Tom Welling in talks to return to Smallville

With more money, I can finally get a sofa
for my Fortress of Solitude!

Apparently, the reports of Smallville's death have been greatly exaggerated. Popular belief had the long-running Superman drama flying off into the sunset at the end of this season, its eighth, but now it seems there's a rallying cry to move forward.

EW.com cites an inside source who says that star Tom Welling is in discussions to renew his contract for a ninth season, and both sides are very close to striking a deal--a deal that will make Welling pretty darned rich.

Welling is the key to keeping Smallville on the air, and the CW is apparently willing to add some zeroes to his salary to retain him. This isn't without precedent; when Allison Mack pondered leaving, producers resigned her for what is rumored to be some serious scratch.

The series' two creators and two major cast members (Michael Rosenbaum and Kristin Kreuk) opted out of an eighth season of Smallville to pursue other opportunities, leaving many to think that the show should be put down. However, the promise of more Justice League of America actionand a recent jump in quality has loyalists excited for the future of the show.

Let's hear it: should Smallville continue on? Or should it go out with a bang at the conclusion of this season?

I love Smallville. I am currently watching it from the beginning on HDTV and watching the current season on CW. I love this show, but understand that it locks the cast of characters in stereo-types. I love it and want it to stay on-air forever, however that is a very unrealistic expectation. I wish all the players long and fruitful lives, both in their work and in their private lives.

Such a dilemma. This season is better than I expected. I was still under the impression that this was the last season, until I recently saw the episode 'Beast.' I thought that there's no way all can be resolved in 2 more episodes. Then I logged on and read the news about the possibility of a season 9. I think Clark's relationship with Chloe needs more episodes to wind down and then develop into a closer link with Lois and Jimmy. I think Clark should learn to fly in the next season, but should not don the tights and cape until the last episode of the series. Having episodes of Clark in his costume would be untrue to the show. It is about Clark Kent becoming Superman. It needs a good transitional season. Lois is familiar with Clark's face without glasses. That angle needs to be developed. The justice league is the perfect compliment with Clark's final development into Superman. There is a ready made villian in Tess. Oliver should have a falling out with Clark, as he has a different notion of the meaning of the word hero. There is potential antagonism between the two, that could make for some good episodes.moreless

this is my fav show but the really need to bring more of the justice league crew to have any chance of keeping its spot on top, intrest in it is slowly fading out, but still tuned in, in case some thing good actuley happens... what needs to happen is the justice league I mean there in Metropolios, its about time he fly`s and they defo need to bring back michael Rosenbaum, hands down 1 of the best lex around.. a note to user "The Gamblurr".. superman does fly way back when it first started in comics in 1938 and the first televised show in 1951, so watch the flim and tell me if it is not flying.. anyone agree??

Please keep it on! But enough teasing! Get with Lois and don the uniform cause i'm tired of young Clark, time to step it up and be a man with more plot twists and no Lana-Lust!

three people have yet to guest star. green lantern, (hal jordon)wonder woman, and bruce.if at least wonder woman and batman don't show up at all, it will ruin everything good that ever came out of this series.its not just about Clark. its about exposing a new generation to the concepts and ideas of doing something right for a change. it must go on, and i think there's a very, very good potential for a tenth season as well. it should end by season twelve though. more of the flash as well!!!

End it know because I liked the first half of this season but the second half so far has been really pointless and dumb and off of storyline. I can't take Clark whining every other scene about how something happening on the other side of the world is his fault. This is far from it's high point but just end it please.

I have no problem with this show going on, and if it does, they need to go into superman, and possibly change the name of the show to Metropolis or something.

I don't see how long it can go on. I loved it when it first started but now it seems to drag. While I do amdit the current season has finally returned to the type of writing that made Smallville a hit in the first place, it has to end sometime. I just want to see Clark realize his destiny and become Superman already.

  • btscala

Great! If he inks this deal it's a good bet that season 8 will end with the death of Superman.

The series can't end without Bruce Wayne and Diana Prince appearing at least once.

I'm a huge fan of Smallville, and Tom Welling. He is the main reason that I tune in every week. I would hate to see the show end.

I really hope it does come back for a 9th season. Smallville is one of the few shows I watch when it's on (instead of PVRing it). I alwasy look forward to see what's happening. I love the show & the characters. I do miss Lex & Lana, but it's been a pretty good season. I want more!! :)

  • JediKnightJace

Am I the only one who thinks this is a bad idea? I LOVE this show, but once I saw what they were doing with this season (Clark moving to Metropolis, things FINALLY progressing with Lois, Clark facing Doomsday - the only enemy powerful enough to kill him), I loved it but I hoped this season would be the last. I mean, how are they going to top that? The answer is: They won't. Based on the last 7 seasons, whenever they need to drag out the story, Clark will become emotionally troubled, a new Luthor will show up,Clark and Lana will go out and then break up (rinse and repeat), Clark and Lois will remain platonic, I'll wind up starting to hate all the characters, and NOTHING WILL PROGRESS.The 8th season should end with donning his Superman outfit for the first time and flying off to fight injustice. The end.Long story short: I love Smallville, but no more please.moreless

I first read the Legion of SuperHeroes fifty years ago. Smallville is truer to the Superman legend then the last five Superman movies. I applaud a ninth season. Bring back more of the legend. Cheers!!!

Season 7 sucked but smallville is back on track in season 8. If they can keep the same quality and momentum as right now, i'd love to see it back for a 9th. And figure out a way to keep sam witwer's character david bloome in the show after the whole doomsday thing has played out, i'd stick around!

    Jan 24, 2009
  • TylerA46

Season 1: Clark in love with Lana, Clark can't fly, Clark is dumb... Season 8: Clark in love with Lana, Clark can't fly, Clark is dumb... It's time to move on to Lois and flying and then a 9th season could be great.
