This vs. That: The Shield or The Wire?

Welcome to the latest round of TV.com's "This vs. That," where we pit two things against one another and you vote on which one should win... in whatever context you choose. Our newest match-up features another pair of classics that—between our ongoing "best TV pilot of the last 15 years" bracket, the impending series finale of Breaking Bad, and the recent debuts of a couple serialized cop shows that want to be more than just cop shows—have been front-of-mind lately. So as we head into the weekend, we have but one (not-so-)simple question:

Show your work in the comments!

The Wire is an amazing series. It is probably a little better as far as plot development and social commentary but, The Shield is definitely way more entertaining. It is a full on intense ride like no other. Also, I think it is more consistent. The Wire had moments that seemed to linger and go nowhere. It had these side stories that were just not interesting. The newspaper story line from season 5 mainly. Actually Season 5 as a whole isn't great. I do love The Wire but, It certainly is not the TV bible people make it out to be. It had flaws and completely unrealistic elements just like every other show out there. There are actually a handful of shows that are on it's level or better. It would be in my top 5, But not number one. These days, There is so much quality television. Holding on to one show as a favorite is kind of ridiculous unless you see everything that is out there. Because there is so much to rival everything that has come before it. I love The Wire but I think people really need to open up to the fact that there is so much great television that is on it's level. I feel like it has almost just become the default and cool answer to "what is the best series of all time?" Even though there are an ungodly amount of TV series that rival it in all aspects of quality. But yes, The Shield takes it for me. Simply because of how involving it is at every moment. Sure, The Wire made a lot of grand statements about society and institutions but, The Shield kept me on the edge of my seat every single episode. Entertainment at it's absolute best.

I would like to appreciate you all being fairly respectful of opinions. Most comment sections would have people calling eachother retards or dumbasses etc... so yeah. Anyway I prefer the wire.

its ironic how the shield got more votes but everyone who tok time to write a well thought out comment liked the wire. Just as the wire never got good ratinsg because of its detailed plot which built upon the previous seasons.

Both shows pushed the envelope at the times they were aired. I think the wire had a cinematic quality to it that few shows have even to this day. Not everyone can appreciate the slow burn storytelling but i can. Similar to breaking bad in that respect. I enjoyed every season of the shield and the show has launched a ton of careers. The shield really wasn't afraid to cross the line. And for me it is infinitely watchable. I can't say the same for The Wire as second season was a letdown compared to the rest of the series I give the shield a slight edge over the wire because of that. If not for that it would be the other way around. It is apples and oranges but I like apples slightly better

The only real similarities were that they were cop shows at their cores. Beyond that its like apples and oranges. The Shield was a fantastic show and some unforgettable scenes and episodes but the Wire is just a superior story to watch and experience.

this is a good comparison as both shows differed from the stereotypical format of most cop shows. The shield is based on the high pace at which the show maintained througout the series while The Wire is slow at building the story gradually till the end. The wire wins hands down for being a masterpiece in every department.

OK this is how I see it. 'The Shield' was just a cop show albeit a great one, but 'The Wire' may have been centred around law n order but it documented so much more.
'The Wire' was overwhelming because it was so believable - there was little reliance on story lines unlikely to be encountered outside a Hollywood script, 'The Shield' depended on all the standard cliches of commercial TV, ridiculous coincidence, comic book style escapades (taking down the 'albanian money train' for example), 'flesh wounds' et al, contrived dramas telling us of law enforcement who are continuously involved in investigating situations where they have a personal stake, ie family & friends are either the victims or the protagonists. Just doesn't happen in the real world -well much less frequently.

