WGN America Renews Its Witch Drama Salem for Season 2

That hexing toad you crammed into the mouths of the people in charge of WGN America worked: The network is headed back to Salem.

Just three episodes into the freshman series' run, the cable channel has ordered a second season of the witchy drama; Season 2 will begin production later this year for a 2015 debut. Salem is WGN America's first original scripted series and the first to receive a renewal.

"At WGN America, we are committed to delivering compelling, brand-defining programming rich with fascinating characters and Salem has done just that," WGN America president Matt Cherniss said in a statement. "Brannon Braga, Adam Simon, the talented cast and our great partners at Fox 21 have opened up an intriguing world that has captivated viewers. We look forward to bringing more great storytelling, scares, and surprises to viewers as the saga unfolds." Cherniss did not mention whether any more amphibians would be shoved down townsfolk's throats.

Salem, starring Janet Montgomery, Shane West, and Seth Gabel, re-imagines the 17th century witch trials in Massachusetts. Except in this version of the story, the accused witches really did cast spells and curses on the residents of Salem. It would be a much more boring series if they didn't, right?

WGN America's second original series, a period piece titled Manhattan that's set against the backdrop of the nuclear era (watch the first trailer here!), premieres in July.

Salem airs Sunday nights at 10pm on WGN America.

I just finished the first season on Netflix. I wish I could've been apart of the ratings because this show is great! The acting is well done and best of all the plot, script and filming is not cheesy by any means. Of course you have to give it a couple episodes to develop the character development but that is every show out there. I cant wait for Season 2! I will be adding this channel to my plan specifically to watch this show! I wish it was on Fox or a a more popular channel it deserves the spotlight!!

I've only watched the pilot so far and it was awful, made American horror story look sane. Does it get any better or worse after the pilot?

I have "kinda" enjoyed the show, I was actually looking forward to next weeks four episode review on this site because I am still not sure about it. It isn't good enough to make me leave GoT, Walking Dead, or Shameless on Sundays (depending on what season it is). But it has shown some promise. But Silicon Valley and Jon Oliver's show are really good too, so I'm still on the fence. I guess its good news that the network isn't, gives me time to comeback to it if I stray a bit.

I've seen the first two episodes. Very surprised at how WGN, of all networks including FX, has allowed the boundary of nudity to be pushed thus far. I've not watched WGN since they had the syndicated Hercules and Earth Final Conflict show, so, so far, good for them.

It is a pretty decent show. Kind of tough to see where they are going with all of this and how exactly they are going to extend it out for a second season and beyond. But The characters are fun and people get blood puked on them. Can't be that.

I'm cool with it so far. Time will simply tell if it's worthy of another season.
It's not like WGN has much of a pool to draw from. What else were they gonna do? say no?
Yeah, right.
Still, I happen to dig the show so far...warts & all
