TV.com's 12 Days of Clips-mas, Day 1: All Two Hours of the Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978

To help you get into the holiday spirit, for the next 12 days, we'll provide you with one classic holiday TV clip. We've scoured through our archives and your comments on our story in which we asked you to name your favorite holiday episodes, and came up with a list of dazzling, heartwarming, and totally weird holiday clips. And instead of sharing the same ol' episodes we've all seen (don't get us wrong, we're totally down with some Festivus and Holiday Armadillo) we erred on the side of strange and obscure to keep things interesting.

Day 1: The Entire Star Wars Holiday Special from 1978

Every kid's fantasy came true in 1978 when the cast of Star Wars came together to make a holiday TV special. Whether it lived up to expectations is another matter. But there's no questioning that this trippy program is now a fascinating little time capsule. It aired on CBS on November 17, 1978, and featured silly guest appearances (like Bea Arthur, who you can see bartending at the cantina at 1:20:16), musical numbers, Wookie drama, and a cartoon with Boba Fett. So it does have its place in the Star Wars canon, since fan-favorite Boba made his debut here. And a highlight of this embedded video is that it was posted complete with the original commercials. Catch the previews for CBS's 1978 series: All in the Family! Dallas! And who could've remembered that so many union and pro-labor commercials were airing at that time? So for now put away those shiny new blu-ray discs and enjoy a lo-fi look at a galaxy far, far away...

Merry Clips-mas, everyone!

Love,

I saw this when it aired originally. I was mesmerized with Boba Fett and the cartoon in the middle is the highlight of the special. About 6 years ago, I bought a bootleg DVD of this thing from eBay and it came with the Muppet Show episode with Mark Hamill and about 2 hours of Star Wars toy commercials from the 70s and early 80s. I enjoyed the commercials the most, but every once in awhile, I pull this special out and torture friends with it. Only around the Life Day holiday though.

OMG I tried to watch the Star Wars Holiday "Spectacle" (misspelling intended). It's so bad. 5 to 10 minutes at the start of just wookie talk without subtitles. Had to get out.

This brings back some nice memories from my childhood.

It's pretty bad but it's still better than Jar Jar Binks. :)

I remember watching the Star Wars special when it first aired, and it wasn't really that bad at the time. There was just so much Star Wars love at the time that anything Star Wars was popular. And it's not like there was much in the way of sci-fi on TV to compete. But nobody took it seriously. It was just as campy as all the other variety shows on TV at the time.

So bad that it has never, ever, ever been released for home audience on any medium...and if Lucas has his way, never will be..:D...god bless the fans who recorded it off their TV back then as its mere existance to this day tweaks Lucas to no end.
