The Vampire Diaries "American Gothic" Review: Pennsylvania Double-Dutch

The Vampire Diaries S04E18: "American Gothic"

The hunt for the cure has spanned the northeastern Atlantic corridor this season, traipsing from the magical forests of Canada to the urban jungle of New York City to, this week, the Creamed Corn Capital of the Keystone State. Willoughby, Pennsylvania is Katherine’s bucolic base of operations these days, and the site of one of my favorite narrative devices The Vampire Diaries has employed to date. Far from stalking the town in terror or hiding out in a crypt on the outskirts, Katherine has established an elaborate compulsion network in which everybody merrily supplies her with acquaintanceship and blood, but forgets she exists the second any third party brings her up. It’s a cool concept, and I half wish it had gotten a little more room to breathe.

When Elena and Rebekah stumbled onto Katherine and her ingenious in-plain-sight hideout, the ladies couldn’t resist grabbing brunch at the local diner to chat about their lives, the location of the cure, and how viciously they all despise one another. For as much venom as these three have spat at one another over the life of the series, the new dynamics this time kept the scene fresh and funny. Katherine was put on her heels by Evil Elena, a position we’ve not often seen her in. (Rebekah, true to form, fell back on her tendency to side with the person she hates the least in any given situation.)

The timing of their arrival was impeccable, what with Katherine preparing to meet an old friend and current accomplice at the town gazebo; it was none other than the dapper Elijah, a man custom-built for sun-splashed meetings at quaint wooden structures. Elena took her doppelganger's place in order to learn what part the eldest living Mikaelsen was playing. That left Katherine and Rebekah chilling at the diner to great the Salvatores, who had followed in hot pursuit.

Both meetings set into motion a vintage Vampire Diaries cavalcade of scheming and re-scheming. But like the best TVD episodes, all the evasions, elisions, and double-crosses swirled around a nugget of deeply felt sincerity.

Two nuggets, actually. The first was the startling realization that Katherine, maybe, possibly, does want to give up a life of villainous capers for something simpler. Surrendering her ace in the hole to Elijah was a leap of faith, and if it was a genuine one, it speaks to both her desperation and to the unflappable dignity Elijah commands in order to earn her trust. Like Stefan and Damon, he’s convinced that some part of his one-time paramour is worth believing in.

But unlike them, it’s more than love that motivates Elijah in this way. It’s also a kind of nobility, and a true reckoning with the tragic isolation that eternity as a monster carries. The gravity that Daniel Gillies has always brought to the character is an effective counterpoint to the unabashed supernatural craziness that drives TVD’s primary impulses. The empathy with which Elijah treated Katherine, and later Rebekah, also extended to Elena once he appraised her current status. Their rueful conversation evoked the true tragedy of her transformation more powerfully than any other single moment since her switch-flip.

Hence the episode’s other cards-on-the-table moment, which represented an equally dramatic character shift, but in the opposite direction. Elena was good and fed up with the brothers’ incessant efforts to re-flip her humanity switch, and laid a violent ultimatum on them: If they don’t give it a rest, she's going to start dropping bodies every which way—starting with an amiable night shift waitress in the wrong place at the wrong time. Even Damon wouldn’t want that, if only to avoid Stefan’s subsequent hectoring. They’re going to need a new plan if they want to restore Elena’s humanity without resorting to slipping the cure into her beer at the next big bash at Salvatore Central.

That’s assuming they can get their hands on the cure in the first place, seeing as it’s now in the possession of the about-to-be-reunited Mikaelsen clan. Elijah and Rebekah are en route to Mystic Falls, where Klaus has a new reason for needing the magical vial. Thanks to Silas, he spent an entire B-story in agony caused not by the white oak shards left in his torso but by the psychological shrapnel left in his brain.

Ostensibly this was meant to reinforce how creepy and powerful Silas is (though, again, he’s not powerful enough to carve out a chunk of the show’s budget to hire his own actor). It also provided a convenient excuse for Joseph Morgan to writhe around shirtless for an episode, which, hey, no complaints. But primarily it facilitated a shouty, funny burst of catharsis with Caroline. On most shows, it might be odd for a character to proffer friendship in the same breath as the reminder, “We’ve all tried to kill you. And you’ve tried to kill most of us.” On this show, with this social circle, those are practically prerequisites.

NOTES & QUOTES

– Meanwhile in Mystic Falls, Part I: Let’s assume amnesiac Bonnie was scouring the internet to catch up on all the gruesome events that last week’s near-death experience wiped from her brain. Let’s also assume she got as far as the weirdly accented dude on the island before getting distracted by that Game of Thrones House generator game.

– Meanwhile in Mystic Falls, Part II: And what do we think Matt was up to this week? I’ll say he’s found most of the cool rooms in Lockwood Manor, but he’s still searching for the secret passageway from the lounge to the conservatory.

– Will Silas be sticking with the Caroline guise now? While I appreciate that it would give Candice Accola a welcome chance to stretch, it still feels like a cheat. After Klaus-as-Alaric, Klaus-as-Tyler, and Deranged Alaric, the returns of stuffing our heroes into villain suits are seriously diminishing.

– Katherine’s trained an entire bedroom community to do her bidding and preserve her secrets. She’s the Ben Linus of Pennsylvania.

– Wonderful visual rhyme when Katherine snapped Elena’s neck and directly took her place in the frame. It befit how well Nina Dobrev plays the two as separate characters even now that they’re more alike than ever.

– Weird association of the week: Encyclopedia Damon deducing the location of the cure reminded me, of all things, of Kramer puzzling out George’s ATM code on Seinfeld

– It’s always a treat to see the Salvatores do some old-fashioned brotherly bonding, but doubly so when they’re bonding over the fact that they’re consistently pretty lousy at bringing a plan together.

– “Remind me to send her some mini-muffins.”

– “I don’t know if this is some new way of flirting, but it sucks.”

– “That guy got his neck snapped in New York, and this guy is royally pissed off.”

– Rebekah’s oh-so-helpful Katherine impersonation tips: “Not quite slutty enough. I think you need more eyeliner” and “Throatier. More mannish.”

– Thumbs up to everyone’s skeeved-out groans when Katherine referred to Elijah as her friend in full-on italics.

– “No sudden moves. No tricks, either. No Katherine-ing.”

– “DId it ever occur to you that you’re not that deep?”

– “Sorry, it’s Rebekah—I didn’t have a pony to distract her, Stefan.”

– “You don’t have a smart brother. Turns out I’m just as stupid as the rest of you.”

– “I had a moment of weakness, Stefan. It’s my thing.”

One of the best episode of TVD so far, Elijah's return really helped in moving the story forward as he brings in the sort of compassion despite being an original and his naive attempt to forgive Katherine for all her since is charming, Nina Dobrev is simply amazing for her ability to portray 3 characters at a go ans shows her maturity. It was cute to see Klaus and Caroline bonding & their still hope for the Klaroline shippers out their.

You had to bring up Ben Linus and subsequently "lost" didnt you? For shame! I'm still getting over that show. Moving on:
Katherine is the world’s best villain. I don’t for a second believe that her giving Elijah the cure has anything to do with her changing. She did it so that Elijah would trust her and believe she was willing to change, therefore making it so that he would talk to Klaus on her behalf and get her off the hook. She knew that she couldn’t have done it on her own, and Elijah wasn’t going to help her out after he realized she was still a horrible person and was just using him.
And that whole decoy cure thing? Genius. Yep, team Katherine all the way. If there was some way Katherine could get her way and Rebbeka could still get the cure, I’d be satisfied with whatever happens.

Also, the scene design and direction gave away the location of the cure as soon as we entered Katharine's house--the fish tank is front and center, and too strange of a design choice without it being meaningful. I didn't notice there was no fish, though, until Damon mentioned it. This show is so smart.

Is it possible Katherine had yet another fake cure, and that's what she gave to Elijah? The expression on her face as she walked away from him was very ambiguous (yay Nina!).

Either way, Katherine's seemingly heartfelt final speech to Elijah and Elena's sudden burst of "pointless" violence at the end leaves the two characters transposed in terms of basic emotional morality. It was just a teensy bit forced that it happened all at once, but the show really pulled it off, esp. as these two characters have kept their basic qualities throughout 3.5 seasons. Making the tired trope of "twins switching personalities" totally unexpected, believable, and unsettling is a real coup. It's much more disturbing coming this late in the game than it would have been in an earlier season. Why isn't this show celebrated by critics et al. for its innovative and skilled narrative and characterological sleights of hand?!?

