The Vampire Diaries "Bring It On" Review: 2-4-6-8, Who Do We Eviscerate?

The Vampire Diaries S04E16: "Bring It On"

When last we left our heroes, Elena Gilbert, a woman who has demonstrated time and again that she values nothing more highly than her family and her humanity, had incinerated the last vestiges of both. So what’s the next move for someone who’s become a cold, pitiless monster with no other drive but to devour weaker beings and sate the carnal desires of youth? Go out for cheerleading!

All throughout “Bring It On,” characters were insisting to one another that they should cut loose and have some fun after plowing through so much hardship recently, and the episode itself embraced that spirit. It hearkened back to the early, frothy days of The Vampire Diaries in many ways, from Elena replicating Damon’s "Human Speed Bump" trap to the high school existing only as a font of extracurricular activities to an act-long party scene crammed full of telegenic extras and red Solo cups. Cap it all off with an old-fashioned, vamp-on-vamp scrap in the woods and you’ve got an hour that set out to let its hair down and move past the grimness of the previous couple of installments.

Of course, all of those setpieces revolved around the fact that Off-Switch Elena is a stone-cold sadistic sociopath, but hey, 90210 this ain’t.

Even Elena rejoining the cheerleading squad signaled a reversion to an older version of herself. She may be attracted to it now because it gives her the opportunity to “throw people around”—more so than for anything approaching team spirit, let alone pep—but I still liked how it linked Evil Vampire Elena to Purehearted Human Elena. There’s a throughline to her identity, which grounds the tragic reality of what she’s become; this isn’t some demon in Elena’s clothing tearing girls’ throats out because they know how to accessorize. Importantly, it will also keep her from becoming a Katherine clone, and Nina Dobrev is fulfilling her end of the bargain by playing evil Elena with more of an bratty, icy insouciance as opposed to Katherine’s sinister playfulness.

Alas, Stefan and Caroline’s grand plan to re-establish some normalcy was thwarted. Drain one jugular and then casually allow a friend to suffer massive spinal contusions, and all of a sudden everyone’s on your case again. Try as they might to keep Elena out of trouble, she had barely emerged from her vervain nap before she pulled off a total end-run around them. Because keeping anyone of trouble is one thing nobody in Mystic Falls is very good at, at all, ever.

The party she finagled at the Salvatore abode even briefly did perennial worrywarts Stefan and Caroline a bit of good, which was nice to see. Stefan’s always more fun when he’s got a trusty blonde “sober buddy” to counter him. Elena picked up on that too, which raised the question: Was it jealousy that led her to storm off, and to later impale her best friend both physically and emotionally? And if she’s capable of jealousy (and, clearly, of enjoyment), is she capable of tapping other gut reactions, thus leaving open the possibility of re-flipping her switch whenever the writers decide to execute that particular plot device?

For now she’s still content with her easygoing nihilism, and she’s snared a veteran nihilist for an accomplice. She and Damon are road-tripping to the Big Apple, and probably not to take in a matinee of The Book of Mormon. Once again he’s on the fence between wanting to protect Elena from herself and wanting to say “fuck it ” and indulge in all the visceral pleasures of vampirehood he had so persuasively laid out to Rebekah.

Yet I doubt this is merely a pleasure cruise for him—he’s got a bead on Katherine, after running into (and immediately, if mercifully, dispatching) an old friend with ties to the city, and to her. If she’s in New York, then so is the cure. And if he can hit the town with a gorgeous and uninhibited partner before saving the day, well, such is the Tao of Damon. There’s no one better in the business at aligning the greater goal with his own desires.

NOTES & QUOTES

God bless Mystic Falls High and its lack of any semblance of authority to notice students who only show up like five times a semester. The policy toward unexcused absences is so lenient it makes a Montessori school look like a military academy.

– Meanwhile, Klaus and Hayley were off cobbling together a backdoor pilot for The Originals. Oh, there are all new mysteries to be explored in New Orleans? YOU DON’T SAY.

– The hybrid and the lycanthrope did bring plenty of heat, though. Between their burgeoning alliance/seduction/head games and Elena taking every opportunity to strip down, this was one of the more overtly sexually charged TVD episodes we've had in a while—again trying to inject some welcome fun back into the show after a weighty few weeks.

– As Elena settles in with the Salvatores, Matt became the proud new owner of Lockwood Manor. You get a mansion! And you get a mansion! Everybody gets a mansion!

– Stefan feels guilty for Elena’s condition, because Stefan.

– “I can’t believe you’re making me say this: Show a little restraint.”

– “I just came up with a list. It’s called Things You Suck At.”

– “I thought you were still vacationing on Numbskull Island.” Ian Somerhalder has a knack for making even the flimsiest snark lines sing.

– “That does explain your charming bravado. Abandonment issues will do it every time.”

– “I dunno. Maybe this is a better version of me.”

– “You’re like Sherlock Holmes with brain damage.”

– “Painting is a metaphor for control... Art taught me that one’s vision can be achieved with sheer force of will.”

– “Or Damon will come home and kill everyone.”

– “I admit, under any other circumstances, this would be a major turn-on.” Co-sign.

– “I’m not big on goal-setting, but let’s imagine a time when you don’t want to kill your best friend.”

I really hope the Originals doesn't become about Klaus hunting down all the people that helped Katherine, that would get boring. I want to pull away from the whole revenge obsession the characters have on this show. Don't get me wrong I'm a vengeful person, but if you are gonna live forever might want to learn to let the little things go.

Ok so I don't really have much to say about this other than I don't care how much "training" Elena had with Alaric, if Caroline really wanted to hurt her she could, Caroline his kicked Damon's ass she can certainly beat up Elena. I do like evil Elena it is fun to watch but it won't be for long, cause like in every other situation like the whole sire bond thing, every other character is going to spend all their time talking and worrying about Elena rather than actually contributing to their own plot. It is going to get old fast.

This show should be renamed 'The Vampire Douchebags' I mean has anyone of Matt's so-called friends even bothered to ask if he is ok? His (new) best friend Jeremy is dead. His sister is dead. His (previous) best friend has left town. BOTH his ex-grilfriends are now vampire and have moved on to other relationships whilst he is single. Granted Tyler did leave him a mansion but he only did that because he wants Caroline to move on with her life and be happy. Plus which I don't think that giving a MANSION to someone as lonely and friendless as Matt is really a good idea. Talk about rubbing someone's face in it!

Maybe I'm missing something but can't Klaus just compel Hayley to tell him everything she knows about Katherine? BTW - do you think that Hayley and Klaus were fantasizing about Caroline and Tyler whilst they were 'schtupping' on the table?

I know it's twisted but for the first time ever I find myself starting to like Elena - with lines like "your whole world revolves around me" and the fact that she isn't whining all the time, she is much more fun. I hope they keep her like this for a while

I know that Elena's classmates are a bit dense and possibly very self-absorbed but I'm surprised that they didn't wonder why she was throwing parties instead of grieving over the loss of her last living relative..... :-)

I thought I would hate emotion-less Elena because I always hated Katherine (especially after killing Jeremy...) but... I actually found her pretty cool. She wasn't another Katherine, she's just... Elena.... the whole character's pretty interesting because we all know Elena as the over-emotional vampire wreck she's been lately (being a vampire and all...) And now it's just very interesting to see the character stripped of her main feature and watch her react to everything in a new light.
Also, Delena bitches.

