Under the Dome Season 2 Finale Review: Jumping Headfirst Off the Cliff

Under the Dome S02E13: "Go Now"

Under the Dome wrapped up its second season with the ol' cliffhanger trick, a moment of madness and mystery designed to leave viewers dying to find out what happens next. Except it was a poor attempt at a cliffhanger, and it had the opposite effect: Not only do I not care about what transpired after Angel Melanie whispered, "Follow me, you idiots! I'm going home!" to a bunch of fools walking around in a Styrofoam tunnel, but I feel ashamed over having spent 26 hours of my life watching this nonsense. I'm wallowing in a pit of despair deeper than any hole-shaped passage to Zenith the Dome could possibly create, and I simply don't feel the need to climb out of it and continue the story.

The ending of "Go Now" wasn't a cliffhanger, it was an impenetrable wall of lead. It was not television, it was community theater written by a grandmother who'd downed a cocktail of antidepressants and gin martinis. It was not primetime entertainment, it was torture. So let us all hang our heads and attempt to make sense of what happened, shall we?

To be clear, I enjoyed Under the Dome's Season 1 finale for all its wackadoodle insanity and bright pink streamers shooting across the sky. There was a certain elegance to its confusion, almost as if it was inspired by the trippiest moments of Fantasia or the dreams of a sleep-deprived child. And to be even clearer, there were parts of the Season 2 finale I enjoyed as well, but that enjoyment stemmed from a much darker place. "Go Now" was pitch black compared to the technicolor wonder of Season 1's "Curtains," full of death, doom, and Dome dominating. In the end, this finally really crystallized the idea that Under the Dome is like the ranting screams of a drunken hobo: entertaining at first, but ultimately sad. And now I feel guilty for initially thinking the screams were entertaining because mental illness and alcoholism are serious issues.

Speaking of mental illness, "Go Now" began with Junior wanting to jump into a hole to chase after Melanie despite the poor survival rate of people on Under the Dome who jump into holes. Instead, the gang put their heads together *bonk! coconut sound* to address the real problem at hand: saving Pauline's life. Oh I forgot! Pauline isn't dead... yet. I totally thought she died. I guess Lyle's plan really backfired, didn't it? He won't be holding her hand in heaven, that sucker, because she's still kickin'. Well, that and he's definitely going to hell. Also, everyone was very chill about Big Jim killing Lyle.

Pauline spoke in dying breaths for the entire episode, and she did so with a mouth full of scarlet tempera paint that stuck to her lips and teeth like a whore's lipstick. She told Julia she was "chosen," but also that someone else was chosen because Pauline was having visions again. Pauline's character made zero sense, and Under the Dome didn't even try explain her. Why did she have visions? Why was her blood so bright red and sticky? Why did she randomly decide to stop having visions? What dumpster was her art school located in? Why did she love Big Jim and hate Big Jim at the same time? I would have left her to die in a pool of melted makeup because I can't stand people who are that wishy-washy. Either have visions or don't, lady! And stop perpetuating these lies about people being chosen. You're only making things worse.

The Domers are apparently much nicer than me, so they decided to try to save Pauline's life. And that's when the Dome got angry. I'm not sure if the two events are related, but as soon as people carried Pauline toward safety, lightning crashed all around as if the Dome God had been angered.

Then Joe had a brilliant idea! He figured that with all the Dome contractions, maybe there was a crack and a wifi signal could get through. He actually said, "We need to get a tablet!" obviously referring to his Microsoft Surface tablet and showing real restraint by not saying, "We need to get my Microsoft Surface tablet with wifi capabilities and Minesweeper! It's available at your local retailer for only $199!" (I have no idea how much one of those things costs.) Anyway, the point is that there was no point, because there was no wifi signal and nothing came of it. He just wanted to say "tablet" so that Microsoft execs would be somewhat happy.

Hey, let's check in on Tom, Chester's Mill's most unfortunate soul. How's it going, Tom?

Yeesh. Sucks to be Tom. R.I.P., buddy. Tell Lyle I said hi!

