The Vampire Diaries "Catch Me If You Can" Review: The Race for the Cure Is On

The Vampire Diaries S04E11: “Catch Me If You Can”

Let’s just get this out of the way: It really, really sucks that Price is gone, not just from the Vampire Diaries photo-recapping scene, but from TV.com as a whole. Like Jen said last week, we aren’t going to even attempt to fill his very funny shoes, and there’s a good chance that a rotating cast of TV.com writers are going to take a crack at reviewing The Vampire Diaries over the next few episodes. For this week at least, I’m going to play it pretty straight. This is an interesting time to check in on the show, and I’ll try not to go too far off on a tangent.

Before we get into “Catch Me If You Can,” allow me to briefly describe my feelings about The Vampire Diaries in its current state. Love triangles and shipper allegiances side, this season has felt, at least to me, more plot device-driven than normal. Maybe that’s not really the case, because TVD has always burned through one ridiculous MacGuffin after another, but perhaps after three-plus years, the show’s go-to moves start to grow cumbersome. It happens. I guess the stop-and-start, never-ending search for the vampire cure isn’t any more silly than anything that happened with the moonstone. But there is a sense, albeit a small one, that we’ve been down this road before.

With that said, this season has succeeded by tapping into some new, raw emotions for the three main characters. Regardless of your feelings on who Elena loves, or how she loves them, I think it’s fair to say that the reconfiguration of her bonds with the Salvatores has taken the characters to compelling places.

In any event, “Catch Me If You Can” was the typical kind of mid-season episode we’ve seen from TVD before: There was some cleaning up to do in the fallout of last week’s more visceral episode, but there were also a lot of moving pieces slowing lurching toward whatever next Big Moment the show is building to. Thankfully, unlike a lot of shows, The Vampire Diaries knows how to merge these dueling functions into one episode relatively well, especially when the plot manages to progress character stories; for the most part, this episode did that.

Although the show is still sort of cheating with the existence of Damon and Elena’s sire bond, it also seems dedicated to exploring the consequences of Elena’s recent choices. She, for a number of reasons, “chose” Damon. But even after she became aware of the sire bond and was forced to tell Stefan the truth about her feelings for Damon, she was still stuck with the choices she’d made, and this episode shined a bright light on the realities of those choices. Meaning, leaving Jeremy to be trained by Damon resulted in very specific events, ones that put innocent people in danger, including Matt. And Stefan knowing the full truth about Elena’s relationship with Damon led to another series of events that don’t particularly benefit Elena either.

Of course, in this regard, Elena is sort of screwed, as “Catch Me If You Can” displayed. Even though she was willing to look past Damon’s note that he might make some hasty choices with Jeremy last week, when those choices actually manifested, Elena was certainly uncomfortable. When Damon was compelled* by Kol to kill Jeremy, that wasn't exactly Damon’s fault, but it did highlight what can happen when Damon’s in charge of a responsible plan that doesn’t directly involve protecting Elena. Further, now that Stefan has finally started to rebound from his funk and become much more apathetic about Elena, Damon, the True Meaning of Life and just about anything else, Elena can’t help but feel guilty (because that’s what she does) about what she brought out of him.

* Is it just me, or has there been an excessive amount of compulsion on the show lately?

As a result, Damon almost killed Jeremy, only for Stefan to save the day by breaking his brother’s neck and locking him in the cellar until further notice. I don’t think the show wants us to see this as Elena’s “fault,” but the events of this episode did put her in a tough spot—so much so that she decided the best course of action will be to kill Kol, both to help Jeremy kill a bunch of vamps all at once, but also because she’s just a bit pissed at Kol for compelling Damon. It’ll be interesting to see how this plan develops. I’m guessing, based on TVD’s track record, that it will go very poorly, but I’d love to see Elena be forced with the fact that she led to the death of thousands of vampires. That she’s even considering it tells us something about where her mindset is right now.

