The Office: Michael and Holly's Romance is Heartwarming, but Is it Also Bittersweet?

For a show that’s all about slapstick moments and killer one-liners, The Office sure knows how to handle sentimentality. Last night’s kiss between Michael Scott (Steve Carell) and Holly Flax (Amy Ryan) ranks right up there with Jim (John Krasinski) and Pam’s (Jenna Fischer) wedding. I dare you not to tear up while you watch this.

But! (Yes, there’s a but.) I can’t help but wonder if my opinion of Michael and Holly's relationship has been compromised by last June’s news that Steve Carell is leaving The Office at the end of this season. Amy Ryan’s return to the show was announced just one month later, which led some people to assume that Michael and Holly would end up together, happily ever after, and that somehow their coupledom would provide context for Carell's exit.

I’d like to think that Michael would've eventually found his equal, his soulmate, his partner-in-improv, regardless of when or why his time on The Office came to an end. And I doubt The Office would ever have brought Holly back just to tear Michael down again—it's just not that kind of show. But if Carell hadn’t decided to leave, would Holly be back in the picture right now? Ever? Or would everything be business as usual, with Michael still bumbling along and breaking our hearts in his idealistic, slightly offensive world?

Has Carell’s departure affected your opinion Holly and Michael's relationship? Or of Season 7 overall?

I like how Erin rolls her eyes at Holly and bad mouths her. I think Erin has the right idea. Holly is pretty much Michael's consolation prize.

From a writing standpoint, Holly is back to provide Michael a proper send off. He's no spring chicken and neither is she, so for them to settle down is not unreasonable. but Michael loves Dunder Mifflin and the office, so he wouldn't leave without just cause, which leads to believe he'll get a promotion or something stupid like that// The Office shoulda ended with this season. But cash is king and media is milked until it's drier than the Sahara. Look no further than the 42 Saw movies...

The moment Holly left the show, I knew they'd end up together. It was obvious that she was his "soulmate." And whether it happened now or at the shows end didn't matter. It was always the way Michael was going to leave - by finally NOT screwing up and finding happiness. It's a perfect ending for him. Predictable, but perfect. They're the same person (mostly, with Holly not quite as stupid!) and they belong together.

However, I'm still not sure this can survive without Carell, but as a diehard Office fan, I'll still watch!

I loved when Michael told Holly he missed her and she said, "I missed you, too". And I loved how she was doing exactly what Michael was doing on his 'walk-about'. That was adorable.

Holly sucks, I hope he takes her with him.

I for one was glad they got back together before Michael leaves. Would you really rather they had done it next season when Carell's no longer there? How would that have worked? Over the phone? Through emails?