And I agree--any doubts about Nina Dobrev's acting abilities are put to rest as she pulls off this double character transformation without our losing track of who is whom. She's essentially played 3 different roles over the course of the series--all 3 in this season (maybe 4 if you consider that Katerina in the flashbacks is so different from Katherine in the present). By the end of the episode, though, the way the two characters crossed so far into each other's usual emotional and moral territory is going to provide an even greater challenge for Dobrev as the season goes into its final phase.

I am going to get a whole lot of crap for this, but even though Elijah is back, TVD is losing its charm for me.

I feel you this season has been a little bit of a let down. Fingers crossed the last few episodes will pick up momentum and we can end on a high note. I'm wondering if this is sorta gonna be like season one a little (which I think sucked even more than this season) and it is more about setting things up, we are setting up the Originals spinoff obviously but maybe next season will be really intense as they have to deal with Silas. Sorta like how season 2 exploded into awesomeness when they kept bringing in great villains, first Katherine than Klaus. So I'm holding on until this season is over, than I might switch to watching the Originals.

Their rueful conversation evoked the true tragedy of her transformation more powerfully than any other single moment since her switch-flip."
LOVED that paragraph especially. You summed up why Daniel Gillies and his portrayal of Elijah on this show is nothing short of magical.

-To me, any episode in with Elijah appears makes it instantly good. And there he was, standing there, as though he walked fresh off the page of Vampire GQ and, by golly I could practically hear the collective sound of undies across the globe hitting the floor. Indecent of me to say, I know, but Elijah does elicit that sort of reaction from most of his fangirls and some of the guys too. He's just amazing. He's easily, unquestionably, incontestably, without a single ounce of a doubt my favorite vampire on TVD. To me, he's the one who knows who and what he is and still manages to balance that fine line of embracing his vampirism while still being humanly. To me, he shows the others that it's possible to still have morals and be a beast. Always keeping it classy. Yes, I will always be an Elijah fangirl. At first, I was a bit taken aback by his rendezvous with Katherine, but than it completely made sense. He does have a knack for truly seeing the good in people. Katerina (and the way in which he makes the distinction between Katerina, his Katerina, and Katherine, is brilliant, brilliant writing) was the love of his life. He tends to get sidetracked with family, and honor, and being noble and cleaning up messes and fixing things that it's easy to forget that he too was a man in love. I know some people seen his allegiance , or whatever you'd like to refer to it as, to Katherine as out of character, but it wasn't. He truly believed she was doing some good, and the moment he seen that her actions were dishonorable he cut her off. It wasn't until the very end, however, where I truly believed that Kat truly and genuinely cares for him. I was more than willing to say he was just another lovestruck fool for her to toy with, but I think she does love him.
-That brings me to Kat. Last week they screwed up royally and ruined Lexie as a character because she suddenly went against everything we've come to see her and know her as. This week, they added more layers and depth to Kat, to the point where when she claimed that none of them really know her, I kind of believed her. That is how you give growth and development to a character without screwing them up and revamping them completely. You can't start from scratch. She's clung to her self-preservation and any and every cost for so long that in this episode especially you could almost sense that she misses who she used to be. Nina D did fantastic with that, and distinguishing Kat from Evilena on top of it. Plus the connetion that Kat and Bex may have more in common than even they realize.
-Bex and Evilena working togther continues to be all sorts of awesome. Those two and Kat in the same scenes together....awesome squared.
-I for one love it with my Salvatore bros work together. It's one of my fave things about the show. IT's always full of great lines and snarkies.
-Contrived as some of their stuff may be,I can't get enough of the chemistry between Caroline and Klaus. I mean at this point, sure, they should be friends, and Like Klaus said, he hasn't exactly been scouring the Earth looking for Tyler in order to kill him. Because he knows that he'll completely lose Caroline that way and for reasons he clearly doesn't even understand himself, he just doesn't want to do that. So I enjoyed watching a shirtless Klaus be all bitchy because he's in agony. And I love that Caroline was kind of Caroline again, sweet and snarky but always willing to give a hand. And for a change this season she didn't irritate me to pieces. It's sad this season Caroline is only fun to watch when she's with him.
- Elena kissing Elijah while pretending to be Kat? Why was that full of so much win? It was though. I've always loved the relationship that Elena and Elijah have had. They seemed to always have a mutual understanding and respect for one another that they rarely seem to truly have for anyone else. I always dug that. They both have a moral code. A code of Ethics, and while they followed it to a tee, family regardless of how screwed up their family is/was, Family always came first. And Loyalty, Honor. Word. It always meant something to both of them. So in a way they were always tied together in this deep way that I personally just loved. And understood. When they actually talk it's always so meaningful. There conversation in this episode was no exception. The way he deduced that she had shut her feelings off, and the genuine concern and care he had when she said that Kat killed her brother...God, I love Elijah. It was easily one of my favorite scenes of the night. As was his conversation with his brother over the phone, and the one one one convo with his little sister. Ugh. I get Elijah so much.
-I agree with the whole Silas thing. Get a body already and lets be done with it. I'm sick of him taking the form of other people. At least Caroline came across as a bit more badass, because Silas as Shane was just hard to take seriously. I can't lie. It's been done on this show a few times before, and much better at that, and we all know that nothing is better than the person in their right form. As much as I loved Klaus as Alaric, Klaus as Klaus is infinitely more awesome. Klaus as Tyler? I like to pretend like that ridiculousness never even happened.
-Bonnie, I know she had no real plae in this episode, and she shouldn't have been in it. But because they use her so much to move plots forward and what not, it would be inie if we had more substance to go on as far as what she's doing instead ofbeing told about it. Plus, she's finally back to reality, and we haven't actually been able to see her back to reality, having to grieve Jer's death all over again, and the death of her mom's friends etc.
-As much as it sucked that Evilena necksnapped the waitress (There were SO many necksnaps...my goodness!) I understood why she needed to make her point. I think maybe the boys need to back off for now. Or change their tactics, because what they are doing now is not going to work. Personally Elena is more awesome as a vampire, so I don't want her to go back. But if she's too ruthless than I can see the concern for the well being of others.

Between Elijah back on screen and shirtless Klaus, I think I had to change my undies at least three times during this episode. No joke.

Positively one of the best TVD episodes. so much character development for Kat, Elijah,Klaus and Rebecca. Nina dobrev was AMAZING, she played 3 characters here, "Kat, dark Elena, and Elena trying to be kat. people complain about action , hello ?TVD neva has any physical action. its all about the intense moments and dialogue, and this episode amazed. hope this isn't the last we see of KAT and Dark Elena. however NO BONNIE again WTF??, why do they not care about this Character, its messed up!

Isn't it about time Elena got the dungeon treatment? It worked for the bro's enough times.
It's getting a bit maddening how selectively the vamp's are using their speed, or lack of, to stop stuff. One minute it's uber rushy and things are interrupted or it's, no that happened and/or they're well gone after mere seconds.
Why the Hell didn't (Santa) Klaus think to just compel some schlub, any schlub, to pull out his mirage of a stake? Or even Miss Congeniality when she turned up? Being of the first vamp's seems to get more limitations than an unlimited mobile contract when tested.

