The Vampire Diaries "My Brother's Keeper" Review: Urge Overkills (PHOTO RECAP)

The Vampire Diaries S04E07: "My Brother's Keeper"

While a sizable percentage of The Vampire Diaries viewers care VERY MUCH about the primary love triangle—or even the secondary or tertiary love triangles, squares, or pentagrams [sic]—my personal favorite element of this show is how casually and effortlessly WEIRD it is so much of the time. It's almost like that YouTube video where you're supposed to be paying attention to a card trick but a man in a gorilla suit walks by in the background. Are the TVD writers intentionally trying to insert the strangest things into this show because they think we're only paying attention to Elena's issues? For example this episode, "My Brother's Keeper," contained at least a half-dozen howlingly hilarious moments: Stefan doing log push-ups while talking on the phone; Jeremy WHITTLING in his sleep; the presence of an Olympic gold medalist as a put-upon extra? If it weren't for the dark lighting and emo ballads, this show would be straight-up camp sometimes. Which is a compliment! As I've said before, The Vampire Diaries is an inkblot test and you get out of it whatever you want from it. Me, I'm looking for thrills, angst, and ridiculousness, and "My Brother's Keeper" had A LOT of those things. Solid episode in my opinion! Definitely ended much stronger than it began. WITH SEXY RESULTS.

Haha I know I'm burying the lede of this episode's BIG EVENT, but that's what I'm trying to say here: Even THAT was kind of hilarious. More later! In the meantime let's talk about this episode please thanks!

MEANWHILE IN A FOREST GYM:

Like, WHAT? First of all, why do vampires need to exercise? They are immortal and have super strength already! In fact, shouldn't Stefan be a blur right now? Instead he's huffing and puffing like he's nostalgic for being a weak-ass human again. And second of all, what kind of undead gym rat does push-ups (on moldy logs!) while speaking to someone else on SPEAKER PHONE? Nothing about this situation made any sense and I was laughing out loud (LOL-ing).

Caroline didn't seen to mind though. She was too busy taking Stefan's side in his breakup and also ignoring Gabby Douglas.

Then Klaus showed up to hassle Stefan about whatever part of his plan he needed Stefan to carry out this time. Something about keeping secrets and getting Jeremy to kill vampires? Typical Klaus. Get a hobby Klaus! (Haha just kidding, he developed a MAJOR new hobby in this episode and she was a cute blonde).

Most episodes of TVD start with the brothers telling each other what the object of the episode will be (thus filling in the audience about what's up), but this time they actually had REAL news to share. Heartbreaking information.

While sure, Damon's brain was probably tingling with possibility now that Elena was back on the market, to his credit he DID offer to be a good brother and take Stefan out for a night on the town. But Stefan was NOT in the mood for those kinds of things because he knew that Elena had specifically cited Damon as the reason why she didn't want to be with Stefan. So yeah, Salvatores be fightin' now.

Meanwhile Mystic Falls High's star quarterback cannot lift a keg off a truck.

But a certain newborn vampire hunter CAN.

Oh Jeremy, quit showing off. JUST KIDDING FEEL FREE TO SHOW OFF WHENEVER.

So then Stefan roamed through the hospital checking everyone's medical records to decide which patient most deserved to be murdered and turned into a vampire and then re-murdered.

LOL! I will never get tired of the force-feeding of blood on this show. It's like JUST DON'T SWALLOW. You don't have to swallow! I am not trying to brag, but NOT swallowing a stranger's blood is one of my best skills. Like, seriously, try me. (DO NOT TRY ME)

Oh, did I mention it was time for the Miss Mystic Falls pageant? It hadn't happened since Season 1 when Caroline won it, so now she was organizing the whole event and also her personality returned to her more annoying Season 1 ways? It pains me to admit this, but my precious darling babygirl angel Caroline was kind of a B. this episode.

Fortunately when Caroline wasn't busy openly judging Elena, taking the side of Elena's EX, and also yelling at Gabby Douglas, her character was STILL awesome mostly due to the straight-up electric plotline with Klaus. I am not even kidding. I don't ship anybody on this show, but man did this particular series of scenes really get me:

I'm not talking about Caroline falling for a noted villain (which is what's happening here and why it's slightly disturbing that she'd be so bossy about Elena's romantic choices). The thing that got me was how much Klaus seemed eager to change FOR Caroline. Because she's that amazing. She's so amazing that a noted villain would actually TRY to win her over. You know? That's just old-fashioned romance right there. SORRY. So good. (Hi Klaus)

Then we met a new hybrid named Kim who looked like a slightly nicer Michelle Rodriguez, but she was still not very happy about breaking all the bones in her body a ton. Yup, Hayley's after-school hybrid mentorship program was in full swing!

