TV.com Video Top 10: The best of the new shows

One of the things to look forward to every television is the crop of new shows. Unfortunately, that "crop" is usually just a pile of crap. Aside from a couple of lucky ones, most new series won't live to see their first birthday. This season will probably be no different, but we've narrowed down 10 to keep an eye on.

10. Cougar Town

ABC Wednesdays, 9:30 p.m. - 10 p.m.
Star power: Courteney Cox as a 40-something single mom
Who to watch for: Dan Byrd (Aliens in America) as her son, Busy Phillips as her hormonally charged friend
Cougar Town comes from the mind of Scrubs' Bill Lawrence, so expect some of the same quick comedy with a familial bent. Cox stars as Jules, a recent divorcee who is on the prowl for a new man. The comedy looks like an ample replacement for the cancelled Samantha Who?, but slightly more crass--which we're all for.

9. Parenthood

NBC, Wednesdays 8 p.m. - 9 p.m.
Star power: Peter Krause as the everyman dad
Who to watch for: Dax Shepard (Idiocracy) as the slacker, Craig T. Nelson as the crazy grandfather
Adapting films for television is never a good idea, but we'll make an exception for Parenthood. Ron Howard's original is a gem, and the with the cast assembled for this hour-long dramedy (Maura Tierney co-stars), Parenthood could be surprisingly tolerable.

I watched the preview and it looks totally gay Uggg! A True Blood knock off.

Sorry, but the "rabid fanbase" still follows MOONLIGHT, the best vampire drama ever made, cut down in its infancy and still missed by fans all over the world. True Blood is fun, but it's not MOONLIGHT, which so far hasn't been replaced by anything on TV, so we wait! Give those rabid fans their show back, somebody, (please!) and it will have a solid base of fans to support it! We've gone long enough without it. (No, Three Rivers will not replace it either.)

Vampire Diaries? Really? I have no idea what's it doing on the list and why it higher than Glee?

    Jun 02, 2009
  • FriendsSvuLost8

Definitely V and Flashforward. Perhaps Glee and Modern Family.

    Jun 01, 2009
  • Maverick405

...and Sonya Walger is always worth a look.

    'Glee' looks really good, too.

    May 31, 2009
  • SgtCashmere

'Flash Forward' looks pretty lame. 'Cougar Town' looks hilarious, lol!

    May 31, 2009
  • iewuxis

From these ten I'll definitely gonna watch the Vampire Diaries. Probably even Glee, cause it wasn't too bad. From unlisted I can't wait to see the Beautiful Life, it looks promising. Maybe even I'll give a try and watch Melrose Place, who knows. I don't know why, but I have thing for CW shows, maybe because they are youth-oriented.

  • onceinabluemoon

Hmm...vampires are making a comeback. :] Anyways, I'm definitely checking out Glee. It's my #1 on this list. :) Maybe Modern Family...maybe.

V, Glee, and Sons of Tuscon are the shows I'll try out. All the other ones just sound down right stupid, especially that Vampire show, which won't last too long on the CW, who should just replace it with Reaper now.

    May 30, 2009
  • Buzzwang

I'll give most of them the "three episode win-me-over". Hands down, V with Morena, Elizabeth and Laura; Community and Flash Forward will be permanent staples to my viewing schedule!

    May 30, 2009
  • kait112

I'm definitely going to check out V. Possibly I'll see what all the fuss is about with Glee as well. Other than that---meh. I'm scandalized to hear about Vampire Diaries. This wussification of vampires seriously needs to end. Twilight makes me sick to my stomach and now "hot" man-boy vampires are everywhere and I just wish they'd go away!

    May 30, 2009
  • chicc_o

I'll watch The Vampire Diaries , V and Flash Forwad (which i think would b e th e best) , i think i'll check out Cougar Town (But Just for COurtney Cox)

who wants another teenie soap with vampires? unfortunately quite a lot of people probably. sigh.

  • Prup-aka-JBentn

hockey9927 reminds me that MERCY and TRAUMA are also on my 'worth checking out'list, and I am actualy looking forward to THE HUMAN TARGET - but that's for the mid-season, not now.

    May 29, 2009
  • Prup-aka-JBentn

This is what we've got to look forward to??? I made my own list of shows I will keep track of - at least until I watch and see if they are worth following. I could only find five, and three weren't on your list -- and the two that were, FAST FORWARD and VAMPIRE DIARIES were the ones I was most dubious of. (Even my wife, who has a 'thing' for vampire stories expects to hate VampD -- and any show whose initials are 'VD' has something to overcome to begin with.)