No disrespect to Ian Somerhalder, who I think is really great on the show, but there are few things I love more about TVD than detached, sarcastic Stefan. The show clearly enjoys moving the brothers around on the “hero/antihero” scale, but the writers do a nice job of bringing different layers of complexity to them so they don’t just switch places depending on who Elena is in True Love with, and Paul Wesley does fantastic work when he’s able to let loose as this version of Stefan. He was far and away the best part of this episode, from the honest assertion that sex with Rebekah appealed to him because she was crazy to his retort to Elena about his palling around with Rebekah (“And this will be the second time Damon tried to kill Jeremy. Nobody’s perfect right?”). Wesley and Stefan have so much more energy when they're not moping over Elena, as central to the show as that relationship is.

But, on top of those nice little character moments and a nice performance from Wesley, this episode did a really great job of crystallizing all the warring factions in what the show has now labeled “The Race for the Cure,” which is both moderately offensive to various fundraisers for terminal illness and funny because everyone keeps saying it with a straight face. While it is still unclear to me exactly why every character wants the cure and what they plan to do with it (other than “keep it from everyone else”), it was important for TVD to lay out the alliances and stakes as they stand now. All three factions (Team Shane featuring Bonnie the Uncontrollable, Team Crazy Sex, and Team Klamon) own important pieces to this puzzle. Shane has Bonnie and all the pre-work he’s done to raise Silas; Stefan and Rebekah have the headstone, and Damon and Klaus have Jeremy and the sword.

While it’s guaranteed that everyone will double-cross everyone else, it’s still smart for the show to stop and take stock of where characters stand and suggest how they might proceed. For the first time this season, it feels like TVD’s love triangle and its larger plot mechanics are on more of an even playing field. For the show to be at its best, that’s a necessity.

NOTES

– Every time Bonnie gets to do something interesting, the show pulls the rug out from under her, so I’m holding my breath about her knowledge of Shane’s big plan. It’d sure be nice if something substantive came of this.

– Elena’s plan to wipe out Kol and his entire line is insane, correct? That feels like both a flawed plan and one that Elena would immediately regret on a deep level.

– No Caroline or Tyler this week, so it’ll be curious to see how they’ll fit into the Race for the Cure.

– Can’t imagine that Caroline will be happy that her bestie Stefan is shacking up with Rebekah.

– So who sent the weirdo that bit off his own tongue and then killed himself? Elijah, probably. HOPEFULLY.

Great Review Mr Cory and i hope you will be sticking with the show for the rest of the season. The episode is good in some parts and is a set up for things to come in the future, The writers needs to clarify on the major issue of the cure as its the main theme of the season and would love to see the Silas story in the future episodes so as to keep things interesting.

I think its just pointless to 'hate' characters! They're just a figment of a lot of ppl's imaginations put together. They're not meant to make all viewers happy. Sometimes they're meant to not make ANY viewers happy. But cursing them, hating them? That's just...pointless. It is disturbing to find ppl abusing Elena and Bonnie (these two especially) and also Stefan and Damon all over the internet just because they don't like something the character does. This is the readon why I have been avoiding any fan discussions of TVD and especially tumblr because all the hate just makes me sad. It's a tv show! That too about vampires! Let's enjoy what we can and ignore what we don't like, and point out flaws just to serve as constructive criticism for the showrunners/writers/whoever concerned.

1. Ugh…Bonnie. The last time she was interesting was when she wanted Elena and Caroline to take witch drugs.

2. I just don't want Kol to die. He's the sanest person in Mystic Falls. (BTW, have you ever used sane and Mystic Falls in the same sentence?)

3. I think it's weird that everybody kinda forgot about Mayor Lockwood drowning TWO EPISODES AGO. I hope Caroline is off somewhere grieving. Give it time, babygirl. Tyler and Haley (She wasn't in this episode either, was she?) are probably shirtless-hugging in some dungeon. Don't care.

4. I dunno, she didn't really care that he was a mass murderer for several months so…meh. I'm a Klaroline fan.

5. Some other people mentioned this too, but I hope it's Elijah working together with Katherine. Elijah could, like, be the brains, and Katherine could convince him to do something as heinous as compel a rando dude to bite his tongue off. Classic Katherine move. Plus, imagine a Katherine & Elijah shirtless-hug. Right?