Then Tyler came in and whined about not wanting to attend the beauty pageant being held IN HIS BACK YARD and hosted by his MOM and GIRLFRIEND. So that's when Hayley basically invited herself as his date and he pretended it wasn't the best idea.

Haha then Kim yelled at them for being annoying about it. I liked Kim immediately.

Then Jeremy offered to help Elena put on a necklace? It was very creepy in my opinion. It got even creepier when he tried to STRANGLE HER TO DEATH.

Except psych! It was just a dream:

And this was so lulzy I couldn't stand it: In his sleep Jeremy had WHITTLED intricate vampire-hunting stakes! Like what a WEIRD aspect to The Five, you know? I get the super-strength and killer instinct, but SLEEP-WHITTLING? Writers, you crazy for this one.

Here's Jeremy putting on a tux:

Here's Matt telling Jeremy about vampire hunters and reading from some xeroxes that he probably made at the public library just before taking a sink-bath there:

The gist was that the mythological vampire hunters are so consumed by their thirst for murdering vampires that once Jeremy starts he may never stop. Fair enough!

Then after a weird scene in which everybody argued over what kind of dress April should wear in the pageant as though April is a character that anybody cares about let alone forms thoughts about her outfits, Elena just straight-up told Damon why she dumped Stefan:

Then Professor Shane interrupted with some truly perfect timing. Then he went outside with Stefan and Damon was all "I'm onto you" and Shane was like "What?" and Damon was like, "I dunno." It was a great scene you should've seen it.

So then Stefan lured Jeremy into some basement (doesn't matter which one) and made him murder a baby vampire.

But he did anyway! The idea was that Klaus and Stefan REALLY wanted to see the full extent of Jeremy's tattoo (WHO DOESN'T?) but the other members of The Five are super hard to find in general, so risking Jeremy's vampire bloodthirst was just a risk they'd have to take.

Um, then it was time for the pageant and Klaus arrived and Caroline literally said that he looked "perfect." And this is how they looked at each other:

YOU KNOW? That's all I have to say about that.

Hayley was great in this episode, especially when she showed up with Tyler in a sorta-trampy dress and immediately started making fun of the entire charade by trying on the tiara. SUCH a Faye move. (Not gonna lie, my heart ached a tiny bit for TSC in this moment). But also Tyler and Hayley had some chemistry going too:

(Did you like my "backyard" joke? LIKE BUTTS! LOL #butts.)

Was this year's Miss Mystic Falls pageant especially chintzy? I don't know, it could just be that April sorta looked like Bristol Palin and also who cares? I don't mean to sound harsh but April as a character has been kind of a disaster so far. I get that we needed another human being in the mix (and someone who can remain in high school next year), but would it have killed the writers to give her a distinguishable personality and/or interesting inner life? Yes? Okay, nevermind then, I don't want people to be killed. Forget I said anything!

So then the gloves came off when Elena and Caroline started fighting over Elena's new ladyboner for Damon.

Obviously Caroline is a Stelena shipper and always has been, but I think this episode should've pointed out that Caroline spent a lot of Season 1 as Damon's perpetual rape victim? I know that sounds like harsh language but vampire compulsion is basically roofies, you guys, and Damon treated Caroline very badly for many months (which she of course remembered after turning). So this episode in a weird way tried to paint Caroline as a villain in this debate when she was actually totally justified. On the other hand, don't try and tell Elena who to love? That's like friendship 101. Anyway, I was kind of tired of seeing Caroline lose her temper (because who cares what Elena does) so I wanted both of them to hush. And I wasn't alone!

Klaus, a one thousand year old vampire, intervened in some teenage girl drama and actually looked good doing it. Caroline listened to him and even accepted his offer of a commiserative drink. (WAIT WHO IS THE SIRED ONE AGAIN? haha spoiler)

So yeah, goes without saying that increasing Jeremy's hatred against vampires was not a good plan on Stefan's part:

Live and learn, Stefan.

This scene was so cute I won't even ruin it with captions. Basically, Klaus was teasing Caroline by reading her application for the Miss Mystic Falls pageant from the previous year:

And she gave him TOTAL heart-eyes. In fact, she looked more vibrant and giggly than she had in MONTHS, which made it all the funnier when the camera cut to this:

Haha sorry but I laughed here. Tyler's a good guy, but that was a total soap opera-style reaction. (Don't you love how in TV shows characters can never have a private moment that won't be walked in on by the exact person it would hurt?) Anyway, my favorite thing about the dissolution of Tyler and Caroline's relationship was that it was supposed to be PRETENDING at first, but now they're genuinely breaking up. That's just an interesting way to go about it, in my opinion.