How come when Rebekah told Damon she saw Shane's dead body he didn't catch that Shane is DEAD and whoever came with Bonnie wasn't the real Shane?!! It's weird how they ignored that

Yeah, I totally forgot about mentioning this here. That was a huge miss considering Damon's full time job is like what? 1. Survival 2. Vampire Detective

I also enjoy the new Elena, she's different to Katherine yet different to her older self. I hope they continue to develop her character in a new way, preferably mix it up a little like I don't know LOOK FOR A GUY THAT ISN'T A SALVATORE FOR A CHANGE. :P

Ughh Evil Elena is a bore! Who would have thought it. It really annoys me that Evil Elena is practically Katherine except without all the good bits...! I have to admit I enjoyed the "Nothing you all haven't seen before" bit though!
Not really sure where they are going with this whole Silas thing, but I said that with Klaus and now he is one of my favourite characters and the show couldn't work without him.
I'm not a big fan of the Haley subplot though...I find her a bit dull as a character, love Phoebe Tonkin though.
I liked the theme of the episode, "Bring it on", it was good that they added that element of fun back into The Vampire Diaries, something that has seriously been lacking, but I would have liked to have seen a lot more Damon one-liners with all this partying going on!
Don't know if anyone agrees!

The episode was fun with so much happening, i was the disappointed that the Silas plot was completely ignored this week but it was still enjoyable episode. I prefer the new Elena as she is straightforward and does not mope around and whine all the time. I know the show aint all about the romantic aspect but Stefan/Caroline can be explored considering they all single and have great chemistry.

While nothing at all happened, this was a fun episode to watch. I mean, from episodes 11-15, everything was so grim that I just feel like this little break is actually okay before it starts again (because, believe me, it will). It was a fun hour while a lot of hot moments and funny lines. I don't really like to talk about shippers because I think romance is fairly the worst part of this show and even thought I'm a Stelena fan, I'm cool if they don't end up together, because I'm honestly not too hyped-up with this part of the show. And even though I'm supposed to hate Delena and stuff, I don't. And I'm actually resigned: I think Damon and Elena are end game. I don't know if it's just me or if it actually was a foreshadowing, but I think Tyler's going to die real soon: it's a sweet way for the writers to end this Klaroline stuff, leave Caroline single and give Klaus an excuse to finally leave Mystic Falls: Caroline's hate. Also a good opportunity for Stefan to sweep in and comfort her in such a desperate time, building them as a couple slowly throughout season 5.

I can't believe I'm saying this but I think bratty-no-emotions Elena is actually MORE irritating than both human-damsel-in-distress Elena AND Oh-my-god-I'm-a-vampire-I-might-kill-someone-PANIC Elena. Or maybe that just means that no matter what she does Elena is the biggest pain in the ass that TVerse has ever seen.

My only concern is reverting back to emotional Elena and having to deal with regret and guilt. That will be a hundred times worse.

Oh jesus you're right. Full-of-regret-and-guilt Elena will be a bigger pain in the ass than hemorrhoids.

I didn't enjoy Elena as much as others did in this episode. Although I appreciate the show trying to go back to its high school roots (although at this point, why bother), Elena flips her switch and she joins the cheerleaders and walks around naked? They could have been a little more creative with Elena's choices. Even though they did reveal she was manipulating them, I would rather they be more straightforward with Elena's deliberate choices. It would help us settle into this personality of hers... We're essentially meeting a new character, except it feels like they're still trying to keep old Elena in their back pocket for safe keeping. Let go!

And poor Matt... He's never going to be able to pay taxes on that mansion with his paycheck from the Grill.

I am not liking Elena as a vampire, but the show is still one of my favorites!

I love how technically nothing of real substance plot-wise actually happened int his episode and yet it was most enjoyable because it was so bloody fun!
-I love Elena. Evilena. She's fun. I mean, I know people are comparing her to Katherine, but she isn't giving me Katherine vibes. She's more like Season 1 Damon with lady parts. I kinda love it. Plus it's kind of fitting since the sire bond is no more, but she's still connected to Damon in a way. I also love how Damon is torn between parenting her and just having fun with her. He seems both apprehensive and yet amused by her antics. As am I Damon, as am I.
-I know Caroline is like the show's sweetheart and all that good stuff, but I can't lie, I loved the hell out of any and every scene involving Elena being all mean girl with her. It was awesome. Caroline had it coming. I mean when she wasn't being Stefan's bestie and Klaus' muse she's just sort of sucked. Hard. She's been very annoying this season, and watching Elena screw with her was golden. more of that, please. I actually giggled when she dropped her on the ground, and how awesome was it when she kicked her ass and cited that it was in part due to Alaric's vampire slaying skills? That was all kind of awesome. Sorry Care Bear.
-I like Steroline, because they are like really cool besties. I hate that it tends to be at the expense of Caroline being Elena's friend, but I still ove them. I didn't even mind the shipper vibes in this episode for them, because for the longest they seem like they actually made sense. Caroline and Stefan. Stefan and Bonnie. Always made sense to me. I mean Stefan actually smiled for a change, and danced and had fun with the resident vamp blond, and if she does that for him, than more of that please. I love Stefan to pieces, in part because out of all of them, I'd probably be most similar minus the serial killing and brooding, but I love it when he can do more than be a pain in the arse. I mean it speaks volumes when even Paul Wesley is annoyed with his character at times. LOL! I will say it was funny watching Stefan play dad to Elena, and failing, miserably.
-Matt isn't homeless anymore! Tatoes is moving on up! A freaking mansion! I wonders how he is going to maintain that thing though. He needs a few roommates because that is going to get plenty expensive. Maybe Bonnie can move in. Or he can turn it into a place for all the orphans of MF which is pretty much the rest of the Senior class...I mean those who aren't already dead that is. I love how of all the inconsistencies and little nitpicky things one can bring up in this show, vampire entrance comes down to a legal binding document.
-Speaking of Bonnie, I kinda missed her. I mean she's sort of crazy now, which means she has been infinitely more interesting than she has been previous episodes. I love that they referenced her. No one has checked in on her, which is no surprise since they never do, but yeah.
-Umm, so how come no one told me that Klaus was looking for a bed mate? I volunteer as tribute dammit!!! I guess that's okay though. I mean I'm an Elijah fangirl first and foremost. Yeah, but about that. Was it kinda hot? Sure. Was I happy to see that Klaus finally got laid? Sure. I mean as far as we know he hasn't gotten any since that time he was sleeping with that Gretchen witch while he was still in Alaric's body...does that count? Whateves, maybe he picked up some no name chicas along the way and they never felt compelled to show us. But, if I finally got to see shirtless Klaus having sexytimes with someone, I'd have rather it been a no name person. Haley? I know Phoebe T is like a treasure and all, but I'm sorry, Hayley's character is pretty boring. I didn't mind watching them fling witty banter back and forth, or her criticize his emo art, or even them sharing lavish dinners together while JoMo did that smize thing...whatever, but the "We're effed because we're in love with people who don't love us hate sex" just didn't do it for me at all. I'm still trying to figure out how Hayley is going to be a remotely interesting character in The Originals. I don't care about her family, and this was contrived, them thrust together to give us more tidbits on the upcoming NOLA episode and spinoff. I wasn't remotely interested. Plus while they had some awesomely tense standoff moments the last time she was loitering around, they lacked chemistry. Which is insane, because JoMo can have chemistry with a gnat.

I LOVED this episode, like really loved it! I just really like the concept of Elena as a bit of a bad girl. Through the whole show I know Elena's humanity and caring is like a big deal, but she is also such a whiny, miserable, goodie to shoes who doesn't have any fun and probably goes around worrying that if she smiles, her face might crack..Something that I have to say i have found both tiring and a little boring at times.

