest rating of 9.5. Unacceptable!!! Don't get me wrong, I like the addition of the little face that changes colour and expression when you rate something good or bad but as I mentioned above, I don't need or want all the fancy bells and whistles. Just solid content and a scalable ratings system. I understand the need to evolve, to keep up with the Jones' so to speak, but if I may use another old cliche - if it ain't broke....

Oh and holy carp, the forums are just hideous now. I'm using a 12.1" iBook G4 and Firefox, and whilst the old design was perfectly serviceable, the current design is cluttered and squished and just plain ugly.

Sorry, TV.com crew, but this redesign (and your localisation nonsense, especially seeing as changing your supposed location (ie, to the US, with a valid US zip code - where I used to live) doesn't do anything to change what you see, so we definitely don't get a choice) is utter, utter rubbish.

I'm disgusted that we're now being censored from seeing the original US site and forced into regional localisation. I couldn't give a flying turd about Australian TV or Australian "personalities" 99.9% of the time, and if I did want that rubbish, I could certainly get it from 1,001 publications over here. I come here for US news, for US shows, rather than the bass-ackwards "updates" we get from our media in general. At what point did we get to vote about this? Because I sure didn't get the memo, and I definitely want to opt out.

Further to my post below, I agree with the many other posts I've seen thus far regaring localised content - there are plenty of local web sites I'd rather consult if I cared to know about local TV. Ok, and I promise that this is my last comment, I just wish to add to my earlier sentiments re the Australian content. We are already forced to deal with Australia's crap television on our sets. Please don't force us to deal with our crap television here. If this stays Aus-access only I can't really see why I'd continue to come here, which would be a huge shame.

I have no problem with the new layout and design. It looks clean and neat, and is fairly easy and self explanatory to navigate (*cough*unlike new.facebook which sucks*cough*). Also, it seems to be faster to load? Thanks!

However, can we PLEASE PLEASE have options as to what country stuff we view? I like that the day's tv viewing is country-specific, but the main page stuff and news? Australia is so goddamn behind on everything that I don't care. I DO NOT watch ANYTHING on tv locally. I want to know what's happening NOW. Not in 2 years. NOW. (Unfortunately?) that means I need to know what's happening in the US. PLEASE let us choose. I don't give a crap about Aus Idol or Better Homes and Gardens. I want to know about new Gossip Girl and Bones and Grey's Anatomy. Please let us choose the universal/US news etc.

From the few comments I skimmed it seems that most Australians don't come here for local content - there are plenty of places for that. Please let us escape the cobwebs of local programming.

I can't bear to read the 9 pages of comments - I'm going to respectfully assume that there's 9 pages of fairly negative sentiment.

I'm all for evolution. Onwards and upwards stuff. It's great.

I'm not sure I'd go so far as saying this is a backwards step - but it's certainly putting too much constraint on the site users.

I've had GUI and web design myself, and in all the user testing done I've never come to select a high-contrast black on white page style. To be fair it's clear that the tv.com text is a dark grey tint rather than a black. But it's still on decidely stark white background, and what I at least perceive as smaller font size (I could be imagining that - a side effect of the colour scheme?) and frankly the amount of light coming from the screen as a result makes reading lengthy passages (such as I'm writing!) an unpleasant experience.

And the localisation... It's great that there are local portals now, but my hunch is that most Australians using tv.com are looking for updates on their favourite shows that are off-season here or to read about shows that don't even air here. I usually use Firefox as a browser, and after discovering the localisation I thought I'd launch Internet Explorer and just have the cookie set different in each browser so I could see local and international info. Lo and behold - no select locality option.

I've rambled - so bullet point now:

* I generally like the new layout and give it a + for that.

* The lack of user-locality selection is disappointing, in fact for me it makes the site essentially useless. A - on that.

* The white background with the grey might work really well on a fully colour corrected monitor attached to a colour system set design workstation - real world though the new colour scheme is hard work! Another -.

tv.com, your to-do list:

* Add site theme selection to the user profile options, and even just to the main page as a top level site setting. Stylesheets should make it a snap for you to offer us a different colour scheme with little to no effort.

* Add localisation selection, or at very least a "view US tv.com site" link.

Oak out.

I am not interested in what is on in Aus as I want to keep up with the US tv scene. You guys have just screwed the pooch! IDIOTS!!!

P.S. my 2 year old daughter could design a better website. Are you advertising to the old and blind with those huge nav buttons and menus?, and why waste space at the top of the browser just for a shadow and some lines?