I dunno if you misundertood me, but I was laughing about the "(BTW, have you ever used sane and Mystic Falls in the same sentence?)" part b/c it was so true! I don't want Kol to die either, as you say he is the only one whos plan makes sense! I've never cared much for him before but now I think I am Team Kol on this one! :O

Dear InsaneleyMe, don't hate on Stefan just because he's trying to get over his heartbreak from that goddamed whore Elena. Rebekah IS a bitch, there's no doubt about that but lets just all give them a break. Stefan deserves it

Yeah, I know Stefan should be able to get over Elena. I'm just complaining about how he becomes totally careless and mean. And THEN he slept with Rebekah and I lost all hope. I liked ripper-Stefan more than this.
Damon needs his bad-ass back. Not like Stefan has become a "bad-ass" (cough, dick, cough), but just…awesomeness.

I hated Rebekah. But I was used to her bitchiness, and now I Hate Stefan for being a heartless, grade-A d-bag. When they had sex, I WANTED TO BARF.

Still in love with Shane (and a possible Bonnie/Shane, teacher/student relationship)!

Them having sex was a good character development for Stefan as cuz as clearly mentioned by the reviewer Stefan at his best when not worrying about Elena and they were both hurt by people they care about so its understandable for them to hook up.

I disagree. Them having sex was one of the best parts of the episode IMO.

It was interesting, that's for sure, but there wasn't much likeable about Rebekah besides her loneliness, and now they've dragged the adorable golden boy to a place he should never be--and I'm not referring to Rebekah's lady-parts.

Will every member of the Original family be on their spin-off? Only that way it makes sense.
They could visit vampire diaries once in a while.

Also please give Kol a little bit more fun scnenes that show his personality. i'm sure he can do more than killing or threatening to kill - it's getting boring. He could be the funniest character right after Damon.

The actor reminds me of the Weasley twins and I really want him to do some cute shenanigans and all he does is killing and he is not even imaginative about it.

And of course I hope he won't get killed.

Cory if anyone could replace Price I think you are the only reviewer close on here. You bring a very cerebral and serious review to all the shows u cover. I'll miss Price and the hilarity he brought to his reviews but if we can't have him, I think your the person to do TVD justice. You actually cover all plot lines and and act like u care about the shows you cover which I think is something that TV.coms reviewers are missing as of late. Please keep reviewing TVD and don't let anyone destroy Teen Wolf when it comes back just because people who've never seen it think its a trashy MTV parody. I couldn't bare it if TVD or Teen Wolf were mistreated by a reviewer who doesn't care. thanks Cory!

Does anyone else want Jeremy dead? Even now that he's got his own plot arc he has yet to develop a little something called...a personality -_____- Even Kol's got a more developed one and we've only got him for a few episodes!

Great job, sir!! You covered everything right out of the gate and though it was a different format than what we'ere used to, I don't think I'm alone in being appreciative that you took on the challenge and succeeded. :) Plus, I think you made me like this episode more than I did when I watched it. So double Kudos, man.
-YES. I'm so glad you mentioned the compulsion thing. It is problematic isn't it? Never before have they used compulsion this much and it's almost too easy for them to write themselves out of situations or into them by using compulsion. It gives the Originals entirely too much power and doesn't help explain why they always come across as powerless despite that. Compulsion as the ultimate plot device. Compulsion is the new Bonnie. I hate that. It's kind of lazy, for lack of a better word, and the writers on this show are clearly anything but lazy.
- YES! SEXY SNARKY STEFAN IS BACK!!!! I LOVE sexy, snarky Stefan. He's my favorite Stefan. This is why I love Stefan when he isn't hung up on Elena. I mean and can we talk about the kickass lines he had in this? "You don't know who I am when I'm not in love with you." BOOM! Or that line about crazy sex. I've always been more Team Salvatore brothers because I LOVE them. I'm okay saying that Stefan stole this episode for me.
- There are moments when the cess pool that is MF hookups make me cringe a bit, but I couldn't even be mad when Stefan finally boned Beks. Have at your crazy sex bro, I heart you man.
- I can't lie. I didn't miss Caroline, or Tyler, or June...no, Januar...April. Didn't miss her either. Episodes work so much better when they trim the fat.
-Ian S. can pull off so much, I'll forever love him long time, but trying not to laugh while he told Jer he was coming to kill him so RUN...it was so cheesy it was hard not to. I like damon and Jeremy though. When you exclude the killing, they actually have a legit brotherly bond...well, if you include the killing they still have a brotherly like bond.
- I wonder if there will ever be an episode where I don't want to smack Elena for whining about something. Stefan is awesome now, please don't ruin that with making everything about you...again.
- Shane: Bonnie is the most powerful witch on Earth right now?
Bonnie: I am?
The TVD fandom: SHE IS?!! O_o
I love how terrified Bonnie's father looked of her, and I just laughed, because he hasn't been around his daughter long enough to see her flicker candles, nosebleed, and make feathers float. I'm still waiting for Bonnie to be badass. She sort of came close in this episode, for Bonnie anyway, but they have to stop TELLING us that she's a badass and start SHOWING us that she is. There were some interesting moments having her father who up til now had seemingly abandoned her trying to "protect" her against the cult dude who she's trying to work out her "daddy issues" on.
-Kol is easily the most annoying Original of them all. He was like that before his N'Sync haircut. So he was Team Crazy sex, I mean Stebekah, but now he's gone all rogue. I'm patiently waiting for Elijah to come up in this piece and handle business the way he does. Oh Elijah, how many ways doth I miss thee? Too many.
- I love how Klaus has become the Vampire Godfather of MF. They come, kiss his ring, stroke his ego, ask him for help. He buffs his nails an reluctantly agrees. I love Klaus. I'm loving Klamon, they need some more action though.

