The Sons of Anarchy Spin-Off Is One Step Closer to Reality at FX

The Sons of Anarchy spin-off centered around the Mayans is one step closer to becoming a reality at FX. According to Variety, the long-rumored spin-off of the network's highest-rated drama not only has a name—Mayans MC—but is also in script development. The potential series was co-created by Sons of Anarchy creator Kurt Sutter and Elgin James (Little Birds).

The Mayans were a Mexican-American motorcycle club that played an integral role in the California-set biker drama over the course of its seven seasons. The club's Oakland charter, which was involved in heroin distribution and led by Emilio Rivera's Marcus Alvarez, was originally an adversary of SAMCRO. Introduced at the beginning of Season 1, the Mayans engaged SAMCRO in a turf war, but eventually the two clubs forged a delicate working relationship.

James is attached to write the pilot script, which is said to be a "dark, visceral family drama" told through the lens of Latino outlaws, which makes sense based on the style and grit of the series from which it was born. But is simply focusing the story on the Mayans enough to separate the drama from its parent series, which was Hamlet on wheels? And will Mayans MC be able to erase all memories of Sutter's last, dreadful FX series, The Bastard Executioner? I'm not so sure.

So if people don't watch this show - will Sutter cancel another one of his shows?

I ain't watching this - SoA was my favourite show on TV during season 4 & 5 but then it got ridiculous with it's extended running time, ridiculous plots and musical montages - and let's be honest, the Mayans weren't that interesting to begin with so a whole series based on that Charter - who's gonna watch that?

Sorry Kurt - you're a one hit wonder

I liked SOA warts & all, but like Breaking Bad, when it ended, that was the end for me. Period.

I'm not nostalgic for the Sutterverse & I'm not even the least bit curious to watch a second of it

So much enthusiasm here for Mayans. I think it has a chance of being really good. Intense. Go for it.

No thanks, after how badly Sons ended and how terrible Bastard was, I think Sutter needs an extended break.

Sounds like it will just be SoA but with different actors, not interested.

Hopefully Bastard Executioner isn't taking up all the room in Sutter's waste bin.

While watching SoA, I always thought "How cool would it be to see more of the Mayans MC" - NOT!!!

Seriously, if you want to spin-off SoA, fine! Do a Original 9 series! But the Mayans... does anyone even care?!?

"But is simply focusing the story on the Mayans enough to separate the drama from its parent series,"

HAHA no. Not even close, even SOA wasn't SOA in the later seasons. It was just Sutter trying to out-Sutter himself constantly and attempting to, poorly, rectify his mistake in not killing Clay when it was the most logical. So he tried to make it more brutal and he tried to make it more shocking and both succeeded in doing so and failed what he created initially.

This, like the Bastard Executioner will not make it past season 1. Why? Because this story isn't different enough from SOA to separate it out, so from the jump he is going to attempt to make it so. And with Sutter, all he knows is upping the violence and upping the gore, that is it.

Also he is going to have a problem with language and feeling authentic. There will be no reason for the majority of this series to not be in Spanish. But it won't because American's don't speak the language. So it will feel off from the get go.

This is a bad idea built off of the last three bad idea seasons of SOA. FX should part ways with Sutter and find something new. Anything new, they haven't taken steps to introduce the quality of programming that we have come to expect from this channel. The Americans is arguably one of the best shows on TV presently and it is on the back end of its run. You have maybe American Crime, because horror story was never good and that is it. (And no, before you mention it I am not including the comedies on FXX, FXY, FXABC, FXunivision or whatever else you want to attempt to include)

With Peak tv being at it's peak! I just don't know if I have room in my schedule for another show..Another spinoff I might add! Here's looking @U BCS/FTWD!
But I did like the characters/club so I'll give it the 4 episode test:/

"But is simply focusing the story on the Mayans enough to separate the drama from its parent series?"

Umm...no, it's not. Sorry, but this is not the SOA based story I'm interested in. I said it at the time and I'll say it again now, if you want to spin off Sons of Anarchy, flash back to The Original 9 and the origins of the club or flash forward to Thomas and Able at odds about joining the MC and in what direction to take it.

But a story about the Mayans sounds a lot like Legends of Tomorrow. A series made up of purely complementary characters which, while solid enough in the context of the larger show, on their own aren't nearly enough to carry the burden.

Spin offs are networks just saying we can't come up with something original so let's recycle old stuff

The Mayans storylines were the worst on SOA.
This is a hard pass.

I'm intrigued, actually. Usually I dread the spinoffs, but while watching SoA I always wondered about the other MCs. It seemed like Sutter had these stories for them, like they were really existing concurrently with SAMCRO in the same timeline. Might be interesting, especially if any Sons (or other SoA characters) make an appearance.