With this whole new side to Elena, maybe she will become a bit more of an interesting character to watch? I surely did enjoy her this way and I really do hope that they keep her like this for a while and explore this so called "bad" Elena a little more before taming her back to normal The thing with this show is that they make out that being a vamp is such a horrible miserable time and being human is so much better..Im not sure I agree, sure the killing part sux, but they can go out during the day, they are young forever, strong, fast and sort of invincible, so realistically, I think they should go all out and let her enjoy all these new fun sides of being a vamp to :)

Also..love triangle..please do not go back to Stefan, that guy is sooo boring when they are together that it feels like time stands still, at least with Damon there is excitement or bring in someone new?

I really Loved this episode, so here is to me begging the TV gods to keep up the excellence!

Okay maybe this has already been said but I don't have the time to read through all the comments. Anyway..

Prediction: Stefan will be Elena's way back to her humanity, they will fall in love and be boring again and Damon will be sad and lonley. Again.

UUuggghhhh okay, I know Damon and Elena won't last forever and I know Damon is better of without her but does she have to be with Stefan? Stefan is kinda cool now (not in this ep though...) and I like that. Please writers if you have to put these two toghether, make them fun and interesting if that is even possible! Kthnxbye

If these people ever get back together again, i quit the show. I know in the books Stefan ends up with her but the tv show is vastly different from it and i hope they keep away from that event as well. Stefan is ok, and as you said he's also extremely boring. And i think he's part of the reason why it took me awhile to finally invest in this show, but Damon's relationship with elena is definitely what reeled me in.

Okay PLEASE warn me next time before you're going to spoil the books. I haven't read them just b/c I don't want to know how how it ends. I know the show differs from the books but they do take some events from the books anyway (ex. they way elena became a vampire and so on).

Rant over. That they end up together is fine by me (ok not really I will always be a sucker for delena) because then the show is over anyway and I don't have to watch them on my tv. I mean if you think about it, they are actually kinda cute together and really they make more sense then delena but as we both know, they are SO boring... Not very passionate or dramatic or anything, just cute, happy and boring to watch.

I'm probably the only one that secretly wanted Elena to kill Caroline.
And I don't mind this Elena, while she did seem bratty you have to take in to consideration that everyone was treating still like a fragile baby that they want to control. She turned off her humanity not her brain, she's still capable of making some decisions for her self. I'm excited to see her with Damon who knows how to handle the off switch better.
As far as Klaus and Hayley. I'm probably one of the few people that likes her. I doubt the sex was out of anything besides them realizing they don't hate/annoy each other and were lonely because they're both in love with people they can't have and have some similarities.
This was one of the instances I was bored by Rebecca, but I think what Damon said to her about being ordinary might stick. So please give her something to do besides search for the cure.
This episode was just okay for me, I really wish they'd just take them out of high school already, seriously are we just to assume that they compelled all the teachers and adults and stuff to give them passing grades and ignore the fact that Elena's entire family died in the last 3yrs or so?

This version of Elena is so much better! I like her, that little spitfire! Also, Damon and Elena are just awesome together! I love seeing them together!

I think Stefan and Caroline are a good couple. I also think that Elena, I hope, will want to go after Katherine and kill her for getting her brother killed. That'd be awesome Elena killing Katherine :)

I like the idea of Stefan and Caroline too, but when I say this, all I hear is, "What about Tyler and Claus?" I liked the way Stefan helped Caroline when she first turned in the second season and I wanted them to have a chance then. I say, go with it! Stefan and Elena should be over!

You know, I just wonder what possessed the writers to dump all this BS on us. The cure? Understandable. It was in the books, and a believable development. Delena? Had to happen eventually. Sire bond? The books. Silas? We needed another villain.
But this episode was the pinacle of all the total and utter crap that we have had forced on us this season. The Originals sounded good at first glance, but then they decide to put Hayley on it? Bad move. But I could have moved on. I hated her. Whatever. But when the writers literally just shove all this s*** into our already nose-diving show just for the sake of a possible spinoff, a completely different show, then I'm pissed. Sex? REALLY? Of all the impossibly STUPID choices that Julie and her league of irritating writers could have made, having one of the best or at least very-well-liked characters bone the worst character on the show was the worst. Are you SERIOUS? This isn't "pretty good" or likeable or even believable. This isn't a matter of this being better than the nearly nonexistent Klaroline. This is just sucky. This isn't the only problem I had with this episode, but I have never been so annoyed, furious, or dumbstruck because of a bad choice on TVD, and I have never hated a character so much. This isn't about me wanting Klaus with someone else. This is all about Hayley and writers ignoring what was good for the show and doing what was good for them, so they could have some other show not all of us even wanted.

I think that Nina did a really good job portraying Emotionless Elena. After last episode I was expecting to see something like Katherine 2.0, but while Katherine is all fun and kick-ass, Elena got her "I don't care" attitude and I really appreciate showing the difference between them. Maybe some of her actions were quite stupid ("I want your ribbon!"), but she had a couple of good moments as well (pointing out how Stefan's world revolves all around her or lines about underage drinking and dirty thoughts about Klaus). It's interesting to explore this new side of her, though I don't think it will last forever (I'm wondering how do they plan to bring her back? Trying that damn cure again?). And one definitely good thing about this situation - we finally got rid of the sire bond, yay.
It was nice to see Caroline&Stefan not being annoying together. Their whining about how Elena doesn't love Stefan anymore was a bit irritating to me, and now for a change they have something to really worry about. And they even brought some fun part on, how cool and cute was it when Stefan grabbed her at the party? That being said, I need to add that I like them just the way they are, as friends. Caroline should stay free for some Klaroline action! And poor girl, now she was the one in denial - it was obvious that Tyler is gone forever, at least as long as Klaus stays in the picture. Her desperate phone calls maybe were pointless, but it was also kinda sweet and sad at the same time. Besides, it was getting to be quite an interesting way of summing up events in Mystic Falls every time something happened.
I'm wondering what exactly is Damon's agenda right now. He decided to head to NY after meeting this Will guy, what makes me think that it might have something to do with search for Katherine. And the cure, blah. And maybe trying to bring Elena back - as human. On the other hand, everyone, even Elena herself, are brainwashing him into thinking he should enjoy this situation, because Human Elena (or maybe even Elena With Feelings) would rush back to Stefan. But is that really what he could want for himself? Emotionless Elena may be more fun, but she cannot love him since technically she is not capable of love. And all he ever wanted was for her to have real feelings for him.
And finally my Klaus&Hayley rant, because, of course, I hated that idea. It seemed so wrong on so many levels... First of all: okay, Klaus is thousand-year-old super powerful hybrid and from all we know about vampires on this show, he should enjoy having fun and hooking up with any girl he wants. And yet... he didn't seem interested in having carefree sex this past one-and-a -half season we know him. He fell for Caroline and it seemed so... pure, like he really wanted her to love him back and do things properly. And he is still in love with her and it doesn't stop him from going to bed with some random girl he doesn't even like. It could be perfectly okay for a vampire on this show to do that, but we just never saw Klaus like that and that's why it surprised me so much. Secondly, it did hurt to see him use exactly the same tricks he applied for Caroline: showing girl his art, calling her "love"... While it seemed all very real and important back then, now it's... I don't know, he isn't interested in Hayley the romantic way, so why would he need to charm her like that? Ah, right, her Very Important Information about Katerina... Seriously? Why would she actually have some of these? They paired up recently just to handle this cure thing and now Katherine, of course, isn't even interested in her anymore. She's not that stupid to share important things with random people and I doubt that Hayley had enough time with her to notice much herself. And again, even if she does know something, why would Klaus we know bother charming her into slowly spilling something out instead using some quick and effective torture? Remember, it's the very person who destroyed his beloved dream of hybrids army. He has no reason to go with her the nice way. I really love Klaus, he's the best, and Hayley... I'm quite tolerant when it comes to fictional characters, so I don't hate her that much, but I definitely don't find her to be someone to root for, at least not as a person of interest for The Awesome Klaus. I did like Phoebe as Faye in TSC, she was a great character, but she's not half that cool here. And if that's the route they're taking for The Originals - well, I just lost like half of my enthusiasm for that production. They're not good together. Klaroline is so much better.
One good thing about their sex scene? The song that played at that time. It could make a really awesome moment, just... not with Hayley.
And when will Elijah be back? I keep waiting!