So then Damon outed himself as a vampire to Professor Shane:

In the process of not capitulating to Damon's threats, Shane confirmed that there were many layers of MacGuffins at play here: Jeremy's tattoo would lead to a map, which would lead to a box that could only be opened by Bonnie, which only then would cure Elena's vampirism. Ugh, that's at least four more episodes of MacGuffin' chasing right there.

Also, can I just say how hilarious it is that ANYBODY in Mystic Falls wouldn't automatically assume that Damon is a vampire? It's a town with a rich history of vampires, first of all. But he's also wealthy and stylish and unemployed? And I mean, just LOOK at him. Even in real life, where I am 100% confident vampires do not exist, I've been in the same room as Ian Somerhalder and I'm STILL not convinced he isn't an immortal supernatural creature of some kind. It's just a first-impressions type of thing. So yeah, sorry Damon, I'm not sure you're fooling anybody ever with the vampire stuff. Of course Professor Shane already knew.

April won Miss Mystic Falls, presumably via pity vote:

And then Jeremy showed up and he seemed pretty dead-set on murdering his sister! The whole scene was an emotional nightmare for them both, but here was the gist:

Yikes! He even stabbed her in the neck with a wooden thingy before Stefan could wrestle him off of her! I am not gonna lie, that seems like a tough situation, being a vampire but having your little bro be a vampire hunter. That's rough. Also rough? Having a five-inch wooden thingy pulled out of your neck by your Ex.

Shortly afterward there was this moment where Elena confirmed what we'd been suspecting: She may actually PREFER being a vampire now. (Which makes sense... I don't see Caroline or any of their other vampire friends racing for a cure.)

And I personally appreciated Elena calling Stefan out for once again trying to meddle in her life. You know, when Elena turned, that's what we all wished for right? Self-sufficiency? Elena being able to protect herself? But nothing changed: Everyone's still trying to save her all the time. This was a nice beat where it's like, actually, Elena is fine. She's fine. Leave her be! Life is full of mistakes and she needs to start making them.

In a scene that I found pretty lovely, Hayley and Tyler bonded over their werewolf experiences.

In what I imagine is the analogue to how when gay people go on first dates and inevitably discuss their coming out experiences, Hayley and Tyler discussed who they murdered to activate their werewolf genes. (Hayley got into a drunken speedboat accident and killed one of her friends, a phrase that sounds kinda funny except it wasn't really because poor Hayley!)

Elsewhere, Klaus finally answered a question that Caroline had posed to him earlier: Had he ever fantasized about becoming human again? In my opinion this would've been a fantastic opportunity for him to talk about how mortality would allow him to have a natural family, or how the fact that we're all going to die someday bonds us as a human community and allows us to feel empathy in a way that vampires can't. But instead he told some extremely dumb story about how hummingbirds fly around the Andes struggling to survive. Um, nice try but I think humanity holds more appeals than Andean hummingbirds. Anyway it always gives me a thrill to see Klaus being earnest, so it still worked on me. And we could tell by Caroline's face that she was pretty moved by it too.

SIIIIIGH. (In a good way.) But then LOL:

Tyler was listening in and reported back to Hayley that Klaus was saying "some B.S. about being human." Which seemed SLIGHTLY RACIST to me? I don't know.

OH, BIG NEWS: Elena moved out of the house and Matt moved in!

Aw, I am so happy for Matt. He truly deserved to live in a proper home again, and now he and Jeremy can do so many push-ups together! For his part Jeremy seemed pretty rattled by how he had tried to murder his sister earlier, but the fact that she moved out was probably a good idea.

What was NOT a good idea was that she moved into the home of her EX-BOYFRIEND and also BRAND-NEW BOYFRIEND. You know? Maybe sleep at Alaric's? Rent a studio somewhere? ANYTHING OTHER than staying with the Salvatores? Whoops, what am I, Caroline? Who am I to judge?

Oh, and another thing: Hayley is in league with Professor Shane.

Because Hayley is likable and so is Professor Shane, I'm not positive that they're actually villains. At the very least they don't want Klaus to have an army of hybrids. Fair enough! How sinister could the rest of their plan actually be though? Guys, these characters are going to college next year, so don't you get the vibe that Professor Shane is actually going to become a mentor-figure for them? Yeah, sorry, I just don't buy that either of these two are bad people.

Oh, okay, so are you ready for the GRAND FINALE MONTAGE? Two things happening: Elena and Damon slow danced their way past a truly alarmingly huge fireplace fire and right out of their clothes.

MEANWHILE Caroline and Stefan came to a shocking conclusion about Elena's vampirism:

ELENA IS SIRED TO DAMON!

