Video Preview: NBC's New Shows

NBC has released trailers for all the shows it will debut this fall, and if these sneak peeks are a preview of what to expect from NBC, then [if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all]. New drama The Event looks like it has a ton of potential, and there's no such thing as too much J.J. Abrams on television; aside from that, the pickings are slim.

Expect a slew of nearly identical romantic comedies aimed at women, a wannabe successor to Heroes, and a comedy that should raise some red flags from some watchdog groups. Ladies and gentlemen, meet NBC's Class of 2010; comedies are on Page 1, dramas on Page 2, and the lone reality entrant on Page 3. Have a look, and let us know what you think in the comments!

Love Bites

Genre: Romantic Comedy
Notable Cast Members: Becki Newton (Ugly Betty), Jordana Spiro (My Boys), Lindsay Price (Eastwick), Jennifer Love Hewitt, Greg Grunberg (Heroes). However, we're still not sure if most of them are regulars or guest stars.
It's Like... Love Actually and Love American Style had a baby that was raised by Sex and the City.
Time: Thursdays, 10pm

Perfect Couples

Genre: Comedic Romance
Notable Cast Members: Olivia Munn (Attack of the Show), the waitress from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia, that guy from My Boys who is also in that video you just watched above.
It's Like... someone decided that what the world needs is a recycled version of Friends. It's also like what will be playing nonstop in Hell when I arrive there.
Time: Midseason

Friends with Benefits

Genre: Comedy, with Romantic Elements (I'm running out of ways to say the same thing here...)
Notable Cast Members: Ryan Hansen (Party Down), Danneel Harris (One Tree Hill). Fran Kranz (Dollhouse) was recently dropped from the show.
It's Like... all these other rom-com shows. Can anyone tell them apart?
Time: Midseason

Outsourced

Genre" Workplace Comedy
Notable Cast Members" Ummm... every single Indian-American actor working today.
It's Like... someone just okay'd racism on TV.
Time: Thursdays, 9:30pm

The Paul Reiser Show

Genre: Comedy
Notable Cast Members: No one. Oh, wait, Paul Reiser.
It's Like... a show from some alternate universe where Paul Reiser is still relevant. Or like being cornered by some weird dude who thinks he's funny and wants to tell you about his life.
Time: Midseason

Can you tell the romantic comedies apart? Does Paul Reiser deserve his own show? And how about that Outsourced?

Next: NBC's New Dramas for Fall 2010

Undercovers

Genre" J.J. Abrams thriller-comedy fest!
Notable Cast Members: Soon-to-be-breakout stars Boris Kodjoe and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, plus that guy I saw at the free UCB Theater improv show (the very funny Ben Schwartz)
It's Like... Mr. and Mrs. Smith, if Mr. and Mrs. Smith were African-American. Still totally hot, though.
Time: Wednesdays, 8pm

The Event

Genre: Thriller
Notable Cast Members: Blair Underwood, Zeljko Ivanek
It's Like... Tom Clancy threw his stories in a blender for a made-for-TV smoothie. And it tastes really delicious.
Time" Mondays, 9pm

Chase

Genre: Action drama
Notable Cast Members: Kelli Giddish (Past Life), Cole Hauser (K-Ville)
It's Like... Justified, but with Jerry Bruckheimer's sense of subtlety.
Time: Mondays, 10pm

Outlaw

Genre: Light-hearted legal drama
Notable Cast Members: Jimmy Smits!
It's Like... House in a courtroom.
Time: Fridays, 10pm

Harry's Law

Genre: David E. Kelley legal drama
Notable Cast Members: Kathy Bates
It's Like... any other David E. Kelley show, slightly Eli Stone-ish.
Time: Midseason

The Cape

Genre: Not-quite-super superhero drama
Notable Cast Members: David Lyons, Summer Glau
It's Like... Heroes, it even has a carnival. Are you kidding me?
Time: Midseason

Did The Event catch your attention? And does The Cape look like a hit or a fizzle-out?

Next: NBC's Single New Reality Show for Fall 2010

School Pride

Genre: Reality, of the makeover variety
Notable Cast Members: Cute kids, gross schools
It's Like... Extreme Home Makeover goes to schools.
Time: Fridays, 8pm

It seems to me that Love Bites is trying to do way too much out of the gate. Aside from the fact that I don't want to watch most of what its talking about, there is no room for substantial character development for all the players. The actors are likable and attractive and will keep my attention for a little while, and I want to say that this show won't last, but it will because America knows what it likes...garbage.