But the biggest difference between the two was that 'The Shield' presumed there was somewhere, a world free from policking, incompetence & corruption. Vic and his mates were 'abnormal' - this was reinforced at the end when 'the feds' treat Vic with approbation once they learned the true nature of that sociopath.
On the other hand 'The Wire' operated from the opposite assumption, the one many now see to be reality,it showed that contemporary society is governed by failed institutions, Law Enforcement, the courts local government & the news media are corrupt, incompetent organisations where things get done after so much politicking, that the original intent of the action, even if started with the best of motives, gets grossly perverted.
The Wire portrayed the destruction of society's institutions well, it showed us how urban communities were destroyed by so called 'economic rationalism' which destroyed once cherished goals of full employment and a fair days pay for a fair day's work, along with the notion of citizens choosing to act out of a duty of public service.

It portrayed that decline so well, now a decade later, the best TV shows don't waste time trying to do the same, the destruction has happened, ones such as 'The Bridge' proceed upon the basis that the institutions are already failures, no point in redrawing the same portrait, instead they show us humans good & bad, who try to do the best they can operating in a world of systemic failure & corruption.

This is a great discussion ... best "This or That" I've come across yet. But, damn, how will I find the time for another 5 or 7 season marathon? I guess it'll be The Shield since I've already seen The Wire complete, twice over.

I'm loving reading all this and there are some great comments both ways. What I will say to start...is that it's a slightly unfair comparison. A more fair or apt comparison would be between the Shield and say,Southland. Even concerning this, Southland even, is far broader in scope, focusing more on the LAPD at large whereas The Shield was based on Strikeforce, Sutters fictional representation of the notorious Rampart division, eventually shut down in real life due to corruption and God knows what else. The Wire on the other hand was just SO much more than just a cop show. Put crudely, The Shield is a Cop show and The Wire is a Cops n' Robbers show. I don't know if any show can honestly match the sheer depth and scope of The Wire. Certainly in terms of characterisation no show has even come close, either before or since. The sheer depth of the story and myriad of different characters still amazes me and overall is a monumental achievement.
With that in mind it's surely Gotta Be The Wire. I think quite simply The Wire is The greatest TV show ever made and The Shield is The greatest cop show ever made. Both I feel need to be fairly judged on what they set out to do and in that instance BOTH succeded unbelievably well. Whatever 'Poll' renders a winner, whether on here or anywhere else...certainly doesn't take anything away from the other. BOTH of these shows together belong together in the same bracket of being amongst the greatest shows of all time...regardless of genre.
That being said, I definitely agree with the other comments that, in terms of rewatchability, The Shield is more immediate in terms of getting into it, whereas THe Wire is probably best viewed a Season at a time as it can be more of a slow burn.

So I haven't watched either of these shows, thinking that they were both basically police procedurals. Having learnt a lot more about television online over the past couple of years though I know that both these shows are both considered some of the best television series of all time.

yea watch both, but understand when you're watching the wire, you have to watch the whole season. you can't watch just a couple of episodes because the way the story plays out, it will leave you bored, disappointed or confused. you have to watch a whole season to get the big picture. the shield has storylines that play out over the course of a season, but it also has new challenges and dilemmas every episode. the shield is about the guys who kick down doors to apprehend criminals. the wire is about the guys who set up surveillance to topple criminal enterprises. the wire is the shown from the viewpoint of the cops and the criminals. in the shield the main cops ARE criminals.

The Wire all the way...because when you watched it, it was like watching real life before your eyes. Unlike The Shield, which depended primarily on one central character, The Wire had an ensemble that all shined. With The Shield, which was a very good show, I can barely remember the names of the major characters except Vic Mackey. If you ask me to name some of The Wire characters, names like Stringer Bell, Omar, Avon Barksdale, Bunk, Bubbles, Lester Freamon, McNulty, Marlo, Prez, just starts falling out my mouth without a second thought. How we first met them; how some of them died are still remembered today by me. The Wire is a timeless gem which was so underrated and unappreciated. I have yet to see another series that has come close to writing and acting that was on The Wire. The Shield was a good show, but for me...it can't even compete with The Wire.

