TV.com Top 10: The Most Disappointing Cancellations of 2010-2011... So Far

Fox cleaned out its closet this week by canceling five shows, many of which were likable programs. With the scent of fresh blood still in the air, we thought we'd take a look at the most disappointing cancellations of the season so far—and we say "so far" because the networks will announce their fall lineups next week, and that will certainly change the makeup of this list.

10. The Chicago Code

Why we're sad it's gone: Shawn Ryan, creator of The Shield, makes compelling television. Though there are plenty of cop shows on the TV beat these days, The Chicago Code was distinctive for network TV. We'll also miss its adoration of its main character: The Windy City.
What went wrong: Cable is the true home of tough cop shows. If the cops of The Chicago Code sang and danced and made out with each other more often, it might have had a shot.

9. Caprica

Why we're sad it's gone: Sure, it got off to a shaky start. A really shaky start. But things cleaned up a lot toward the end, and Caprica did what all shows should do: made us think.
What went wrong: People were expecting another Battlestar Galactica. We did not get another Battlestar Galactica.

8. In Treatment

Why we're sad it's gone: There was zero action, and every episode was pretty much just people sitting on couches talking. But the critically acclaimed series was like a well-crafted stageplay, with an emphasis on acting and depth of character.
What went wrong: See the first line of the paragraph above.

7. Lie to Me

Why we're sad it's gone: While the show didn't exactly knock it out of the park on a weekly basis, it was interesting as far as procedurals are concerned. And Tim Roth was a joy to watch as Dr. Cal Lightman, a character who became more and more intriguing as the series progressed.
What went wrong: Fox didn't help things by throwing it around the schedule.

6. Human Target

Why we're sad it's gone: The fights! The wisecracks! Chi McBride!
What went wrong: We don't know!? Who doesn't love fights!?!? Who doesn't love wisecracks? Who doesn't love Chi McBride?

NEXT: The 5 Most Disappointing Cancellations of 2010-2011... So Far

PAGE TWO

5. All My Children/One Life to Live

Why we're sad they're gone: Their cancellation signals big changes in the daytime TV landscape: the end of the soap opera and the rise of talk shows that feature a bunch of "celebs" squawking about subjects they have no business talking about.
What went wrong: Soap operas had their day, but so did the dinosaurs. I blame technology!

4. Traffic Light

Why we're sad it's gone: Again, this wasn't an amazing show, but it did prove to be one of the standout "handful of friends" romantic-comedies we were bombarded with this season. Plus it had tons of potential.
What went wrong: Dudes don't like rom-coms. They're supposed to like fights! And wisecracks! And Chi McBride!

3. Lone Star

Why we're sad it's gone: Imagine this: a challenging drama on network TV that isn't about cops, lawyers, or doctors. That was Lone Star. Fox took a big chance on it, critics loved it, but ratings were so bad it only lasted two episodes. We're sad not just for the show, but for the genre. No network will try out cable-style drama ever again.
What went wrong: It was on network TV and not cable. (Alternate reason: People are idiots.)

2. Stargate Universe

Why we're sad it's gone: It was one of the last true sci-fi shows on Syfy, and it was starting to get really good, but Syfy is trying to push out the nerds. Now there are cooking shows on Syfy. Cooking shows!
What went wrong: Network re-branding, dude. Nothing personal. It's just business.

1. Terriers

Why we're sad it's gone: The characters felt real and believable, and the setting and details were within our reach. In a day where over-the-top is standard, Terriers' subtlety created an air of intimacy that we sorely miss.
What went wrong: The name, the marketing, all that. Terriers was a hard show to sell because it wasn't easily definable. Without flash and pizazz, viewers just didn't tune in.

I'm really going to miss Lie to me, Stargate: Universe, and Human Target!

Cancel Hell's Kitchen, 90210.. cancel most of the reality shows.. they're frelling boring.

I'm actually happy that All My Children got canceled.. it's like all the characters in that soap opera were on stupid pills & libido pills. stupid pills + libido pills - condoms= sexually transmitted diseases & viruses.. Yet some how the characters never contracted a single thing. Frell, it's like that in all the U.S. soap operas (they suck).

