TV.com Goes to WonderCon 2008

ComicCon's little brother, WonderCon, took hold of San Francisco's Moscone Center this past weekend, momentarily changing the site that usually houses technology dorks into a site that housed nerds of a different variety.

With a floor full of dealers peddling comic books (or if one prefers, "graphic novels"), action figures, and nerdy-and-proud T-shirts, WonderCon is an annual event that serves as Mecca for science-fiction and fantasy fans.

The three-day event saw its share of wild-costumed attendees, with the standard fleet of Stormtroopers, Princess Leias, and superheroes, as well as the more unique, including Space Ghost, a plushy Creature from the Black Lagoon, and a duct-tape Alien.

The subject of Friday's panels included a look at Forgetting Sarah Marshall, the new Judd Apatow comedy written by and starring Jason Segel. The panel included stars Segel, Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars), Mila Kunis (That 70's Show, Family Guy), Jack McBrayer (30 Rock), and the scene-stealing Russell Brand all talking about the film and Segel's nipples.

Also on the schedule was a look at the upcoming action movie Wanted. Star James McAvoy (Atonement) charmed the audience with tales of working with Angelina Jolie and getting into the action genre, although the audience may simply have been wooed by his Scottish accent.

By Saturday, day two, the convention was going at full speed. The costumes were out in full force, and the show floor was wall-to-wall with amateur superheroes and wannabe anime characters.

The busiest place that day was Hall A, where fans flocked to see a day's worth of panels featuring Get Smart, 10,000 BC, and the new Narnia movie.

However, the highlight of the day was the session for the upcoming X-Files movie, which featured creator Chris Carter and stars David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson. It was a veritable lovefest, with one fan admitting that she attended the conference even though her mother had just suffered a stroke.

Other memorable moments included John Cho repeatedly saying that smoking marijuana doesn't necessarily make one a bad person during the Harold and Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay panel, director Jon Favreau introducing footage of Robert Downey Jr. testing out the jet boots in Iron Man, and the latest from Pixar's upcoming animated feature Wall-E.
