What Is the Best Original Netflix Series? (POLL)

We can stop pretending Netflix isn't a real network, guys. The online-streaming service is now home to 13 original programs (not including five children's shows), six programs it rescued from other networks, and a ton of stand-up specials and original movies (mostly documentaries). Additionally, half a dozen more scripted series are expected to premiere on Netflix later this year, with at least 10 more following in 2016.

That means one thing: It's time to rank the ones that are out! I very scientifically polled the TV.com writers about their favorite Netflix originals, and used a simple scoring system to compile votes into numerical values so we could add everything up for one final number. Seven people participated, and were asked to rank their five favorite Netflix originals. The scoring system went this way: 5 points were awarded for a first-place vote, 4 for second, 3 for third, and so on. Then all the points were added up and the shows were ranked based on that.

These are the results.

1. Orange Is the New Black

25 points, 4 first-place votes

Jenji Kohan's women's prison drama took the top spot, and that's not a surprise given the acclaim it has deservedly received. Now in its third season, Orange Is the New Black has leaned on a large cast to give it plenty of stories to tell.

2. BoJack Horseman

20 points, 2 first-place points

What spurred me to put this list together was a desire to find out where BoJack Horseman would end up, because it's one of those series that people just don't talk about enough. Probably because it's about an animated drunk horse. But still, it's great to see this great show that's way more connected to human emotions than you'd think claim the second spot.

3. Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt

16 points

NBC dumped this Tina Fey-produced comedy about a woman rescued from a cult to live life in New York City, and Netflix was more than happy to pick it up.

4. Marvel's Daredevil

15 points, 1 first-place vote

The first of Netflix's five Marvel series may have rode in on the swelling wave of superhero shows that is washing over television, but it somersaulted and kick-flipped while the others paddled up to the shore. Stellar action sequences and a fantastic performance by lead Charlie Cox make this a solid pick at number 3.

5. Wet Hot American Summer

9 points

It's not even two weeks old, but this prequel to a cult movie that no one watched in the theater stays true to the original and has fun with actors playing the same teen roles they were already too old for 14 years later.

6. Bloodline

6 points

A perfect example of Netflix shows growing into themselves as the season progresses is this family drama from the creators of Damages. The first few episodes? Ehh, could use some work. But the last few? Wow.

7. Chef's Table

5 points

Netflix makes plenty of feature-length documentaries, but this docu-series about the greatest chefs in the world may be its best doc of the bunch. Traveling from Italy to Japan to America, Chef's Table shows off more than food, it shows the philosophies of culinary geniuses.

8. House of Cards

3 points

Widely considered to be Netflix's masterpiece in the early going, Seasons 2 and 3 fell off in quality and now most people I talk to say, "I used to like House of Cards, but..." Hey, three years ago this would have been number 1. Now? It barely got votes.

Shows not receiving votes:  Sense8 (sorry), Arrested Development (not sorry), Hemlock Grove, Marco Polo, Between, Grace and Frankie, and The Killing.

Which original Netflix shows are your favorites?

Marco Polo, even though House of Cards and Hemlock Grove are both terrifically made and gripping, Marco Polo interests me on more levels.

So the TV.com critics retain their predictability nodding their heads to the cues from 'industry' insiders and lamely following the same preferences as every other critic.
Everyone in 'the industry' knows the Wachowskis are past their use by date. So what if Sense8 was one of the few shows which successfully adopted the Netflix streaming paradigm?
If any self respecting critic pointed that out they would be laughed outta the TV critics club.
The sad thing is the "wachowskis are shit' meme will probably work. We know if everyone in the media says the same thing often enough no matter who incorrect/untrue it may be, the jobsworths and all the rest too self hating to form & hold their own opinions will meekly follow what they are told to.

So even though Orange is the new black' has degenerated into a predictable soapie everyone will watch it because wherever they go they are being told this formulaic piece of garbage is 'cutting edge'. If only - it started out great but the silly decision to keep the same characters year in year out means that the plots become so convoluted and fantastical the show has become a self-parody.

The good thing about this article is that it has reminded me that it's probably time to re-watch an episode or two of Sense8.

Is Peaky Blinders not on the list because it's not considered to be "original programming"? If so that makes sense since I believe it's produced by BBC but that show is highly underrated piece of work.

I am thankful that Netflix picked up the final season of The Killing but would not consider it their "original programming" since several seasons had already appeared elsewhere. They 'aired' it and probably gave it financial support but it was more of an adoption than a birth of a series.

Never understood why so many people like Orange. I couldn't watch more than a couple episodes--same with Weeds, for similar reasons. Subject matter like going to prison, dealing drugs or being in other constantly-dangerous situations (IMHO) aren't at all believable in a campy, humorous setting. They vigorously offend me in ways that shows like Bojack (widely thought of as offensive) doesn't. I'd like to send the writers to prison for a while & see if they find themselves so hilariously clever afterwards.

Yeah I didn't find either Weeds or Orange funny, hardly at all. Orang became a cheesy soap with no substance, and Weeds just wasn't that interesting for more than 2 seasons.

I have only watched Daredevil and it was brilliant! Can't wait for season 2. As for the rest of the shows, I haven't gotten round to watching Sense8 and Wet Hot American Summer yet, so I can't comment on it just yet. However, I have to say that I do look forward to seeing what Netflix is going to produce next as they seem to be able to cater to the audience as oppose to the big networks who are only interested in money.

House of Cards wins out in votes over Sense8 on your poll? Yet when you ask us it's the second highest after Daredevil? This deserves Angela Bassett side-eye, Tim.

Orange is the New Black
Bloodline
BoJack Horseman
Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt
Wet Hot American Summer
Daredevil
House of Cards
Sense8

The first four are really close for me. And all the shows were good. Netflix definitely has the best depth of programming at the moment.

*Except that "the Killing" aired on AMC, originally, so maybe it doesn't count as a complete Netflix-production...still, it holds as a solid show.

I like all of the Netflix Originals I've seen so far: OITNB, Sense8, and the Killing (Mirelle Enos is a little flat/stoic, though, which kinda takes away from the show) - next up on my list is "Bloodline" 'cause it sounds cool.

At the moment, definitely Daredevil.

Orange is the New Black had two terrific seasons, but it's starting to lose me.

I've seen one episode of Sense8, and I liked it, and I might get back to it.

OITNB, Bojack, and Daredevil are unquestionably the best original content that Netflix has produced. You can argue which should be ranked above which, but that doesn't really matter imo

"Original". Netflix, I don't think that word means what you think it means. :-) (They include remakes, resurrections and new series from other production companies under that term.)

Still, the actual originals are quite good. My faves would be Sense8, Kimmy Schmidt and Daredevil. Actually, those are three of only four that I've tried so far. (The 4th was that Canadian TV series, Between. I had to stop watching after a couple of episodes.) I look forward to trying more.

Daredevil, without a doubt. A fantastic first season.

Sense8 is good, shot unbelievably well.

Marco Polo I think they are going to realize what they did right and wrong and are going to correct it this next season and with that I think it is going to be something special.

Bojack, is just funny.

While I enjoy Daredevil it's very dark and I enjoy shows with lighter fare and occasional darkness rather than the other way around.