Ok so I don't actually understand why klaus would wine and dine Hayley after the hybrid business and have sex with her and still get no useful information whatsoever. His usual method is to torture and threaten and this would have worked much better on Hayley. He's not the patient type to sit and wait for someone to possibly tell him something useful when they've finished with their over the top sassing everything in sight. The more I think about it the less sense it makes. It's not like she means anything to him.

The awful sex decisions made in this ep also known as the biggest anticlimax ever can only be redeemed if he gets bored and tortures her in the next episode. And omg if Caroline finds out and it jeopardises Klaroline sex I will be so mad. Hayley has no place on the originals. Ugghh I'd rather have seen him kiss bonnie and that's saying something

so here is my problem with TVD,... What are vampires ?
are vampires the hunter and us humans the prey ? or are they more evolved than us and upper in the food chain and evolutionary road?
why this matter has bothered me more this last episode is the constant reference to the emotion switch as the '' human switch ''
It would make more sense to me if vampires have actually evolved more than us ,... so the emotions of guilt or sadness were put aside as being useless and joy was kept,... but are these emotions useless ? I wished TVD could have cleared that up for me ,...
I think true blood writers have a better sense and understanding of what vampires are ,...

Didn't they establish somewhere in season two that there was no switch? That it was mostly just about pretending and lying to yourself?

they can't be the higher-ups because they can't procreate.
Reply

They "procreate" by changing others, at least, in the Anne Rice/True Blood sense of it, which would be technically a more efficient method of procreation than sexual reproduction. Vampirism is a new life, so changing someone is akin to giving them "life" as they're "born again".

All emotions are useful for survival. Evolution can't be blamed for the nonsense that is "turning off your humanity". I'd say that what they were going for was to say that she switched off her super-ego, or something.
Reply

yea but the only thing about that is that eventually you run out of people to turn and when they kill each other off the population gets smaller and smaller until there is only a few and that's not a really effective means of procreation

Ugh, nah, the only good moment in this episode was Stefan taking Caroline over to the dancefloor - you never see it coming when Stefan decides to have fun....as for everything else, Nina Dobrev's portrayal of Evil Elena is basically Katherine minus the sexy attitude, good clothing and wit. Still hobo fashion style and dull Elena eyes. Good luck to Matt with keeping up that mansion, and yeah LOL next week Elena is getting all crazy in NY because she got dye. This show...

Yeah, I was thinking about that too. How come everyone just forgot about Silas just b/c Elena became a brat (an awesome one brat though)? Wasn't he like the one who were supposed to release "hell on earth"? Okay I actually don't really give a shit about SIlas, he seems like a crappy villain. But they should still care more about what happened to this guy.

It was freaking time, that Elena changed in to this bad ass vampire like Damon was in Season 1, when things were exciting and suprising...it felt like that this episode..waiting to see what Elena is going to do next to annoy her other vampire friends...
Loved the fight between Elena and Caroline...was nice to see them fight for the change...
Stefan was so boring and annoying this episode...It is all my fault crap again.....
Damon seemed a bit lost this episode...he was all over the place, but not actually doing something important...! Now he is going to make Elena, Katherine by taking her to New York and have vampire fun.....
To be honest, the whole Klaus/ Haley part didn't interested att all...was checking my iphone..at that moment...!!!

Ok so the dirty thoughts line at Caroline is giving me some hope that klaroline sex is still on the cards. Especially since the Hayley fiasco just tainted what I have been waiting to see since that perfect man stepped onto my screen. I swear I was ignoring Hayley so bad during 'that' scene. And the tattoos make me laugh, mainly cos he didn't have them when he woke up in the forest talking to elijah after wolfing out. What did he go to a tattoo parlour drunk after killing carol and ask for a triangle?

Haha, Klaus wandering into a tatoo parlour drunk, love it. :)

Ha, I like how you have closely examined the only other shirtless Klaus scene we've ever had. I'm pretty familiar with that scene myself :)

But yes, I'm holding onto hope that klaroline sex is still an option. Because otherwise there ain't much reason to keep watching this show. So tired of the main love triangle, Bonnie is boring, and the writers have made Caroline either judgy-whiny this season or else everyone's punching bag.

Yeah, after last month's incredible episode, this one was kind of a let down. But then again, what do you expect when the title is a reference to the most overrated cheerleading movie ever?

OMG I JUST HAD AN IDEA!!!!! For all those Klaroline fans out there:

Klaus needed information from Hayley, right? What if he only slept with her for that?? Seriously, hear me out. It felt forced, which would make sense if Klaus just wasn't good at pretending to be totally into someone because in the back of his head, he felt back because Caroline. They had no chemistry because it will NOT be a permanent thing. Klaus just slept with her for information.

So my prediction is that Klaus only slept with Hayley for information on 'Katerina.'

It even matches his personality! Manipulating, controlling, and very much in love with Caroline.

Do you think I'm right? Way off the mark? Give me your opinions!

Same witch-burning rules apply.

See, the thing is, it would have been more "in character" for him to torture the info out of her, or threaten her/Tyler's life. Seriously, banging it out of her? Neh.

I think sex was just something for them to do because they are lonely and in love with people that can't have. Klaus could manipulate her in a number of ways that aren't romantic.
He doesn't need to sleep with her for information, Hayley isn't that vulnerable and trusting. That's everyones move on Rebbeca sadly. They were just lonely, and he likes her enough to not kill her and torture her but that's it. If anything she was trying to manipulate him so that she'd get something out of helping him with Katherine like Tylers saftey.

I do think that's why he did it, for the information - plus he's bored, hasn't been laid in like at least a year (that we know of), and he wanted a distraction from his Caroline rejection.

I would have MUCH preferred a good old-fashioned torture scene instead of that travesty, though.

Character development for Elena? Gasp.... about freaking time!

"You're using your body to get to me, Katherine used to do that."
BEST FREAKING COMPLEMENT EVER!!!! The fact that Elena is becoming like Katherine is a good thing, just as long as she does her own thing too. Although the idea of two Katherines... yeah, okay you win.. just be exactly like Katherine.

"Stefan feels guilty for Elena’s condition, because Stefan" -yep sums it up.
Stefan makes it all about him self, just kind of like how Elena does.

Meanwhile- Bonnie was running around from town to town wearing a ski mask, stealing all the blood, although I doubt her frail little body could carry much... whilst screaming from the top of the roof-tops "I see dead people!" .. and I've lost my mind!!!!... and my love interest!.... "

Then Damon and Elena rode of into the moonlight together in his sexy car. The End.
lol I think Damon is the perfect person to help Elena through.. this new phase in her life. I actually liked the ending of this one.

The rest of it though... pretty much snooze-ville. Klaus and Hayley? snore. Her character sucks.

Oh, maybe Bonnie will go gay with April?

And does no one even care about Silas? He killed Jeremy, but they're all acting like he doesn't even exist?

Lastly, as a Psych major I feel like I fail at life for not understanding why Elena crumpled up Jer's remembence ceremony thing. Or maybe I'm trying to read in to it too much.. idk... what are everyone else's thoughts on that scene?