The "fuck" scene, episode 4. Five minutes of forensic police work during which not a single utterance without the word "fuck" in it was made. Etymologists study this as a brilliant example of the diversity and subtlety of the meaning in the "F" word. An instant classic. Nothing The Shield did ever came close.

Both great shows but The Wire had a sense of authenticity that The Shield couldn't match. I simply can't imagine how The Wire could have been any better. The Shield had more than a few "gotcha" moments which, while exciting, reminded me that I was watching a TV show created by writers trying to manipulate my emotions. There's nothing really wrong with that, but The Wire sucked you right in and never let loose for a moment. It had an almost organic quality that made you forget that it was written, produced, acted, and directed ... and not a peephole into some alternate reality.

As for acting, Chiklis was great but Dominic West WAS McNulty. And The Wire's supporting cast, from Idris Elba to "Snoop" Pearson were phenomenal.

It will probably be some time before a show as good as The Wire, in all aspects, arises again. But I am looking forward to it.

This is an oh so hard decision to make. Two of the redefining cop shows of the past decade and even beyond. But I have to go with the Wire. McNulty trumps Mackey I guess. And Bunk definitely trumps Shane and Ronnie.

I'm not arguing that the shield is not a very good series. It is a show about Vic Mackey and he is a great character, but there is still no comparison between the two.
The wire is the greatest achievement in television. It's not about the cops, or the drug dealers. It's not about JImmy Mcnutty, or Omar Little. It's about the city. It his on every major aspect of the politics, socio economics, corruption, life, and humanity. It is about everything and it masks itself as a TV show. It is the most organic thing ever commited to film.
I understand the argument that the 5th season is the weekest but I think that has a lot to do with coming off the high of season 4 and less to do with the season itself. Taken as a whole the wire will stand as the greatest show of all time no matter what the future holds. Others should aspire to the levels it reached but they will always fall short

The Wire is a more important show overall... but The Shield is a more entertaining television show.

The first one is grounded in reality and will be see by many - if it's not already - as a pretty accurate description of the drug war in the beginning of the 21st century; the second one is completely implausible, but dramatically more effective, which makes it a much more enjoyable watch.

Seriously, those are two great shows - I own both series boxsets, and they are right next to the one for "Homicide" on my shelves (more accurately, my floor, cause those babies are too huge for any libraries!) So whichever you watch, you can't go wrong.

I agree 100% and was going to write the exact same line but decided to reply to your comment. The line I am referring to in your comment is "The Wire is a more important show overall but The Shield is the more entertaining show" The Shield definitely entertained me more but the Wire was more realistic and still very very good. I don't like The Wire as much as most do though. Quite a few people saying it was the best show ever. There have been quite a few shows I liked more including Dexter, Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Boardwalk Empire. Homeland is right up there too. Again those shows entertain me more but The Wire is more true to reality of course. They are all good in their own way, its really hard to compare most of them. I guess I enjoy the shock value and intensity a bit more that you get in almost every episode of the shows I mentioned. I just love great TV though. I watch way way too much of it being retired due to a back disability and having absolutely nothing to do in the MI. winter. I never had watched The Wire until just recently. Next 3 on my list to watch that I haven't seen are Game of Thrones, Spartacus, and Oz. I have seen a few episodes of Weeds but will probably watch that also from start to finish. I like that I haven't seen a few of the really good shows on cable. I really enjoy watching a marathon of 1 show for a few days.

Just wanted to say I loved your comment. I've not seen either of these much praised shows, but I read through majority of the comments to get a fell of what people thought and I think you summed up what everyone has said perfectly.

While I'm probably going to watch both shows eventually, The Wire seems to be considered a better show artistically, but The Shield seems to be better entertainment for the majority, so I think I'll enjoy that more.

I feel similarly to most on this. Though I was never confused by The Wire and I did enjoy watching it, it's jus the hype around the show was so much bigger than the show itself. I kicked preferred its origin, The Corner and wishes they would have just left it alone.