It took me exactly 26 hours to download this episode now that the government has attacked the vpn servers ,… I think CW should pay me for being a fan and going through this torture,…
_What's up with these '' previously on TVD '' ? hate it ,… to top it all we have to see JerHulk die over and over again,…
_Katherine compelling the whole town ? brilliant,… and forgetting her when a third party is involved? Even more brilliant,…
_ TVD logic ,… sheriff Forbes suddenly becoming competent and tracking vehicles ? really TVD ?
_no matter what is going on between these brothers ,… They have great chemistry,… love watching these two bond or torment each other,… either way it is fun,… Damon saying '' Look at that '' LOL
_ I LOVE Klaus but watching him in pain was very satisfying,… so that solves this whole debate that me and all my friends were having for a while now,… if and when I would be involved with Klaus in a BDSM relationship ,… I'll be the Dom,… I just love my friends and our debates,…
_I actually enjoyed Silas being faceless this episode,… I think it is because Caroline can pull it off better than Shane,… It reminds me of Agatha Christie and the Burgh Island book,…the murderer is one of us,… when trust is gone everyone is on their own,… and needless to say that when one is alone every shadow transforms to a monster,… But I am not sure that TVD has the framework for this kind of villain to work,… Buffy did,…the gang did not see eye to eye very much even before,… so this change does not seem to matter as much,…
_ when SiloCaroline caressed Klaus,… the look of pure need and wonder in his eyes,… I had an angina,…
_'' I forgot how charming you ever '' when did Rebekah became so awesome,… I get why February wanted to be besties with her ( or was it another month ? who cares ,… ) I want Rebekah to be my BFF,… I would even go on a freaking TV reality show,… probably not but still,… love this chick,…
_ sniffing distance from Klaus ? oh my,…
_Rebekah's fascination with evil Elena is hilarious,…
_Klaus's tattoo is a feather transforming to birds ,… Madonna's clip anyone ? though it was a dog,…
_please ? Klaus said '' please '' and later on '' thank you '',… WTF ? what is happening ? this is so great though ,… the writers are trying to bring Klaus a bit up in the moral ladder and Caroline down,… I approve ,… ;))
_her shoes ? that is low even for evil Elena,… nobody messes with a woman's shoes,… the only way someone is gonna end up with my shoes is to pry it off of my cold dead hands,…
_Elena had still that God awful pantyhose when she came of the bathroom and then the next second she did not,…
_the kiss lacked chemistry ,… But I am quiet fascinated with this Kalijah shipping ,… I always wanted Stefan to end up with my favorite doppelganger because I think she is the only one who can cure him of his self-hatred and bring much needed fun into his life without being the ripper,… But now I am pro Stebekah,… I changed ships ,…
_Eww ,… save it for when you are gonna find out about Klaus and that little nobody insignificant warewolf,…
_so I think Caroline is a student here in Iran,… Everyone knows that they put some kind of shit in the cafeteria's food that suppresses the sexual needs ,… Shirtless Klaus ,… impossible with normal hormones,…
_ Elijah ,… and his disease,… love you to pieces,…
_ my favorite quote '' you brought me back Caroline '' my heart can not handle this much joy ,…
_ I think Katherine feels something for Elijah as she did for Stefan,… But Love it is not,…
_Klaroline ,… that smile ,… wow ,… they are friends,… we all know what that means to Caroline ,…
_Ripper Stefan though killing people left and right was never as evil as Elena,… this means what she is saying herself all along,… this is her,… this evil was inside her

"February" LOL! Too funny.

I love how you just have casual conversations of what role you'll play in BDSM with characters you adore, with your friends.

I think Katherine is in love with the idea of love. I don't know if you watch OUAT but in a way Katherine makes me think of Regina. She does all this evil shizz but she just wants to be loved and to love back. She'll never truly be happy though, because Damon loved her but that wasn't enough for her then.

yep,... When me and my friends get together ,... ;))) ,... enough to say that we leave no stone unturned,..
Regina is a good comparison,... though I do not think Katherine is as evil as the evil queen herself,... the amount of time she has spent running from one of the most powerful creatures ever,... it has taken its toll on her,.. she is 24/7 in survival mode,...

I admire your patience! Agreed, this deserves payment ;)

I don't really get it, they started the season with the new intro "Mystic Falls, this is my home" etc. but now they have completely abandoned that? Okay, it doesn't really matter anyway because I hated the new one.

Oooh I loved Caroline-Silas too, so much creepier!

Ripper Stefan could be kinda evil though. Don't you remember in 3x03 when he forced a man to drink his wifes blood just for the fun of it? I agree with what some of you guys were saying earlier, put Elena in the cellar. It is time for some vapm-intervention!

You can't imagine how happy I am that Elijah is back. He's definitely my favorite character. It's been a while since I really enjoyed a TVD episode. I have once again to applaus miss Nina Dobrev for her wonderful performance. I like that Turned-off Elena and Katherine aren't the same people. And Katherine's romance with Elijah is sweet, I hope she's genuine. I didn't really care for the Klaus/Caroline part, I don't know why the writers keep pulling that string when they clearly are never happening. Oh, and I love the agreement between Damon and Stefan about the future. Even if I feel like it won't happen soon.

Yes, Nina Dobrev really is talented! I remember in like season two when Elena could have become I vampire, by then I was completely opposed to this option because I thought she'd be just like Katherine and then they'd no longer need the real Katherine on the show. But she manages to still be snarky without being miss Pierce. And I love that Katherine is able to portray Elena almost perfectly but Elena kinda fails to impersonate her doppelgänger (and also, what was she thinking? Katherine would never wear that red, flowery dress).

I really hope that too. I didn't really get why people shipped those two before, I've always liked the thought of her and Damon together but now I get it. Elijah is the sweetest vampire ever<3

Loved the episode and love the review :)

- Have we seen the last of Katherine for a while?

- If, by some small chance, Katherine was being sincere with Elijah...this means that she is currently more likable/human than Elena. Incredible twist!

- We have never seen Damon with his switch flipped (maybe in flashbacks), but we have seen Stefan...Elena is by far the worst in my opinion, because she shows absolutely no spark of hope or humanity. With Stefan, you could always see that small spark.

- Have Caroline and Klaus reached some sort of common ground or friendship? Looks that way and I like that idea.

- I do care about the cure and who ultimately takes it. We need plot as well as character development. They can't just wander around aimlessly talking to each other.

- I'm excited for the Originals, although the characters will be missed in Mystic Falls.

"Elena is by far the worst in my opinion, because she shows absolutely no spark of hope or humanity." Elena hasn't killed any of her friends; Damon has, he killed Lexi, his brother's best friend and someone who never did anything to hurt him, out of plain spite all because he couldn't handle the guilt she reminds him of. He snapped Jeremy's neck once, despite not being sure whether he had his ring on or not. He had no problem sacrificing Bonnie and turning her mother into a vampire. He let one vampire girl who was sired to him to roam around New Orleans counting every brick in town for 80 years before ordering her to stop. And Damon proudly acknowledges all of those because "it's his thing",without any remorse,

I completely agree with everything you're saying, but I also understand where googlehoop is coming from. When Damon and Stefan had their humanity off there were still moments when we saw that they cared. For Damon it was somewhere in s01 in the ep where Stefan said that Damon was a monster that must be stopped, we saw him caressing the sleeping Elena's face. For Stefan it was after he almost drove her off wickey bridge (I think..). Elena hasn't had one of those moments yet (okay, maybe if you count the one where she interrupted Stefan and Caroline, but nah).

But that's also because they had what, two centuries to reach the point where they only pretend not to have any humanity, like Rose said. Elena is still a newbie vampire with a new lack of humanity. She should be given that much time to adjust as well. In the 1860s when Stefan just became a vampire and lost his humanity, wasn't he a monster too?

Does CW not realize a spinoff of Elijah, Klaus and Rebekah would be terrific? I find them far more interesting than the original crew, except for Bonnie...love the witch. Probably an unpopular opinion but I find Evil Elena as boring as Not-Evil Elena. And Damon has become a side note in the show, is this what happens when you fall in love with Elena. I will give it to Klaus and Caroline, they have something, even though I really liked Tyler. As far as the cure, I could really care less who gets it, who uses it and/or who becomes human.

"Encyclopedia Damon deducing the location of the cure reminded me, of all things, of Kramer puzzling out George's ATM code on Seinfeld." Such a weird yet perfect observation. I just re-watched that scene, and it still cracks me up.

After two mediocre episodes, this felt more like classic TVD (with thankfully less focus on Klaus). I was shocked/upset when Rebekah took the cure but was glad to find out that Katherine tricked us. And then I thought, wait, if she was cured, why would she in the upcoming spin-off? Anyway, I have to admit that Nina is really knocking it out of the park this season with all the different personalities. I want Elena's humanity to return, but at the same time, I want her to keep being a bad-ass. Can I have both?

Almost forgot: did anyone else read about Nina and Ian flying out to Toronto later today to visit a young girl who needs a new lung? Incredibly kind of them.

Check it out: http://www.eonline.com/news/402805/nina-dobrev-and-ian-somerhalder-to-visit-ailing-vampire-diaries-fan-mdash-see-the-video-message

I think it would be great plot twist if Damon accidently took the cure or was forced into taking it. I would SO love the irony of the person who wanted it the least getting cured.