Is Elena getting on anyone elses nerves? I have been a stelena fan since the beginning of this show but i have to say it was nice to see stefan with someone else! The way elena tried to make it about her annoyed the hell out of me! not EVERYTHING is about elena - maybe it was in the past but this show has progressed so much that she needs to realize she cant have it both ways. I needed to vent!

Thank you for the recap, i agree with the others that is is nice to have something! something is better than nothing!

Amen, my friend. A-freakin-men. It's no secret at this point that honestly both brothers are so much better not getting sucked into Elena's magic hoo-ha of suck. They're better when they aren't being dragged down by her. I just happen to think Damon is more tolerable when he's with Elena than Stefan is when he's with Elena, but yeah, both of them should be happy elsewhere. In fact I look forward to the inevitable day in the love triangle when both of them have moved on and are bro-bonding and she's left pining after them both. I assure you, I'm not usually this sadistic. :)

Yes! that would be a great plotline and i would be all for it. it was ok for the first 2 seasons (which was stretching it) but it is season 4! can we please move past this elena crush??? Caroline, Rebekah or hell even Katherine would be a better choice for these guys. It would be great to see it mixed up and to see what elena would do when she is not the center of their worlds.

pretty good review. I LOVED PRICE but that being said, I can see why he felt recapping was getting to be too much work - his reviews ended up being very long. Even Price mentioned this once or twice and said he was going to cut back on the pictures but the reviews were mostly still long. I liked this review - it was concise but still covered big points. Of course, I missed seeing a couple funny photos - one of Price's last reviews with a photo of Bonny with the witches' weed and the caption "Lez get high" was one of the funniest photos ever (had such a perfect capture of a goofy smile on her face too). Still I think this style of review of not covering every beat of the show can work. I am a fan of the show and I do watch it first and think a large amount of the people do the same and it should be fine to assume we know what happened in the show - just excited to talk about the larger subtext of the events and like another commenter mentioned below - couldn't hurt to make a little fun of TVD's craziness too.

Every time Rebekah is on screen it's abundantly clear that this show would be way better and miles less frustrating if she was the central character instead of Elena (aka the worst character ever).

Also the mystery weirdo or whatever guy that broke into Shane's office.... makes sense that he was sent by Kol, ya know. Since Kol also knew about Shane wanting to bring Silas back, and was also present with Rebekah when Shane said he had the tumbstone.
Also Kol seems to have a weird thing going on with taking people appendages off.

Seems pretty obvious the guy was sent by Kol.

I also kind of secretly hope that Elena and Damon will end up working with Kol. Like when she and Jeremy go to kill Kol, they talk it out and end up working with him. Because Elena said herself that she likes being a vampire, it's who she is now. And then she wouldn't have to worry about Jeremy getting more homicidal with evey kill, like Connor did.

Maybe Elijah would come back, and back them up. That would be awesome.

