FX has been one of the leading providers of quality original programming over the last few years, thanks to shows such as Rescue Me, It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, The Shield, and more. It's been pretty spot-on in recent years as well, with critics' faves Damages and the brand-new Sons of Anarchy (which just got whiff of a second season yesterday).
But it ain't always peaches and gravy, as they say...
With fresh new blood coming in, FX has decided to send one of its middling shows out to pasture. The network has officially canceled The Riches, according to EW.com. The Riches lasted two seasons on FX and garnered some fairly good reviews, but apparently the drama couldn't draw an audience.
The Riches was stacked on the acting front, with part-time cross-dressing comedian Eddie Izzard and Oscar nominee Minnie Driver headlining. The pair played a grifter couple that weasels its way into high society with their family by assuming the identity of a wealthy couple.
Word of the show's cancellation actually popped up on MySpace, of all places, when The Riches actor Todd Stashwick posted the news in late September. It was officially confirmed by FX reps today.
The Riches is the second FX original program to be whacked in the past four months. In early June, Courtney Cox's Dirt was kicked out the back door.
If you ask us, The Riches may have deserved another shot--we'll miss Eddie Izzard! What are your thoughts?

How disappointing to hear the "the Riches" had been cancelled, it was one of the few shows on TV worth watching. Eddie Izzard & Minnie Driver were wonderful as the leading characters and the supporting cast unmatched.
I really like this show, they should have tried moving it around a little in nthe line up before cutting it. It was funny and dramatic and full of moral values. Besides I always think it's total bullsh*t to leave it as a cliffhanger!
Im sooooooo angry! how could they end the season like that! I've loved this serie and hoped for a third season, but NO now is that not possible anymore. I HATE FX
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This was a phenomenal show with a powerhouse cast and it REALLY deserved a 3rd season to recover from the Writer's Strike and Minnie Driver's pregnancy.....
Cancelling the show and leaving it hanging where they did was a terrible mistake! If they could go back and re-create the magic of season 1 this show could be EMMY fodder! What a waste. :(
I'm devastated. I loved the show and will miss it very much. I hate FX for that! Finishing the show in such a moment. It did have some great reviews, so I hoped they wouldn't cancel it. Apparantly money is everything that counts for those TV bosses.
I'll really miss this program, especially the wonderful Minnie Driver. I loved "Dirt" as well and am really upset with F/X.
Both Minnie Driver and Courtney Cox demonstrated that they can act--their roles were complex and edgy--something special that you don't come across every day.
I loved The Riches and while it is true the second season wasn't as good as the first it still was a great show, fresh and original. And like the others, I hope it gets picked up by another network. Probably not, but one can always dream. I never saw Dirt but still enjoy Rescue Me and The Shield. As for Sons Of Anarchy? Perlman, Callie, and Karnes are awesome but the rest of the show isn't very good in my opinion. I'm surprised it got picked up... especially with Hunnam needing more acting lessons.
Now this one I really will miss. I tolerated Dirt, but The Riches, what a great show. I'll surely miss Eddie & Minnie.
Love the show, hope it wasn't cancelled to free up the slot for more "reality" crap. Nothing at all "real" about scripted shows like survivor, big brother, and all that garbage. Hope someday that we get network executives with imagination and guts enough to put good dramas and comedies on instead of the drival they produce with there cookie cutter mentalities.
damn this show was pretty good.....wtf why is it all the great shows that get canceled???
I enjoyed the first season of the Riches alot but I really did not watch it at all during it's second season. I really do love Eddie Izzard - he is such a great dark comedy actor
This is so sad. The Riches was such a great series. I'm hoping it will get picked up by another network (any network except FOX).
Too bad for Minnie Driver, she's really good in this.
I loved this show! Sure it went through a sophomore slump, but so do a lot of other shows. However, as sad as this news is, it really doesn't come as a surprise. It wasn't going to appeal to mainstream audiences.
Kat
Boo. :(
It's a shame this show is being cancelled as I'm quite enjoying the second season currently airing in the UK. Personally, I don't think it was ever going to be an easy sell to mainstream audiences with its Irish travelling conmen stealing the American dream premise and was clearly a risk so I'm not that surprised. While it lasted it was enjoyable non the less and quality wise it has only been a small drop unlike other shows like Heroes in Season 2.
i saw the show the show a couple times it's nothing special
While the first season was good, the second one was lacking what the first one had. I remember watching every episode of the first season and then after a while not caring enough to watch every episode of season two. While not all that bad of a show, like others canceled, I can agree with the execs decision to cancel this show; with a high quality of their station they didn't need a show dragging them down. Although, I wouldn't mind if another station picked it up or something, to show it on a random day like Saturday. There's nothing to watch on Saturday. D:
Too many shows now get off to a good start and then go down in quality so quickly. This is one of them.
Rage tbh. Doesn't bother me.
The second season was disappointing, but I wanted to see what happened with the election. They didn't do themselves any favors with spilling the family up. The main thing that worked was that they always had each other's back, and there was just too much trust to rebuild as the door slammed shut. Too bad, too. I enjoyed watching how they got out of their various scrapes.
I felt second season was no where near as good as first season. just didnt seem to have the same level of cleverness. "doug" was all over the place, there was no planning... i know it was trying to develop characters, but throw in dale, and every child being super troubled, and it was too much.
I realy liked this show, Someone finaly had an original thought but wasn't alowed to finish it, Sad.
Sad, it was a great show. Maybe too dark for the execs taste.
I feel very sad =(
R.I.P The Riches
I'm sorry the show got canceled before there was a resolution to the storyline. Now we'll never know what happened to the Malloys and their extended family.
I'm pretty happy it's gone to be honest. This allows FX to work on something else, something better. This show just wasn't up to FX's high standards: The Shield, Rescue Me, Nip Tuck, Damages, Sons of Anarchy. All MUCH, MUCH better than The Riches. Good Riddance I say.
This show was too good to deserve this fate. Maybe their second season wouldn't have paled so much if they didn't have to deal with that pointless writers strike. At least Dirt deserved to get cancelled. This is just blasphemy.
loved season 1 but season two dragged
I really really loved both Dirt and The Riches. They were very interesting, provocative and very well filmed. Stupid FX canceling its really good shows.
I actually liked the show, but not actually shocked it got canned. I didn't get into it until FX showed repeats of Season 1, but Season 2 ended up being a little flat. Izzard was the best part, but I loved Minnie Driver as well.
thats too bad..it was a decent show
awww, too bad! I really liked this show!!!
awww, too bad! I really liked this show!!!
what show is this?
I liked the first season, wasn't impressed with season 2.
that really sucks it was an all right show. i liked the first season.
Disappointed in the news, but not surprised. I'm particularly unhappy because it didn't reach a conclusion. As usual, the viewer is left hanging.
Never saw a single episode, and I never knew anybody that watched the show.
That is too bad, Was not my favorite show, But I did TIVO it and enjoyed it, Good acting, and decent drama, will be missed.
Yep, I will miss this show, and the few others that are being cancelled.