AND THEN ELENA AND DAMON DID SO MUCH SEXXXXX!!!

Okay, now just to analyze this turn of events for a sec, the reason this finale was so controversial in the fandom was because Elena and Damon were FINALLY able to consummate their corner of the love triangle but then it felt like it had a HUGE ASTERISK by it, just like all the other times Elena and Damon have done romantic stuff. (Oh, it was just Katherine! Oh, Damon was just dying!) Like, does this romance count or not? So now there's this guttural yelping going on about how the writers just can't let Elena and Damon get their moment in the sun. But in my opinion WHAT EVEN IS siring except just being madly in love? You know? The hybrids don't all try and sex up Klaus, they just instinctively love him for setting them free from pain. Elena must've already had feelings for Damon before she turned (as regularly implied for three whole seasons now) for her to want to actually do a shirtless hug with him at this point. Anyway, I don't actually think siring is that big a deal in the context of this love triangle. I mean if you've ever been so in love with someone that you were borderline obsessed and would do anything for them, then YOU TOO have been sired. Anyway, for me the only annoying thing about this siring situation is that it threatens to turn Caroline into a full-time cockblock, and she deserves better than that. Like, please don't devote entire episodes to Caroline trying to "unsire" these two. Just let her and Klaus go on more dates thx.

Okay that's all SORRY. JUST MY OPINION. I'm conflicted but enjoyed this episode nonetheless. I am almost scared to see what you guys thought... But let's hear about it!

QUESTIONS:

... You okay?

... Hayley and Prof. Shane: Are they good or bad?

... Are you rooting for or against Caroline + Klaus?

... Jeremy and Matt: Who will be the inside spoon and who will be the outside spoon?

Damon was an ASSHOLE to Caroline in Season 1, but isn't the point that he's changed and that's why Elena loves him now? I thought the entire point of his, ya know, CHARACTER ARC was that he changed for ELENA

Shouldn't they put a spell on the property to keep Jeremy and all other "Five" hunters off the Salvatore property? What's the point of moving out if hunters can get to you any time they want. Another question, Why does Klaus even let Haylie stay around his Hybrids if he knows she's the reason why Tyler broke the bond? Why would Stephen think Elena would be okay with 12 people dying just so he could get her back again and put her back on Klaus's blood bank radar?

"I WANT 2 HANDLE UR JUNK SO MUCH". haha! the comments on the photos are just so good. matt is little spoon, jeremys growing into the big bad protector, he so got his back. stefan is too controlled. since he has to control himself 24/7, it seems like he has to control everything else too since hes king of control apparently. and does anyone else miss alaric? cant ghost-alaric come and swoop in once in awhile? i liked the scene last season when damon went to the cemetery and got krunk with dead-alaric. it was touching...thats it, im going to ship dalaric now...

Thank you, Price, for bringing up the whole Caroline-Damon date-rape issue. I totally agree, and I think it's a great point to mention. I LOVE Caroline so, yeah. People need to drop the tude against our girl! Especially considering that whole compulsion-sex thing probably happened about 6-months ago in the crazy timeline that TVD has.

Also, doesn't anyone else wish that Elena could be, I don't know, single? And not creepy-brain-washed into doing whatever Damon wants? Maybe it's just me, but I was hoping vampire-Elena would be stronger and would be there to protect her friends and family more. I guess I'd just like to see Elena step up into more of the hero role instead of always being whipped by these two guys, who, in a sense, kind of ruined her whole life. But then I guess the show wouldn't be interesting to the majority of people anymore. *le sigh*.

I started watching the series last week and just caught up (yes, I've been actually sick and not just bailing on RL). I am definitely a Dalena(Delena?) shipper because Stefan bores me to tears. I find him more boring than Elena, who is very much better now as a vampire. I don't want a cure, I want Damon and Elena finally having some fun - both together and on their own. And I want the other characters to let Elena finally be something else than whiny, sulky teenager. This sire thing can be good or bad.

I'm also still deciding on Hayley and Professor. Shane could be Silas or the cure could be Silas (a total ruse like the Actez curse or just a question of interpretation - Silas could "cure" vampires? (I'd rather say revert to human than cure)).

Caroline and Klaus is definitely another couple I would like to see. Tyler.. ugh.. he has been bearable after the curse triggering but I'm growing annoyed again. Klaus at least is the second best of the Originals (give me more Elijah).

Jeremy is surely in charge now, Matt can be the Alfred to Jeremy's Batman.

I love your recaps !

