This vs. That: The Dowager Countess or the Queen of Thorns?

Welcome, ladies and gentlemen, to the latest round of TV.com's "This vs. That," where we pit two things against one another and you vote on which one should win... in whatever context you choose

In one corner, we have Game of Thrones' Lady Olenna Redwyne Tyrell, a.k.a. the Queen of Thorns. This feisty old lady (played by Dame Diana Rigg) is quick with a zinger, has been known to rock period headgear, and is quite the schemer!

And in the other corner, we have Downton Abbey's Violet Crawley, the Dowager Countess of Grantham. This feisty old lady (played by Dame Maggie Smith) is ALSO quick with a zinger, has been known to rock period headgear, and is quite the schemer!

But who should reign supreme? That, friends, is for you to decide...

Feel free to show your work in the comments!

Ed. note: We're planning to post new match-ups every few days; if there's a specific battle you'd like to see, send it via PM to TVcom_editorial, via Twitter to @tvdotcom, or via email to mailbag@tv.com. (And thanks to those of you who've already submitted ideas!)

No contest. Maggie Smith rules.

How do you guys come up with these comparisons, really? Not to give out spoilers but Olenna, dudes. Olenna. You can't compare her to Lady Crawley. That's like comparing a wolf to a really feisty pomeranian.

Why are you guys doing this? HE vs Community, now this? What next, Iron Man vs Batman? Mufasa vs Climate Change?

I'd have to vote for Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham. She has been instrumental at changing the minds of both Royalty and the military, let alone officialdom in all manner of areas to get what she feels fit. And has been seen on the ropes many a time, only to come back a winner along with her verbal foot squarley up some untrustworthy fools' britches!
Whereas Lady Olenna has demonstrated having guile and an acidic wit but has also yielded in bargaining to get things moving, as opposed to play a longer game. Both Varys and Tyrian came off rather well. And to make such a homophobic comment about her kin showed weakness and poor bargaining tactics. It makes little sense to suggest to your counterpart at the table that you hold disdain for gay men and then accuse them of it. Add that to the incest jibes and you'd be lucky not to be the first woman on the wall! All hardly conducive of getting an out an out warrior to acquiesce on anything.
Olenna's impatience and all to quick of tongue, albeit from age or whatever, makes her the weaker player. I think Cersei saw herself in Olenna the other week and it gave even her pause toward seeing her futures' end.

As did I. I like the Queen of Thorns and haven't gotten around to watching Downton Abbey but Maggie Smith is brilliant.

Well, Dowager Countess has been known to stand tall and fight like a cat even when things were going down for her family. So far we've only seen Queen of Thorns when she's up and mighty. But I agree. Damn tough choice.

I must just be the only person on earth who thinks these shows are ridiculously over-hyped. :P

That bodes well for people in general then, because these shows could never be overhyped. They are both master class level on acting and story telling

Well I'd definitely take Game of Thrones over Downton, that's for sure.

Don't watch either, but love Maggie Smith. The woman is amazing.

I voted for Violet Crawley, she behaves like a proper lady or at least fakes it well enough, whereas Lady Olenna can be somewhat openly vulgar ("Sword swallower, through and through." comes to mind)

No question: Lady Olenna!

The Dowager Countess is sassy and all, but girl has it easy. She rode out WWI in a fecking mansion. The closest she came to adversity was when faithful servant William died, or when Cousin Matthew lost his penis in the war. Maybe she can't vote, but she also isn't likely to get beheaded over snarking on some duke's lovelife.

Lady Olenna keeps her entire useless family in power and alive by her wits alone, in a society with much harsher penalties for strong, opinionated women, or women who are in the wrong place/family at the wrong time, or just women in general. The Queen of BAMF rocks my face off.

I don't watch Downton Abbey so it'd be unfair for to me to vote based on their characters.

So I'm again going with physical attraction!

Unfortunately, I don't find either attractive as grannies. Yes, I sexually discriminate against old people.

So I'm gonna Google em and choose two black and white photos of both when they were young:

Maggie Smith

Diana Rigg

Hubba hubba. Woof woof. Maybe black and white photos make every women look good. I think I'll go with Diana Rigg on this one.

Rigg IS a Bond girl after all.

I'm sure you meant to say "Rigg IS Mrs. Peel after all." Mrs. Peel as The Queen of Sin in the US-censored episode, A Touch of Brimstone: http://theavengers.tv/forever/images/queenofsin.jpg
Yowza! Her turn as Tracy in OHMSS simply doesn't hold a candle.

I won't vote because I've never watched Downton Abbey (although Rose Leslie who plays Ygritte being in the first season kind of makes me want to) but I think my vote would go to Olenna anyway.

They could be sisters! But I still can not compare, the wolds they live in are too different!

Violet Crawley! She couldn't take anyone in a physical fight, I don't think. But she'll whip anyone's butt at subtle jabs any day.

Much as I love the dowager. she has a soft side. I get the feeling that the Queen of Thorns is far more ruthless. In addition - I hate to say it, but her wit is just a bit sharper. I can't se the dowager holding her own against Tyrion....

Oh my god, I cannot possibly choose between these two awesome ladies!

In a brawl? or in a spar of words?
Queen of Thorns doesn't look to be above throwing dirt in your eye before you even know you're in a fight. verbally and physically.

Got to go with the Queen of Thorns, but I'd love to seem the actually be a room together to be sure.

Umm..I'd have to say The Queen of Thorns :) I mean, Violet Crawley is awesome but we have yet to see her release all her snarkiness to THEIR king (king's hand, whatever lol)

Lady O knows her politics and Lady C knows her Medieval Manners, so really there is no comparison.

When I read the books I always thought the Queen of Thorns was the Westerosi Violet Crawley, so really, both it is.

Well that would be Maggie, remember that Diana Rigg was certainly (one of) the first woman to practice martial arts (as Mrs Peel) in the western world.

Vulture made a quip-for-quip video that's worth watching... though we'd love to see it updated with some of Lady Olenna's lines from Sunday's episode of GoT!

When/how you send it in? This one's been on our list since we came up with the idea for the whole feature! Let's just say "great minds," shall we?

I'll go with great minds, but I mentioned this in the GoT review comments about 16 hours ago, so it's just serendipity.