Anyone else out there wondering if the writers named the town Willoughby as on homage to the Twilight Zone episode "A Stop at Willoughby"?

Ha. Are we seriously supposed to believe that Katherine is being all genuine and regretful and loves or even cares for Elijah? Puh-lease. Let's remind ourselves that this is both a show and character that lives on schemes and fake-outs. Besides, isn't Kat supposed to "truly" love Stefan? If Elijah's the one with her heart why would she have gone to such lengths to torture Elena for no good reason other than the fact that she's the more innocent version of herself being picked by the man she wants? And Plec has gone on record distinguishing both characters with this: "Everything Katherine says is a lie and everything Elena says is the truth." I think Kat just knew what card to play to make Elijah believe in her and want to help her. She's set it up to make it look like it's all in Elijah's hands but it's definitely in her's after the performance she gave and what we all know about Elijah's nobility.

All that aside, there was a lot in this episode that was cool and interesting but also a lot that was pretty anticlimactic. The good was Kat's extensive compulsion going throughout a whole town and her having been living this, as Rebekkah put it, "old lady" lifestyle. It was definitely unexpected. I've been picturing her in an L.A. penthouse with a Kelvin Klein model love slave. But it was just as fabulous that Damon wouldn't give her any credit for possibly being more complex - "You're not that deep." Hahaha.

What really let me down was the awaited-with-bated-breath Kat & Elena meet up since Jeremy's death. Now, I knew it wouldn't be the drag out we all wanted for the fact that Elena's emotionless at the moment, but I was hoping for more than the few casual snipes at a diner. Speaking of, really, they have Kat cornered and they bring her to a diner to interrogate her? That was awful. Then there's the Elena-impersonating-Kat scene, which went on for about 7 seconds before she was found out off screen. To top it off, Elijah wasn't even surprised at her being a vampire because he'd been told beforehand. Again, like with Kat, this should have been a HUGE scene when they were reunited and so much had gone down but this was also downplayed.

I really wish they would have just dedicated this episode to Katherine and her enslaved Stepford town, with Elijah popping in at the end to get his own episode next. I will always have this problem with TVD apparently - them whipping through plots like they just found out they've been cancelled. The romantic stuff is lingered on, conversations are repeated again and again, and they always have time for town/school parties and charity events...but major stuff happens in the time it takes to blink and you hardly get anything out of it.

Okay, I had like six different heart attacks every time Rebrkah took/almost took the cure. If she became human... No. Just no. And Evilena is so freaking BA it was awesome to see Katherine even a little freaked out by her. What speaks to the greatness of Nina Dobrev's excellent acting is that I didn't even think for one moment that it was double acting. To me, Elena and Katherine were truly different people.

I love that Nina Dobrev almost has 4 characters (or at least 4 very different personalities to play):
Standard Elena, Evilena (aka Fun Elena), Normal scheme-y Katherine, and pretending-to-be-nice/caring/etc Katherine.

I'm thinking that she has 'flipped the switch' and is just playing them. At that last scene, before she murdered the lady, I was thinking that she was going to say something like, 'I HAVE turned the switch. This is me. This is who I really am.' and that would be the ultimatum of the episode. I've always wanted to think that Elena is not the great, compassionate person everyone pretends that she is, and that she truly is just a total monster. And that would make everyone happy because it would explain why she murdered Kol and didn't feel any remorse because everyone has been trying to figure that out.

Elena’s a bad driver, swerving all over the place. Where is Sheriff Forbes when we need her?? This lady needs to move to Pennsylvania.
Do Rebekah and Elena really think no one can hear them yelling at each other? Wow. This isn’t Mystic Falls, sometimes people notice things.
That Klaus was in SO MUCH pain. Hate that.
Caroline?? Seriously Silas????? Pissed at you, bro. You officially are the worst. Transforming into someone else and getting all romantic with their lover (Klaus translation: lovah) is TOTALLY UNCOOL. Were you not in High School? Did you guys have this problem in High School, or was it just me?
As if the random person Elena sees in the car immediately after she knew Katherine was close was OBVIOUSLY going to be her. Yeah right.
Elena is like, ‘Yup. My bro died. NBD.’ WTF?? Yes, she has her humanity off, but that does not make it okay to forget about JerHulk. As you can see from my new profile pic. #NeverForget.
And Stefan and Damon come in and start talking really loud. Grr. Didn’t you see me telling Rebekah and Elena that you can’t talk that loudly in the middle of a crowded place? THEY WILL HEAR YOU, IDIOT.
Elena was so mean in this episode. She was like, ‘Gimme all ur clothes, girl.’ and Katherine was like, ‘Naw.’ and then Rebekah was like, ‘Yup.’ and Katherine was like, ‘Ok fine. But it will never work because I am way too awesome & also have a personality.’ and Elena’s like, ‘Ok fine. But it will never work because I am way too awesome and also have a personality.’ and Rebekah’s like, ‘Erm, that’s ‘&’ not ‘and’.’ Elena is the worst. Do love her and Rebekah though. Relena FTW. She wanted to take Katherine’s DAYLIGHT RING. And then she was like, ‘Also, PS, pls give me ur shoes because you know how to dress nicely and I don’t.’ I guess that’s the benefit of being a vampire? That you have tons of time to find out what looks good on you? I guess that’s the best thing.
OMG HELL NO ELIJAH AND ELENA NO NO NO NO NO!!!! At least he thought it was Katherine? Does that make this a Kalijah kiss? Pls say yes.
The triangle on Klaus’s back hasn’t been turned into a circle yet. Circles are WAY more awesome. Triangles are not awesome.
Katherine’s loosing her touch. Is it really so hard to get some goldfish or something? Wow.
Klaus was groaning in pain, and Caroline was, what? Playing on her phone? Texting? What was she doing? Stop being a teen and help the guy that loves you, Caroline.
Caroline ripped at Klaus with pliers and there was actually nothing there? Wow. Is it really that expensive to show part of the White Oak Stake? It shouldn’t be. It really really shouldn’t be.
‘Didn’t have a pony to distract her?’ Really Damon? This isn’t Caroline we’re talking about. This is Rebekah, and she (as far as I know) is not going to desperately need a PONY for a distraction. Get your fictional vampire characters straight, Damon.
Just after my Kalijah dream came through, they had to break up in the same episode. My eyeballs are leaking. Very unhappy, guys.