I have a question/theory, I'm sorry if anyone already thought about it.
Could it be that Prof. Shane and Hayley want to cure Klaus so they can kill/neutralize him without killing all of his descendants ? It must be something about the cure right ?
Reply
Flag
I thought about that too but that may be Shane's second priority. I strongly believe he's first priority is connected to Silas. Bring back one of the strongest warlocks of all time when the only and last original Hybris is permanently killed seems like a good idea, at least from his perspective.

I completely forgot about Silas, thank you for the reminder !

I don't know where some of you get that Stefan doesn't accept Elena as she is, he just wants to help her and even from the start we got the sense that Elena was never going to want to be a vampire, that she now does or have grown to accept is rather lame considering they have said multiple times that vampirism doesn't change a personality only magnifies emotions. The only reason I can see that she accepts being a vampire now is because of her sire bond with damon but at the same time she has genuine feelings for him (and Stefan for that matter).

They keep saying that it doesn't change your personality, and that Caroline grew more into herself or something like that, but from the outside Caroline seems completely different. Elena's change doesn't look half as big to me! I think she has been behaving the way she is expected to and now she is becoming more independent. During the Denver trip and in the frat dance she seemed to be enjoying herself until someone (Jeremy, Bonnie) reminded her of how she is supposed to be.
Nevertheless I don't think that Stefan doesn't accept her, I think he misses the way Elena was.
Reply
Flag
I also think Stefan misses her but that's the first reason he's helping her, not as I see it. It would be ridiculous to introduce Stefan as the typical boring, hero-ish type only to turn him to the opposite aside from his Ripper side.

Anyway, I fully agree that Elena as a character needs more independence without everyone judging her.

Firstly Love your recaps!!!!
Then some random thoughts I've just had (after almost a week) about the episode:
Damon and Elena basically danced without music right? (do they chose the music on the show, so that the lyrics would be of relevanse to what we see, or randomly?)
Stefan cannot accept Elena as a vampire, she accepted him as the Ripper. Cool..
What if she is not like that because she turned, but because of the sire bond. Then Stefan would be right.
Still, I don't think their problems were about Damon in these episodes. Elena has had feelings for Damon since the 2nd season, but always chose Stefan, I think the problem was that he can't understand her anymore and they drew more apart than tehy thought during his Ripper fase. And as they haven't really spoken about that it just won't get solved on its own.
I guess we'll see how everything plays out with the sire bond.
By the way, loved how Klaus intervened when the girls were arguing. Hihi!!!

Hahah I thought about the music as well! I think it depends on the importance of the scene. If it is just a regular scene at the grill I don't think the lyrics matter that much but if it is a scene like this one I think they try to find a song with lyrics that fit. Or it's just me as a fan trying to see something into it hahah! But the music on the Damon and Elena scenes (yes those are the one I notice the most, I wonder why... ;D) fits pretty good so far: "It is every thing you wanted, everything you don't", "I'm not giving up, I'm just giving in" and "Kiss me" are just some exaples. God sometimes I feel way to nerdy about these things, It is a good thing I have a place like this to discuss my nerdiness (is that a word?) beacause I don't think my friends would stand me if i didn't ;)

And also, good point about Elena accepting Stefan but him not accepting her!

The thing about the music though - when we first met Hayley, her and Tyler were saying 'Hello' and hugging and the song in the background kept singing "I belong with you, you belong with me, you're my sweetheart." Perpetually, like seven times in a row. The music was what made me go "Oh. So the Tyler/Caroline thing is pretty much done now". Long live Klaroline I guess.

This is the CW. I don't think they pick the music at all. I think they send the script to whatever record label they are a enslaved to and ask for whatever songs their lords deem appropriate to give them. The CW has been in the business of selling music since they were the WB and CD covers got recurring roles on Dawson's Creek.

Great Recap as always, this is my first post and i have to give it to you that ur recaps are great andd hillarious and is one of the things keeping hooked to this show

1. Not okay cuz the episode was solid but as a Delena fan i was disappointed with how they spoils the moment with the Sire bond reveal

2.Not sure but Hayley is definitely a good person and what ever she is scheming with Prof Shane will be for a good cause and as for Prof Shane he may be the Big Bad this season.

3. Love the Caroline Klaus relationship and hope it will be explored more in further episodes and not just a one tme thing

4. Don't Care much about the two

Great recap for a controversal and funny episode. I totally agree with you regarding the sire bond thing and could add that this plotline is full of holes but nevermind. I also don't think Hayley and Prof Shane are bad. I'm loving Jeremy and Matt bromance. As for Caroline I'd rather her to be staked..judgemental stelena bitch.

"As for Caroline I'd rather her to be staked..judgemental stelena bitch."