For the record, everyone keeps blaming Damon for the crappy situation Jeremy was put in, but they forget that actually under Damon's tutelage, Jeremy hadn't even killed one vampire, because Damon didn't think he was ready.

It wasn't until Klaus showed up and Damon had no choice, but to go with it because... hey it's Klaus. So the best Damon could do was go with him and help him. Damon even held Kol off so Jeremy could get away.

So people seriously need to lay off Damon. Including Jeremy. Yes, there was that one time Damon snapped his neck. Although Jeremy was literally looking for a way to die because he was so despressed. Damon has also always saved his sister and saved his cute butt a lot too. So get over it Jer, and stoping being a dick.

Speaking of being a dick, Stefan is now the bad brother? Please. I like Stefan hurt and angry over being broken hearted, but he unless he's the ripper, he doesn't pull off being "the bad brother" very well. He just comes off as an asshole, where when Damon is being the bad brother he regrets it because he wants to be the better man.

I also know that a lot of people were mad at Elena for calling Stefan to help with compelled Damon, but I think that was an important development for her. She saw that she Stefan really didn't care, and that she wasn't going to be able to count on him anymore. Which is why she took it into her own hands and thought of going after Kol, who endangered her brother and her new boyfriend. She's pissed, and now she's finally acting. You go girl! I hope that this will continue to develope for Elena. I like her actually acting and taking things into her own hands.

Lastly, (sorry this is so long, it was intended to be) I was seriously hoping that Bonnie was going to go over the edge. She was so close! Maybe that's just a taste of evil Bonnie, and later she will be the one to kill Shane, which is crazy because just last week it looked like she was going to kiss him a couple of times. Great tension there.

So I'm going to finish this with wishes that Elena becomes more emboldened, and saves Damon for a change, that Bonnie goes over the edge, and now that Stefan finally got a good lay, maybe he'll stoping being an uber dick.

Damon's figuring out that he was compelled by Kol was a little lame IMO. It would be so much better if it was Elena who guessed it, seeing that Damon was acting weird and all... She would be then forced to think and act, and possibly choose between her brother and her boyfriend, making it a real crisis and a compelling dilemma. Instead she calls Stefan, proving again that she is basically useless. She loves her brother and wants to protect him yet she's just standing there pleading with Damon instead of actively trying to stop him. She should be the one snapping Damon's neck (surely there's a way around the sire bond: Damon was asking to be killed, not wanting to hurt Jeremy, and Elena should have granted him that wish, even if it meant hurting him).
However, a point for her for coming with a plan to kill Kol. Hope it fails, cause I adore him. He is clever and mischievous, and the only one that is actually making sense when it comes to the cure storyline. I'm worried that he and Rebekah are still not confirmed for the spin-off...
Rebekah and Stefan were really fun. She brings the best in everybody. I wanted her with Damon last season but she's good with Stefan too.

I don't think that Silas will be a long-term villain since they have enough power to stop him (in my opinion) if they all decided to work together. One of the main reasons why they struggled with Alaric in the previous season was because they all didn't work together (if even Rebekah had decided to stay and fight Alaric they would have been able to stop him).

All of them finally working together may fix some of the bad blood that has happened between all of them and open up the way for the spin-off.

I'm assuming Alaric is going to come back since he was shown watching Damon at his grave. Whether other dead characters will come back is still up in the air, but Alaric is good enough in my opinion so that they may have a proper farewell.

I was kind of hoping/expecting that Jeremy would actually kill Damon, because they could bring him back. A dramatic turn, end of the sire thing, an Elena more motivated in the Race for the Cure, people starting to respect Damon a bit more... Too bad Stefan was there to help.

I would love to see some dead characters but I guess it won't be for long, that would probably be an unbalance of nature, and Bonnie would have to fix it and she would have a lame plot again.

I think he's a creature now (surprise!magic hunter) so the ring will not function on him anymore (just a theory)

I am assuming that he still uses the ring since he did say in the previous season that it will only be when his sister stops hanging out with vampires that he will stop wearing the ring (or something along those lines).

It was a big deal about Damon killing Jeremy because it's Damon. He's aware that Jeremy wears a ring that will resurrect him so he probably would have removed it to permanently kill him.

