TV.com's Swell-o-vision vs. Hell-o-vision (May 13)

Here's what we thought was out of sight and just not right on television this week... that DIDN'T involve cancellations or renewals.

Swell:

... Scotty McCreery Goes Gaga
The country boy on Idol seemed to be the one who took the least from mentor Lady Gaga's words of wisdom—despite her best efforts to get him to turn his microphone straight. (Listen to the girl, Scotty!) Jimmy Kimmel turned it into a Swell, however, with this parody:

... San Francisco was named 11th gayest city in US, and the Daily Show was on the scene
Jason Jones investigates the hardcore scene of the country's new gayest city: Minneapolis.

... Amy Sedaris on Bob's Burgers
Sedaris is always deserving of the spotlight, even if it's as a cartoon mortician's blind date. Our only complaint is that her guest-voice appearance wasn't long enough!

... The New Era Cap commercials featuring the fine acting chops of NBC favorites John Krasinski and Alec Baldwin
Whether or not you care about baseball or caps, they are funny!

... Home Improvement: The 20th Anniversary Collection on DVD
Released on Tuesday, all eight seasons of the lovable, grunt-y family comedy are now available packaged together in a thematically appropriate red tool box. Guess what we're watching this weekend?

... Michael Bolton's tribute to Captain Jack Sparrow via last weekend's SNL Digital Short
Listen closely and you'll realize that the music behind the catchy hook about Sparrow's "mystical quest to the isle of Tortuga" is even adapted from the movie's score.

(Take note of the similarities between the chorus and the movie theme about one minute in.)

Hell:

... Good Eats is 86'd
Alton Brown has reportedly discontinued his wonderfully informative and entertaining cooking show after 249 episodes. But there's a silver lining: The Mr. Wizard of the kitchen is cooking up something new.

... Outsourced's Wedding Finale Bash
We cried at this wedding, but only because we couldn't find the remote to change the channel.

... Dairy Queen's fencing ad
We've officially grown tired of ads that so clearly rip-off the Old Spice campaign.

... Durbin Done Gone
The biggest Idol ouster shocker since Chris Daughtry, hands down. Still, James will do just fine. There will always be room in the music industry for a guy who can hit Axl Rose notes.

... Matthew Perry is back in rehab
"Please enjoy making fun of me on the world wide web," the Mr. Sunshine star said in a statement. We're just happy he's taking the steps he needs to get well.

The Vampire Diaries finale was SWELL and the season as a whole and Nina Dobrev playing Kat and Elena was so good I would forget it was the same actress playing both parts. More than Swell. Community 2 part finale was great.

Hell is having the TV.com staff putting a childrens cartoon in this list. Tv.com is so afraid that 'We The People' will criticize them, THEY WON'T EVEN PRINT THE ARTICLE WRITERS NAME.

Smallville was okay, especially with Jimmy Olson's "brother" cameo. "Talking things out" went on too long and defeating Darkseid and Apokolips was ludicrously shoehorned into the last few minutes.

What WAS with the "Cougar Town" cameo's on Community? I had to replay it in slow motion to make sure I wasn't halucinating.

all shows should get 1 & 1/2 seasons... gives them time to develop a following and at the mid point of season 2, if not enough ratings, then cancel them and allow for tying up loose ends for the audience/fans... that way everyone would know to expect growth in first half of 2nd season or else andd if else, would get conclusion properly... would make the fans not so angry for getting #@itted out of closure, because we fans would get proper ending to the series... think about it broadcast network execs.... you guys are alienating your bread and butter with all these partial 1st seasons and changing the times off our shows then @@itcanning them after 8 or 12 episodes... crazy to expect us to invest ourselves this way over and over again... have some respect for us and you'll develop a BRAND loyalty base (loyal back to you for you considering US in your decisions) and really, we'd all know what to expect, even the actors and writers, but ESP the fans??!! think about it..

well tv shows usually take time to develop their characters and hit their stride... almost all the great shows took time to gather a following... this show has/had alot of potential, with great actors and plot... if a network out there picked up farscape, firefly, dark angel, the event, sgu, dr who, being human (uk version), true blood, warehouse 13, dollhouse and dexter... they'd be #1 network in three months... guaranteed... ANYONE AGREE??? SAY HELL YES TO ORIONWAY's premise!!!!

Whenever I see the Dairy Queen ads I dont think of Old Spice. I think wow someone actually pitched this commercial and someone else approved and paied for it. Do they not see the message it sends out, eat our food and you too can be a total nut cake and dont even get me started on the car commercial where the dealer breaks into peoples homes. The Old Spice Commercials are awful why would anyone try to mimic them.

So many of these Old Spice wannabe commercials are popping up nowadays... I wasn't even crazy about the original honestly. Although I would wanna fence my future self who is a better fencer. That would be cool.

I thought the Dairy Queen commercial was okay... not hell, but probably not swell either. I thought of the Old Spice commercial immediately, so I do realize it's a rip-off. But I still found myself giggling or smirking at a few moments in the commercial, so it's fine with me.

BONES! This week's ep was definitely among the best ever. We usually don't get to see Emily Deschanel actually acting, and her performance (and everybody else's too) was breathtaking this week. I hope the finale is as good as this.