Are you serious with this? As a survivor of sexual assault, I'm kind of appalled by this reaction. Caroline was essentially RAPED by Damon, who, by the way, was the one who had turned her into a vampire. Why wouldn't she like Stefan? He was the one that helped her transition from human to vampire, not Damon. She has every right to be judgmental, but based on her past experiences with Damon, she is certainly NOT a bitch. Ugh.

What I'd like to see is Dr. Meredith walk up and say "Damon can't be her sire, I ran out of his blood AGES ago. That was Rebekah's or that geeky vampire from season 2 who had all the computers but was killed by Elijah. Ooh, now there's something I'd like to see, Elena sired by Elijah.

The swallow thing is easy, I don't think you need to swallow but rather as the blood touches your lips/tongue.

About the cure, I think it's an interesting story arc but I doubt the creators are going in the direction for Elena to take it, it will be far too easy for her. It will make such a twist if by accident it happens to be used on Klaus or Damon, two vampires who would probably kill themselves before becoming a weak human again. Maybe Katherine?

I wonder though, if Klaus would be forced fed (hehe) the cure and since he's the first in the bloodline of those that the show surrounds on, what will happen to them? Will they simply die or lose their vampirism or nothing?

I wish they would bring in other witches than Bonnie. Her grandmother was kick ass but the rest, ugh... Hopefully Qetsiyah wasn't in their bloodline but someone entirely different.

I would gladly agree with you about Elena & the cure, please let her stay a vampire where she can remotely take care of herself. But, she returned to being a human in the books and I think the writers have done a pretty good job of weaving the book plot points into the tv series. Even the whole Damon-sire thing had a footing in the books.

first of all f.ck "the cure" vampires exist for ages and the minute elena becomes a vampire there happens tp be a cure. BS! second of all why elena and damon romance should be a sired thingy. that is BS as well. keep it together writers.make damon happy for just 2 episodes. and also i can't pick between tyler and klaus.it's just so hard.

VD are starting to get extremely boring - like One Tree Hill only with vampires... If it weren't for Damon I would've quit watching ages ago. The only cool things left in that show are Damon, and the Klaus - Caroline romance

I know it's been said that this sire thing is real but I don't buy it! Right now I'm hoping they all think it's real for a few episodes so we have a sad Damon that has to reject Elena (girl you deserve it!), then it turns out that she wasn't sired after all. Because I don't like the so-called proofs that Caroline names. I don't care about Elena's feeding disorders but did she really kill the hunter who was a threat to all the people she loved and to herself, who had been holding her brother hostage and who had just tried to kill her just because Damon told her to? It felt to me like she got carried away there. And the dress issue? I thought it was about the love triangle, with the "blue is safe" but letting herself be convinced by Damon. Plus the minute he walks in she starts fixing her dress and playing with her hair, she hasn't been behaving like this around Damon until now. And why didn't she obey earlier this season when Damon told her to feed from a human, or to call Stefan?

By the way I totally agree with the people who said that Stefan is a terrible looser, Damon was so supportive all this time! He's certainly a jeallous ex!

And one more thing, where are Matt's parents? Is it ok in a small town for a teenager to move in with a younger teenager whose sister and former girlfriend has just moved out to live with his brand new boyfriend who is older and the brother of her brand new ex? Or did the violence scale made the people in Mystic Falls mind their own bussiness?

To anyone annoyed by this sire thing: Why is it so important to see Elena and Damon get hot and heavy? As much as I enjoy Damon as a character I love it when his plans are messed up in the details so he's all "damnit, I wish Alaric was here to drink with me."

Yeah, I feel for Damon, I think he thought Alaric was an genuine friend aside from Elena and Stefan. It would be cool if Damon could find a witch to spell him so he can see Alaric's ghost like Jemery can, they could at least talk. :P

Oh surprise, surprise, another magical yoke-a-majig that only a Bennet witch can solve. My arse! Are we really expected to believe that these Bennett witches are the most powerful witches ever, seeing as only their predecessors are involved in any sort of major witchcraft that directly impacts the people of Mystic Falls? I mean, if you just look at the current few generations, Grams was awesome, but Abby, she was worse than awful, and Bonnie is just as bad. I find it really hard to believe that any supernatural anyone couldn't have found some other family of witches to deal with. Unless of course the Bennetts are the Originals of witches, in which case hurry up and make Bonnie evil so she is a bearable character.

Side note: Caroline was quite terrible in this episode, however, I think under the circumstances, she can be forgiven? Another Miss Mystic Falls founding family nonsense random event thingy where something major happens in full view of the rest of the town and no one notices? Thats bound to make anyone crabby.
Klaroline FTW!

