The Top Ten Shows of 2009 (According to "You")

It goes without saying that American Idol took the top spot (say it with me) AGAIN in Nielsen's list of highest-rated programs this year, according to the broke-ass system that we continue to use even though it's merely partially accurate. The media research company released its year-end data late last week, showing once again that when Americans want to sit down and watch TV, they head straight for the fluff.

Idol grabbed the top two slots (Wednesday's results show topped Tuesday's performance show in a switcheroo this year, but a few Obama speech bumps may have helped that) and Dancing With the Stars took third and fifth (performances beating results). Brett Favre Smorgasbord NBC's Sunday Night Football snuck into fourth place.

Though reality still dominated the top five, the news here is that ratings were down for both Idol and DWTS, retaining that slight glimmer of hope I have for the future. Slight.

The top scripted program of the year once again was a CBS newbie: NCIS: Los Angeles beat its big brother NCIS, and the shows took sixth and seventh, respectively (last year's top scripted show was The Mentalist). Ratings were up by nearly a point and a half for NCIS (the show placed eighth last year), which still confuses me. CBS continued its hot scripted streak with the surprise tenth entry, The Good Wife. I know people were watching this show, but tenth? Even after I did a triple take, it was still sitting there in tenth place.

Oh heck, why don't I just show you the list.

4. Dancing With the Stars Results ABC 11.4

NCIS is totally better!!! i can not believe anyone would think that NCIS LA could be better than the original. NCIS LA is just a cheap copy of Ncis. NCIS IS THE BEST SHOW ON EARTH!!! :D

I watch:
Dancing with the Stars, but not the results show.
Sunday Night and Monday Night Football and sometimes the pre-kick show
NCIS and NCIS Los Angeles.
Add Criminal Minds to that list, and those are most of my very favorite shows

Okay, so football, three scripted shows out of which two are cop shows which people just can't seem to get enough of no matter how many fo them there are, and reality competition shows in which stars do the thing that they aren't stars for and normal people do the thing most of them really shouldn't be doing at all. This really makes me wonder who they give those Nielsen boxes too. Do they have them take a test in which they see a random youtube video and an episode of Lost, Dexter, Pushing Daisies, Supernatural or any other show that is just the tiniest bit good, and then let them say which they liked more and if they say the youtube video they get the box?

It does seem so.

Now with Internet Nielsen should be dead. With Nielsen they can't really see if people are watching, the only thing they see is which channel they are tuned to. I have my tv on 24/7 but it is rarely that I watch it. My tv is on even when I am not home, it's a cheap way to scare burglars, it uses less energy then a 100 WAT lamp since it's LED. Watching a whole episode of IDOL or Dancing With the Stars is torture, it's a destiny worst then death.

There most be something more to it then that the people actually are watching. People must be tired after a days work and fall asleep infront of the tv or something. They need a new system so they know that people really are awake or even alive. Many elderly watch those channels so they could be dead for a week or two before the neighbours notice the smell. They should use a system where the viewers can rate the shows, The Nielsen system is only one way and it is outdated, and it is why we are suprised when good shows are cancelled and garbage gets good ratings. They should also look at it globaly since a show with bad ratings in the US could be number one in the rest of the world.

I hate most of the shows on this list with the exception of maybe NCIS... maybe. My top 10 goes more like this. ( My opinion people, thats it so no yelling)
10.) Grey's Anatomy, not it's best season but not bad either... although i do hate the Chief right now 9.) Accidentally on Purpose, Davis is AWESOME 8.) House, it's different this season, but in a really good way 7.) Glee, dude come on... it's a different musical EVERY WEEK how much more fantastic can you get 6.) Bones, this show had lost some of it's awesome but brought it all back this season 5.) Psych, every single episode is just as good as the last... in my opinion 4.) Dexter, it's creepy but in a very very good way 3.) Mad Men, need i give a reason? 2.) True Blood, i didn't really find this seasons storyline that good but everything else about it was great. 1.) Supernatural, while i do miss the brotherly love of the first 2 seasons the 3rd and 4th seasons where so angsty that any amount of happy made me happy... I adore the whole heaven and hell thing they have going and the angst has died down quite a bit for the 5th season and Castiel is still adorable... plus. their version of Lucifer and the apocalypse is kind of awesome. Some of my honorable mentions of 09 are How i Met your Mother, Cougartown, Monk, Leverage, The Middle, and Lost.

Terrible lists. Where are the actual shows? All I see is reality crap and football.CSI, NCIS, and The Mentalist are pretty boring.

You've got to be kidding - I don't watch anything on either list, except for Mentalist. I hate "reality" shows and all that singing and dancing crap. Just give me some good actors and a good, interesting story line.

I watch nothing on the top 10 and have disdain for most of the people who like such things. They are the people who walk in front of your car without looking and then cop an attitude. They are the people who stand in line for 20 minutes only to make a cell phone call when they reach the counter to call people and ask what they want then they pay with a check that bounces and try 10 bouncing credit cards before pulling out cash in the form of a bag of pennies.

It's funny and actually gives a lot of credit to TV.com crowd when most wouldn't touch most of these shows with a ten foot pole. It is, however, always interesting to ask: where in the world are all these people getting Nielsen's boxes - why aren't they here on TV-com? Are most of "average" Americans simply not online but regular couch potatoes? And can you imagine the quality of programming if we, the TV.com crowd got the boxes? Come on, dare to dream!

Here in Chicago the best TV shpow for the past 2 seasons is "SONS OF ANARCHY" It's a shame that the award shows are afraid to honor the show because of the theme. Ron Perlman, Katey Sagel and Charlie Hunnam are GREAT.