Perfect Couples, with the right writers could be great. I liked what I saw in that preview, but beyond the Pilot, its going to need some clever writing because the plot won't carry it. This show has a 50/50 shot in succeeding past season 1. I didn't like anything about Friends with Benefits... from what I saw. The guy has the demeanor of someone who can play that role, but unless its being played by Joel McHale, I don't see it lasting. We aren't going to care enough about the nobody's to be interested in their dating lives, respectively.

Outsourced seems hilarious. So what if it can be conceived as mildly racist... its what we need right now. The writing is great, the premise is relateable by tons of Americans who have had to deal with calling India, my personal favorite being Dell, and its talking about something relevant to policy being considered in Washington. Its taking an aspect of our economy that sucks and makes fun of it. It seems to be relatively in good taste, and I'm looking forward to the "Better Off Ted" feel of an executive making good of the situation he's stuck with. I think we should give Paul Reiser some more credit. Whoever came up with the title doomed the show from the beginning, but the premise is something I'd watch. Its kind of Modern Familyesque, it just focuses on Paul Reiser.

Undercovers is the black couple version of Human Target, which I enjoyed. I never get sick of a good spy-comedy, especially if its less light-heartened than Chuck. I'm going to enjoy watching this one.

The Event looks incredible. Its like someone took the West Wing, smacked it with 24, dropped that in a Flashforward and mixed it in Lost. I'm pumped to find out what the Event actually is... I'm confused as to why Russel Crowe, Tom Hanks or Leonardo DiCaprio isn't in it, seeing as they've all starred in similar roles... Chase doesn't stand a chance. Outlaw looks decent. Jimmy Smits has been granted ADA, congressman, President and now Supreme Court Justice. Maybe he should just run for real office, he'd probably win. As far as "light-hearted legal drama" its hard to say so while intense music is in the background. If this show thinks it can fix a broken legal system, more power to it, and God knows we need it. Harry's Law is the same thing, but not Supreme... Both won't last - and same as the Studio 60-30 Rock choice, the network will make the wrong choice... as usual.

The Cape is a Batman meets Watchmen that has potential. I don't think it will flop, but it comes down to the focus that will unfold in the following episodes...

Overall, I'm looking forward to this fall.

Paul Reiser need to think "retirement". Love Bites looks good on paper, let's see how long that lasts. Perfect Couples is a goner. I can't even see what Friends with Benefits is about except two bad actors trying to be funny with an old chestnut. JJ Abrams should try having an original idea just once in his lifetime, for fun. And is that supposed to be a comedy or an action flick downsized to tv? Because it looks like neither.

Blair Underwood as the President and it's not even a comedy?! Who ever thought of putting that guy in the same room as Ivanek and think he could act his way out of a brown paper bag is deranged! But I guess any black guy will do, right? It makes for a long and boring trailer with lots of trailer music but what is the show going to be about?

Bruckheimer should give up on tv. Now. But I'll keep an eye on it since Chase might just win the prize for most predictable and one-dimensional lead female next season!

Oh yay... another Jimmy Smits show. Anyone wants to give the guy acting lessons in between leads. With the average duration of his shows, he could use the time.

Harry's law sounds good and doesn't feature a bimbetter or a hunk. I'll give it 4 weeks.

The cape. They ARE kidding, right?.

If the cape is done right it could turn into the next Smallville.

Outsourced and The Event looks okay except that that last one looks like it stole al lot of it's locations from Lost and NBC has a way of making all it's shows trailers look like crap. Can't say Im too excited about No Ordinary Family though I love Lost I'm not a huge fan of JJ Abrams' other shows and it seems like he isn't all that involved with lost anymore anyway

The Cape looks amazing.. It's like batman with a bit of zorro thrown in.. It's nerdy awesome- which probably means it'll get cancelled half a season in.

Didn't want to like undercovers because I dislike Abrams series (I know, heresy on this site), but I can't deny it looks like quality tv. The event could be good, but I think I have had with enough shows where they string you along and then get canceled before you find out what was going on. As for "The Cape"... it looks AWESOME. And yet I know it will be canceled after ~6 episodes because the reality tv mouth breather legions that advertisers chase will never watch something so nerdy.

The only comedy that I think I might enjoy would be love bites! From the previews that I have saw of this comedy show a potential for greatness as long as it keeps the crazy spunk that the previews show. The others look completely like failures as comedies ! I was bored to my to death watching them. Now onto the action thriller TV shows I have to say I'm impressed Undercover looks like it could a pretty good show I'm excited to watch! The Event also has some potential to go somewhere as long as they keep it from being droooown- out like 24. The cape kind reminds a little of heroes but more of Spiderman or Batman feel. I could see myself setting down with my kids a watching it depending on the language and violence well also what time slot it would be in.

