TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (October 8)

Here's what was out of sight and just not right on the small screen this week.

Swell

... Bored to Death getting naked
Creator Jonathan Ames bared all in a hilarious guest spot.

... Modern Family's Luke giving his mom a soda
(Under the bathroom door, in a flat baking tin, with no straw.)

...An impossible runway challenge on America's Next Top Model
We loved seeing every single one of the contestants almost kill herself.

... NBC shows making fun of their network
Both 30 Rock and The Office decried the loss of/paid tribute to Law & Order on Thursday. And we particularly loved this reference to the offensiveness of Outsourced.

... Mad Men casting Twin Peak's Leland Palmer (Ray Wise)
He's not nearly as creepy when playing Ken's future father-in-law.

... The old Dean's return to Supernatural
We're glad they didn't spend too long getting him back.

Hell

... The Big C is pissing us off
First they go for a well-earned emotional moment with Cathy telling her brother she has cancer—and then they take it back. WEAK.

... Chuck spinning its wheels
This show is in serious danger of cancellation. It can't afford mediocre episodes.

... Bryan Cranston on SNL.
We're not saying it was his fault, but when you have an actor who can do it all, shouldn't you use him better?

... Awkward Family Photos
ABC is turning the blog into a show. We expect it to be funny for about 2 minutes.

... David Cross' Blue Man Group line on Running Wilde
It was a funny joke, sure, but if Running Wilde doesn't want to be compared to Arrested Development, it's gotta quit making direct references to Arrested Development. The show is just underlining how it's not matching up.

Sick of hearing you b*tch about outsourced. WAKE UP and realize no one is that offended. I'm kinda surprised that tiny clip from 30 Rock doesn't get your blood boiling.... sounds about as "offensive" AS outsourced but for some reason you are trying to pretend it justifies your argument. Is it just the 30 Rock's seniority or what?Eh "TV".com is getting too biased for me. Why don't you just pick out the shows you like and rename the website.

It's not Chuck it's the writers/producers... the character should grow as well as the series. The addition of Morgan as a spy was a welcome surprise for me, perhaps even the new 'Chuck'. I want to give this show a chance but chances are the writers are bored already :)

  • lavyper

Chuck started out funny (a blundering geek caught up in the spy game). Then he "proved up" to be a spy and everything got serious. Then..."Well, you ain't no James Bond!

  • elainecleo

My Hell would be the Bones ep on Jersey Shore, that was a new low for them. I am leaning away from Bones as I can only take so much of the stupid from Bones. Was cute for a couple of years, but now it is just getting very old. No one that lives in the world can be that clueless about every thing but science.

The runway challenge on ANTM this week was great! I was cracking up the whole time!

  • skidoo369

you're an idiot for this comment on the Big C. I actually think it was one of the most emotional scene I've ever seen on TV, with Dexter's season 4 finale and Breaking Bad's episode where Mr White runs over the dealer last season. I don't shed tears often but this time, I have to say the Big C got me. I think you simply don't understand what it's like to have a member of you family who's sick, dumbass!

Supernatural was the highlight of my ENTIRE week!

  • adamonfire

I would prefer more AD references. I hope Running Wilde sticks around, it's picking up steam. I was always a Chuck supporter, but I too think it has run its course - it's dangerously close to Heroes territory where I just stop watching it altogether - but Heroes only lasted 2 seasons with me.

  • averysays

You're wrong about The Big C. It is still too soon for her family to know, and takeback or not it was still a great emotional moment that showed us another side of her brother.

  • JamesButko

What about community? That should be in the swell section!

  • BarryDalton

30 Rock was funny for the first time this season. Great episode. But the references to Law and Order were kinda tone deaf. I was a big fan the first 15 seasons or so, but come on. Next thing you'll be telling me is that they are going to make a Law & Order: UK! That would be pretty lame.

  • MidgardDragon99

Uhh....wasn't this the Buy More episode that got praised.....uh, yeah. Stop being contrarian for the sake of it. You're not Armond White. How about a swell for Glee making a good emotional episode that had nothing to do with artist tributes? But nooooo better not stop being contrarian, you might risk looking less cool!

  • Nadjazz

    Chuck, what are you doing!

  • Starprincess13

On my Swell list for the week is the Jersey Shore spoof episode of Bones. It was great.

  • jaysturt

I thought The Big C showed the character better by doing that. I actually think it's an extremely good show too. Pretty underated.

  • bonezrulz05

Jane Lynch's performance on glee. Chris Colfer's performance on glee. Sarah Drew in Grey's Anatomy. all were swell and worthy of a mention, especially Jane Lynch. The last 10 seconds of GA were hell though. Sloan and Derek's sister was just weird

  • KevinG87

Supernatural's getting good again. and i actually agree about The Big C, they did this good scene where she tells her brother then she's like GOTCHA I'M JOKING! that really annoyed me. made the whole episode pointless

  • Nagowteena

quote= SokkaAppa"Just because you didnt like the episode from chuck don't say its in danger of being cancelled!" Yes!!! so this.^

  • Orlando-GOL

I think you misunderstood the ending The Big C.

  • zaidghazi

i love chuck but im afraid it IS in danger ..

  • shocker713

OK, lemme mark this down for future reference...if Chuck stuntcasts, then the episode will be mediocre and therefore the show will be in danger of cancellation. Because Tim says so.

  • torque_smacky

It's pretty easy to tell which ones of these are Tim's.

  • hockeyrick

Chuck really does suck! It is past it's value! I like Running Wilde!Maqqie Q and Grace Park-2 reasons to watch TV!

  • mherr3

i didn't think Bryan Cranston on SNL was Hell. It may not have been as good as it could have been, but I'm sure there were worse things on TV this week.

  • steveheisler

It's in danger of cancellation whether the episode was good or not.

  • SokkaAppa

Just because you didnt like the episode from chuck don't say its in danger of being cancelled!