Trust Elena to come up with such a daft plan - is she forgetting that Damon and Stefan have no idea which of the originals they trace back to? I know that TVD will not kill them off so they are most likely the offspring of Klaus. but still Elena can't be sure of this. She really didn't think this through. (surprise, surprise!)
Matt REALLY needs to make some new friends - how many times does he ALMOST have to get killed? He is the only one of the gang that is still human! If that were me I would have packed up and left Mystic Falls AT LEAST a season ago.

This isn't news but a lot of characters in this show are just stupid. Everyone is on a quest for the holy cure but no one (except maybe Kol) stops to think about the consequenses. I doubt that the cure is just a magical potion lying in the ground somewhere. To get to the cure they have to release some guy named Silas and all that they've heard about him is that he is super powerful. Maybe, just maybe, they should stop and think about this just for a second. Do some research on this guy and discuss the pros and cons.
Pros: Elena becomes a human (how that can be a positive thing I have no idea).
Cons: We release some super powerful guy who not only has been chained up for the last 900 years or whatever but also has the abillity to raise the dead. And the con on this one is actually what Shane want's to do. Raise the dead. Like that has no consequenses? Maybe they'll come back as zombies? At least I doubt that they'll be perfectly normal.

And Elena. Just when I started to like you. You suggested that killing 1/5th of the vampire population is a better alternative than killing, what? Ten? A hundred? You guys don't even know how many you have to kill so you kill a ton of them just to be on the safe side lol. And all for your selfish little reason. I didn't think she cared about the cure anyway.

God this show annoys me too much sometimes. No, TBH this episode wasn't so bad, I liked it. I LOVE the new Stefan and it is so great to see him with a girl who isn't Elena. Wonder who the mystery team is... I mean I want it to be Katherine but sadly I doubt it is.

I almost fell over when Elena's all let's go slaughter Kol and every vampire he's ever turned! Who is this girl and why is murder only acceptable for her when SHE wants it to be? I mean I'm all for it, but I wasn't the one bitching about saving the mailman and his mother the way elena is nortoriously known for doing.

I don't know why anyone wants Elena to be human, if you truly love her. You'd let her be somewhat awesome.

Pffft consequences?! Why on Earth will anyone thing of those?! You know it's bad when the most irritating Original alive is the rational one right now as far as this silas thing.

This show has that effect on folks, dear. Same here with me. I even find myself having a shift on who I like and tolerate these days.

I actually liked this episode, it was better than the last one.The only minus was the lack of Caroline

I am betting on Elijah or Katherine being the mystery team. That would be awesome!

I'm talking Elijah AND Katherine!! I bet they totally hooked up while they were avoiding Mystic Falls and its creepy/mentally insane inhabitants. :)

Elitherine? No. Katherjah? Those two names do NOT go together well.

I actually liked this episode, Kol was annoying but I dont think we're supposed to like is it even possible? Hopefully Elijah will make an appearance I miss seeing him around, although I have a feeling he might die. Bonnies character is struggling now but im sure she'll magically bail the characters out when the time comes and Im loving Stefan right now he's so much better when Elenas character isnt dragging him down. Also Elena compulsion at the end is the first likable thing she's done in a while.

I really enjoyed this review, Price was great but so is Cory.

I agree. Cory was my first choice to take over... His "Gossip Girl" reviews were hilarious even though I stopped (hate)waching in the last season.

I certainly don't expect anyone to even try to write like Price, but can we get a little more critical of this show? Obviously I watch it, so I'm not a hater or anything, but one of its greater merits is how ridiculous it is- and that should not be ignored! In the wise words of sheriff Forbes:
"It's mystic falls... it's actually one of the least ridiculous things I've heard."
AMIRITE?!

YES YOU ARE!!!! That was my favorite thing about Price's recaps…do you remember that crappy tennis racket shot from season 2?

I think it's very difficult to do what Price did. The OUAT reviews try to go on that style, always pointing the stupid things, and I find them incredibly annoying, in an "ok you don't like the show well quit watching and let us be!" kind of way. I prefer a different approach to an imitation.

So right! One of the best things about a Price review is he managed to poke fun at the ridiculous-ness and still love the show. In fact, he managed to love the show because of its ridiculous-ness.