I completely 100% agree. and YES Damon and Elena are meant for each other. did you see those eyes she was giving him standing in the bedroom. She still wants him hardcore, and now he doesn't have to feel guilty, because no sire bond. and she even admitted she wanted him all along but was too afraid to say it because he was the "bad guy" and she didn't want to hurt stefans feelings.

I couldn't disagree more. They have turned Elena into a cold blood monster. There's no humanity left in her. How is that relatable? How is that any character development? : ( : (

Elena and Damon truly deserve each other now. I guess this is the only way to make them work. =.=

Oh you mean the way Damon has grown in the course of 4 seasons now? He is still the same monster as before, even worse now he has manipulated Elena into turning off her humanity. Let's not forget that Damon used to force Karoline into having sex with him. In a way he raped her...he has done the same thing to Elena.

Okay, so WTF IS UP WITH THIS REVIEW???? NO mention of Klaus or his terrible shirtless-hug choices. And I liked you, Andy. Shame.

Anyway. Notes n' Quotes:
1. Well, West Point this isn't. I'll give you that.
2. No, this does not count as a Klaus-mention. Still mad about that.
3. Elena's the worst. That's all I have to say.
4. LOLZ. It's like that new thing for kids: Everyone gets a trophy. BTW I can rant about this abomination for hours, but I'm not going to.
5. Ugh, Stefan. Go jump in a volcano.
6. Hey bro! What happened to Damon Logic? Is that not a thing anymore? Oh well.
7. LOLZ. Love that quote.
8. Might have to use that one at some point. Hey where's my sister?? Oh yeah, Numbskull Island. Right.
9. Aww, poor Klaus. (This was about Klaus right. Of course it was. Silly me, everything's about Klaus.)
10. Way better. You go girl.
11. :)
12. Team Klaus.
13. Or that. (I was secretly hoping for that).
14. I'll rant about this later.
15. That's a good goal, actually. I approve.

Okay, into my part of this thing.

SOLID EPISODE. Seriously, it had all good things! Klaus shirtless, girl fights, Damon being sassy, a certain incompetent sheriff, parties, shirtless hugs, murder, werewolf hickeys, old besties, hospitals, blood, cheerleading, lonely phone-calls, mashed potatoes, bourbon, Tyler saying he’ll never come back (FINALLY), New York, underage drinking going unnoticed by said incompetent sheriff, and SO MUCH DRINKING. Elena even told Stefan how much of a Elena-Centered freak he is. However, there are a few things I can (and will) complain about.

1. WTF writers. Klaus and HAYLEY???? Hate. Hate hate hate hate. DID I MENTION I HATE THIS SO MUCH?!?!?!?!
2. Caroline needs to stop being pathetic and accept that Joseph Morgan is hot and if she doesn’t screw him other people (lame, boring people like Hayley) will.
3. Elena acted like a teen the entire episode. And yeah, she is, but she was ignoring the authority figure (Stefan) and texting all her besties to go drink at her house. Which isn’t actually her house at all, being that her deed is now completely void apparently? Because she died or something. I don’t pretend to understand life anymore. Much less this show. LOLZ, I just remembered she even got grounded. Haha. Also she was this bratty little kid in the beginning, ‘I want it.’ Ugh. The worst. Also she acted like S1 Damon, aka dickish. That first scene was such a callback. Reminded me of the pain of S1. *Shudder*
4. Caroline also needs to learn to fight. Take a class or something. Hell, she should make a trip to the Lakeside House of JerHulk Buff-ness. I bet Klaus would give her a lesson or two!
5. Hayley totally dissed all of Klaus’s artwork so much. (BTW When she said, ‘don’t get this one’ was anyone else thinking about the snowflake picture?? I WAS.) And he STILL slept with her. HATE HATE HATE HATE.
6. On a scale from one to ten, this episode would get a solid fifteen if not for the Klaus/Hayley sex thing. THE WORST. I swear, if Hayley’s Klaus’s romantic interest on The Originals, I will go shoot somebody. (Kidding, but I WILL be really mad.) PLEASE DO NOT DO THIS WRITERS. EVERYONE WILL HATE YOU. Seriously, read some comments on this site or something.
7. Still no Elijah. Are my hopes for a Kalijah shirtless scene dead now? (Pls say no, pls say no.)
8. Does Klaus have the smallest bed on the show? Seriously? Someone please verify this for me, ‘cause his bed looked super small. (PS Have we seen Klaus’s bedroom before??)
9. Would’ve liked Katherine in this episode, but it did alright with humanity-less Elena. Katherine could’ve come in to beat some sense into her though.
10. Elena dropped Caroline. And then tried to JOKE about it! Pissed, guys.

Other than that, I think it was a solid episode. Not the best, but not the worst. Hate the Klaus and Hayley stuff so much. Can’t even tell you.

Some stuff I was pleased with though! I’ve made a list.

1. Elena’s new self. MUCH IMPROVED. I approve this, writers. Don’t change her again ever. Please.
2. Tyler not being in it. Also approved. Tyler should go jump in a volcano. Are there volcanoes near where he is? I’m guessing he’s probably chilling drinking umbrella-drinks in Hawaii so probably yes. Use the local hot spot.
3. Bonnie wasn’t in it either. That’s good, because even though she’s kinda evil now, still doesn’t do it for me. She needs to be gone forever. Hey! Why doesn’t she just join that volcano party with Tyler?!
4. April . . . ugh, where’d that volcano go??
5. That Silas was confirmed as a vampire (I think). Really wish he was in this one though. And not Shane-Silas. I want to see the uber-talented hunky actor who plays this guy.
6. Damon being sassy. I know I mentioned this above, but I have to put this quote here. ‘Under different circumstances this would totally turn me on.’ Wow Damon. Just wow.
7. The title of this episode reminded me of the Bing commercials. You know the ones. The Bing It On Challenge. LOL.
8. Matt WAS in this episode. Go Mashed Potatoes!!
9. In the next episode says there will be 70’s flashbacks. Score. Can’t wait for Damon’s hair.
10. The episode after next is the 18th. American Gothic I believe. According to an interview with my personal idol Joseph Morgan (chill, Mel Brooks and Peter Dinklage, it’s a tie still) he said that ‘Klaroline fans will be upset with episode 16 (WHICH WE WERE) but happy with episdoe 18.’ Probably not the exact words, but close enough. Can’t wait.
11. Klaus shirtless. Even if it was with Hayley, this still gave me some good eye-candy to get me through the week. Bravo, writers. For the second time ever, Klaus gets a shirtless scene. But still. Hayley? Seriously? Okay, this is the ‘good things’ list, I know. *Deep breath*. Relax, Inigo. Okay I’m good. Continuing.
12. That right now there are 12 of these comments and only 10 of the negative ones.
13. Uh, applesauce? Running out of things to say.
14. OH YEAH!! Sheriff Forbes was back and as incompetent as ever. At least she KNEW about the party. Even if she didn’t really do anything about it.

‘What is this?’ - Liz, who clearly was never in High School.

‘Oh, you know, just some under-age drinking. Join the party?’ - Elena, who isn’t going to graduate. Ever.

15. Definitely applesauce.
16. When Damon grabbed the bottle of bourbon from the jock, and the jock was like, ‘WTF Bro??’ and then like two seconds later he was like, ‘Whatevs.’ How stoned was the jock? Really stoned or just mostly? We’re betting on the number of brownies here.
17. That Damon’s friend Will had the worst last day ever. He got a huge werewolf hickey and got his heart ripped out by his bestie. Hurtful, Damon. The only good part of his day was that he got to meet Joseph Morgan. Right before he got his throat ripped half-way out. Bummer.
18. That everyone is still forgetting the one important rule in life: DON’T BE AN ASSHOLE. Personally I find this hilarious. Don’t judge me.
19. That I’m really really close to twenty on these.
20. OMG 20!!!!
21. And now we can all grab a glass of bourbon, ‘cause we’re at the legal drinking age for the US!! And that’s where I happen to be at the moment. Somebody find that jock and get him to put down the brownies and give me a bottle!!

