TNT Renews Falling Skies for Season 3

I think we can universally agree that so far, Falling Skies' second season is better than its first. So I suppose this is good news, right? TNT has renewed the alien-invasion drama for Season 3, meaning we have at least more 10 more episodes' worth of hoping Jimmy gets resurrected!

The renewal comes despite Falling Skies losing some of its audience in Season 2. In Season 1, only one episode fell below four million viewers in its initial airing. Five episodes into Season 2, three episodes have come in under four million total viewers. However, Falling Skies is a hit among the DVR-ing crowd and adds diversity to a TNT lineup that's otherwise full of cops and lawyers.

Though the Steven Spielberg-produced series has struggled with its storytelling this season, the most recent episode, "Love and Other Courage," showed improvement, moving the plot forward with the introduction of an alien resistance force. Now if the writers can keep it up by developing the character of Ben and giving the show's female characters something to do other than take care of/make out with the male ones, we might be on to something!

Now that we know the series will be around for a while yet, what would you like to see out of Falling Skies going forward?

after watching the last two ep they need more personal story lines about the main characters, more what they were like before the invasion and what they went through to get where they are now, and we need more pope and tector

There is a lot of potential with this show. Unfortunately, the writers typically fall short of that potential. Science Fiction by its very nature includes some degree of suspension of reality. But, the writers take the easy way out. Point in case. Weaver. Interesting story line about the leg "infection". Developed it. Tension mounts...great stuff. Then. Splat. Weaver, near death, is able to receive an eight hour, high tech procedure in a hospital? It would have been better to just have them realize the infection responded to heat. No need to go through the whole heating up the blood thing. Because it crossed the line from interesting to just plain silly. Instead of getting caught up in the fantasy, I find myself rolling my eyes at their endless supply of luck, gas, stupid and slow enemy, food, pretty people and idiots.

I loved the part where Ben doesn't trust Karen. Then he falls for her line of bs? I am hoping that he's just appearing to fall for it. Because it's that kind of character inconsistency that gets in the way of making this a really great show. Love the actor who plays Ben this season. Kudos to him - he works well with what little they give him to work with.

Really tired of these people not moving past their naivette. In fact, they seem to have infected Weaver with it!! Why this show has chosen to glorify someone like Pope and give some sort of redemption to a character who treats women criminally is beyond me. Which brings up another annoying point - these characters are like bouncy balls...**boing* they're gone... *boing* they're back. Very contrived. Writers seem confused and lazy. Hope the main actors hang in there for the occasional great script.

TNT is going to let us get invested enough into Falling Skies then after the 3rd seasons they will probably pull the rug out from underneath us and cancell the show, that seems to be the trend with all TV shows(not named CSI) because the big four networks and all the cable outlets aren't willing to give new shows a chance to increase or firm up their fan bases. probably one the greatest TV show of all time(Senfield) would have NEVER made it because it ratings were terrible after 1+ season, same goes for Cheers and quite a few other big name shows.

How about adding more stars to this show?

I already stopped watching b/c they killed Ricky, and noone seemed to care, unlike Jimmy who I dont even remember until he died a few eps. back. Why does everyone like him so much other than the other kids on the show, especially the ones who were abducted and harnessed, saved only to fight for control of there minds.

I like this show, simple as that I dont love and I dont hate its just in the middle and thats only because of the writing for this show to get bigger they need to push the envelope a bit more and provide more of a sense of danger for the main cast they did good by killing Jimmy I just feel like they need more.

"10 more episodes' worth of hoping Jimmy gets resurrected"

It would be cool if Skitters can bring back people. Especially Jimmy because it might force the 2nd Mass to team up with Skitters. Might be interesting

The characters are too flat and 1 dimensional for my liking. Especially the lead when he has an opinion its usually right.

The story is interesting however.

I saw the first 3 episodes of season 2 and don't think i'll be tuning in again.

I always wondered if they counted DVR in the ratings. I DVR everything cause I rarely have time to sit down and watch tv for an hour at a time and when I do, it's not on their schedule. I like the show and am glad it's coming back but they do need to have more depth to the characters. One of the things I liked most in the first few episodes of season 1 was the relationships between Tom, Hal, Matt, and eventually Ben. It seems now as though those relationships have stagnated and none of the others were developed. What about seeing the kind of bond that forms between people who fight alongside each other? Even just everyday friendships are missing anything for the actors or audience to sink their teeth into.

DVR recordings are reported and sent to interested parties, but they still only really rely on the Nielson ratings. In other words, if you weren't selected as a Nielson viewer with a special box and everything... then you watching (or even recording) the show does nothing for the ratings.