It's what resonated with me as a reader. I'm an intelligent person, I'm aware Mystic Falls is wacky, I don't need to be told about it, or hear too much critism because I Get That. But, I love the show despite (or because) of all the wacky. And I love that they somehow, impossibly, manage to work in real character moments and heartfelt scenes into something that should just be cheesy. It's a trip.

LauraPortaRoy-

Kids_Table just outlined exactly what I was trying to say. I'm not suggesting mindlessly making fun of the stupid things, I'm suggesting that to ignore the ridiculous is to miss a huge part of what is so great about this absurd show. In a way, seriously reviewing this show is taking it even more seriously than the writers of the show even do. They write in lines all of the time that are clear admissions of how far they are stretching their artistic license. It isn't insulting to be critical. In fact, I find it complimentary. It shows that the reviewer is keeping it a real as the writers are pushing the believable. And everyone is having a good time with it.

Ps. emmm... I'm pretty new to all of this "talking about television shows online" business. What is OUAT?

My point is that Price's way of making fun of the show and still sound as if he enjoyed it as much as we do is a difficult way. I wish we could get it (reading Price's reviews used to be better than watching the show, he made me laugh so much!), but if I have to choose between serious reviews and reviews that make me feel stupid for watching, I choose the first.
I'm thinking about Lily Sparks who makes the Once Upon a Time reviews, I suppose she tries to be funny like Price (she even makes photo recaps), but I never laugh or even smile when I read her, and always end up thinking that she doesn't like the show and that she thinks it's full of stupid things and a waste of time and whoever likes it is stupid. I don't think that's even her intention, because you don't review a show weekly if you don't like it at least a bit, do you? I just know that I wouldn't like to get that feeling when I read TVD's reviews.

So basically I agree with you, but I think it's difficult that we get the "love the show because of its ridiculous-ness" that Kids_Table talks about.

Sorry I wrote that much!

I would like to see what Lily Sparks would do with the weekly recap. I'm not bothered by people being critical- if they're watching the show then they probably like it in some way. Maybe she really hated that other show and had to recap it and therefore was not pleased. Who knows? I'm going to see if I can find some of her recaps for that show and see. Thanks for the info and type all you want! Doesn't bother me!

I don't know why, maybe I just miss her, but I have a feeling that "the weirdo that bit off his own tongue" could have been sent by Katherine...

I know a lot of you think it's Elijah, but sacrifice himself not to be caught is a bit too violent for Elijah no ?

Maybe he is a part of Shane's plan ?

Or maybe he was sent by Bonnie's father. Btw what is the deal with him, is he a good or a bad guy ? for now he seems so random.

Sorry for all this questions, but I had to share my thoughts ;)

Oh and nice review !

I read an idea on another review that suggested it was Elijah and Katherine teaming up. It would be awesome to not only have both of those characters back, but for them to be working together. Although I admit it sounds too good to actually turn out to be true.

Elijah's the brains, and Katherine's the one who convinced him to compel Guy-Who-Bit-His-Tongue-Off to do it. Or something.

Completely agree about Stephen. Ive been missing his season 3 persona because he' s so entertaining to watch when he's not lusting over Elena.

Bonnie had an interesting moment, for once.

Elena wanting to kill Kol is completely nuts. It would likely create even more problems in the long w/run w/vamps wanting revenge etc..

I'm a little confused about one scene. When Rebekah told Stefan to stop caring (or whatever the exact words were) was she compelling him to stop caring? Is Stefan compelled to stop caring or did her words just make him realize that he should stop caring?

No I don't think she compelled him, as you said: her words just made him realise that he should stop caring. :)

Thanks. Wasn't sure because for a second there they zoomed to her eyes and I wondered if that meant she was compelling him. Good to know because there's to much compelling going on as it is!

Is it just me who LOVED Kol in this episode? He was like a little insolent child sticking his fingers up at authority "Klaus told me not to hurt Jeremy and I didn't HA HA *Raspberry"

Please, writers, don't be killing off any more Originals (I forgave you for Finn because, well, he was like the most boring person/vampire EVER - should have ripped out a heart or two Finn, ya know 'HAD AT IT'.. oh well, too late). They are the main plot drivers in the show now and all of them would be missed - one reason I'm slightly apprehensive of the new Original show (Who on earth will be left in Mystic Falls that's a little interesting to put a spanner in the works?).