Okay, also, how hilarious was it when Elena ripped all the flyers off the board? Relax, Elena. You may be a murderer, but still. Just cool it.

Okay. Some good things, some (WTF KLAUS?????) bad things, but a solid episode definitely. Other than that Klaus makes the worst shirtless-hugging choices EVER. Ugh. Hated that so much, guys.

Okay, just fill in below. You guys know my rules by now. :)

I didn't like the episode or Elena, but the sex was forced and Debekah was boring. One episode every... season... is enough. AND I MISSED BONNIE, TOO, WOW.

I think a good episode is one that can get a lot of people interested and keep the plot moving. Plus, for TVD especially, one that has at least a few more emotional scenes, which is ironic considering the main character got her emotions turned off. I guess Elena taking a dive will hurt the show more than we think.

The episode was dull, the characters were blah, and the plot didn't really move at all except for Silas stealing blood, but we already knew he was in Mystic Falls, so it wasn't some big reveal. Plus, even in a town where it goes around like the flu, sex is sorta sacred, so tossing it in just as a means of finding a way onto The Originals is a really bad way to go. And the only emotional scenes were Matt and Caroline, and I don't even ship Forwood and that made me incredibly sad. Highlight of the night: a minute-and-a-half long scene. Ugh.

I love Bitchy Off Switch Elena, much more fun for everyone! And Nina Dobrev does an AMAZING job playing her so different than Bitchy Katherine, and Normal Elena and every state of mind her two characters have ever played. Now, I've noticed that jelously part too, and I think that will be exactly how she turns the switch back on: her feelings for Stefan. Btw, I love that Caroline has dirty thoughts about Klaus. Oh, and I don't think that Elena was jealous that Stefan was flirting with Caroline. I think she was pissed that Elena tried to tell little-baby-child-Elena what to do, and she was striking back. If Normal Elena had accepted Stebekah (ew) enough not to do anything, then she would try and kill Forbes over the slightest friendly flirting between Steroline.

You forgot these two: Damon: "I'm really not in the mood to Scooby Doo our way into the case of the stolen blood supply" and " It's not me, it's you".

I think the road trip is a great idea, especially since I believe that Damon's agenda revolves not only around finding Katherine and the oh so overrated cure, but also around the fact that he took a page out of his "101 ways to put someone out of their misery" code of conduct book and killed his "buddy"; so once again he has lost someone he was close to and surprise surprise, they had met in NYC. So that is another angle to the road trip to the big apple.

Also, in my opinion teenage Elena, which she has now become like many other non supernatural girls that age we know so well and don't love, started the I'm coming after you blondie rampage based on the fact that Caroline was judgmental about everything Elena had become and even when the switch was on, she had been on Elena's nerves, let alone now that she supposedly has no feeling of remorse for everything she does.

She is not on Stefan's case because Stefan, other than a few unsuccessful lectures here and there, has not prohibited Elena from letting loose a little bit. Nina Dobrev gets all the credit for now playing 3 different characters especially since she convinced us all that Elena had not become Katherine 2.0.

Back door pilot aside, I think the episode was a success and way to go Tyler, best move ever to leave the mansion to Matt. You are truly Mystic falls' local Oprah.

Thank you for the review.

I want to see Tatia! I think Elijah is Tatia's baby daddy, and maybe that's why he cares so much about the doppelgangers and he's always so willing to help them. Also, I didn't know that turning off your humanity turns you into a RAGING BITCH. At least Katherine is sassy while being sociopathic. Elena just seems like a complete douchebag. "I like your ribbion." "I WANT IT." Urgh.

Is Elena going to be the only boring vampire in this show?

For a long time I have been cheering for Vampire Elena, specially because Human Elena bored me to death.

However with half of the season gone, my hopes went down again last night. Elena was basically the worst version of herself ( do vampires have PMS?). Even when she was acting like a bitch, she was moody and boring. At least Katherine has always been a cheeky bit#@, and that's what made her awesome.

Changing subjects... I'm so not into the Klaus-Hayley affair. Not only because I like him better with Caroline, but because it was thrown down our throats just because both are going to be in "The Originals". There was no reason for Hayley to be back in the Vampire Diaries so it looked like a commercial ( " Next on the Originals...).

Last night was also the night of What happened to...Bonnie, Silas, Meredith, April, Matt? Sometimes I even find it difficult to remember who is alive anymore (because April unfortunately is still alive, isn't she?).

The only good point is that finally we got some closure for Caroline when it comes to Tyler. She can finally stop whining, because those calls were actually a pity party that had been going for too long.

Matt got a mansion. He's having a blast and drinking all of Tyler's bourbon. Other than Silas and Matt though, I don't really care. Bonnie's character reversal isn't working on me. Sorry. And April? Zzzzzzzzzz.

So glad Tyler isn't coming back. Does anyone know if he's going to be in any more episodes? (Pls say no, pls say no).

PS Once Klaus leaves (BOOOO) who will pick up that side of Caroline's love triangle? Probably not Matt. Any ideas?

Seriously!! Hayley and Klaus! And it's not just my Klaroline love! Why Hayley!!! It makes no sense, she despised him from the beginning, she plotted to kill of his hybrids and now they're sleeping together! I get it that it's an excuse to see the birth mark and that will have something to do in the spin-off but I couldn't care less, I hate her character it's inconsistent, fake and just BORING!! Why are they even having her on the Originals, it's called ORIGINALS. We don't need Hayley there, were better off not having her there! God she the worst character they've ever had in the show, at least they normally just kill off her kind of characters, why hasn't she died!

Agree with InsanelyMe below. Perfect paragraph. (And that's from a teacher!! J/K I teach band. =D )

Hayley is the worst though. Their shirtless-hug was SO FORCED and nothing like that ever would have happened in real life. She was OPENLY INSULTING his paintings (which are beautiful, of course) and then he's like, 'Hey! Uncool. Let's do so much sex now!' IT DOESN'T MAKE ANY SENSE. Hate.

YES.
I don't even want The Originals.
It's just taking most of the best characters from TVD.
And no Klaroline, c'mon.
What's season 5 going to be about?
But your paragraph is perfect.

I want Klaroline to happen sooo bad! And the Klaus/Hayley sex was just awful...and Klaus and Hayley are gorgeous people, it should have AT LEAST been hot. But it wasn't. Sex scene fail. I hated that lip bite too, she practically ate her lower lip. And are they REALLY going to take Klaus out of TVD? He is by far the best character on the show (besides Caroline of course). And I've begun to hate every relationship Elena is in now. And I use to be a big Delena shipper! Elena needs to stop dating and get her shit together. Stefan needs to find someone fun with character and stop hanging out at his ex-gfs cheerleading competitions. Damon just needs to stop popping out his eyes every time theres a close up...we get it, pretty eyes, now go back to being season 2 Damon! Although I think Elena was a tad justified in being a bitch to Caroline from how she treated her the past season, it was too much trying to kill her. That was a weird plot. And pretty much everyone was ok with her doing that. Except Caroline obvs. So we are suppose to believe that if Damon and Stefan hadn't arrived in the nick of time she would have killed her? I can't wait to see how Bonnie interacts with new Elena. I hope she goes all Willow on her ass.

