The Playboy Club Earns This Season's First Cancellation

The Circle of Life doesn't just pertain to talking lions, it also applies to sexualized rabbits. NBC has swung the mighty Axe of Cancellation for the first time this season, and the blade has landed on—and subsequently gone straight through—the neck of The Playboy Club.

And so we officially have the first cancellation of the fall 2011 season; the heavily promoted period drama lasted just three episodes in its Monday-night time slot. Last night's episode registered 3.39 million viewers and a woeful 1.2 rating among adults. In addition to performing poorly in the ratings and receiving iffy critical reviews, The Playboy Club had been under fire from watchdog groups who wrongly claimed the show supported primetime pornography when they should have been more concerned by its ridiculous storylines, horrible dialogue, and embarrassing acting.

The Playboy Club starred Eddie Cibrian and Amber Heard and was set in 1960s Chicago at the legendary gentleman's club. It was supposed to be part network-sexy-fun-times and part mafia-murder-thriller, and was clearly an attempt to cash in on the success of AMC's Mad Men.

If you're participating in our Dead Pool and selected The Playboy Club, congratulations! You just earned yourself 10 points and a 164-way tie for first place!

They put the show on to compete with monday night football. Their target audience was distracted. Besides, all NBC was hoping for was a show that could borrow some of the viewers from Mad Men and they failed just like Pam An and all the other new "we're in the 60s too" shows.

That's what they get for ripping off MAD MEN. PAN AM should go to but, it may survive because it, at least, is on a viable network.

PLAYBOY CLUB & NBC.....Horrible, cheesy show on horrible cheesy network = GOODBYE

and the second cancelation should be.....

Charlies Angels, OMG, i couldn`t watch more than 20 minutes...

Bad everything, even the girls aren`t so hot that they can blind us from all the crap around the show...

And the tech guy?? WTF??? The only good actress they kill in the first 10 minutes and then gets replaced by the worst acting i`ve seen in years in a US tv show.

It`s too bad...Drew Barrimore should go fishing...

It's not dead yet. The show is still taping with hopes of going someplace else.

Though the show may try and kill Eddie before it dies though.

I enjoyed watching the Playboy Club I wish that they did not have to drop the show. I only hope that another network like ABC/CBS or even Lifetime pick it up.I hope that they still plain on keeping the shows" Pan Am as well as Revenge. I also think they should keep Desperate Housewives instead of giving that one the ax

Pan Am should go next. It's a boring show trying to be Mad Men. The people are beautiful, but the acting and dialogue are flat. I feel nothing for any of the characters, an important component to a television show.

I'm crushed! This is so sad! What buffoons are in charge of these things? And I agree with tryptz, they will hack PanAm next, and I love that show too. I literally never watch any tv channels lower then 23 (ie-i hate all the major networks) and this solidifies my reason for thinking all the 4 major networks suck & dont know a winner when they have one. What will replace this? Another rediculous "reality talent show" I'm sure!

I'm not surprised this happened. Although I had expected it to last a little longer than it did. This is the type of show that belongs on a cable network (USA, FX, TBS) or Showtime, HBO where it could be more edgy and truly shine. Wonder what the next casuality of the 2011-12 season will be? I'm guessing maybe How To Be A Gentleman (which truly stinks to high heaven---though I haven't seen rating for it yet after just one week), Charlie's Angles or Free Agents. My money is on Free Agents being the next to go to the big cancellation heap in TV heaven. But so far the BIG shocker so far is that Fox picked up New Girl. I like the show and I hope it does well for Fox.

Big mistake, sometimes the best shows don't hit their stride till half way through the season. I.E. Friends & Seinfeld. This had every earmark of being as good as Mad Men or Pan Am.

It's actually a very stupid decision especially for the network considering all the money they spent on advertising and marketing. Nbc is the network that usually comes about fourth in the ratings every week (CBS, ABC, and Fox are in the top three usually) , so their viewership outside of their hit shows, has been taking a dip the last couple of years. Canceling shows before they even get started (i.e. like Fox) is one reason, they will continue to struggle in the ratings especially on a Monday time slot.

After last fall's massive early cancellations and so many dissappointments I decided not to start watching any new shows untill they had aired at least a few episodes so my dvr has been running a lot the last couple of weeks. I haven't seen a single episode so I can't comment on the quality or lac of but I thought the concept of this show was really interesting and was looking forward to dipping into the first 5-6 episodes on a rainy afternoon. I have a feelign though that the name alone might have killed the future of The Playboy Club

The storyline WAS probably the main reason I really enjoyed this show. There are a few shows on the air today that really do have atrocious storylines and they stay on the air for years. Hey, look at Terra Nova. You call THAT a good storyline? Pure junk, I say, and not all entertaining. This show had a GOOD storyline, GOOD dialogue, pretty hot looking women, wonderful musical numbers...and looked wonderful in HD. Too bad that more people didn't watch (but maybe they did because relying on the ridiculous Nielson ratings is never accurate), but hey, I loved the show, and so did a lot of people judging by the comments on the show's facebook page. Oh well, less network tv to watch and more pretty good cable shows.

This show was just a bad idea. I remember reading about it before they'd even released a promo and shaking my head. Some of these shows are obviously bad ideas, but I guess studio execs have to gamble each season. Sometimes a show that might seem like crap actually gets a good reaction from people.

This was on my Dead Pool list, so hooray for me. A show about Playboy bunnies without any nudity wasn't going to work. It needed nudity, which means it needed to be on cable. But it didn't help that the writing was crap, too.

NBC must be one of the most stupid networks in history. Why promote a show for so long and cancel it after only 3 episodes. NBC It is like a mother waiting 9 months for a baby and after the baby is born, only after three weeks they decide the baby is ugly to live and prematurely kill it. I'm not saying the show was the good, it was so so at best, but the premiss was good and had potential to be better. That is why they say NBC stands for Nothing But Cockshit.

How bout knowing just a little bit about what ur talking about before stating ur opinion, eh? Say whatever u want about the early cancellation of new network shows (which has its good and bad sides in my opinion.), but don't just blame nbc, if u knew anything whatsoever u would know that this is the commonly accepted practice among the big 4 networks.

I couldn't care less "about the commonly accepted practice", it just shows to the 3.39 million viewers how little NBC cares about them.

Hey, remember back in the 80's, Cheers (on NBC) was near the bottom of the ratings ALL SEASON, any yet, it not only stayed on the air for the full season, it was renewed and then soared to the top of the charts. Who knows...maybe today it's tougher to sell advertising spots to low rated shows whereas it wasn't a difficult sell way back then?

That might as well be the case my friend. I have barely watched any of the new shows so far. Specially the serialized ones like unforgettable, the ringer and etc. I just got fed up about investing my time on stories that could get canceled right out of the gate. So now I just wait for a few weeks or more and watch them online later, wait for reruns or buy the dvds later.

What the...? How do you prematurely kill a baby after it's born? When is the correct time to kill a baby after it's born? And what exactly is "cockshit"?

Glad the show was canned. Now axe Pan Am.

You make a good point, promoting this show for so long also backfired big time. The hype about the playboy's name has fooled the audience into expecting something else from it. Perhaps if the show had some nudity and was on HBO or Showtime it would have a better chance to go on.

Didn't watch it, and don't really care about that show, but NBC pulls the plug so fast on any new show. They don't give the chance to a show to get on track. They did the same with Outlaw last year.

NBC sucks.
