West Wing actor Ron Silver dies

The US actor - who played slick strategist Bruno Gianelli in the political drama - died on Sunday (March 15) at the age of 62.

"Ron Silver died peacefully in his sleep with his family around him early Sunday morning," in New York City, said Robin Bronk, executive director of the Creative Coalition, which the actor helped found. "He had been fighting esophageal cancer for two years."

Silver was an Emmy nominee for his recurring role on The West Wing, and also had an esteemed career on stage and in film. His big screen credits included Ali, Reversal Of Fortune, Silkwood and Semi-Tough.

He was also a regular or had recurring roles on TV shows such as Veronica's Closet, Chicago Hope and Wiseguy, as well as The West Wing.

The actor had a long history of balancing acting with left-leaning social and political causes.