I feel like the Damon/ Elena relationship is so stupid! Especially with Elena’s “emotions turned off”. Even without the sire bound it is essentially like Damon is sleeping with a blow up doll. Gross, I know but thats what its like. He is putting all this effort into this relationship and is getting nothing “emotionally”, no love, no happiness, NOTHING in return, EXCEPT for a depressed, emotionless girlfriend, which is pretty sad.
Sigh, it was so much more simple with Elena/Stefan but I understand that they have to change things up, but I CANT TAKE THIS MUCH MORE! LOL
Klaus is hot!
Lexi is back next week! YAH! someone with a personality that I can enjoy lol
Tyler is not gone gone right? We would have heard something about the actor leaving the show or joining another right?
Can the Spin off hurry up already?

I think Lexi's back in a flashback though 'cause remember she died . . . (CURSE U DAMON!!) that's the only time I was super mad at Damon for being a dick. Otherwise I'm like, 'Oh, well I guess it's his personality . . . I'll forgive him this one time.'

This felt like an empty empty episode... I agree it tried bringing back some good old TVD feeling but it failed. At least for me, this was self-repeating and boring episode when nothing happened and even Klaus-Hayley sex was not that much about sex as a measure to show some sink, i.e. reveal the birthmark. Not interested in the Hayley stiryline, so not interested!!!

As soon as I saw Elena walking in the middle of the road, I was like, “Is she gonna pull a Damon?” Yep. :D

Lol, Caroline being in the naked Elena scene made it even funnier than the previews suggested.

Damon to Klaus: “So I just came up with a list. It’s called Things You Suck At. Number one: finding Katherine. Ever.” Lmao.

I guess Elena really wanted that ribbon. Oh snap, then she lets Caroline fall and get hurt. As if she wasn’t on people’s shitlists already. :p Still, I like this bitchy side to her.

I love when Klaus gets philosophical.

Watching Stefan try to babysit Elena is hilarious.

When Stefan was talking about picking a girl up over his shoulder and taking her out onto the dance floor, I immediately thought, “Well, Caroline’s right there…” Cute.

Holy shit, Klaus is finally getting laid. It’s about damn time. It’s funny that I’m actually happy about it and I don’t care who it’s with.

“Just some underage drinking and drug use.” Lol. Man, I so wanted Caroline to kick her ass there, even if I’m enjoying Elena this way. Caroline deserves to get some ass kicking in.

I agree with Damon and I hope Rebekah takes his advice to heart.

Okay, I know Elena had a bit of training and everything, but Caroline is the vampire who always seems to have strength superior to what she should. It’s kind of weird that Elena was able to pretty easily overpower her. Then again, this show has never been consistent about that issue. Still, I didn’t like that, but I guess part of it was because I love Caroline. Although, I sure as hell wouldn’t mind seeing what Caroline would be like if she were to either turn her humanity off or go dark. She’s so the opposite of that (moreso than any other character IMO) that it would just be fun to watch. I mean, I know that it’s what makes her different, but still. As much as I appreciate the fact that she's so resilient and good...everyone has a breaking point. Next to Elena, no one has been through more shit than Caroline.

I’m also curious as to what the deal is/was with Damon’s old friend Will.

I'm not surprised Elena could take on Caroline, because Caroline has always been the biggest Damsel in Distress. Elena kind of always annoyingly put herself in danger trying to keep people from dying for her.
Reply
Flag
I think Elena was able to overpower Caroline simply because she was apparently willing to kill her. Caroline was serious about kicking Elena's arse, but didn't buy into it as a fight-to-the-death thing. If you're beating someone to beat them, I think you probably hold back a little something that comes out when you're beating someone to kill them. Or something. (I don't beat people, personally, promise!)

As for her darkside, remember season 1. She was a Mean Girl, and not just a bully. She was truly mean, jealous, and all around unsympathetic. In other words, human Caroline = switched off Elena. I don't need to see Caroline go dark, because she was dark already. What I do want to see is more of is that she actually likes being a vampire and knows she's a better person for it - this is what Klaus brought out with her. The idea that she is young and strong and immortal, and that she should be having fun.

That's true, but I want a little darker than just being mean. :p I do love that Klaus has tried to show Caroline how much being a vampire is actually a good thing and I do think she believes that.

Absolutely. Look, I get the Klaroline hate. It would be icky for her to forget all the awful things he's done (although, Riper Stefan What?). What makes Klaroline appealing is what it brings out of each of their personalities. Caroline, realizing that there is a whole world out there and an eternity to explore it. Klaus learning to trust someone, seeing Caroline's amazing potential. You know how sometimes someone can be sort of a jerk, but then they pair up with a really awesome GF/BF, and it makes you realize they must be a much better person inside than you thought? That's what Klaus' love for Caroline does for me.

Yes. Anyone who is reading this, you can skip my comment above and just read this. It is much much better and more thought-out. Also adorable. How much do you want to see Caroline go someplace? She is the type of person (who in Mystic Falls is few and far between) who can actually go somewhere and be something bigger than who she would be without Klaus's help. And by 'help' I mean encouragement and 'I believe in you & love you tons' attitude. Which I do believe everyone needs at some point in their life. I don't expect Caroline to forgive the awful things Klaus has done, nor do I expect her to stop from attempting to stop Klaus from killing Tyler, and thus making him an even WORSE person than he is already. I think he actually NEEDS her to be there and stop him from doing those types of things, hence allowing her to better his personality as well as he bettering hers. Already, I think Caroline has become a better person since she met Klaus, and he has been more trusting (which usually gets him into trouble) and open to potential friends.

Alright, this is possibly one of the worst episodes of TVD I have ever watched. It's just that every single aspect bored me, disgusted me, irritated me, or all three. So, I should start with the top ranking suck-factors.

1. Elena is such a child. Nobody kill me, but I liked Elena before, and when I didn't like her, I was ignoring her. But now? NOW is when she's being whiny and stupid. The others who turned and flipped the switch didn't do that. She makes that failed attempt at manipulation with Damon, and that's the only honest vampirism we see out of her. Otherwise, she's biting people because she wants the ribbon! Wah, POOR BABY ELENA! Everything she does is childish. I waited weeks for that? No. No way. Turning off your EMOTIONS doesn't screw your LOGIC, and vampires have a sense of self-preservation, so she's doing a sucky job at this whole emotionless vamp thing. Drop your not-thick-skulled friend on her face in a crowd--no one will notice! She's doing what she thinks is right and trying not to disturb the public. Even in her cold state, how does Elena see that as dumb? Because she's acting like a five-year-old being told no! "Don't compare me to Katherine"? Oops, sorry, you murderous, malicious, manipulative vamp bitch. THAT part of Elena still shines through her emotionless state. What is she? A little girl who doesn't want to be compared to her older sister? Elena, just UGH.

2. Hayley (and her nasty sex): When did she strike a protection deal (though it's obviously not the only protection they needed) with this guy? It was sprung on us kind of weirdly. Plus, all the lame chemistry was for naught. It was unbelievable, annoying, and some half-assed way to get my favorite male character and least favorite character (ever) onto The Originals. I mean, I despised that bitch (pun intended), but she obviously had a lot of self-respect, and she hated Klaus from day one. But then she goes through his paintings and sees that he's lonely like every other vampire, and suddenly she's got a lady boner? It makes no sense. Plus, to my sincere disappointment, Klaus's writing and lines sucked this episode, at least a little. He sounded so cliche and "broken", even with all the sarcasm about it. And you know what? I'm pretty sure Klaus hated Hayley, too, for being so harsh and rude to him (justifiable), but she does her weirdo flirting and he just bones her. Like that. Even though they repeatedly mentioned the girl he loved, but then again, why did they do that? They spoke of Caroline, like, four times. This was all rushed and ill-timed and unexpected, and just a badly written way to get them together for The Originals, which holds no appeal for me anyway. Sorry, Phoebe, but I hate your character. I never liked her at ALL. Did anybody want this sex? ANYBODY? Come forward so I can bitch-slap the idiocy out of you. This wasn't just my Klaroline love speaking up; this is ALL on the writers, every stupid bit of it. Your mark doesn't make you special, Hayley. This "shocking reveal" about you is just a way to get more females on TO.