Yes! The second Shane said to Bonnie that "Silas is worse, trust me, because I'm Silas" I knew he was Silas ... Wait, he might not have said that last part. But he was giving off this weird immortality vibe. And when Damon had him by the throat he didn't look in the least bit worried. Completely nonchalant when threatened with death. A little TOO nonchalant. The kind of nonchalance that a handful of centuries walking (or being buried in) the earth can bring.

Honestly, I thought this would have been a more popular theory. I'm sure many others have had similar thoughts, but I've been reading quite a few comments on this forum and you're the first I've seen who has inferred Professor Shane is Silas. (They both start with "S". Coincidence?! Maybe. But probably not!)

(P.S. Bonnie pulling a Willow Season 6 would be awesome! *Sigh* They did witches right on Buffy.

God, Alyson Hannigan was so awesome in that role, with the scary black eyes and burning rage. Yay for flaying murderers! And Xander saving the world by talking her down. . . so epic! I don't know if he is Silas, or he's trying to resurrect Silas, but after this week, we definitely know he's bad news, practicing dark magic.

Totally called Shane as Silas as well. I feel like he's just standing in front of everyone else, waving his arms, yelling "Silas, right here!"

Well, Elena has been telling Caroline to do a lot ot stuff like how she should let her daddy go because it was his choice, blah blah and now it's Caroline's turn! You know, it's her turn to cockblock! Also, I totally agree with your points about siring. I thought it was pointless...It was there to make Stelena fans feel a bit better about Delena...

- YES. But because of non TVD related reasons.
- I don't care about them omg.
- Against.
- They'll take turns.

I also would like to add: Tyler was so hot in this episode.

1. I am so sick and tired of Elena that I entirely agree with Caroline. Not so much about the Stephan thing, but how Elena is acting and I used to really like Elena.

2. I think they might have what we would interpret as righteous motives, but Shane might be a no holds barred, damn the torpedoes, ends justify the means type, whereas we are going to see Hayley doubt and pull back more and more.

3. Ehhh...but the more they keep doing this, yes, because it is making Tyler be more of first season jerk Tyler, which will make me actively root against him and Hayley because even if she is on the bad side, no one deserves first season Tyler.

4. Funny...

JUST YOUR OPINION? I find you so bloody right about this whole sire bond stuff, I damn well do. BUT, it is something for the Stelena fans to hold onto which truly irritates me. Finally, FINALLY, we got some much well-deserved doze of Delena, and Caroline HAD to burst our pretty bubble. Well, firstly, being Caroline (even though she's Elena's "bestfriend") why all that bother with whether Elena's human or not? Secondly, HATE the fact that Stelena fans have it so incredibly, unfairly easy for themselves. I mean, the last episode and this one even PROVED what a self-centered little bastard Stefan really is? "Let's not pretend this is not the best day of your life" Well, to hell with how you feel, Stefan. Damon has ALWAYS been so supportive about you and Elena, so defeated and ditched TWICE by the girl(s) he's loved YET still acted like a loving brother! But well, Ladies and Gentlemen, we present to you Stefan Salvatore who's unfortunately not even half as bloody close to showing just a BIT of that support to his brother. Where is the good person in him all of a sudden? Talk about freaking pretense.

That sire bond did ruin things for me too. There was no need for this in my opinion. Elena had feelings for Damon long before she became a vampire. I hope they don't find that cure or if they do that she wouldn't take it. I like the new Elena she is a lot more interesting this way.

I really liked the episode.... I had to do a eye roll at the ending just because how they went about revealing the whole "sire bond" thing. Personally I was really disappointed in how annoying they made Caroline for half of the episode. She's one of my favorite characters and I just really didn't like the way they went about her disapproval of Damon and Elena. I agreed with you when you said they should have focused on the rape thing from season 1 as her motivator instead of what they had her doing. The writers kind of robbed her of an emotional and justifiable moment, in my opinion.

Personally, I'm not a shipper so I really try to look past most things having to do with the ships. So I really don't care who she ends up with. Elena is actually the most annoying character on the show so I'm still trying to figure out why she's so special that these two dudes are constantly after her and everyone is willing to sacrifice their lives and well-being for her.

And I had a thought about April... she seems really unimportant right now, but I have high hopes for her having a point the further into the season we get because of her connection to Professor Shane and the note her dad left her... So hopefully she's be slightly less boring to watch in the next couple of episodes. *fingers crossed*

Am I the only one who saw Delena sex being intercut with Atticus and Haley sex?
I'm team Delena and I didn't buy Caro's logic, so I refuse to believe in the sire bond. (although now that I see it was in the books I'll grudgingly admit it). What pisses me off about it, tho, is that the best triangles develop slowly and naturally, and so did this one. Yet Team Stelena is so desperate to grasp for any excuse for their side to win, that this is what they've come up with to f over both sides at the same time. We'll see how the story progresses, but I'm not super happy with the show for the first time ever.
I think Haley and Shane will be/are bad guys. I hope Alissa Diaz sticks around for awhile, but the hybrids appear to be this show's equivalent of ST red shirts, so. . .
I can see that Caroline is falling for Klaus, and on the one hand, I think that's kinda cool. OTOH, I'd rather see her with Stefan.
Matt will be the outside spoon.