Next: Page 2, where things aren't looking good for Pauline and OMG did you see her last painting?!?

They should renew the show only so I can read more of Tim's reviews! And a spinoff with Julia running into random things for a whole season would be awesome and make SO much more sense in the long run.

The first series was great, imaginative and gripping, but what went wrong with the second series? It was like a small story, painfully stretched out over the 13 episodes with no real content to each. Expecting it to all wrap up at the end of the second series as it seemed they could not push this out any further, then they finished on another cliff hanger. Do we really need another series as painful as this just to find out how the Dome eventually "departs".

As an avid Stephen King reader, it always surprises me when people say this show is nothing like what Stephen King would write. Have people saying these things only read Under the Dome. Most Stephen King novels and short stories have heaps of unexplained weird things. Every time I see butterflies in this show I always think of Sparrows from The Dark Half. In The Dark Half you learn about the sparrows in the first couple of pages but only learn what they are until the last pages, and even then they are very ambiguous. Pretty much every Stephen King novel has always been about ambiguity. Admittedly the show isn't my favourite, but it certainly isn't as bad as people make it out to be, and season 2 was a drastic improvement on season 1. Plus I love the new Big Jim, my major problem with the TV show was how they tried to make Jim out to be forgivable. In the book he's just this tyrant who gets his own way, or kills you.

In my opinion, that seriously felt like a series finale. In my head, Melanie is like escorting them all to heaven because they all died, but hey that's just me.

Loved the first few but it became a "Dumb and the Breastless" mess. Hey Stephen? What the f? The book was great til the end of it, and now you're going to total the series the same way? Must be gettin paid by the word.

I hope they renew. Not because I think it's cheesy or funny or any of the above. I actually like this show and enjoy the hell out of it. It's one of my favorites and I really do hope they renew it (which will probably happen, the ratings are great.)

I will admit, however, that this is the first time I've laughed while reading one of Tim's reviews. From page 3 on I couldn't stop laughing. Yes, I know the show is cheesy, I'm not debating that fact. It just seems to get a lot of hate (like the first two pages of this review) and I just don't get that. Make fun like the last three pages, sure. That's just funny. It's the mean-spirited edge I don't get.

So thank you Tim for doing at least half a review that entertained me. ;)

Let just say this is a show I really do not mind even if they cancel it with a cliff hanger because no explanation in any finale would be satisfying.

Still ratings ruled just like sharknado !

I honestly thought when the butterflies flew down the tunnel and everyone turned back to the wall that it would be the veiwscreen of an alien spaceship. I think its safe to say "home" isn't on Earth though. All the quakes and contractions are the ship getting ready for liftoff.

Ha! More like "Under the Dumb", amirite?

Has . . . has anyone made that joke yet? Can I write for the show now? Please? I promise, I'm more than qualified. For example, I enjoy wasting time with inanities, and I hate things that are fun.

The MC Hammer reference made reading this blog all season completely worthwhile!
Also, Norrie's little fit at the end of the episode in front of the dome wall was atrocious. Can't the Dome selectively kill awful people? She's the worst.

Oh yeah - when I updated my UTD review to nominate BJ as 2013's Serial Killer of the Year, I completely forgot about Joe Carroll! But then Joe has an army of followers bigger than the first lady's staff to lend a hand - BJ has to roll up his sleeves and wade through the mountain of corpses himself.

i dont find that Joe looking for the tablet is ridiculous here. Social media and emails are really important to kids these days.

The scene where Julia and Barbie saved the little kid was totally redundant. The story moves on with or without that scene.

