This vs. That: Community or Happy Endings?

Hello and welcome to TV.com's newest (somewhat) regular feature, "This vs. That"! The concept is purposely simple: We pit two things against one another, and you vote on which one should win... in whatever context you choose.

Let's begin with something timely, shall we? It feels like we've spent this whole week talking about what's renewed, what's canceled, and what's still in between, so with two perennial TV.com favorites on Tim's list of 2013's biggest bubble shows, we ask you this:

Feel free to show your work in the comments.

Ed. note: We're planning to post new match-ups every few days to start; if there's a specific battle you'd like to see, send it via PM to TVcom_editorial, via Twitter to @tvdotcom, or via email to mailbag@tv.com.

Wow, this is a tough one. Happy Endings has been consistently good from the very beginning and is probably the closest we've seen to a replacement for Friends. Whereas Community is just genius... at least, it used to be. Before the current season I'd have said Community in a hearts beat, but now??? Both have a fantastic cast and both are very well written (Community WAS excellent, but now it's average-to-good) so I'm going to make a choice based on the probable longevity of each show. I honestly believe that Happy Endings has more quality seasons it in than Community. Without Dan Harmon Community just doesn't have that... erm... you know, that something. So, almost unbelievably, I'm going for Happy Endings.

Oh, hang on, screw it, Community rules. I live in hope that one day it will rise from the dredges of mediocrity to the dizzying heights of excellence it used to call home.

Taken as a whole, definitely Community. However, when judging just the last Harmon-free season, I'd side with Happy Endings.

I really, really like both of these shows. They're two of the smartest comedies on TV (even with the loss of Dan Harmon on Community), and I hate to see either of them go. That said, if I had to pick one to get renewed, I'd go with Community, simply because another network has already shown interest in Happy Endings if it gets canceled. I'm good with watching it on USA, so I could care less if it gets canceled on ABC. Community, on the other hand, would likely be gone forever if it got canceled, so I'm all about it staying put.

If we're comparing the show in its totality, Community will be the clear winner. But if we're talking about this season... Happy Endings has been very, very consistent.

So hard.

Community used to be a great show and now it's less than a shadow of its former self, not even worth watching anymore. Happy Endings has always been a pretty good show, nothing more and nothing less.

Happy Endings for me.

This is impossibly hard! These are the two shows I always vote for in polls! But in the end Community is the show I convinced everyone around me to watch two years ago and Happy Endings is the show I'm forcefully imploring them to watch today. Troy and Abed will forevaaah be among my very favorites, but Happy Endings has the strange and impressive ability to have all the characters be my favorite on the show at one time or another. Community was amazing, it will always, always, always be one of my all-time favorites, but these days it just keeps getting worse and Happy Endings keeps getting better. If the choice was between Happy Endings and "Dan Harmon-run Community" my choice might be different. Emphasis on might be. As it is, current Community is lackluster and Happy Endings in general is straight up excellent, so for me the latter emerges victorious. That being said, I love them both an unhealthy amount and will have an abnormal and disproportional reaction if either is cancelled. Honestly, there could be tears.

happy endings is getting better and better and it already started strong, there isn't a single episode so far that I didn't enjoy. community was unique and surprising and the kind of weird that gets you so excited that you want to hug your tv, but let's face the harsh truth: that's all gone now, isn't it? the show lost its heart. it still looks the same, but it feels empty and that makes me sad. so, considering that: happy endings all the way.

Happy Endings was unjustly destroyed by ABC once they decided to move it out of Wednesday. Out of the two, it was actually successful at one point and has only been hurting for a while so I have to say Happy Endings deserves to stay around.

I think NBC will bring back Community now that The Office has decided to end. All they have left on Thursday is Parks and Rec and maybe Go on, so they need another.

If you had asked me 2 seasons ago or even last season, I would have said (with some reservation and a somewhat guilty conscience) that Community was the winner, if only for it's ability to mix emotion and comedy better than any other tv show.

But this is this season, so I have to go with Happy Endings, for it's consistently strong and funny episodes, the chemistry between the cast and for not sacrificing it's identity to get to a broader audience, even in face of a probable cancellation.

For Example: Community vs. Lasagna

Winner: Community

I like them both but I'm picking Community. At least is Happy Endings gets cancelled it will get picked up by another network... Community... not so much :-/

All of the above? I wish that was an option, haha.

I chose Happy Endings because I feel it is stronger/funnier at this point. Community's first 3 seasons made it one of my favorite shows ever, but, minus Dan Harmon, season 4 has dropped off substantially, though it has rebounded in recent episodes. That said, Happy Endings week in and week out is one of if not the funniest show on TV.

Your senses are correct. I've commented on this article so often because I've been monitoring the number of votes for Community. Last time I checked, they were increasing at 2 votes per page refresh, so it's probably 2 desperate fans trying to make Community look like it's winning even though the comment section is full of people voting for Happy Endings.

I like that you have come up with this daft theory when the answer is below. It's been talked about on Tumblr and Twitter and every so often fans will come and vote a few times for it. If you don't like it, you could, y'know, do it yourself or organise the HE fans. But easier to whine, amirite?
Reply
Flag
Which one of my sentences implies I am whining? I'm merely speaking from observation, which may have become outdated over time, but still does not mean it wasn't true at one point. The number of votes for Community were rising at a rate of 2 votes per refresh, defeating the whole purpose of polling.

