TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (March 25)

Here's what was out of sight and just not right on TV this week.

Swell

... The Many Faces of Willem Dafoe
If we actually like a commercial, it HAS to be good—and this spot for Jim Beam, featuring one of our favorite actors, most certainly is.

... Laura and Sarah Silverman as brothers Andy and Ollie on Bob's Burgers
This certainly helped us forget that The Sarah Silverman Program is no more, but we almost didn't recognize Sarah because she didn't say "poop" or make any cracks about Chinese people.

... Liz Lemon's walk-and-talk with Aaron Sorkin on 30 Rock
The master himself paraded Liz around in a circle as the pair of TV show creators discussed TV shows while playing TV show creators on a TV show. We're just happy the universe is still in one piece after all this meta-madness.

... Fox renewed Fringe early! Fox renewed Fringe early!
Our own Tim Surette always said it'd be back, but we didn't believe him. The early renewal bodes well for a fantastic finale this season.

... Onion News Network knows who really runs Facebook
And yes, this is a video even though it's hard to see the play button. Watch it!

... Michael Scott's marriage proposal to Holly on The Office
It was sentimental, funny, and unusual, but then at the last moment got suddenly devastating as the gathered co-workers realized he'll be moving to Colorado. Dang, we're starting to miss him already.

Hell

... NBC's ads for The Voice
It's bad enough they got in the way of our NBC Thursday-night comedies (we were trying to watch Leslie Knope and Liz Lemon, not Christina Aguilera), but they're for a show that, perhaps not so ironically, SOUNDS dumb.

... Hulk Hogan on American Idol
The Hulkster found time between two children's birthday parties to stop by Fox and make a pointless appearance. Hulk, if we still wanted to know whether you were alive or not, we'd just check your Wikipedia entry.

... It's lights out for Lights Out
This decision punched us in the gut, knocked us out, and [insert several other boxing metaphors that mean "made us sad"].

... Starz delays its Netflix streaming by 90 days
How the hell are we supposed to keep up with the latest homoerotic-gladiator-water-cooler-talk on a three-month delay?

... Marcel's Quantum Kitchen
Are we really supposed to tune into Syfy to watch a very un-sci-fi cooking show starring an arrogant ass who we don't care about?

What made your list of loves and hates this week?

I so agree with Mammacat64 about "Terriers." It's demise haunts me, too. Wonder if it's too late to resurrect?

I want Detroit 1-8-7- back. Come on producers. Confirm already. Also Human Target and Chase. I'm waiting in anticipation. What about Memphis Beat and The Glades? Are they coming back? I love those shows. I'm so glad that The Chicago Code is doing well cause it's my new favourite show. Please keep Blue Bloods also. Love it.

It's a good thing I didn't invest in Lights out. I saw the first episode which I liked but decided not to invest in it. It's a good thing I didn't.

I can't believe they dropped The Gates. I was waiting for that and when I didn't hear anything I went and searched. They didn't even advertise much that the show wasn't coming back. I did not get closure and I'm very disappointed.

P.S. TERRIERS still haunts me..I know that was headed for what should have been Season 2..There's so much mindless garbage on American Network TV ..Little of it is entertaining(for me)..

Love what they've done with FRINGE..However, "Lights Out" is such an obviously solid series with an amazing cast of actors..how could it be cancelled so soon? I'm not a boxing fan at all..and I was enthralled with this show..So sad to see great talent squelched by the whim of some moronic exec..

Renewal of Fringe, the two season renewal of The Venture Bros, Aaron Sorkin on 30 Rock. .. This has been a good week. Now the only non-cable show on my to-watch list to still not be renewed is Chuck.

30 Rock was really good this week. Especially the scene with Aaron Sorkin. It was perfect that they did the Walk & Talk.

I don't know why I'm still surprised/upset when a good show is canceled (in a culture where reality programming is on the rise, animated shows are considered epic, and the "best" comedy on TV is Two and a Half Men). R.I.P. - Lights Out.

Hulk on Idol was so bad I couldn't watch it!

FRINGE!!!! And even though I agree that it's on the wrong network, I actually really liked Marcel's Quantum Kitchen, and I don't normally watch reality shows.

FX cancelled Terriers and now Lights Out. FX is starting to get on my bad side. If they were smart they would reverse this decision.

I'm thrilled Fringe was renewed.

yes, Marcel is an ass and yes it doesn't belong on Syfy, (belongs on Food or maybe even Discovery) but it was kind of cool. and with Ace of Cakes gone i need something to fill that void. 30 Rock was funny, and heck yes for Fringe! and The Office was good, so was Parks & Rec. i'm not watching Idol or The Voice so who cares lol

Ecstatic about Fringe, heartbroken over Lights Out...
Incidentally, David Morse's performance on Lights Out this week should have been in the swell!

Not surprised Lights Out was cancelled. Was a great show, hopefully it gets some sort of conclusion at least.

Swell: Alt-livia gives birth to a baby boy!// March Madness. Hell: The NY Knicks. The NFL labor dispute. and no Supernatural... again.

Maybe Marcel will teach us how to make some NASA inspired dehydrated meals or sci-fi TV themed dishes, like "TV's Frank & Beans" (MST3k), "The X-Fries" or "Smoke Monster Ribs" (Lost)? In some of the photos of Marcel's Quantum Kitchen, Marcel looks a little like the vampire-guy from Twilight, only with a beard.

YAYYYYYYYY FRINGE!!!!

You're right. NBC has been promoting Hop (which looks horribly stupid) nonstop, and even with the "easter egg" promotion, The Voice was STILL more annoying.

first terriers, now lights out? FX, please stop making awesome shows and then canceling them.