3. Speaking of shocking reveals, didn't they seem pretty overshadowed? Silas is here (duh)? I'm sorry, I'm too busy with Klaus boning his pet dog and Elena throwing a tantrum naked. Wouldn't Silas have done something?

4. On that note, where was everybody?! Bonnie, Silas/Shane, and Shane were all missing, and Matt was almost gone, too. Is Shane alive or not? Hr came back, but we never learner if it was permanent. Why didn't Rebekah say anything about that? Did I miss something? Because if Damon and Caroline knew Bonnie (who is orchestrating mass murderer, BTW, just so you know) was with Silas, they would drop shit and go help her. But she wasn't even mentioned! WTF? (OH, and very nice to see you, Sheriff, I missed you.)

5. Did they use up all their emotional scenes last month because all there was was that one Rebekah scene and Damon looking at his picture of him and Will in NYC. The house burnt down, Bon-Bon's crazy and Silas is here, BUT LET'S ALL GET DRUNK, YIPEE! Nope, only tears for Caroline over Tyler. Way to shove that in there last minute, writers.

5 1/2. The fight scene was fine, but I wish Caroline would have kicked Elena's ass and not boosted her childish ego. Just whooped her, then last minute, Elena goes for the kill. Everybody's betrayed and happy. Oh, and, "...you won't feel guilty for all those dirty thoughts you have about Klaus." "Shut UP!" That exchange was great and a spark of hope for all Klaroline shippers. And hilarious, gasp-worthy and scandalous. It's not just us with dirty thoughts about Klaus?

6. Overall, this was all just very uninteresting and bad. Here are some other points, bad and good. Is Damon manipulated so easily by stupid Elena, or did he really just want to go to NYC? - Does Matt own the Lockwood estate since he was able to invite Caroline in? - Rebekah is no longer my least favorite character anymore. Just Hayley. - I don't even ship Forwood, but I miss Tyler, and that Car/Matt scene was lovely. - Steroline? Really? Cute, but Caroline's sort of reserved. But good for you, Stefan, being adorable. - It was fine, but I had enough Debekah the episode before. Damon and Rebekah should at least be a once-every-few-episodes thing.

That's it! Hope you liked/agreed with/contemplated my review!
In basic, I disliked the episode utterly.

Great comment, in general, though I do like Elena like this, as long as it's temporary!

You are RIGHT ON with points 2, 3, 4, and 5 1/2. :) Also like that you have a 5 1/2. :)

Especially 2, of course!!! Hayley is soo lame.

And I agree that I wanted Caroline to kick Elena's ass. That sucked. Caroline has way more experience as a vampire. But, I guess we can chalk it up to Caroline not wanting to hurt Elena, while Elena was emotionless and out for blood. . .

Have I given you the Einstein award yet? I'm giving you another one, because this is absolutely brilliant. I agree with everything. Elena being a bratty child is the worst. Klaus and Hayley make me want to go shoot someone (not really, but I'm super mad) and pretty much zero emotions.

The only things that got me through the episode were small little things and interactions between characters like Damon and that random jock at the party. The big things pissed the hell out of me though. Ugh.

Matt owns the Lockwood place now because Tyler FedEx-ed him the deed or something. Can we just say I can't wait for episode 18? I think you know why.

Look, maybe Tyler's just crazy? I honestly don't care enough about his character to think about that. Maybe he had a copy on his computer and printed it out at some wireless cafe in Hawaii? Which it was established is where he is. Which is good because there is a volcano near by for him to take swimming lessons in. Doggy paddle (pun) or something. :)

OK, weirdly, I did not hate this episode, but I agree with all of your points. How is that?

I also miss Tyler and think he was sent off abruptly, without proper fanfare/sadness. I'm not sure I even really buy Klaus' intent to kill him - it just seems his heart isn't in it.

Damon wants to go to NYC because he does want to find Katherine. He also probably thinks he can manage Elena better if he gives her more slack on the leash - but that's Damon's fault. He's a fixer. He thinks he can teach people moderation. Same thing he was always pitching at Stefan. Damon is lonely, and wants to go out and life a wild but discreet immortal party life with SOMEONE, and yet they all go off the rails on him.

oh and the less Bonnie in an episode, the better.

I've always liked Bonnie more than others do, but she's especially interesting this season, since she's on board with mass murders and is a match for the Originals. She rocks this season. For once, they had to leave her out not because she has nothing to do with the main plotline, but because she has everything to do with it! If she's in the episode, so is Silas and their evil plan. When Bonnie's back, you know evil is afoot!

Big yes to every single point! It's like you wrote what was on my mind. Can't stand Elena, don't understand why everyone is fussing over her. Hayley has to be the worst character ever put on this show - worse than April even! - and that sex scene was so forced and out of left field. Really uninteresting episode. They kept focusing on stupid stuff like Elena behaving badly and not devoting any time to the interesting stuff, like what's going on with Silas.

The only good part of this episode were the few meager bones the writers tossed us Klaroline shippers (Caroline not denying her dirty Klaus fantasies, Hayley and Klaus talking about Tyler being gone forever and Klaus' thing for Caroline). And even those weren't much because they were sandwiched in between painfully contrived scenes of Klaus and Hayley.

Or Klaus and Bonnie, for all I care. . . Or whoever. I'm not super attached to the couples. But the lack of chemistry was staggering, and (through no fault of Phoebe Tonkin's) her character is moral-less, but not in a fun way, and very dull. In no way an equal to Klaus, and an even bigger letdown because we've seen the kind of chemistry he CAN HAVE with Caroline, and this pales, very much, in comparison.

Well, for me Kayley makes more sense then abusive Klaroline relationship. I'm just really tired with Klaus "be nice to me or I'll kill you" attitude. He didn't force Hayley in any way to sleep with him. It was her decision - and I like it.

and Hayley's character was supposed to be this independent and self-respected woman,... and let's face it,... while it is perfectly fine to have casual sex,... having sex with someone who has killed the ''friends '' that you screwed over,... with someone who you know is having very strong feeling about someone else,... It goes against everything the character supposedly stood for,... and the sex had no back-story,... most probably because the writers just decided to do it for the sake of the spin-off out of the blue,... which is the most maddening part for me,... why sex to join these two ? this is very 90210,...

It was forced. Klaus was offering her protection. (which, what?? When was this arranged?) Lock her in a dungeon. Problem solved. Sleeping with her isn't really going to PROTECT her. At all. It was unbelievably forced and I felt like vomiting through the whole ordeal.

Yes, I read your comment / rant. And I think you're biased against Kayley cause you hate Phoebe's character.

I disagree things were rushed - it was clear from the beginning that Hayley was the only one who was not afraid of Klaus - and he was clearly intrigued by that. I think their "affair" happened mostly off-screen.

As they say haters gonna hate and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
2
Flag
But that's the thing: this isn't about comparing it to Klaroline, this is about the affair itself. If you read my comment a couple comments above this one, there's an entire section dedicated to Kayley in this episode. It was rushed, unbelievable, and just a way to get them together for The Originals.
