Tim Russert, host of NBC's Meet the Press, passed away unexpectedly today in Washington, DC, reports The New York Times. Russert had just returned from vacationing in Italy with his family and was at work at the time. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack.
Russert, 58, had been host of the well-respected weekly news program since 1991, interviewing luminaries from all branches of the political world. He is widely considered to be one of the top political journalists in the world today, not backing down from asking his subjects the tough questions.
He previously served as press secretary for New York Governor Mario Cuomo before moving on to his current career.
NBC news anchor Tom Brokaw broke the news this afternoon live on the air.

rest in peace
I always enjoyed watching Meet The Press, I am not one to watch these type of programs, but Tim Russert made it easy, also I learn so much about the way things work. I send my prayers and thoughts to his family, and I am sure his son will take after his fathers steps, he looks like a strong smart young man. Tim should be proud of him.
I was so shocked, I actually heard the news on rival network CBS. I remember watching him on Meet The Press, he'll surely be missed. Rest In Peace Tim.

Rest in Peace
I always enjoyed watching him on Meet The Press. He will be missed. R.I.P
brod1337 it's too soon for that kind of talk. I used to watch Tim Russet all the time for his appearances on the Today Show and occasionally on Meet the Press. He never seemed to have a bias or favor any political side, he just told the news and that's how the news should be told.
brod1337- I suggest you take your pseudo intellectual 2 cent medical advice elsewhere. Unless you are a physician yourself, or Russert's own physician, I'd advise you to just shut up. This guy wasn't just some statistic for you to start lecturing on.Insensitivity has a limit.
So sad. It was too soon. 'Meet the Press' was the only serious, hard-hitting news program worth watching.
"Its funny last week he was alive on tv looking healty and this week hes gone."If the pictures I've seen are any indication, Tim Russert was anything but healthy. What may be 'healthy' to Americans is obese to the rest of the world. There is no doubt in my mind Tim Russert would not have had a heart attack if he had a healthy amount of body fat (8-15%).
life just sucks..and as heidi Klum says...sometimes you are in ...sometimes you are out...RIP TIM...
RIP. Its funny last week he was alive on tv looking healty and this week hes gone. Its crazy how life is.

He will be truly missed.superb newsman.
A huge loss for the media industry and the world as a whole. Russert was always a truly fair professional and a gentlemen with his guests.
I never watched his show but I was stunned like eveyone else heard he suddenly died. He will be truly missed.
the statement is incorrect, he did not die from a heart attack but rather a coronary embolism.
"Tim Russert, the Washington bureau chief of NBC News and the
host of the program "Meet the Press," has died of a coronary
embolism at the age of 58, NBC has confirmed." - NY Times
I never watched his show(cant get it where I am) but I recognized who it was.Another loss. :-(
Was all ready to watch him later this morning "Sunday morning" in Australia. Stumbled on the news here just now. Always got a balanced truthful position. One of the best political commentators in my lifetime and he was a yank. Wow. He will be missed RIP
"crlewis" while you go and check on where you misplaced your spelling why don't you also check on where you lost your sense of decency?Anyway I think American journalism will further suffer from losing one of its more discerning members. My condolences to his family.
R.I.P
Wow... this was unexpected.
Sadly I didn't even know who he was until now.:(
:( I for one will miss his political presence. I am one of a few TV.commers that had "The Tim Russert Show" listed as a favorite. I also petitioned the staff here to add this show in the first place. Sunday mornings won't be the same.
R.I.P
This is extremely sad, Tim Russert will be missed!
He will be missed.
I will miss his fairness, tenacity and exuberance. If its Sunday, its Meet the Press. But it just won't be the same.
R.I.P. You will be missed.
The fact he's dead and Bill O'Reilly, Glenn Beck, and the terrorist-fist-jab-offs at Fox still take breath is proof there is no "God."
RIP
He was a great man. I feel for his family. I hope they can find the streghth to go on. R.I.P., Tim.
Wow...such a sudden and untimely death of a great interviewer. May he rest in peace.
I heard about it this afternoon. I feel bad for his family.
Now who's going to keep the ba$tards honest?
it was so unexpected, i just came home and turned the tv on seen that. it's so sad
What a terrible loss. He was well respected and trustworthy, which is so rare these days.
I will miss Tim's folksy and humorous approach to politics, especially when he appeared on Morning Joe. May God bless him.
that is really sad and shocking when it happens
R.I.P
