Just Kidding, Timeless Isn't Canceled After All

True to form for a time travel adventure show, the clock has been turned back and NBC's Timeless has been saved from cancelation.

The Eric Kripke/Shawn Ryan created hour-long drama was a fan favorite, though not a ratings powerhouse in its freshman season, leading to its cancelation on May 10. In a surprising reversal of fortune, TVGuide.com has learned that the show is instead coming back. It's a twist that can only point to the Timeless team (Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter and Malcolm Barrett) booting up the old time machine and changing history.

Or at the very least, the fan outcry -- and Timeless fans are passionate enough to form a small militia -- led to the show getting uncanceled, something that basically never happens.

Kripke confirmed the news on Twitter, stating that the 10-episode second season will air Summer, 2018:

This is particularly good news as the show wasn't just a case of the week time travel mystery show: with a dense mythology and some intricate character work, Timeless would have left many strands dangling if someone hadn't picked it up. That said, according to THR, Season 2 will instead embrace a more family friendly approach to traveling through history. So we'll see.

Either way, good thing NBC saw the light at the end of the (time) tunnel.

I don't think it was fan outcry that got the show renewed, after all that happens for any show that's cancelled. I think it was more negotiations of the producers suggesting a major overhaul of the show.

I don't think I would watch the second season during the fall because there's too much to watch. However, as a summer series it might be worthwhile.

But we've still got a full year before it airs which gives the network plenty of time to cancel it again. It also sounds like the 10 episode run will be it's last.

Great, even if it wad 'degraded' to a summer show, although I can name a lot of summer shows better than regular fall ones. I wish the same is done with Time After Time.

Oh, that's good and something of a surprise.

Obviously no details here, except the hilarious references to going back in time. But, I've read elsewhere that it's moving from 10 to 8, and going to be more "family-friendly". I don't actually remember this being particularly adult in any way, but OK, I'm not really sure what this means, if anything.

10 episodes is about right.

I'm glad the show got picked up for at least enough episodes to tell a good story, even if it is to just close out the series.A lot of shows don't get that chance. A lot get cancelled on cliff hangers with no resolution.

If the fans really did save this series than it shows how passionate and faithful fans of genre series like this can be. NBC should pay attention like they did here. No, they might not get the huge ratings that they want but if NBC can market the show right through targeted advertising and merchandise they might find that the fans that do tune in will come out to show support.

I'd be happy w/a summer season of 10 eps. It gives the writers a framework for beginning, middle and end, without having to worry about 'filler'. I'm finding I enjoy the shows with fewer eps more and more.

Ridiculous. It should have remained cancelled, as it is a rip off Spanish show El Ministerio del Tiempo, whose creators sued Timeless for literally asking for the scripts to buy them, then saying they were not buying them after all and then "creating" Timeless anyway, without paying rights. The lawsuit is still ongoing, and Timeless doesn't deserve a second season of a stolen idea.

You can't copyright concepts, only specifics. Otherwise Doctor Who could go after the whole lot of them.

Interesting. Thanks for that. However, secret government time travel show have been done before - Time Tunnel and Seven Days are two.

The star of that, Jonathan LaPaglia, seems to have disappeared on U.S. television. He's Australian and seems to have mostly been doing work there since then.

Well, serves me right to believe in news published on this site. Next time, take everything they say here with a grain of salt.

The cancellation was announced a lot of places. Even the cast thought they were cancelled and started thanking fans for watching on their respective twitters. They were as surprised as everyone that they got brought back after.

Interesting, but cool. Honestly 10 might not be enough but not like shows need 22 episodes these days. I think Agents of SHIELD has done the best option with their full season and split it into different arcs instead of stretching one story out for 22 episodes.

Yeah! However, 10 episodes, in the summer, isn't exactly a ringing endorsement. It's more like a "ok, we'll let you write an ending". I just hope when it comes back it can pick up some more views and continue on.

The production values for the show must be high given the need for different sets, locations, and costumes every episode. Having only 10 should keep the cost down. Also, maybe they feel 10 episodes would allow for tighter story telling or at least be enough to tell the story they need. I would have liked the customary 13 but at least it's not 6 like UK series have.