LIKE

That Klaus only put his shirt on for one scene of the entire episode.
That Klaus’s tattoo is birds flying away from a sea lion.
That Elijah is BACK. And he is back in a BIG way. Love this guy so much.
That Kalijah is HERE. And I am officially a seer or something.
That Katherine is back. And she is also back in a BIG way. Love this girl so much too.
D’you see that random flock of school kids? They were like, ‘Ugh. So bored.’ Kids, no one is more bored than your teachers. They were actually staring off into the distance like, ‘When is this over even?’
That Damon was SO PISSED that team Relena had taken his car, and the most annoying thing he could think of them doing in it was scratching the paint. Or harming it in some way. Not driving to one of the many enemies I’m sure Damon has and asking them to please come and murder him, not calling Stefan and telling him how Damon had let them get away. LOL.
The look on Klaus’s face when Caroline comforted him in his pain.
Klaus’s sudden sense of mortality when he realized he might die. He made me believe it for a moment even though I know he’s getting a spin off and obviously he won’t be a ghost for it. He won’t be, right?
Rebekah’s still into torture. I bet she got an A+ on her last test. Straight A student. I can imagine that conversation with her parents (if they were alive):
‘Oh look Mikael, Rebekah got an A in Honors Torture! Aren’t you proud?’ - Esther
‘Of course!! That’s great Rebekah! But you’ve never really struggled in Torture too much.’ - Mikael
#LOLSoAwkward.
Rebekah’s still pulling the mean girl act. Katherine’s all like, ‘I ain’t got nuthin’.’ and then Rebekah’s like, *Phone Grab* and Katherine’s like, ‘Darn. I am a 500+ year old vampire and yet I still keep everything in my phone.’ Though I am kind of worried that she doesn’t look to be very busy. The only thing on her calendar was ‘meet em’ and apparently vampires don’t use capitalization? Use proper English, vampires!!
‘I don’t know if this is some new way of flirting, but it sucks.’ OMG LOL. I laughed so hard. Caroline, I love you so much. I thought he would have guessed when she mentioned she had to be organizing three prom committees, unless for some reason Silas is super spirited and all that? I can imagine Silas on the cheer squad. Haha. Great mental image.
When Caroline asked Klaus why he called HER of all people, and he was like, ‘Uh . . . ‘cause.’ but his face was like, ‘I want YOU to pull this thing out of my back and then shirtless hug me so much girl.’ Klaroline.
That Klaus has pliers. WHY does Klaus have pliers? Like Klaus does yard work. Maybe it’s a good torture tool? Should I call Rebekah over and ask? I laughed anyway.
‘That guy got his neck snapped in New York, and this guy is royally pissed off.’ LOL.
Katherine was like a teen who didn’t want anyone else wearing the same outfit. ‘Like that’s gonna happen.’ Relax, vampires. Act your age pls.
After Elena pulled the fork out of Katherine’s hand, she was waving it around, and was like, ‘Yup. For anyone who is looking in this crowded diner, this is ketchup. Which I have ALL OVER my fork for some reason. And was totes NOT in the hand of this girl who looks like my identical twin. But isn’t. She’s just my doppelganger and is also way more awesome / chill than I am.’
Katherine and Rebekah’s banter. Loved. Give me more of these ladies, pls.
‘Are you really that dumb, or just naturally blond?’ OUCH. I’m not blond, but I do take offense at blond jokes. You’re pushing the limits, Katherine. Be careful.
That Katherine abbreviated Elijah’s name EM which would actually stand for Elijah Mikaelson, no? Nice.
That Elijah kissed ‘Katherine’. OMG KALIJAH. I honestly NEVER thought that would actually happen. Regular witch-burning rules apply.
‘She went to meet up with a friend of mine. You might know him? An Original brother, great taste’ I don’t know if you did this, but I added the words, ‘In clothes’ after that. It was necessary.
‘Oh my God. You DO have a heart!’ I know this was said sarcastically, but I imagined it in my head as sweet. Yes, it kind of ruined the moment that Caroline was currently pulling a stake out of Klaus’s chest, but y’know. Wind some lose some and all that. He WAS shirtless though!!
Ouch, Klaus. That is a huge splinter. Tweezers won’t work on that one. Nope, gotta get me some pliers. Do you guys think he went to Home Depot? Staples? Where do Originals go when they need to buy pliers for large white-oak splinter removers?
Elijah be makin’ threats. Sweet. Protecting your lady-love, buddy. Kalijah FTW. BTW Is that a good suit? I hope BCF didn’t totally rip you off, bud.
Elijah was a JerHulk fan. He was pretty sad when Elena mentioned his one true love murdered Mystic Fall’s very own JerHulk.
Rebekah insulted Katherine’s taste. LOL. Girl, it’s only because Katherine’s wearing Elena’s clothes. Normally she looks great. Also at least her house doesn’t contain like ten cats. Then she would be a lonely old CAT lady with bad taste. I shudder at the thought.
‘The two rational vampires that we are.’ Hmm. I think I have a new favorite oxymoron. Rational Vampires. I like the sound of that one!!
What’s up with Damon, you guys? I thought vervain heals faster than that? Huh. Weirdest thing.
OMG. Rebekah is human. I’m happy for her. I really am. But I’m not sure that was what she really wanted. And another thing: how are they going to kill Silas now? Mixed feelings.
‘Find my Katerina beneath this . . . Katherine facade.’ I am so glad that Katherine and Katerina have the same first couple letters. I was worried I might have to change Kalijah to something else. Whew. Close call. Also, LOL Katherine facade. Haha.
‘I’m sure the writer sounds positively gifted.’ Tooting your own horn, much, Elijah? That’s okay. I still love you.
I feel bad for Nina Dobrev. It must be awkward to snap your own neck. #SoWeird.
Aw. The cure was a fake. Well, that was clever, Katherine. Bravo. Sad for Rebekah, but the things I mentioned earlier are now all solved. Mixed emotions again.
KALIJAH MAKEUP SCENE!!! (Sort of, but good enough, right?)
The box Katherine gave Elijah was kind of like a ring box, you know? I pretended there was a ring inside and that she was proposing to him. Did even have to change the dialogue, really.
‘You don’t have a smart brother’ LOL. Elijah, you modest modest (well-dressed) man.
Darn it. Klaus put a shirt on. Shucks.
‘Complication speaking.’ OMG LOL. Have I mentioned how much I love Elijah? TONS.
Um. So Stefan’s officially out. As soon as Elena’s human. Great. Don’t actually care about this love triangle (since, oh right around the time when Katherine first shows up in S2) so y’know. Whatever. When’s the next Kalijah scene?
I like Elena’s definition of ‘consequence.’ At first I was like, ‘what? Is she going to crash all their parties? Be a total bitch all the time? Just be a general nuisance and not put milk on the shopping list when she uses the last of it?’ and then I was like, ‘Oh. So THAT’S what she thinks a ‘consequence’ is. Oh joy.’

That's basically it. Uh . . . I guess I'll do a couple

NOTES N' QUOTES

– Meanwhile in Mystic Falls, Part I: Let’s assume amnesiac Bonnie was scouring the internet to catch up on all the gruesome events that last week’s near-death experience wiped from her brain. Let’s also assume she got as far as the weirdly accented dude on the island before getting distracted by that Game of Thrones House generator game.
- Haha. Totally forgot Bonnie was a character. Whoops! BTW There is a GOT House generator game? Where??

– Meanwhile in Mystic Falls, Part II: And what do we think Matt was up to this week? I’ll say he’s found most of the cool rooms in Lockwood Manor, but he’s still searching for the secret passageway from the lounge to the conservatory.
- Foolish one. Matt is trying desperately to convince Liz that he should be the next mayor. Vote Matt Donovan for Mayor!!! I'm making posters. Speaking of which . . . I got to make a run to Staple's to get more construction paper and markers . . . Got to make plans for this stuff!

– Rebekah’s oh-so-helpful Katherine impersonation tips: “Not quite slutty enough. I think you need more eyeliner” and “Throatier. More mannish.”
- 'Being Katherine for Dummies.' In bookstores near you.

Random Fact: There is a book called 'An Abundance of Katherines.' I saw it. It is true. I laughed so hard too. Wow. Still laughing, actually.

Just the right amount of every character and actor to make a great episode. Evilena (who is just fantastic). Katherine. Caroline. Rebekah. No Bonnie. No Shane-thing. Minimal Stefan. I'm really hoping they never cast Silas. Cast is too big. Was happy to get more Candice Accola.

I seriously wish they'd give up turning Elena human against her own will! Teach her how to maneuver the switch, but she's been against taking the cure before and after having the switch on. And Stefan's idea is to cure her then leave her after she lost everything, like she'd be going back to some family member or friends who aren't supernatural. Everyone questions why Rebekah would want to be human and have a normal life, but wants to cram it down Elena's throat when she'll never have a normal life even if she does become human, at very least she's got a bff that'll never age and Klaus will start back with the hybrids.
But on to other stuff in the episode, actually I loved everything about the episode except the Salvatore brothers for once. I love Elijah and am glad he's back, also kinda glad Rebekha is still a vamp, she'd be no fun as human and we'd either never see her or she'd get killed off. Clever Katherine is always loved. And a shirtless Klaus is always welcomed even if he does have a feather tattoo like so many hipsters and girls on tumblr. I actually wouldn't mind seeing the Original tv show now that I remember Elijah, Rebekah, and Klaus are my favorite characters. Guest appearances by Katherine and Caroline would be welcomed.

Should I just tell everyone to never take me seriously no matter what I say? I should probably say that. What I meant was that when I first saw it, the 'feather' looked like a sea lion. Or a seal. Or something. I've by now realized it's a feather, but at first. I thought it was pretty funny.

So...did it bother anyone else that the cure to vampirism is just floating around in a little plastic baggie? Isn't that kind of a fragile way to store it? Besides being a total anachronism - I'm doubting plastic baggies were around 1,000 years ago, or whenever Silas was buried....

