The White Shadow Star Ken Howard Dies at 71

Ken Howard, who starred as a high school basketball coach in the CBS drama The White Shadow, has died. He was 71. No cause of death was revealed.

The news was confirmed Wednesday by the Screen Actors Guild and American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA), of which Howard was the acting president. He was elected president of SAG in 2009 and oversaw the merger of SAG and AFTRA in 2012. In January, SAG-AFTRA denied that Howard was seriously ill.

Most will remember Howard for playing coach Ken Reeves in The White Shadow, a 1978 drama ahead of its time in that it looked at race relations through the lens of sports. Howard also appeared in Crossing JordanThe West Wing, and more recently on 30 Rock as Hank Cooper, the boss of Kabletown. In 2009, the actor took home an Emmy for his performance in HBO's Grey Gardens. Howard was also known for his stage work; in 1970, he won the Tony Award for best featured actor in a play for his performance in Robert Marasco’s Child’s Play.

Howard is survived by his wife, retired stuntwoman Linda Fetters Howard, and three stepchildren.

He also did a great job as Thomas Jefferson in 1776. But even all these years later, when I told my husband that Ken Howard died, he said, "The White Shadow?" We will always remember him from that show.

Not to forget his role as Garrett Boydston on "Dynasty" and it's spinoff "The Colbys"

Aww, he was such a powerful presence. Any time I hear or see "Jordan", I think of his voice. He played a lot of different roles well.
