TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (March 18)

Here's what was out of sight and just not right on TV this week.

Swell

... Before Fred Armisen was Fred Armisen...
He was goofing off at music festivals, interviewing other musicians (he played drums for Trenchmouth) in various characters. Various highly offensive characters. Hipster music blog Stereogum found this clip of him working the rooms at 1998's SXSW. We'll admit we laughed if you admit it. You first. Bonus points for talking to Bob Nastanovich from Pavement!

... Jimmy Kimmel's "The Littlest Bachelorette"
Kimmel is ruthless when it comes to his own network, and this clip trashes The Bachelor franchise. And yes, we would DEFINITELY watch the inevitable follow-up, The Littlest Bachelor Pad.

... Parks and Recreation gets Taiwanese-Newsed
Thursday's "Harvest Festival" episode was pretty great overall, but the spot-on reproduction of those ridiculous animated Taiwanese newscasts was the highlight.

... Zack Galifianakis's SNL monologue
Best Axe Body Spray joke ever?

... Matt Pinfield is going to host MTV's 120 Minutes again!
Does this mean MTV is showing music videos again? Oh, it's on MTV2. That makes more sense. We're looking forward to whatever "alternative" music videos the show pulls off music blogs.

Hell

... When all four NCAA broadcasts go to commercial at the same time!
And also when none of the commercials are the Napa Know How guy! Statistically, this is damn near impossible. Just like statistically, it's damn near impossible that our own Tim Surette's bracket is SO AWFUL!

... Big shows resorting to "IT WAS ALL A DREAM" sequences
The Event interrupted the president's snoozing with a plot device to make him angrier; V cut into Erica's slumber with a dream that misinterpreted our request to see Erica and Anna in bed together. Even (the otherwise very good!) Being Human got lazy this week, with Josh dreaming that he'd accidentally gone wolfy with his lady around.

... Wilmer Valderrama being cast in REM
One of the season's most promising pilots adds a name we'd like to forget. His That '70s Show days are long gone. Now he'll forever be that host of MTV's Yo Momma, the single worst program in television history.

... American Idol's mashup performance of "Born to be Wild" and Lady Gaga's "Born This Way"
Are we sure this isn't Post-Buffet at the Indian Casino Idol?

... Susan Sarandon playing a sex offender on 30 Rock
We had high hopes for her appearance on the show, but her cameo as a teacher who once had an affair with an eighth-grade Frank was almost as flat as John Slattery's performance as congressional candidate Steve Austin.

What is tv.com's obsession with 'Saturday Night Live'? Three of four mentions in swell and even one in hell were SNL related. Unfortunately SNL is only a shell of what is was when it was 'must see tv'.
Tv.com didn't even have the ballz to put a name on this very week article, instead signing it 'tv.com staff'!

I wish Syfy Being Human would not use the scripts from the BBC show so often. Can't they have an original thought, since BBC BH is starting its 3 season when I watch Syfy most of them are just a remake of something I have already seen. They changed the names of the characters, couldn't they change the scripts also?

When Zach took off his clothes to reveal the dress I laughed, but when he lifted up the dress to show his underwear I just about peed my pants.

why isnt glee on here??? this week's ep was amazing!!!!!!

  • Knox666

OMG how have you not put Glee on here, it was awesome!

  • LaidBack4Life

Saw this on /b/ but luckily only watched 20 seconds of the song. Good for her though to make some money off this...just as long as I don\'t have to listen to it.

  • hockeyrick

Kimmel is great, has come a long way since his KROQ days with Adam Corolla, those guys were a riot in the morning!!! does anyone remember their stuff???and Fred is downright funny! portlandia is a riotIFC has the funniest shows with ONION!!!!!!!!!

"... and if you don't get that joke, than you're not racist." =D

    Best SNL moment this year.

Valderrama gave us 8 years of great TV as fezz, Show him some respect. So what if "Yo Mamma" was a flop? I dont see you bashing Adrianne Palicki for playing Wonder Woman (allthough maybe you're like me, still hoping that show wont ever happen). REM sounds good, and I'm happy Valderrama was cast in it - both for him as an actor and for us as viewers.

All of the March Madness is hell for me - it means certain of my favorite shows are either not on or are delayed.

  • KevinG87

everything but the Parks & Rec part are hell for me this week.

  • adamonfire

It's obvious that you're not a Galifianakis fan because that joke (amongst a number of others in his monologue) are a few years old. I saw him open-up the Will Ferrell Comedy Tour when Semi-Pro was coming out (2008) with Demetri Martin and Nick Swardson and he had the joke then.

  • JohnFarrell0

hate to say it but the lack of a good quality episode of community after a couple weeks off should have earned it a hell spot

  • AndrewBarnes2

The 2 seconds of the Bell/Olivia/Bell transition in Fringethese articles should be delayed until after Fringe has finished

  • staind47

I'll wait to see how Valderrama does before I judge...

  • Taccado

Parks and Rec was hilarious! It might not be the sharpest comedy on the block, not like Community is or Arrested Development was. But it still is up there among the best ones on TV right now. I have thought a lot about what makes the show so appealing to me, and yesterday I realized it. It's this air of positivity. When you start watching an episode you know nothing will go wrong. It is simply good hearted fun. The characters are goofy and will make mistakes all the time, but every time it all ends well. Other comedies do have that dark side to them too, where things go awry and aren't fixed.

  • spr12cr

lol Parks and Recreation was Hilarious

  • saxyroro

Omg that Idol piece is horrible. ugh Why did I bother? Parks and Rec was epically good.

  • NeonicRayne

It's Zach Galifianakis, not Zack....man that messed up my trying to find his standup dvd :P

  • SokkaAppa

I dont mind the dream sequences
