Watch the Cool New Trailer for Syfy's Defiance (VIDEO)

For a show that won't even be out for another six months, Syfy's Defiance has been promoted at an awful lot of conventions, with "making of" trailers and plenty of hype. But until now, we hadn't seen much of the series. That's no longer the case thanks to this new trailer, and now we can say in earnest, let the anticipation begin!

Defiance is attempting to do what hasn't quite worked before: melding the world of television and video games. A massively multiplayer online game of the same name is being produced by Trion Worlds (Rift) and will tie in to the series. Both are scheduled for release in April 2013.

But let's focus on the TV portion here, a future-set tale of aliens and Earthlings aiming to share the same crowded real estate. After their solar system is destroyed, a group of multi-species aliens looks to crash on our couch, much to the chagrin of humans. War starts, harmful technology is released, and now the planet is a dump. Thanks a lot, aliens!

The real question is whether this is the new Battlestar Galactica.

SyFy really hasn't managed to pull off the feat of making blockbuster TV since then. Stargate Universe and Caprica were good attempts, and actually pretty show, but nowhere there BSG. I am quite surprised by this, because although BSG was extremly well produced well acted and well scripted, so has many shows since then. What has been lacking is the vision and understanding of what really made Battlestar Galactica not just one the best SciFi shows ever, but one of THE best TV shows ever. The only SyFy show to come close is Stargate Universe, but it didn't quite reach the same epic levels nor weaving in comtemporary polical and cultural fenomenon as efficiently.

The only show getting close would be "A Game of Thrones", which is a HBO show, and as a fantasy show is bound by medieval patriarchical sterotypes. "A Game of Thrones" does a good job of criticizing those conventions, but not to the level of Battlestar Galactica.

Finally, you may conclude that I may consider BSG as flawless and the best TV show ever. Yes, although it may be the TV show ever, the ending and final episode were bad enough to put a thorn in my side that still aches. Even so, BSG should recognized by SyFy as the best they have ever done, and try to truly understand what made it such a great show.

I hope Defiance is that show, but they the need to reinvent the MMORPG game formula in a much more fundamental way than just integrating it with a TV show. If it fails, it may very well be because of that.

Looks very cool *_*

This still won't make up for cancelling Stargate Universe Syfy Channel. We'll see though.

So how is this going to be different than Falling Skies? The video game tie in is a cool idea as long as it's an inessential piece of the show. There are too many gaming platforms and too many non gamers in the world.

I'll watch it, I hope it's good.

I may watch the pilot.

Like pretty much everyone else, I have little love for, or faith in, "syfy" (studiest.name.ever.)

It looks kind of awesome. It also looks like it might suck. It must be SyFy.

Looks wonderful! After they axed all Stargate shows and V I will finally have a new serial about aliens to watch.

I don't count Falling Skies cause it's a soap opera like Terra Nova was.

Interesting....but my worry is given its expected premiere, um, what about Falling Skies? I mean, my first thought was, well, isn't this that just maybe four or five years into Falling Skies' fight? As they likely just introduced the friendlier alien species that appears to have already been established here? I will likely watch it as it probably has one of the spots that isn't occupied by my already established SyFy shows (Merlin, Lost Girl, Alphas, Haven, Being Human and there is something I am forgetting) but those are all usually Mondays at 8 or Fridays at 10.

Looks good, but judging on the CGI, also very expensive. That means it needs high ratings to survive. Let's see how that'll work out.

On the strength of a 30sec trailer i'm sticking it in the maybe pile.

Remaining hopeful.

Expecting little.

Knowing 'SyFy' {groans at stupid channel name} if it's any good they'll cancel it.

Another Terra Nova/Revolution?

But this time with (lots of) Monsters and Aliens?

Without teenagers? I'm in!

Looking good!

At least there's no trace of masses of fake ivy leaves. [revolution reference] ;-)

Julie Benz and Jaime Murray together. They don't even really need a script.

Looks great. It's sure I will add this to my watchlist.

It's been a long time since Syfy's last real scifi show, so I'm not gonna miss this one!

Hmmm...Aliens, Invasion, Human resistance. Isn't there a summer show called Falling Skies already?

Except this one looks like it might be good.

Exactly what I was thinking. Not watching that, not gonna watch this either. There hasn't been a good aliens TV Show since Stargate SG-1 ended.

SG-1 was utter garbage.

Will give this a chance, though the dependence of success on 2 fronts is only making their odds worse.

What world are you living in? SG-1 garbage? Calling SG-1 was a garbage statement.

I'm sorry but SG-1 was not garbage. Varied from good tv to not too good but it was not garbage. Try Season 5 of Sliders, that was garbage.

I wouldn't say SG1 was garbage. It definitely makes it into my top 3 shows with stargate in the title. Just.

Whether or not I watch this when it first airs depends on how many shows I'm watching at the time (I believe there will be a lot, but I'm not 100% sure), but this does look very promising. Even if I don't watch it right away, I probably will later on, as long as it's not cancelled after the first season like so many shows are recently.

Gotta say, it's nice to see SyFy actually trying again.

I love sci-fi, so any new stuff that comes out I always give it at least a chance! Let's hope this one is good.

That really looked good, we're missing a lot of sci-fi at the moment.

How cool would it be if they merged the two worlds completely, like having the events from the game affect the series and vice versa? It would make for some pretty awkward dialogue though. "I know just the guy for the job. They call him cosmicboner42. Never lost a duel in his life."

Only Syfy can make special effects look worse than a decade ago.

Okay I must admit that looked good...great.

I was shocked to see it on SyFy , Their movies and movie effects usually suck BUT this looks good.

So yeah am looking forward to this one.

Oh, that looks like it could be really good.

Not big into video games, but I've kept a close eye on this one ever since hearing some of the names involved with this project (also because I feel like there is a chance that SyFy could return to BSG like quality projects, though I may be kidding myself). Trailer looks good, and the FX are about 5 times what we see on "Warehouse 13" and much closer to BSG quality, and with "Warehouse 13" currently as their flagship program (I think), it looks like they are counting heavily on this one. That could either be really good or really bad for SyFy, and I'm hoping it goes towards good. At least the trailer makes it looks like they'll tackle things head on.

Considering SyFy has a habit of canceling a show after its 5th season (give or take) then they need to start looking elsewhere for their big-show. As Warehouse 13 is about half-way through season 4.

After that, they're running low on well-accepted shows. Alphas is alright, Haven is mediocre, and Lost Girl is a syndicated show.