While the networks and studios DO get DVR data from the cable companies... they tend to not care. Because as far as they're concerned you're either watching another network instead or want to watch it later and skip the commercials.

Alas this is on its way to join "V" and other Sci-Fi failures.

I'm not saying the show is great... but from a network standpoint I doubt 3 seasons is a failure. 3-5 seasons in the US is an OK run... especially on Cable.

6+ seasons for that for an American science fiction cable show is quite rare unless the show's name begins with the name "Star"

A lot of fiction, some soap, and very little science. It won't be the first time a prediction of mine bit the dust.

they canceled jericho for its low rating - about six million viewers ... FS has less than four million viewers this season. Ok this is TNT and not CBS. I WANT JERICHO BACK
Reply

Jericho season one was awesome, the show lost viewers becaue it went on a mid-season hiatus and never recovered the viewer. The fans let went on a "NUTS" campian to get the show back and CBS gave in for a 6 episode season to give it a finish. Jericho was one of the first real DVR HITS but that info wasn't counted towards the ratings which they do now. If your looking for a show to sit down and watch straight through from the pilot to the end Jericho would be one I would highly recommand. I hate it when the networks and cable don't give shows enough time to catch on with the viewers!!!!

Is Jericho really that good I think I wanna check it out now.

I'm happy for the renewal. Yeah...the writing isn't the best but I enjoy it having it as a summer show where not as many shows are on Sundays...and it's pretty entertaining and am enjoying this season a whole lot more then season 1 (better writing, less annoying dialog, better acting, useless children getting killed and fun to look at)

unless you got HBO type shows on your plan, all there is TNT and History and whatever ABC has in summer. lol AMC if no Dish.

I like the show, but I feel like my interest in it hasn't grown very much since the first few episodes. Other Sci-Fi shows like Fringe, Dollhouse, and Farscape made me feel more invested as they went along, but with Falling Skies, I sometimes forget about it by the time the next episode airs.

I basically agree.

American cable channels have started to go with the shorter 13 run seasons, but they less experienced at this format and still write/direct the shows like they are on a 22 episode per season pace.

If this were on the normal cycle, it would only be about the half way point through the first season now.

So, we won't know how good it is until at least episode 23, so I'm glad it's been renewed.

I was having the same feelings about Walking Dead, and then in the last 2 episodes of the recent series the pace picked up again, and I wanted more.

I agree that the writing has gotten better, but only to the extent that it couldn't have gotten any worse. It is a jump in the right direction, but I doubt its high enough to get the series out of the hole they put it in.

I'm pot committed, but this season seems to be up-and-down each episode. I'm glad to see we have the new plot-line with the Fifth-Column!
Reply

Please, don't call the Resistance Fifth Column because I start having gripes remembering the ridiculous writing of V. Falling Skies is no masterpiece, but it's far from the quality abyss V fell into.

I agree.

I'm absolutely surprised but I know that some people will be happy...

Tho, there is still plenty of time, until the next season, for the Network's exec. to change their mind.

I just saw a show, a brand new one, called Lilyhammer, starring Steve van Zandt. Check it out on imdb. It's a Nowegian show about a mob boss from NY in witness protection who choses to move to Norway in the middle of the winter. Really funny and well made.

And what this has to do with Falling Skies is that... (???)

SWEET , I'd like to see at least 13 episodes per season.

Yeah, I must be in the minority. I thought the episode was laughable. Just plain terrible. Just like the previous. The second and third episode remain for me the only good episodes. I'll stick with it though, because those occasional episodes are actually really really good.

I'm fine with this. I will continue to watch it.

The last episode was quite good. Despite the whole will they won't they stuff of Hal and Maggie. Ben, at least temporarily, has stopped being annoying. And the revelation of Red Eye being some type of freedom fighting skitter was pretty cool. So I guess that warrants another season. Hopefully by the end of this season they will tie up some of the more annoying loose ends. Such as giving the ladies something more to do. And fixing Pope, because whomever is writing that character should be slapped, hard, repeatedly.

Well I'll be damned...

Mayhaps some good writers are free to hire then.

Season 2 began quite weak but got stronger as it went along. And the pieces are finally starting to fall together.

Everything in season 2 is better but this show is still very much average. Hoping this season can finish strong, if not, I'm going to harness myself skitter style.

better writing, much better writing

An ID4 type fight back would be nice but would probably blow their budget.
Reply

agreed but without that then the story will just go in circles so they might need to develop a cheaper version of the Fight back to move the story on next season