Also, the replies explaining it were posted *before* your comment, Columbo.
Flag
'...defeating the whole purpose of polling.'

...You mean voting? As..as peopl have been?

LOL no, Community usually does well in polls because while the Nielsen ratings are ridic, it has a huge online presence and we Greendale students always flock to the cause. We beat off TBBT last year. >:)

Hard for me to judge on this one.
I've not followed Community for the last season and a few episodes.
For me it's originality is over, and like the Simpsons it now feels like they are trying to force what used to come naturally.
On the other hand, while I still watch happy endings now and then, it was never a show I had to watch weekly.
I guess Happy endings wins a small victory for still being worth a watch every now and then.

Not to sound like a broken record, but Community hasn't been the same since DH left. Yes, they still have gimmick episodes every now and then, and they try, but watching Community now is a lot like watching a family member on life support. Yes, they're still technically alive, but are they really?

Community is a piece of garbage right now. Without Dan Harmon, it is not clever, nerdy or funny. I hate having to say, "it's a great show except for season 2 & 4." They should just end it and put it out of it's misery. Happy Endings has sunk significantly since its return but I am not in pain every time I watch like I am with this season of Community. This latest Community episode actually ruined things in previous episodes, at least Happy Endings doesn't sabotage itself. But if Community keeps going in this direction, eventually I might have to say "it's a bad show with only two good seasons", like so many of the shows nowadays. Thus, I chose Happy Endings. Rest in Peace Community.

A absolutely adore Community (if this season never happened)
But HE is so boring- i love the cast, i tried to watch it for their sake- i tried 5 times - and not once did i make it through an entire episode. Since i watch like 15 hours of tv a day- thats saying something...

seriously, I know what you mean. I managed a whole season and a half of TBBT but HE gets grating after 5 episodes.
And I surpass you! I watch about 18 hours a day, (ha), but seriously, I've actually watched aussie comedies off youtube that are better than HE. You just start skipping little minutes at a time, then 5 minute portions until you reach a point where its like "well, fuck... this is shitty"

both have sunk substantially in quality in my opinion. I chose happy endings however because community's s04e01 felt like a mockery of it's former self and I haven't been back since.

This comparison is an insult to all Community fans. You only need to watch about 3-5 episodes of HE and then you've basically seen the entire series. Modern Fam, TBBT... how is it that people are entertained by these half-assed gay/chubby man/black man/ jew man/indian man jokes? How can you laugh at the same joke for so many years?

As soon as I take over the world, comparing Community to shit, still not having watched Arrested Dev as yet, bad-talking anything on FX, not liking Hemlock Grove, liking/tolerating Elena... all these things will be punishable by firing squad. Just giving you guys a heads up.

Not a voice of the people, dude. A voice to tell the people what to do and what to watch, and to make sure they watch it properly too. A voice to keep you from watching Once Upon a time and Grimm. A voice to tell you that Hannibal is better than Scandal. A voice to argue against Elementary and CW.
Somebody seriously needs to step up Ra's al Ghul style and make a change or else in the end? Doom and despair and ten seasons of TVD

So, yeah. Arrogance covers it. I know most people get an ego boost from having an internet identity but this is ridiculous. Being a critic is fine; but you're not trying to make criticisms and discuss them, you're trying to directly control what people watch. How many episodes of TVD, Elementary, or Grimm have you even watched? I'm willing to bet that you're judging these series purely by their surface cosmetics. And for future reference, you pretty much shot you're credibility to hell by saying:

"A voice to tell the people what to do and what to watch, and to make sure they watch it properly too."

Yeah, I doubt that argument'd fly In a country where people place such a high value on their right to independence. (Assuming you're American)

I hvae watch every season of community and rewatch them sometime, but Happy endings is way too much boring to be a comedy. I have try to watch season one and after juste one season I get it... it's friends but with a very cute blonde girl! But after that... There is nothing to it... Black joke and gay jokes might be cool if your young and dont know life, but come on! This is very fast boring.... At least comunity try new stuff every episode and the painball episode is the best of all time tv episode!

This, this! Or wait, maybe That!

I'm voting for Happy Endings, and I'll explain why because I love both these shows dearly.

Community is the superior show by being smarter and having a tighter message, falling into less sitcom cliches. But the show's current season is repeating beats and moments from its past rather than creating new ones -- what characters have been introduced in season 4? None that I can think of. It's not trying to grow anymore, it's simply trying to get by on what it's done before. It's stuck in a rut, and without a solid showrunner it's directionless. Finally, it's basically come to an end naturally by having characters talking about graduation, it's run its course and will need to force a reason to return.

Happy Endings, meanwhile, is a lot of fun and has a ton of laughs at a rapid-fire pace. It's smart about being dumb, it's comfortable in its roles while still allowing freedom for new characters and new situations that feel organic. It doesn't rely on gimmicks to move episodes along, and it doesn't feel like it's running out of gas, there's more room for it to grow and continue along.