Chicago Code... hey, at least give it a second season chance. And Lie to Me... got a bit weird the second season but was better the third. They just do not give shows a chance any more.

LIE TO ME - of all the shows I watched this one was interesting if only for Tim Roth, you never knew what you were going to get with him.

SGU, I will miss it more than Conan's beard. We need more Sci-Fi on SyFy. SGU and even Caprica had potential that was confused it's first season to separate it from its predecessors. They final got going and got cancelled. SyFy is Fox but they add a year on to the good show before they cancel them

Lie to me and Terriers were awsome serials, i realy cannot understand that serials like csi has about 6 spinoffs, and all those have the same boring thing week in week out, and as soon as a serial is a little different , they get canceled. the chicago code was good to, not great, but good. chase was great, but also gone... of course.... seems like i got a nose for serials that get canceled... i need to go work for a network, and safe them a lot of money.

Human Target was one of my favorites. Chicago Code was also excellent. Both should have been renewed instead of some of the junk that was kept. Typical broadcast networks, throwing out the baby and keeping the bathwater.

I'm a big science fiction fan, but the only program I watch on that network now is Merlin. What wrestling and cooking shows are doing there, I can't figure out, except that the corporate empty suits view all channels as the same.

Crap I was really liking Traffic Light and Terriers..we coulda at least seen Traffic Light's season finale.

Syfy is turning into a crap fest. They keep killing all the things that make them sci-fi but I guess that was the point and hence the name change. Instead of "Imagine Greater" it should be "Forget the Past"

SGU, The Good Guys, V and Mr. Sunshine I will miss greatly! I kind of liked the SGU ending but I'd have been much happier with a new series. I thought it was a lot better than Atlantis.
I thought Good Guys was brilliant, the cast was superb but it just didn't get enough viewers. I was hoping someone else would pick it up (along with a lot of the other cancelled shows), but I guess it just wasn't meant to be!

I hate syfy i really thought SGU was getting good it had a shaky first season but a major improvement for the second and the way it was left is disgraceful

Fox is disappointing. I make it a point not to watch this network after they cancelled Tru Calling. Fox will have a good show and then pull it after a year or two and it's disappointing.

What about Rubicon?

I think you should Mad Love to this list.

No Ordinary Family should be on this list. I'm disapointed that it's going off the air. Traffic Light was just a Friends clone.

Lie To Me is a total upset! They tossed that show around so much it made it hard for ratings to ever get up.

I'm kinda going to miss Chase. It was cheesy and unrealistic but it was action packed and amusing and it had a little potential.

Man I am going to miss Human Target

Terriers still needs to be saved! Also, Breaking In! And, Lights Out!
I don't know how long ago this was cancelled now, but Rubicon was a really cool show, they should bring that back too! Finally, I'm not quite sure on the fates of V and Nikita but both of those shows should be renewed.

I am at a loss as to what CBS exes could be thinking of when they decide to keep or cancel!!! Are they that out of touch with the clear minded people who enjoy a clean action show, drama,or a good story or series where the good guys get the criminals with a descent storyline and not a bunch of idiots on a boring retards trying to pull off comedy show that either border trash or plain vulgar!! JPA-boycotts CBS!

I'm stunned after reading this article. I have to say that this last season of TV produced some of the best line-ups of new shows I can recollect, so I suppose that cuts have to be made to good shows. However, I'm also still compelled to say, "Networks! Do you have your heads up your asses???"
Lie to Me, Chicago Code, Traffic Light, Breaking In are all entertaining if not great shows, and have become mainstays in the nightly viewing routine. In my opinion, Chicago Code was one of the best currently on the air. What's next - cancelling Happy Endings???
Is there some way people can petition to the networks to reverse some of these decisions? How about they can all the never ending crappy reality series!!!!

Lie to Me. I loved how Cal's daughter threw his own things back at him. I love the relationship he and his daughter had. In addition, it was fun to watch and made me laugh.