When Rebecca took the fake cure for a moment I was thinking oh god please don't tell me they're going to kill her off for a few more episodes but then she woke up and found she was still a vampire and I was happy again. Can Stefan just go back to his ripper persona coz he was really getting on my nerves at the start when he was mocking Damon for being bested by the girls, if it had been the other way around the 2 of them would've tricked Stefan a lot more easily than they did Damon. The Klaus/Caroline scenes where amazing and funny. Nina Dobrev should get some kind of award for this season, her acting was amazing whether she was playing Elena or Katherine made even better by the fact that they are almost similar yet she makes them still feel different. I liked how Elijah was able to deduce that Elena was different yet couldn't tell that Katherine could be playing him. This episode makes me question if either of the Salvatores actually love Elena for who she is and not for who they want her to be coz if it were the former then they wouldn't be trying to "fix" Elena. I think the acting in this episode was some of the best for the series from Joseph Morgan acting like he's dying to Rebecca trying to explain why she wants to give up her vamperism to Elijah still trying to see the goodness that Katherine once had.

I liked everything about this episode. Seriously! and all the crazy was just in the perfect right amount.

Klaus and caroline face off was in one word… perfection

Elena and rebekah torturing Katherine by giving her a style make-under. Hilarious!!! To give the new Elena a much needed … leather jacket!!!!

Everyone's realizations: Stefan finally realizing its not healthy being obsessed over one girl and he should probably get a life. Damon realizing his "thing", Elena realizing this is the best version of her by far and Elijah realizing that even though he suppose to be the older wise brother he is just as stupid and screwed up like the rest of his family.

Bonnie or professor shane was nowhere to be seen in this episode. Yey

Klaus tattoo.

My one and only complain and it's really small tiny one is please hire an actor to play silas because this is starting to look like the first evil from buffy.

But really great episode !!! :) 

It was a truly great episode! As much as I hate hearing the word "cure" every five minutes, the good parts (Elijah! Katherine!) made up for it entirely.
I enjoy seeing the Emotionless Elena in action. I have never been a real Elena hater, since I'm quite tolerant towards the fictional characters, but now she is really something! So much more fun, so much more unpredictable. And again, huge respect to Nina for playing these two characters in different stages of their development and making them all so distinct form one another. The bad part of this situation is that it feels so... temporary. I don't think the writers would decide to keep Elena like that forever and maybe it's a good thing, since what we see now is entirely different person than our protagonist. Well, I guess I should just enjoy it when it lasts. I really liked all the Elena-Elijah moments, like someone mentioned before - we could see there some little blinks of old Elena. Btw, as they were speaking of dead brothers, I'm wondering if Elijah knows who killed his own brother...
Next thing... Katherine! It was sooo good to finally see her for more than five minutes. She is just a great character, with her attitude and ability to survive... It was surprising to see her almost beaten up by the gang (having an Original on someone's side never hurts), but she managed to handle the situation in a really Katherinish way. When Rebekah took the cure, I was afraid that it was it, but I had this little hope that Katherine had some trick up her sleeve, like, I don't know, having two bottles in that chest or something, and ta daa, she saved the cure! If I were her, I would probably prefer to cure Klaus and kill him, just to make sure he doesn't change his mind, but I guess she doesn't really have that option, since she could die along with him. I hope that this time she stays a bit longer in the show. They opened up an interesting path for her character - now her only mission is to survive, but after dealing with that Klaus situation, she might actually get a real life. It would probably be boring to see her turn into an all-good person, besides, some things probably grew on her too strongly to suddenly get rid of them, but she could have much more peaceful existence now. And the idea of Kalijah... Well, I had never thought about it myself, but after reading some comments on this site, I actually got used to that pairing, and, ta daa, now we can see it happening. It's really sweet to see how Elijah is struggling to find "his" Katerina (btw, I just love when one of the Originals calls her this way) after all these years. And she... well, she did give him the cure and I don't know if a word she said was true or if it was just a very clever manipulation. Maybe Kalijah could really be a thing... except for The Originals, well, could they bring Katherine to New Orleans as well? I don't really think so, because then this show would get too TVDish, well, who knows...
Speaking of Elijah - I'm so happy he's back! I've been waiting for him for ages! He really is awesome with his honor, nobility, elegant suit, class and morals a bit higher than we see in most of other characters on TVD. I'm glad the cure is in his hands, he probably is the most responsible person to carry it now. Personally, I think that Silas should get it ASAP and I don't understand how all the other people still chase it for their selfish reasons. Okay, they didn't really see how dangerous he is... But, hey, we'd already heard a lot about him even before he was raised. And Stefan knows about this triangles etc., so why exactly none of them thinks that getting rid of Silas is the highest priority right now? They sometimes seem so selfish and careless... I'm wondering whether the writers really are going to get rid of him so soon. I mean, with the Originals leaving, we probably need some powerful villain... And what exactly is Silas anyway? I thought we established he used to be a witch, but somehow become a vampire and he isn't a witch anymore, since you cannot be both - but he's pretty good at some tricks. It's a bit weird to see this powerful villain with no face of his own, though. He just... doesn't seem to be a real person. On the other hand, it makes him even scarier, since he can suddenly turn out to be beside you when you thought you were talking to your best friend. And there is one thing I don't get - maybe I just forgot some detail from last week or something. After completing that third massacre, shouldn't we get the Other Side already in our world? Did it really happen, we just haven't seen any of these people yet, or there is some catch I missed, like it will happen after Silas dies or something? I seriously think it could be an interesting solution, now, with the Originals leaving, getting some old villains wouldn't hurt and it would be awesome to see some of our favorites being back. On the other hand - can the show really bring all of these actors back, don't they have some other commitments? And if anyone comes back, everyone probably should, because why wouldn't they show up in Mystic Falls? And the other problem - some of these people is probably seriously pissed with Elena and other characters, so having to deal with all of them at once... It could be hard.
I don't get why Rebekah still wants the cure so desperately. I know, human life, peace, life on her own, blah, blah, blah... But, as Katherine said, all this burden of the past would probably stay with her, unless she asked someone to compel her to forget it. And even if that is not enough - girl, do you seriously think you would get much of that life? You probably made enough enemies who would gladly get rid of you. Damn, even the Salvatores could have killed her right away in Katherine's house - and she still didn't learn her lesson. And since taking the cure would probably equal death for her, she could just save herself trouble and get staked. Well, probably nothing bad will happen to her anytime soon, since she is supposed to be in TO, but watching her try to pretty much get killed is a bit annoying. I will be glad when this plot is over and she will be back to being a great, non-suicidal character she usually is.
The Salvatore brothers, well, I always enjoy these two teaming up. I get their need to save Elena form being a heartless monster, but, as I said before, the cure should be used differently. I don't know how they can bring her back... but they should think about some other way. It's an interesting reversal - to see Stefan fight for Elena the way she fought for him back in his ripper days. I don't understand Damon's hesitation when Rebekah asked him for a reason to give the cure to Elena. Yes, Human Elena running back to Stefan is a strong argument, but didn't we establish that now she is not herself, she is stone cold bitch etc.? As much as Damon likes having fun and being carefree, I don't think that Elena's body with no real Elena's soul inside should be enough for him. He did fall for that girl the way she was; now she has nothing in common with her former self. And I want to believe that what Damon wants is a real feeling, not hanging out with the girl who would gladly screw him over if she felt like doing it. And Stefan... well, I don't believe he will really give up on Elena. We've been there before, last season, anyone? Elena was supposed to make her choice, the other brother was supposed to leave, nothing worked. And I'm glad, because what would this show be like without its main characters? Though we probably could use a little break from the triangle drama, so I think he can move on, but not move out.
And I have one more question - what kind of deal with Klaus were they talking about? I'm apparently getting really sclerotic, because I can't recall anything about it.
What else? Ah, Klaroline, of course. It goes without saying that I enjoyed their scenes, I would probably enjoy any Klaroline scene... forget it, I would enjoy any Klaus scene. Maybe except for his scenes with Hayley, but it's a different story. It was... well, it was somewhat new to see him fear and suffer because of some more powerful villain. I'm not sure if it's necessarily a good thing, because poor Klaus... Okay, I'm not objective here. Objectively speaking, he probably deserved a lot more for what he's done and it's probably good because of character development or something. So, this episode was awaited by Klaroline fans, wasn't it? I was quite puzzled after seeing last week promo and Caroline acting weird, then I read some theories about Silas impersonating her, which would be quite disappointing if it concerned all their scenes. Fortunately, we got both and it was, again, an important step in their relation - we can clearly see that Caroline, even though she should probably hate him, still keeps coming back to him... and she probably would like him to be a better person, to be able to like him without feeling that there's something wrong about it. And he... well, he definitely isn't a good guy and it's good, because it's Klaus, though he happens to be quite nice when it comes to her. Forgiving Tyler would probably too much for him, but, like I said the other day - baby steps. I think he probably just doesn't want Tyler anywhere near Caroline, which is pretty mean way of getting rid of the competition, but, well, again - it's Klaus, we can't expect him to suddenly become a nice guy. And generally, I don't think he's particularly concerned about chasing his victims, just look how long Katherine managed to escape him and he isn't really going after her, just chilling in MF. Well, generally the writers do everything to bring Klaus and Caroline closer and I have no idea where this is going, since Klaus is about to leave for New Orleans... which would probably be the end of any possible relationship. Unless they intend to surprise us and bring Caroline to the spin-off, but, again, it would get too TVDish then. They could keep some relation between shows, like phone calls or guest appearances, but it probably wouldn't be enough. I just hope they don't find Klaus some new interest in New Orleans right after he moves there (like, for example, Hayley), since Klaus falling for any girl he sees... well, it would make Caroline much less special, just like someone said before on this site. He is not the type of guy who falls deeply in love any time he sees a pretty face. But I'm afraid they would do that, because romance appears to be almost a must-have in most of the shows, movies or books of this kind. Would they be able to carry the series without giving the main hero some love interest? I hope, but I'm afraid I'm wrong. Well, let's just wait and see... And enjoy Klaroline getting closer to the friendship path as long as it lasts. And, last but not least - Klaus's smile, aaah, I'm melting!