I understand not listing the NCIS spinoff -- whose title should change before it gets on. And while THE FORGOTTEN is the most intriguing new show as far as the premise goes, there are apparently problems in recasting that might hurt it. But I can't believe you didn't include THREE RIVERS. I may not wind up liking it, but it is the only show other than NCIS II that has the potential as a breakout it.

As for your list, LIFE, WITHOUT A TRACE and 11th HOUR are gone and these -- plus DOLLHOUSE -- are replacing them?

If nothing else it is good for writers working on pilots, because there are going to be a lot of gaps to fill.moreless

Glee had a fantastic pilot, so I'm definitely sticking around for the rest of the season. I'm a big Smallville fan, and Vampire Diaries has stolen its time slot. Hopefully the CW knows what they're doing, so I'm going to give Vampire Diaries a try and continue to watch Smallville (now on Fridays at 8). Oh, and I'm absolutely going to watch "V"

Past life and Flash Forward look promising. But Vampire Diaries gets my vote. Ian is great as the "bad" vampire. Can't wait to see more. I notice that some of the shows on this top 10 list don't premiere until mid-season. Does that mean that they couldn't find 10 good "fall" shows. That's very sad but not surprising. I just hope Vampire Diaries is good, and if it is, I hope it lasts. I notice a lot of people have chosen the dramas and not the comedies. I agree. Comedies just aren't what they used to be.

  • carsgovroooom

glee for sure. obsessed with the pilot. and i'm going to give vampire diaries a try.

  • rush_86

this is gonna come off really tweeny, but the vampire diaries looks really good. ian somerhalder is hottness. also i saw glee and it looks like fun. will definatly be tuning into cougar town, maybe even parenthood and flash forward. am looking forward to next season. but am dissapointed that GREAT shows like pushing daisies, eli stone and privileged were not picked up for next season. shows with A LOT OF potential and great storylines, it's a shame.....

mad excited about glee and vampire diaries. but mostly glee. :]

    May 29, 2009
  • joeybrandojones

I am only looking forward to Flash Forward and V, but mostly V, because even though I liked the old one, the aliens were ugly (I also did hate lizardmen who look like that, especially w/ the Lizard from SM, his first appearance in the comics).

Wait, isn't Glee a Summer tv series?

    May 29, 2009
  • abelav78

V, Flash Forward, Vampire Diaries are my top choices

    May 29, 2009
  • LadyInque

The Vampire Diaries looks fine and maybe V the rest not interesting

    XO XO

Where's the originality? Cougar Town seems like it could have been a spin-off to the Desperate Housewives character Susan and The Vampire Diaries seems like a rip off of Supernatural if Sam and Dean do eventually face off. Instead why not just make Supernatural two hours? It's not going to be an instant hit for being about vampires, it's not Twilight. I'll only give it a chance because I like vampires and Nina Dobrev.

    May 29, 2009
  • gekipink

Glee looks good, but jeez... what's with the vampires? OMG I can't take it, there are everywhere!!!

    May 29, 2009
  • birkoff1

Umm...wtf does this have to do with Summer Glau on Dollhouse, the headline that links to this? Also, when you say Glee cast a bunch of unknowns, you mean five unknowns and one 15-year broadway vet who puts the other unknowns to shame?

    May 29, 2009
  • allaboutmoxie

Glee was really good (my inner loser is rejoicing) and the Vampire Diaries could be good - or it could be like Twilight. Not sure about V yet.

    May 29, 2009
  • Kadodian

The Vampire Dairies looks wow ! Like a combination of Supernatural and Buffy :D

    May 29, 2009
  • nofeartina

Uh, the Vampire Diaries look pretty interesting! :)

    May 29, 2009
  • karlandi

V!?!?!?! , that just made my nite. A rather large majority of you prolly never even heard of the original V, well Im THAT old , and it was the second best Scifi Mini series EVER (second only to the BSG pilot mini series). CANT WAIT LOL (especially since TV has suddenly become a scifi black hole). Ill check out Vampire diaries too.

    May 28, 2009
  • MarWash

"Glee" has slightly less appeal for me than "Viva Laughlin". "Vampire Diaries" looks pretty lame so far; like someone thought it was a good idea to smash "The Lake House" and "Moonlight" togther. That said im a sucker for Vamps so i'll check that out... Geesh, i miss "Moonlight".

    May 28, 2009
  • torontogirl98
