What to Watch: Christmastime

Christmas: that time of year when every commercial on TV features sleigh bells, and all the networks start trotting out their tried-and-true Christmas specials. Soon enough, we'll be seeing "Simpsons Roasting on an Open Fire", and Love Actually. And would you like Futurama's Xmas with Evil Robot Santa to go with that?

With one month to go until Christmas, the networks are already airing their favourite Christmas specials. Here's what to watch four weeks out from the big day!

The Family Stone

Friday, 25 November, 12pm - 2.30pm, Seven (M)

The eldest son of the Stone family comes home for Christmas to ask his mother for the family engagement ring -- upon which is a stone. Get it?

Better Homes and Gardens: Christmas

Friday, 25 November, 7.30pm - 8.59pm, Seven (G)

They'll be decorating and baking Christmas treats, we suppose.

(Note: we're pretty sure that the opening titles have changed since 1998, but no one's bothered to upload it on YouTube, and frankly we don't really care.)

One Foot in the Grave: Christmas Special

Friday, 25 November, 7.40pm - 8.45pm, Seven Two (PG)

Victor's grudge against Patrick continues, and they end up communicating through the use of post-it notes. Victor's horse manure turns out to be radioactive, and Pippa goes to an office Christmas party.

Ice Age: A Mammoth Christmas

Saturday, 26 November, 6.30pm - 7pm, Channel 10 (G)

While decorating for Christmas, Sid the sloth inadvertently breaks Manny the mammoth's favourite ornaments. Manny convinces Sid that he is now on Santa's naughty list, so the sloth goes adventuring to the North Pole to get back on Santa's nice list. Sid ends up demolishing Santa's workshop by accident, and Manny, Ellie and Diego have to save Christmas.

...Just the usual, then!

Saturday, 26 November, 7.30pm - 9.30pm, Nine (G)

An elf-raised human (Will Ferrell) tries to track down his biological father in (where else?) New York City.

Four Holidays

Saturday, 26 November, 9.30pm - 11.20pm, Nine (M)

Brad and Kate (Vince Vaughn and Reese Witherspoon, the tallest and shortest people in Hollywood, respectively) attempt to avoid their irksome families at Christmas by planning a trip to Fiji. However, when their flight is cancelled by fog, and they're interviewed on CBS News, they're forced to visit their families. Not mandatory bonding -- anything but that!

Extras: Christmas Special

Tuesday, 29 November, 11.17pm - 12.39am, ABC2 (M)

Ricky Gervais' character Andy winds up on Celebrity Big Brother, along with such stars as a woman who leaked her own sex tape and the mother of a murder victim.

Join us next week for what to watch with three weeks until Christmas!

I enjoyed watching Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer and How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Those are two favorites that I watch every year