Agree on all the Klaus / Klaroline things. I remember bethm06 and I once agreed that TVD could pretty much be described in one word: Klaroline. It was a joke, but that's one of the only things I care about anyway. Anyway, I have actual things to talk about with this comment!
I always assumed Elijah knew about Kol dying, via Klaus or Rebekah email / text / phone call but he didn't seem too pissed at Elena. Maybe they weren't close? But I like the thought that he doesn't know yet. Imagine his anger . . . he was pretty mad about JerHulk, and Jer wasn't even his brother! I'm excited to see where this goes!

I love Katherine. I love her in all ways. I love her evil, I love her human, I love her in love, I love her scheming, I love her in a box, and I love her with a fox. Or when she's being a fox. Either.

So happy that Kalijah (name credits to InsanelyMe) is going well. Sometimes I think it's just me and my besties who care about my crazy ships, and it's comments like these that remind me there are other people who care. Kalijah. Love. They were awkward in this episode, as InsanelyMe pointed out, but I'm hoping they'll get better as time goes on. Grow chemistry and all that. I just think the actors need to get the feel of each other more.

Okay, some things you didn't get:

I don't think the Other Side will be destroyed until someone (Bonnie) does a spell using the power from the massacres. Maybe that's where she was this episode? Google searching 'how to destroy the Other Side.' That's probably it.

The 'deal' was something that was discussed here, but I don't think is was hugely mentioned in the show. It was that Katherine (who is still being hunted half-heartedly by Klaus) would trade the cure (the only thing that Klaus is scared of, and hence he wants to get his hands on) to Klaus in exchange for his promise that he'l stop hunting her. Which is BS probably because couldn't he just break his promise? Anyway. Trying to answer questions, not raise them.

Lol, Inigo, you're the best. That pretty much sums up my love for Katherine as well.

I think he's like Katherine in that respect. He'll keep his word if either of these two things are present:
1) Keeping his word will better his position in some way shape or form.
2) Keeping his word will not effect him or the people he cares about in any way shape or form.

Ah yes. Tatia. That would be cool too, but I think Esther killed her and put her blood in the Original's cups at a feast or something so that they would turn into vampires. Flashbacks though!

Best part of this episode: Elijah!!!! Yes!!!!

I think the bros just need to lay off of Elena, just accept her for her and let her find her way on her own. That's all she ever wanted. Since she turned Stefan has done nothing but try to "fix" her and now Damon. The whole switch thing is confusing, I don't think it can be totally turned off. She is feeling irritated and angry because they keep bullying her about the cure. I love how she's standing up for herself! You go girl!

Overall, I enjoyed this ep more than most recent TVDs, except that the shard wasn't actually inside Klaus' shoulder, but some kind of mind-trick, bleh. Diner and fish-tank scenes were fun.

This was a wonderful episode. Although we were missing our innocent-gone-bitch/witch and blondie, we had quite the cast set up, and I was very happy with... everything.

1. Elijah Mikaelson: I love this character so much, and seeing him so emotional made my heart squash into a mucky mess. He cried; I screamed and writhed. It's a give-and-take thing. However, I would've liked a bit more backstory on the whole Kalijah affair because it gave me a rushed WTF feeling. BUT (a lot of switches in feelings), the shock at seeing Elijah kiss Elena so willingly was hilarious because I also sort of ship Elejah (it's confusing), and i was curious if Elijah knew that it was Katerina before the kiss or if he figured it out afterwards. Then, in that stone hallway somewhere in the town, Elijah had quite a few "ah-dur" moments, especially after figuring out that Elena had her switch flipped and why. It turns out that it's just Rebekah who likes switched-flip Elena, and even that's temporary. Jeez, it was strange having Elijah treated like a dunce. And how Elijah had been gone and so out of it for so long that he didn't even know Rebekah wanted the cure. Ha! She's been bitching about it for half the season!

2. Klaroline: Not everybody ships it, but this was still quite the episode for them. There were so many quotes and moments where I was squealing and giggling at them. The "new flirting" thing was hilarious. And, on a darker note, it was interesting that after all that screaming and banging fists on tables and couples fighting, that Klaus was only in pain in his head. It was really creepy and presents an even more psychological dilemma than the whole flipped-switch ordeal: Silas can get in ANYBODY'S mind, and he will do it freely. Anyway, they're FRIENDS! I was having quite the tweeting party about that. About how, for once, Klaus wasn't forcing Caroline into anything; he asked her if they were FRIENDS and SHE set up the details, and then he secretly obliged. And, yeesh, how he grabbed her arm so casually and she just poked him in the stomach like FRIENDS and everything was so FRIENDLY. Mmhmm, the Klaroline was pretty good. My favorite scene, actually, was the couple fight they had, FINALLY screaming at each other for all the s*** they've dealt with in the matter of each other. "I should have turned my back on you ages ago!" That line actually contradicts what she said last time about how she did stuff back when "he was worth it" but had basically given up now. This most recent "turn my back on you" junk actually implies that she never gave up on him in the first place. Plus it was funny how Klaus got so pissed that she turned her back on him. They're like a couple. Mmhmm. Don't deny it.

3. The cure: Rebekah got jazzed. Haha, I guessed it was a fake from point one. But all the hype over this, Good Lord, everybody was in la-la-land up in Pennsylvania. "Gimme, gimme, gimme!" I swear, it's like tots fighting over the new toy in the nursery. However, Katherine giving it to Elijah was quite interesting. Does Katherine (Katerina?) really care for Elijah? Probably. But would she still sacrifice him before herself? F***, yeah, she most likely would. Again, I majorly shipped Kalijah before this, but I guess that was just the two back in the 1400s, for when I saw them together yesterday, I just had this "Ehhh" feeling, like it didn't matter. I found her giving the cure to him to be a logical move for TVD because now Klaus can get it from Elijah, and I didn't feel the romance in it. Phooey on them. But... yeah. Cure s*** just got really really real.

4. Side Notes: Silas in Caroline's body? Interesting. I actually approve of all the body snatching. - The mind trick Katherine played was marvelous, and I also wished to have seen more of this. - They have officially started saying "Previously on The Vampire Diaries" again and started playing music from the seasons before again. That makes me too insanely happy. - Salvatore brother bonding! Pretty cool. - I found this episode so entrancing that I didn't even notice that Bonnie wasn't in it until I read this review. Oh. - I was so happy with the Klaroline until Caroline brought up Tyler again, and then I was just like "UGH". But then again, she also FINALLY pointed out that those two times that Klaus saved her, he was also the one who had put her in danger. I love the saved-her moments, but it bugged me that nobody had pointed that out until now.

5. Lastly, my favorite line of the episode, just barely skimming ahead of the Klaroline script:
"We're... FRIENDS."--Katherine
"UGH." "EW." "OH." "EUGH."--Everybody
That was just so perfect, and it shows how little the Salvatores care about Katherine anymore, too. I know they stopped caring a while ago, but... the way they don't give two shits about her anymore is still funny. And the fact that they found it as disgusting as I now find it (How? I don't know. I just stopped shipping it suddenly, goddammit.) was great. Just marvelous.

