TNT Renews Rizzoli & Isles and Dallas

TNT has seen enough of Dallas to make a decision on its future, handing out a second-season order to the continuation of the Ewings' story. But wait, there's more! TNT also renewed Rizzoli & Isles for a fourth season today.

Soapy 10-gallon hat drama Dallas is pretty much a hit, laying claim to the title of "Basic Cable's Top-Rated New Series." (How many new summer series are there to compete with? Not many...) The show—which according to TNT earned an average of 6.9 million viewers per episode in its first four episodes—is an update on that same-named series everyone went crazy over in the early '80s, following a new generation of the Ewings as they bicker and sex each other up. The ensemble cast includes Larry Hagman's Eyebrows in the role of J.R. Ewing's Eyebrows. TNT has ordered 15 episodes for Season 2.

This is embarrassing. I have no idea what Rizzoli & Isles is about. BRB, going to Wikipedia. Okay, I'm back. Rizzoli & Isles is about a female detective (Angie Harmon) and a female medical examiner (Sasha Alexander) who solve crimes in Boston. It's been a summer boon for TNT, averaging 7.1 million viewers and wearing the pageant sash that reads "Summer's #1 Returning Basic-Cable Scripted Series." Expect 15 episodes for Season 4, due in 2013.

Dallas currently airs Wednesday nights at 9pm and Rizzoli & Isles airs Tuesday nights at 9pm TNT. Are you currently watching either or both shows?

It's a shame more people don't watch Rizzoli and Isles. It really is a very good show with some very good actors. Very happy it's renewed.

I watch them both (just discovered Rizzoli And Isles a few weeks ago and I was a fan of the original Dallas) and they both deserve renewal. There are very few things I watch anymore on the "big networks," so I'm happy to see some high quality programming on TNT.

Tim, what the heck? Rizzoli & Isles is based on a series of novels, it's a light crime drama set against the friendship between a tomboyish detective (who ends up on a lot of high-profile serial cases) and an obsessive fashionable medical examiner - and they're both GOILS! It's not a bad watch. Plus they say "shit" and "asshole" because it's cable. Isn't this your JOB, yo?

PS, thanks so much for the image that will haunt my nightmares forever more.

yep looks like i'll be watching rizzoli and isles next year too ...that didn't take long, i think they've only just aired their 4th episode this season.

kind of fun is it and pretty little liars air the same night and are exactly as far along in their series careers as one another. i prefer rizzoli and isles though neither is particularly brilliant and both are full of attractive women.

Woot! on both :) I've been a Rizzoli & Isles fan from the beginning - I loved Angie Harmon on L&O and loves Sasha Alexander on NCIS, so hearing that they'd be pairing the two I, of course, just HAD to check it out and it's been a load of fun. (Now, if they could just figure out how to get that other ex-L&O attorney who's *also* played a Medical Examiner [on "Crossing Jordan"] - Jill Hennesy - we could have a really wild show on our hands! LOL

I watched the original "Dallas" off and on, but remembered it fondly enough to check out the continuation, and I'm really glad I did. I love the fast pacing of storylines and how well they're making use of the history of the show. I'm glad to hear that there'll be more!

Yeah for Dallas, indeed. What an enjoyable surprise it is. Just a hint for season 2 : more 'middle aged' characters please.

I absolutely LOVE Rizzoli & Isles, so I am thrilled that they have ordered a fourth season!!! They have a great cast and do a good job of creating pretty original story ideas with the repetitive genre of police procedural. I would watch anything with Angie Harmon anyway.

As for Dallas, I have heard great things, and will check it out at some point, so its a good thing there will be more than one season for me to watch.

Yeah for Dallas! I loved the original Dallas and I didn't expect much from this one but it's been a pleasant surprise. The pacing is fast, there's a lot of reveals and twists and JR is still awesome. I also like the fact that they have managed to incorporate the old characters in the new storyline, while also giving them storylines. I'm happy that they didn't just use them as bait like 90210 and that they actually have a purpose.

R&I has a truly talented cast -- especially the great Bruce McGill -- all of whom are sadly wasted in a show that suffers from awful writing (IMO), but this seems true of nearly everything TNT produces in-house.

It's so strange (yet wonderful) that Southland has remained a stellar exception to that basic rule.

The creators of the new Dallas have done a good job with the show IMO, despite some pacing problems (going a bit too fast in the first 2 episodes, and going too slow in the 3rd and 4th episodes. They've done a great giving the show a more modern feel to it, while mixing in a lot of the more important elements of the original. As I said, the pacing could use some work, and being a soap does mean it lies firmly in the guilty pleasure category, but I'm glad they were given a chance to expand on the story they've created.

Great numbers for cable. NBC would kill to have that many people watch a drama on their network.

Rizzoli & Isles is the #1 Basic Cable Drama in the Summer and you have no idea what it's about? Funny how that works.

Perspective: If 7 million Americans are watching it, that means that about 290 million aren't.
