TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (December 17)

Happy weekend, everyone! It's with a mix of excitement and sadness that we present you with the very last edition of Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision for 2011. Are you pumped? Sad? Distraught? Either way, don't you fret: Starting Monday, we'll be kicking off our annual Top 100 Everything of 2011 countdown, which is kinda like a whole year's worth of Swell-o-vision in ten handy installments. And then we'll be back in 2012 with more TV-related loves and hates. For now, though, here's what we loved and hated about TV this week:

Swell:

Louis C.K.'s Reddit AMA and internet special

The world's best stand-up and creator, editor, producer, director, and caterer of Louie spent a few hours on the popular message board this week and candidly answered fans' questions. The event was a thank you to the site, which delivered people to his latest experiment: a web-only stand-up special designed to cut out studio middlemen and give power to artists. It's only five bucks, and we highly recommend supporting the cause.

Community's "Community on the Internet" de-briefs:

They're all great, but the latest installment, a behind-the-scenes look at "Regional Holiday Music," is hosted by creator Dan Harmon, features cameos by Richard Ayoade (nerd comedy explosion!) and Annie's boobs, and is a good way to deal with the show being off the air.

This SNL holiday card, featuring everyone's favorite club kid, Stefon

New York's hottest club is called SQUAW and features human turkeys. That's when a dwarf rolls up into a fetal position and grandma presents him to the table on a serving platter. For more TV holiday card goodness, check out Fox's season's greetings with the cast of Sons of Anarchy.

Howard Stern joining America's Got Talent

This will be "Hell" for a lot of people, but it's not like AGT is some untouchable classic. A good move on NBC's part to bring some new life to the talent show.

True Blood for Christmas

The HBO hit is not for everyone.

This Breaking Bart mash-up

What happens when The Simpsons meets Breaking Bad? Ned Flanders becomes Walter White, Bart becomes Jessie, and Jane becomes... something. Why did it take us so long to realize that the two shows' respective lawyers are the same people?

Hell:

Golden Globes snubs and flubs

Breaking Bad, Parks and Recreation, and Community didn't get any love from the HFPA. Glee is nominated for Best Comedy. What is this world coming to? Occupy the Globes! (Actually, please don't.)

19 Kids and Counting's Duggar family released photos of their miscarried baby's corpse

This is just the most awful, hellacious thing we've seen in a long time.

Maddy's quest for a new "core" for her "plex" on Terra Nova

Let us fill you in: Maddy's laptop/iPhone/studybook needed a new battery, so she tried to trade a wheel to a guy in a wheelchair in exchange for a new one, but the guy had already gotten a new wheel and recommended that she try to trade with the colony's shady bartender. She offered to help the shady bartender with his accounting, but he recognized her as the daughter of the chief of security, and just gave her a new battery instead. No one does completely pointless storylines better than Terra Nova.

Common's new video will premiere during Hell on Wheels this weekend

The rapper-turned-actor will debut his latest video during the show he stars on. This behind-the-scenes partner negotiation feels clunky and forced, and it's a train we would rather not get on.

This Work It poster
UGH.

Dan Harmon : "That's me, attributing the quality of our show to God."

Yep... 'Sound about right to me.

Swell: TBBT was on... My second favourite comedy...

Hell: My TV's aerial is APPALLING so I couldn't watch it and I could only find one working channel... And it was wipeout- urgh...

Swell: At least Community's season three won't air in Australia until ages after the aerial is fixed... Thanks to the hiatus... And if it does at all.

Hell: What if it gets cancelled or... Or... It doesn't get a fourth season!!! NO!! Damn you TBBT and your good ratings!

D:(

Swell.. along with the final dance scene from the "Its Always Sunny", the return of Taco as Mr. McGibblets on another hilarious episode of "The League".

Also, in another brilliant episode of "Psych" (in what has been one of its best seasons) featuring great guest spots by Jason Priestly and a stunning Jennifer Finnegan (as well as a hilarious dose of Ardin Myrin) the final scene with Gus finding an engagement ring in Sean's missing Nintendo.

To all of those complaining about the Golden Globes, just remember how much worse last year was. This year's nominations are a huge improvement, really. They didn't starfrack as much as they do, for once didn't nominate Johnny Depp, and Glee went from having 5 nominations to having just one. This actually gives me hope that they might get it right, someday.

The GG's suck this year, what do they look at? Only good this is Gervais.

19 kids-PLEASE! Someone give them a condom!

Swell: The dance in the final scene from It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. It was just perfect!

It pains me so much to say this, bc i'm so obsessed with this show but..... Hell: The entire season of Dexter. I used to turn off my phone for an hour and threaten my friends with violence with they attempted to contact me in any way while Dexter was on. This season its been eh, what else is on.