So when the 3 went into the crater, they didnt bother to just go a little bit more since the butterfly flew to that direction and there was a glow. and they knew there was a crack on the ground. shouldnt they get some kinda planks or something to lay across it so that its easier to walk.

i think melanie has got some crazy eyes at the end.. kinda creepy

I reject all the negative things said about the Dome; season 1 was a joke, but season 2 was an exponential improvement. I'll be honest, I have no idea what's going on but I loved this finale and Big Jim's final hours of repressed mania finally gave me the seriousness I needed! As for the cliffhanger, I HAVE NO IDEA... I'm too in awe of this build-up to even have a reliable prediction :) :)

"Barbie has magic hands, too"

I'd like to test this theory.... repeatedly. :)

But for reals, this season was terrible. Not like last season where it was terrible and fun. Just terrible. Where does Norrie's mom keep disappearing to? What happened to all the nurses that worked at the "clinic". What do the writers have against Tom. I can see why Brian K. Vaughan left the show.

Thank you Tim. great season.

On the Dome side of things... We need more dead people, Stoner Ben and new DJ Phil (?) ... or we are stuck with "REvolution"

At least this show has only 13 episodes.

I have a high tolerance for the absurd but the past two episodes with Julia walking around with the wrapping around her leg.... on the outside of her jeans... was almost too much.
Was it a fashion statement or was it serving some medical purpose?
Then we see her limp, run around, limp, and runaround some more.
I can believe in the egg, butterflies, tunnels that magically appear but that wrapping around Julia's leg is beyond me.

I saw an interview with Rachelle Lefevre (Julia) done prior to the finale airing. She mentioned all the show's fans, and that she is hopeful for a third season. (She even sounded like she would be in it.) CBS hasn't announced anything yet, but the finale's ratings seem quite good (over 7.5 million, and 1.8/5 for those who understand ratings/share).

I wouldn't mind seeing it renewed. Despite quite a few episodes that annoyed me, some of them didn't. Plus I sometimes like productions that are wonderfully, laughably bad, like Plan 9 From Outer Space. I have hopes that a season 3 could cut out some of the annoying things. And maybe they'll consider my suggestion of adding a laugh track. ;-)

CBS doesn't have much else in the summer, the show's budget is reasonable all things considered, and Dean Norris is probably the only actor drawing down a big paycheck. It'll be back.

I saw that CBS' CEO Les Moonves said about a week ago: ... with $2.5M per episode coming in from overseas distributors and Amazon. “We’re in profit long before the shows see the light of day on CBS.” (Deadline.com)

I just hope they spend some of that on making the show. This year it reeked of budget cuts compared to season one.

They certainly manage to keep the guest speaking roles down to a minimum.

But yeah, the Amazon deal pretty much assures it's going to go for a long time...

The delay in announcing might be due to contract negotiations. To semi-joke about it: see which stars will chew their own arm off to get out of the trap (the show), like characters Sheriff Linda and Angie did. (...though seriously, I expect it has more to do with the seeming huge budget cuts season-to-season.)

I saw an interview with Rachelle (Julia) and she was really talking up the fans and renewal. (No news yet, but it has the ratings 1.8 & ~9M+3).) Bring it on, I say. If that puts Tim into a self-hug-inducing garment within walls of comfortable paddedness, well so be it. ;-)

As for me, with Dome gone I feel my mind beginning to re-hinge. I'm considering Mysteries of Laura as a replacement.

Loved the review Tim you now can tune in to the Following Season 3 for more stupidity , how come they repeated the ending of Season 1 with Big Jim going apeshit again. I am looking for one of those butterflies next time I go on holiday as long it doesn't lead me to 80's chick Melanie LOL

Scooby Doo gang are so great lets ignore everyone else and go potholing in a cave great idea if I was barbie I would said to them here is a gun be careful come back and they dead LOL
Pauline dead I will miss her ramblings and crappy paintings although I see the make up artists went all out on gore not ! At least Junior brought back those paint brushes he should be at the bedside of other Domeises then drag the bodies back to the bunker of doom.

Amazing that Julia and Junior didnt climb around the crack on that convenient rock face sorry the alcohol wearing off !
Poor Tom the guy lost his pigs to mad rebecca his wife to freeze dome and on top of that crushed and electrocuted , Julia been shot and impaled and still alive whats going on ? So what next for season 3 back to the 80's in Chester Mill where they meet younger Jim for a Town meeting about Jim ego LOL