As far a reality TV it just plain sucks!!! I think they should just drop the whole reality TV all together.

You just spent all that time talking about the racism of "outsourced" then turn around and look racist yourselves. "Like Mr. and Mrs. Smith only their African American...but still hot, as if normally because their black there would be no hotness at all...so what, Mr. editor would you say if they were the Asian Mr. and Mrs. Smith?

I'll check out The Event, Chase and Harry's Law.

All the romantic comedies looked awful.

The Event looks fantastic. Undercovers looks alright and the rest looks either boring or cringe-inducingly bad.

I am really looking forward to seeing THE CAPE. Am also interested in CHASE and THE EVENT. Am tired of law series so will not watch any of them!

I would watch love bites if it was a movie, not a show. And perfect couple looks terrible. School Pride should be limited to a special edition of extreme home makeover. Without someone like Ty Pennington it is not worth watching.

Love Bites: It seems like that Amanda will be back on tv in the new version of lipstick jungle.
The Event: The show with a large budget with great story, and lead cast- Worth watching?
The Cape. Superhero show with Summer Glau-Definitely worth watching.
Anything else will probably get canceled. I loved all the trailers though.

I think that I will try The Cape, Outlaw and Undercovers but they all seem awful, particularly Chase and the Event. Also has anyone noticed that Outsourced is almost identical to the British show Mumbai Calling, with a couple of details changed and sublety replaced with "a hilarious culture clash"?

Chase is the only one that looks interesting. But, I'll give The Event and The Cape a whirl because I love Summer. I don't have much faith in any of these new shows, though. NBC needs to take a closer look at whomever is in charge of programming.

why does everyone think the cape looks good? are you guys must be nerds , looks totally ridiculous. Now i miss heroes. P.S where the hell is the powers?

Undercovers looks good, Chase and The Event might just be good. Outsourced was unexpectedly kinda funny. Dirty Harry with Jimmy Smits seems interesting. All the comedies look boring.

Outsourced was pretty funny but might get cancelled. Paul Reiser is just going to get cancelled. NBC is just going to remain 4th.

The Cape maybe unoriginal but it has something Heroes doesn't, "ACTION!" I watched Heroes for 2 years (I watched like two episodes in the third season) hoping for some kind of a fight sequence and what did I get nonsensical ramblings. If it has a good story and can keep me entertained I'll watch. They got the Australian guy from ER and the voice of Goliath from Gargoyles and all those Ken Burns movies.

The cape could be interesting as they dont have heroes anymore.

Maybe The Cape can do What The First season of Heroes did for NBC, and get people to watch. It Looks Good.

Paul Reiser looks like a crap Curb rip-off, except for the fat foreign guy - he seems like him and Andrew Daly may be the only redeeming parts. Interesting choice of Breathe Carolina. I'll be watching Outsourced, loved the Detroit bit.

LOL Outsourced looks great too, and shut up guys, it isn't racist at all, if we can't laugh at these things that's too bad.

Chase also looks good after seeing the trailer, I'll have to check it out.

The Event looks like it's trying to bribe 24 fans, in both story and actors, lol. It does look decent though, could be good.

The Cape looks absolutely brilliant, I can't wait. And LOL, Vinnie Jones gets his arse kicked by a little guy, I must see that.

Outsourced was cringe-worthy. What do you South Asians out there think? To the writer...the actor who plays Manmeet is British.

The Event is top of my list - it looks amazing.
Then in a similar vein - Chase. I like strong heroines.
Harry's Law (still haven't guessed where the title comes from) and Outlaw look interesting, but don't know if I'll be immediately sucked in. I like the actors and setting of Undercovers, but am not really into mixing up humor with my action (and fairly lukewarm humor at that). Can't say I'll give The Cape a chance.

Love Bites Friends with Benefits and the Cape look the best from the cast and show description.

why are they canceling Law and Order for this?

Outsourced is based on the independent movie by the same name. The movie was much better at least compared to the trailer. Do yourself a favor and see the original instead. It should still be on Netflix instant queue.

Well at least Fran Kranz won't be associated with that one show.

Harry's Law looks good, The Cape, despite Summer Glau, doesn't really interest me.

im gonna go with;
1. the cape
hope they dont botch it, and :D for summer glau

2. the event
at first it just seemed like some post-war "we're-so-compasionate" propaganda but quickly turned into something quite interseting

3. a maybe for chase.
i dont mind checking it out but something just felt a little... forced or just off