I started watching Dexter out of a morbid fascination. Its slash-happy, avenger of the night premise, definitely has an element of curious vicariism for the viewer. I mean, who hasn't dreamed of enforcing a little vigilante justice upon the dregs of our society? But, sadly, it's a different sort of morbid fascination that has kept me watching this year - wanting to see just how much worse this trainwreck of a season can get.

They can only go up from here. That is a positive right? :-(

Swell: A Bridget Regan sighting on Person of Interest!! For those of you who remember, the lovely actress played the super bad-ass heroine Kahlan Amnell on LoTS (you know what I'm talking about TorontoGirl ;)

Tv.com's continued Community coverage (try saying that 3x fast)... Timmy!!

And this one is for the guys. or girls who like girls. I'm not judging. You don't need to feel guilty for like-liking Jane Levy of Suburgatory. Although she recently had her sweet 16 on the show- the actress is turning 22 this month, so yeah.... ya know....

Hell: 'Work it'

How is this happening??? How much peyote were eaten when this "show" was conceived?/ My dog Farfignugen could come up with a better concept just by barking!

**Disclaimer Alert: I do not actually own a dog named Farfignugen. The idea of me owning said dog was intended for comedic effect only.**
Reply
Flag
Fun "Farfignugen" fact: It's actually a common English misspelling of the German "fahrvergngen", which means - "cooperation on the road", "having fun driving" and "driving safely". How can you not love German? It's such a poetic language.

Hahahahahahaha I love that Work It poster.

amen to putting work it on the list. like honestly, who sat down at a meeting and decided "this is a great show idea?" i mean did they smoke peyote first?

and the duggar baby corpse made me sick, now will that family finally stop procreating???
Reply

Hahahah..... That is too funny! We both concluded peyote was somehow involved in the decision making process. I think we're on to something here!!

"Community on the Internet" made my week. It was fascinating getting a glimpse into Dan Harmon's process. And he can RAP?! He doesn't think much of his abilities, but it wasn't that bad. I was starting to go into withdrawal, so thanks for the Community fix, TV.com.

The "Breaking Bart mash-up" is the funniest thing The Simpsons (Matt Groening) has done since season 8. I couldn't stop laughing. Hearing Jesse's voice come out of Bart's mouth killed me. But I wonder what Krysten Ritter would think about being portrayed as a mutated, vomiting frog?

Here is the "Work It" Synopsis:

"Two guys decide to dress and act as women during the daytime in order to keep jobs as pharmaceutical reps turn into their normal selves at night when they hang out together at their local bar." - This is just offensively bad.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well he could rap. Whenever I hear him speak, I assume he's probably incapable of rapping, especially at faster speeds, but I think he did pretty damn good in that video.

Oh God, "Work it" sounds like the biggest piece of crap ever.

Holy shit dude, that Breaking Bart mash-up was toooooo funny!!

Didn't think it was possible to fancy Allison Brie anymore than I already did until I saw her in the Christmas outfit!

It's little things like that that remind me I was right to give up on Terra Nova after three episodes! Can we give it an award for 'Worst Writing for a Drama Series'?

OK, TV.com, it's time you started your own award ceremony (just for fun), with catagories like Worst Writing for a Drama Series & Comedy Series, Best New Intro, Worst Network Line-up, Most Deplorable New Character etc. It would be much more interesting than the Globes or SAG's.

I'd have added Claire Danes to the 'Swell' for Carries' near mental breakdown on Homeland - fantastic acting.

To the 'Hell' list I'd add the last episode of both Criminal Minds and CSI, talk about by the book writing - they were pathetic. I can imagine it's difficult to keep a show fresh but the characters on Criminal Minds are untouchable and the stories on CSI are predictable and tame. Boring!

Completely agree about Claire Danes. It was so believable, I found it difficult to watch.
Reply
Flag
I agree. The writing on Terra Nova makes the writing on The Event look good! Actually, on second thought, that's a tough one...
Reply
Flag
At least The Event had the whole Vicky vs. Leila thing going for it. I still think Tim is crazy for picking Leila.
Reply
Flag
I only watched the first half of the event, I just couldn't get in to it, but the difference for me was the mystery. I was genuinely interested in what was going on behind the scenes with The Event, but because so much of the first three episodes of Terra Nova was pointless I just couldn't be bothered to watch anymore.
Reply
Flag
I cannot believe someone at ABC was drunk enough to actually agree to put Work It on the air.
Reply
Flag
Not that the Community video wasn't great and everything, because uh, it was. But I was more than a little disappointed when I realized you were referring to the monkey.

Also, I haven't been watching the show lately but that Maddy storyline on Terra Nova was the stupidest and unintentionally funniest thing I've read since the Breaking Bad nomination snub for the Golden Globes.

Richard Ayoade!!!! Uh-oh, I think a vein just burst in my forehead. Too much excitement is not good for your health.