PS. Fan of blunt sarcastic Stefan. He's much more fun. Now - let's put Damon back on track to his snarky, impulsive self and we're golden.

NOT just you. Kol was always a great Original, insolent child was a great comparison kamcnally. I love that he's so into baseball…

I totally agree with the P.S. Stefan is so much more awesome now. This plus the old Damon, now we're talking! I hate that they can't be not-caring, snarky and awesome at the same time. It has to be one or the other.

Why can't Damon just free Elena of they bond? I mean, if they love is really that epic everything will still be fine, they'll still be together without everybody doubting said epic love. Is just ridiculous, why didn't he yet????????

It's so boring that every story line on this show have to be about Elena, so she is a vampire, let her! She is so lame anyway she can't ever run fast like one |fail|. I really miss a real baddie that I can be scare of.
Just sad I will not have my Rebekah/Matt sex scene, it had potential.

-We all know Bonnie will save the day in the finale so she will struggle until that..

-I think it's a great plan as the show has too many characters that are sort of important to the show but they can't put them on the screen at the same time plus Kol is a douche. However, I think it will be harder for them then they think and while Klaus would probably sell out anyone or anything to continue being immortal, not bored or whatever Kol seems very determined to avoid Sylas. Speaking of which, it really sucked he was only about 2000 years old if what Shane said about his tombstone is true. I had hoped for a few more years with a spectactular flashback later on. I love flashbacks. :P

-I think they need to give Tyler a purpose. He was only a douche and only close friend to Matt but aside from being a hybrid he doesn't do much.

-Yes, Elijah. Hopefully...or Katherine! I want them both back. Now.

Good review but it would be interesting to see a couple of other reviewers take on the show if they watch the show. Regardless, good job and I hope you don't take sides (Team Damon or Team Stefan...would be nice if one brother got over Elena so they wouldn't have to be on different teams but that would require the writer's to come up with other drama which they should be able to do without difficulty.

I don't think Kole can die on TVD. Aren't the Originals getting their own show?

"Bad, that's how I react to murder."

You now something's off when Bonnie has the best line of the night and the most badass scene throwing fire-water at her daddy-come-lately.

Kol is the only person in MF with an actively functional brain and that's saying something seeing that he is clearly off his rocker. It only makes sense for them to kill him off now, before he gets too likeable. Pity, cause I'd have liked him in the spinoff... But c'est la vie...

was it just me or was elena being suuuuper awful and condescending this episode (I mean yes, even more than usual)? when stefan told elena she couldn't see damon at the end because of the sire bond and elena was like "i know you're hurt. you're hurt and you're acting out." honestly, who does she think she is?? OBVIOUSLY he's going to be upset that she left him for his brother. she doesn't have to talk down to him like he's being a child and acting immature. idk something about it just rubbed me the wrong way.

Gratulations, Cory, you did a very good job!

I’m just so grateful they brought back the AWESOME BADASS Stefan! Through for me his recent behavior is absolutely out of character. I mean he was like this only on his killing and ripping days, between the times of regret, guilt and Lexie’s interventions. Now he is sober (both the blood and Elena) and bad ass! An absolutely new Stefan!

Now a few words about TVD’s crazy rules of compulsion:
VAMPIRES (who have mind control powers on his own) can easily be compelled by an original, but both HUMAN Jeremy and Shane cannot? Ok, the first is the hunter, but still human, a mortal with special inherited and now activated powers and the latter just spent some quality time with Tibet monks? And now the top of the iceberg: Shane can “compel” Bonnie on his own (fine, it’s just some sort of hypnoses, but still)! Ok, Sure! There is a bunch of weird stuff here, but for me this is just not convincing...

And just for the record: If there actually is a sire bind, than it’s played out really poorly. Look, Damon says stay away, and “every part of her body tells her to get on this car” but the very next day Elena calls with a declaration of love?! … Damon is in charge with the hunters mark, she yells at him in front of Matt and Jer… Just saying…
But in the end it was a pretty good episode, much better as the little library sit in from last week.