I'm really disapointed... I think they could have postponed the sire thing so that we could enjoy the Delena scenes... I feel I've been robbed !!
Elena and Damon both looked really hot in this episode, I love the dress and haircut she's wearing!
After the episode I look at the books resume on the Internet and I must say that if the follow the main love triangle arc I would quit watching the show... in the books Elena is sired to Damon and chooses Stefan over him. It would make no sense in the TV show as it is obvious that vampire Elena works better with Damon.

I don't really care about Hayley/Prof Shane for the moment... she's not really likable and he's not interesting enough...

Klaus and Caroline are definitely cute together ! In this episode Klaus brought out the best in Caroline and they work well together.

After 3 seasons of filling the blanks it seems that Matt is going to endorse new responsibilities. I truly hope they will develop his character and make him be the new "Giles"!

I got an account to say I really liked this episode and the review.

I don't like how some people on here are attacking others over spelling and being a "grammar nazi" Really? This is a public posting comment section about a THE VAMPIRE DIARIES RECAP!! I really am taken back by the hostility. Yes, people *should* spell right. Yes, people *should* use proper punctuation. Get a grip is what I say.

This is a parody recap, nothing serious. (IN MY OPINION!).

I agree, I'm not from the us or any country that uses english as a first language and thankfully I know how to write and spell correctly, but it is not easy, because I don't think my thoughts in english so it is a little hard to express what I'm thinking and trying to say, and sometimes I feel like I wrote it all backwards honestly a have to read it several times to see if it makes any sense, and to bash on other people because of their spelling and grammar and not even asking where they are from is just rude and unfair.

Agreed! Especially when it's obvious the commenter's first language isn't English. They miss some vowels and make a few spelling mistakes, but we can still understand what they're trying to say. Which is damn impressive! I can't even order correctly in a French restaurant.

Is Prof. Shane "likable"? The guy claims to own "the world's first tombstone." (I mean, that's just dumb. Has anyone mentioned how dumb that is?) I don't want him to be the new Alaric. Besides, it seems like Matt is stepping up to be the new ruggedly handsome voice of reason on the show.

I know people are mad they cut the sex scene with the sire revelation because of shipping loyalties, but personally I just think it was a horrible artistic choice. Its seemed really cchoppy and messed up the flow of both scenes for me. I can't believe no one saw it didn't work before they aired it. If they'd shown the scenes seperately (in either order) I'd be happier right now.

Confused by all the hate from non-shippers. Did you guys totally miss the Jeremy becoming a badass plotline? That was awesome! Glass half-full, people.

Pierce, can you teach me how to use how to use all caps with perfect comedic timing? Or is it a gift you have to be BORN WITH? Yeah, no... I'm terrible at it.

In my opinion, when Elena was human she and Stephan were good for each other but now that she is a vampire she is more Damon's type. They make more sense now. Besides, Damon is smokin' hot! He has such a great smolder.

Caroline said siring is rare, but happens. Since we've never seen it before in these characters (and Damon sired Caroline), it seems like Elena's pre-existing romantic feelings for Damon is what has inspired the sire bond, not the other way around.

Katherine killed her, but it was Damon's blood.
Reply

I actually expect this bond to encourage some character development in Damon rather than damage their relationship. He has leverage with Elena right now, and not using that leverage will be proof of his feelings. He's been very open with the idea that he's never been interested in an Elena who does not act on her own feelings. The number of times he could have compelled her but didn't... I expect this to play out similarly. The bond is something they will have to work through as opposed to it working against them.

Damon sired Caroline. Damon sired Elena. Damon appears to sire all the ladies!

A sire bond doesn't happen with every vampire. That is why Caroline can Hate Damon so much. She isn't sired to him. And Damon isn't sired to Katherine because he has outright denied her. He just loved her before and that was amplified as a vamp. But he got over it. Elena is just part of one of the VERY RARE sire bonds.

I'm pretty sure Caroline was turned by Katherine (if that's what is meant by sired in this context).

Katherine killed Caroline, but it was Damon's blood in her system when she died... so it's still right that she was "sired" by Damon

Speaking of Katherine... If my above logic is correct (Elena's feelings for Damon inspired the sire bond), do we think Damon had a sire bond with Katherine?
