According to fast nationals, the answer to the question in this story's headline is a "yes." Yesterday's Super Bowl between the Indianapolis Colts and the New Orleans Saints became the most-watched television program ever, drawing 106.5 million viewers (according to early estimates).
That passes the previous mark set by the 1983 broadcast of the M*A*S*H series finale, which drew a whopping 105.97 million (impressive, considering the U.S. had a gazillion fewer people back then). For comparison's sake, TV by the Numbers says there were 83.3 million TV homes in 1983, versus 114.9 million now.
Ratings-wise, yesterday's game was also impressive, pulling in a 46.4 rating and 68 percent share, again, according to quick numbers from CBS. That roughly translates to EVERYONE watched the Super Bowl, and is the best turnout for the big game since 1987. Those numbers could still grow more, as they did last year when official numbers came in.
So I guess the question is: Did any of you NOT watch the Super Bowl? And if so, why not?

I think statistically M*A*S*H still holds the record.Sure there were a couple million more viewers for the superbowl this year, but the world population has also added a billion people, and about 5000% more people have TVs now. So I think MASH should still stay on top.
correction the european champions league final had 109 million viewers so that beats it sorry http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/europe/8490351.stm

Didn't watch, i was at work.... also I'm Canadian, so its less of a big deal.
I didn't watch it.Only reason to watch would be uploaded to Youtube as soon as it aired (the commercials).
Of course people will rather watch something on TV (even on Sundays, which is a dead day for everything else) that is absolutely free, thats why every year many great shows get cancelled all the time. Every yr its the same, it will never change.
I watched it online just now. I thought it was great. But I watched in the Netherlands, so it doesn't count.
No Vikings no watching this year. Too bitter.
Didn't watch, I was at work. which is dumb!! We should shut everything down in the states that have their teams going to the bowl cause everyone in that states gonna be drunk anyway!!
Oh, in the US. Thought he meant on the whole planet. M*A*S*H sure did hold the title for a looong time, way to go.
Love how the "....in the US" isn't added anywhere in the article
Yeah, the 2006 World Cup final had 715 million viewers so that is the most widely watched event internationally, the Super Bowl was the most widely watched in the US.
@Joker...Just pointing out the "fact" that the way the article was worded it was made to sound like it was the largest TV event of all-time worldwide! If it were just the US ratings, there should perhaps be a note saying "According to the Nielsen Ratings in the USA..." or something like that. I was simply replying to the fact that it was not the largest viewing audience EVER! which was stated. If it had said biggest ever in the US I wouldn't have said a thing.
Started watching it then fell asleep. Srsly. Handegg is funner to play than to watch
The Saints were awesome. The Who was awesome. Kinda makes you like football again.
even I watched, and I hate football! ( I was cheering for the Saints) ...but my viewing doesn't count in the numbers as I'm not in the U.S.
I beleive the Olympics has even more than the World Cup, especially the opening ceremonies.
The last summer Olympics in 2008 had over 2 billion.
But since we mostly talk about US ratings here, yeah, this Superbowl was pretty big.
I'm sure just as many people would've watched the M*A*S*H finale, it's just that not as many people had a T.V. back in the '80's. As far as the channel goes, it's the same: CBS Network.
Who cares.. The Colts lost..... The Colts Lost...
I watch it every year. :) That's pretty amazing 106million plus viewers, how about Canada we should figure in there somewhere too.
I actually watched it this year. I usually am just in the room.
It's implying that it's the most watched American program ever since it's talking about the US population comparison between 2010 and 1983. Plus it's between 2 American football teams. World Cup has most the world participating so of course it's different.
Ummmmm....World Cup. Over 1 Billion watching the finals. I think the Super Bowl has a way to go. I think you mean most watched American Program ever?