Love this comment so much. I'll go through one at a time.

1) LOVE ELIJAH. On that we agree, my friend. Yes, Kalijah in real life was kind of underwhelming, but I think time might be the cure. Or maybe Katherine ends up with the actual cure down her throat and for some reason wants to be called Katerina and starts another love triangle between Klaus and Elijah? I would watch that spin off. Any day.

1.5) Also, Elijah is going to have to join Bonnie's frantic midnight Google-searching parties (come on, we've all had these, no?) and try desperately to find out what has happened since he's been gone. I wonder what will happen when he finds out about Kol!!

2. =D. That's my entire reaction. Love everything in this section. Except that no one should have to use 'friendly' (I'm sorry. 'FRIENDLY') that much. Ever. It's so true though.

3. Just taking the Kalijah stuff on this. I think it's hard to believe that just because Katherine wouldn't sacrifice herself for Elijah means that she doesn't have feelings for him. It's Katherine's nature. It's her character. She wouldn't sacrifice her life for anyone's. At the end, when she gave him the cure, I thought that was a great scene. Elijah was rightfully pissed at her. She lied to him (don't know why he didn't expect this, but whatever) and she murdered (sort of) the lady he was talking to. I don't know how I feel about Elejah. I'll figure it out later.

4. That was my reaction. 'FRIENDS.' *shudder*

My Klaroline heart died and went to heaven this episode. I'm a little scared about Klaus being friendzoned with Caroline now, but I think there is definitely hope for them to move into friends with benefits territory at some point. His smile at the end after she gave him the little tiny smile just made me turn into a giant puddle of mush. They are so darn cute. So much electricity, even with just a little arm touch.

And LOVED that Klaus actually thanked her for helping him.

HUGE step forward for Klaroline. Just please, Julie Plec and co, don't develop this storyline just to take it all away from us in a few episodes when the Originals leave for their own show.

When you said 'friends with benefits' I immediately thought of Rose, and that made me so sad. If they drop this veil thing (this plot line is so dumb / confusing) they'd better freakin' bring back Rose and Jasmine Guy and JerHulk. Otherwise I WILL BE PISSED.

I don't think Klaus has thanked anyone before. Ever. Caroline is bettering his personality AND his manners!! You go, girl!

Just give me an episode of Klaus shirtless, a couple Christmas Carol Massacres, some Elijah scenes where he is dressed fancily, and maybe a JerHulk or Kol scene or two, and I will love it. That's why I'm going to watch TO. I can ignore Hayley, but if they try to put her in the same scenes as Klaus when he's shirtless, I will stop immediately. No questions asked. Nothing but the reappearance of Jasmine Guy and/or Rose will stop that. And I doubt that will happen. Unfortunately.

I just don't like how the creators of the show seem to think humanity is just sunshine and rainbows. As fun as evil Elena is it makes it seem like humanity and having emotions means only the good ones. If Elena had really flipped the switch and her emotions were gone than she wouldn't feel the emotions of anger, irritation, or jealousy, she would be an indifferent robot. I think Elena is showing a lot of emotions, so I don't think they should say it shuts off your humanity or emotions but that it eliminates your conscience, that way she could do random good things just cause but she could also ignore anything that requires to much effort or self sacrifice. Actually that is what I think they should mean by flipping the switch that it just become more basic instincts and self preservation.

An essential theme of this show, and particularly this season with the cure plot, is whether or not vampirism is a curse or a blessing; whether humanity is sunshine and rainbows, or weakness and death. The prevailing message is almost always that immortality is much more difficult and unpleasant to deal with than it may seem. Of the three main characters - Damon, Elena and Stefan - 2 of them openly wish they were still human, and the other tried to die rather than make the transition, only to have it forced on him. One of the Originals wants to be human, and now we're seeing Katherine, of all people, get a bit misty over who she used to be. Over and over, we're shown that the vamps who think vampires are better are in some way evil or bad. This is why Caroline is so awesome: up til now, she's done great with this vamp thing, relatively speaking. At the same time, she killed a guy (and now 12 witches) and has to deal with that constantly. We had the drama of her father refusing to complete the transition, versus the lingering sadness when Bonnie's mother did. Humanity is not always awesome - in fact, it's becoming quite rare. But Elena's shut down is just further proof that without humanity, you're just a monster.

But agree that Elena seems to be cheating the whole no-emotions bit - she sure seems to have plenty of bitterness and spite. Same with Bad Stefan - he was always so into tormenting Elena and Damon. Elena doesn't just act out of self-preservation. Absence of conscience is a better description, for sure.

I think the only reason they could say immortality is more difficult than humanity is because they have all the extra time to live with the average ups and downs of living. Life is what you make of it. Caroline has managed to live a pretty normal life so far, if it weren't for being dragged into the bigger conspiracies of the show, I don't think being immortal is the problem it's having the power and strength to do whatever they want that can occasionally go to your head, though that could be said of any human too (dictators). Also as far as Rebekah goes she wants a family, which is a legitimate reason to want to be human but that doesn't really have anything to with morality or humanity, there are average people that can't have kids. As for Damon he wanted to die because he loved Katherine and wanted to live forever with her, thus thinking she was dead he wanted to die too, once he knew she was still alive he was on board cause he thought he could get her back.

Flag
I agree, she's obviously feeling and I think with all the Stefan trying to "fix" her after she turned its starting to piss her off. They still act like she needs to be "fixed" I'm sorry but it was not that easy for any of them to turn the switch off and it feels like their just bullying her. I understand where she's coming from.

This show has fallen off, even better episodes like this one seem fleeting. I think killing off all the adults on this show was a bad move. Too much of the storyline has become Elena- centric, when Alaric, the mayor and the council were in the picture it was more about the town. It was more like a web of stories and the characters seemed stronger playing off each other. Everyone is so one dimensional now. It's boring, I hope the Silas plan does work so the show can bring back some of the character that made the show work so well in the beginning.

Katherine really is clever.

Amusing scene between the brothers.

It’s really weird seeing Klaus in genuine pain. Okay, so Silas can look like anyone. I much prefer Candice Accola playing him over the guy who plays Shane.

“Okay, I don’t know if this is some new way of flirting, but it sucks.” Haha.

I love Rebekah but I prefer Katherine so I don’t like watching her get bullied. :(

Oh shit, Katherine and Elijah. And now Nina Dobrev really has kissed almost every damn guy on the show. And of course Elijah knows it’s Elena. :D

Lol @ the three of them “ewwing” at Katherine & Elijah.

“Oh my god, you do have a heart. Oh, my bad, it’s just a bloody rib.” Caroline again, lol.

“No Katherine-ing.” Lol.

“I saved your life. Twice.” “Because you put it in danger. Twice.” Yep.

I think everyone cheered when Katherine snapped Elena’s neck. :D

I’m surprised they thought that really was the cure. It’s Katherine, guys. She’s not going to hand over the cure that easily.

Poor Katherine. She really does care about certain people but it never works out because she puts herself as number one and they don’t trust her because of it. I mean, that’s fair enough, and it’s part of her charm, but she does actually have some feelings. :p That was definitely a different side to her.

“Complication speaking.” Lol.

Why don’t they just lock Elena in the cellar? :p They do it in other instances but when Elena says she’s going to start killing a bunch of people if they don’t stop trying to force the cure on her, they do nothing. Okay. :p

Are we certain there were no other doppelgangers in between that just managed to live normal lives/never ran into vampires? Not that it really makes any difference but since the Originals clearly lost track of Tatia's family line at some point before Katherine then surely there could have been multiple other ones pop up. Or even between Kat and Elena too - just some ordinary chick growing up in Bulgaria 100 years after Katherine or something.

A good thought, but you saw how everyone lined up when they heard about someone right around 5'7'' with brown hair. They were like, 'Ooh!! Klaus hates me!! I'll just bring him this girl!!' Klaus even sent Elijah to check if Elena was the real doppelganger in S2. I doubt that a doppelganger could get through life without being noticed by someone and reported to Klaus. Good thought, though!

Yeah, I agree. They searched for the doppelganger for over 500 years, I doubt they wouldn't check every female birth on the world until they found her.