Whereas The Shield was wicked from beginning to end. When Forest Whitaker joined... Greatest thing ever!!!! And The Shield had the best series finale of any show I've ever seen. Brava! That was the best way for things to end for everyone.

The Wire was okay, but ill never hype it up. The Shield goes down in history as one of the greats!

Great finale for sure. However I would still praise the finales of six feet under, angel (for the finale less for the show overall) and the sopranos as better than the shield. The shield may be more entertaining to some, it's a matter of preference I guess, but the wire achieved things other shows are scared to even try for. I gotta go with the wire on this one.

Six Feet Under's finale was beautiful, I loved it and I watch the final 15 minutes all the time lol.

I hated The Sopranos finale. What a piece of shit. I actually didn't love the Sopranos at all. Though I watched it in its entirety I never felt the same way about it that I do most of my beloved shows. But I've never been a fan of the Italian mob thing, so that's likely why. I find the Russian/Ukrainian mob and Irish mob far more interesting.

The Wires ending was good in regards to reality. In real life stories don't end and come to some kind of pleasing close. Life goes on as normal. And in the hood, things really do go in cycles. Ppl have the time, then young ones come up in their place. So that was good. But I loved that with The Shield, everyone got their just desserts :)

The Shield, definitely. I could never understand the buzz around The Wire. I tried to watch it after hearing so much about it, but couldn't get past episode two. I thought it was too confusing and boring... Maybe I wasn't intelligent enough to get it? Or maybe not the show for me?

The Shield was great: funny how the Strike Team would try to fix one thing, and end up in a bigger shit everytime. And most of the time, it was all because of Shane!

Hi Grazzy,

I completely understand as it is a bit of a slog to get through the 1st few episodes. I was underwhelmed at the start, but a friend told be to persevere. I think it was halfway through episode 5 when it finally clicked and I really enjoyed it from there. I am glad i stuck with it, as the characters and stories were so rich, but it was challenging to get through it all. Season 3 and 4 were highlights.

The Shield was awesome too in a different way. It was certainly more immediately accessible than the Wire.

I usually give a show a three-episode test: if I'm not interested enough by episode 3, I give up. I should've persevered, then? The Wire seemed to be such a beloved show that I always wondered why I didn't like it. Could so many people be wrong, then? I might give it another try when I'm on vacation and have time to spare.

I can understand, perfectly, why someone would choose The Shield over The Wire but it's not about which show was better. The Shield was more accessible, more traditionally potted for emotional highs and lows, more faithful to its purpose to entertain. The Wire was a work of art, completely free from the traditional strictures of TV, an experiment which succeeded despite the huge odds against it.

Sometimes I want Mozart. Some times I want The Troggs. Not that the gap was THAT great between these two shows, but it was of the same kind.

I guess shows can give you different kind of rewards: emotional, intelectual, entertaintment ones. And many times it's about connecting with the story or a character, which didn't happen to me and The Wire. I was told to persevere, so I might give it another shot in the future.

I watched a lot of the wire then I got confused and stopped, so I have to start from the beginning one of these days. But I tell everyone I know to watch The Shield. I just like how two events drove the entire series. One happened at the end of the pilot and the other in season 2. It just blew my mind. I also think The Shield has the gold standard for series finales. You knew Vic was going to get what was coming to him, but you didn't know how. Shawn Ryan picked the perfect punishment and I am still in awe of how it all went down. Plus, The Shield had Walton Goggins.

I don't know about that. I remember when I watched the 3rd season at the time, it seemed like a step down from the previous two, and part of that was because they milked the hell out of the money train story. The Shield's weakest season was the 6th, which was the definition of a transitional season. I don't agree, but a lot of people seem to think season 4 was the show's low point. The Shield was an amazing show no doubt, but it did run into some issues at certain places. The Wire's only real step down was it's last season, but even that was great.