Pissed and sad to see Stargate Universe go! If only Syfy was STILL Sci-fi channel, then we wouldn't be watching wrestling and cooking shows on the damn channel.

don't you think that all shows should get 1 & 1/2 seasons... gives them time to develop a following and at the mid point of season 2, if not enough ratings, then cancel them and allow for tying up loose ends for the audience/fans... that way everyone would know to expect growth in first half of 2nd season or else andd if else, would get conclusion properly... would make the fans not so angry for getting #@itted out of closure, because we fans would get proper ending to the series... think about it broadcast network execs.... you guys are alienating your bread and butter with all these partial 1st seasons and changing the times off our shows then @@itcanning them after 8 or 12 episodes... crazy to expect us to invest ourselves this way over and over again... have some respect for us and you'll develop a BRAND loyalty base (loyal back to you for you considering US in your decisions) and really, we'd all know what to expect, even the actors and writers, but ESP the fans??!! think about it..

Lie To Me & Chicago Code shouldn't be cancelled, Lie To Me was great FOX kept screwing with the schedule, making it very difficult to watch. Chicago Code..where do i begin...TOO MANY DAMN SHOWS ON MONDAY NIGHTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I had to sacrafice watching or even being able to record it with my dvr because god forbid you cant record 2 things without watching what your recording without having to watch whats already stored on dvr. so most of the time i had to choose between Chicago Code, Hawaii 5-0, & Law & Order: LA; which probably will be cancelled as well. so pretty much I'm going to stop watching FOX because any show that they put on like Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and then screw with scheduling and then cancel everything I watch. I don't watch American Idol which is pretty much on every damn day or Glee. They do two new episodes of Glee on two nights in a row, yet I can't even watch something else because they cancel it....

I'll miss "V" mainly for the visual perfection that is Morena Baccarin. She was equally gorgeous on a recent episode of "The Mentalist". The "V" finale was quite a bloodbath and I couldn't figure out how it would continue. I'll also miss Better With You. I enjoyed the three couple comparisons throughout the show. TV execs are idiots.

I love(d) Lie to Me. Tim Roth made Cal Lightman funny/scary cool. I think Jennifer Beal should have stayed on this show, but, she got canncelled anyway, so.....

LIE TO ME was so much more interesting than most weekly shoes. Fox should have just given it a little more time. If you want to get rid of something, start with the "House wifes of everywhere!" What Brats!!. Dr Lightman was far more interesting than any of the WIVES.

I am so mad about the Chicago Code being cancelled. I don't usually watch new shows because they get cancelled, but I gave in and started and this is what I get. I hope one of the sister stations picks it up. I will gladly watch it on another network!! And, the authors were right, they didn't sing so Fox had to cancel it to stay in line with the rest of the crap they have. I mean seriously, they picked up Family Guy for another season. Fox just sucks and I'm not watching it anymore. I stopped watching NBC after last season's cancellations and now Fox is on my boycott list.

MichaelLuff0 - What are you talking about..? Did you even watch SGA?! Stargate Atlantis ended with the city being stranded on Earth, the Wraith were still ruling the Pegasus galaxy and how were they going to get Ronon and Teyla (Pegasus natives) home?? How were they going to keep a freakin' floating city in the middle of San Francisco bay a secret from the world???? Stargate Universe failed because the producers f*cked over all the loyal SGA fans by creating a new show then not delivering on the continuation movie for their old fans. SGU could have beeen amazing, could have had tonnes of loyal fans (new AND old) if they had delivered on their promises. SGU was set up to fail because of that. It was a shame 'cause even though I thought some episode were slow or boring - it had a great cast and a lot of potential! True SyFy has died *sigh* (Does SyFy really have cookery shows on it?? '_' )

The Chicago Code, Hawaii Five-0 and CM: Suspect Behavior were the only new shows I watched this year but damn FOX for cancelling their best show. And I really hope CBS doesn't make the same mistake with Suspect Behavior - it has potential but it needs another season to grow!

Stargate Universe is the last star gate left. At least the other two finished with an ending, not a cliffhanger. Why are syfy doing this, it is the last syfi thing left on the channel. Like this place says, they now have crapy cooking shows!

For me its Caprica that I will really miss. It was really starting to get very interesting. It was going somewhere amazing. Stargate Universe I like also. There were some great episodes but it had started getting weak and just trailing along. I can understand why its being chopped.
