Van Der Beek playing ABC Football rookie

Former Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek has joined ABC's drama pilot Football Wives, which revolves around women whose lives are transformed when they marry NFL superstars.

Van Der Beek will play a rookie; he recently did a two-episode arc on CBS's Criminal Minds.

Gabrielle Union, Kiele Sanchez, and Lucy Lawless were previously announced as wives, while Ving Rhames will play the GM of a football team. Arielle Kebbel will play the younger sister of Sanchez's character.

Unfortunately, Katie's comeback got tangled up in TomKat and was trampled to almost oblivion. The man who should be known as Mr. Katie Holmes is destroying Katie's career! I hope Katie is able to get out of that situation soon.

As for James - I can totally see him as a football player - he's a big guy; In Dawson's Creek the camera angles had to keep James believable as a teeneager so you couldn't tell he's over six feet tall in his socks! Good luck James! And go rescue "Joey" from the clutches of that pompous Svengali!

I'm thinking this actually COULD become a 'The Office' in terms of how well they manage to Americanize it, as opposed to how horribly they messed up Coupling. Only thing is I don't think it'll get good enough ratings, if it does get picked up.
I will enjoy it if this show makes it to air with at least a couple of episodes, I stopped watching the British version because it became too overly dramatic. There is a line on how much drama you can have in a season of what, 6 episodes right, and it just went over that line. With the proper American season of a full 22 eps, it should do better.

does this mean that Lucy Lawless and Kiele Sanchez will be killed off on their current shows?

Kiele Sanchez was just added to Lost.. I don't think i'd leave lost for an American knockoff of Footballers' Wives..

Katie, Joshua and Michelle have all had a comeback in their own various ways over the last couple of years so it's good to see James getting a new role.
