What to Watch This Weekend: Common Law, The Science of Doctor Who, and Breaking Bad

  • 26comments

Welcome back to the weekend, friends. I sure hope it's gearing up to be a good one. If you need suggestions for fun things to do, I've got a few: Take up ice dancing, learn how to be a pirate in the Caribbean, or build a hand-puppet to supplement your split personality. But if none of those work out, you can always watch all of this stuff! Get after it:

What to watch on Friday, August 3...

SPECIAL, 9 pm, PBS
The Barnes Collection
The popular documentary Art of the Steal was based on the controversy behind this collection of art located in Pennsylvania. The Barnes Collection, originally owned and assembled by Dr. Albert C. Barnes all on his own, includes thousands of pieces—many of which from artists like Cézanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Renoir. PBS will explore this grand showcase and discuss the dispute regarding ownership of this private collection years after Mr. Barnes's death.

10pm, USA
Common Law
In "Hot for Teacher," Wes finally admits that he's been having sex dreams about Dr. Ryan, who's (need I remind you) already engaged. That's awkward. Meanwhile, the stunning doc's fiancé turns out to be the guy Wes and Travis need to talk to regarding information on a recently uncovered dead body. Maybe the dream was just a way to bring Wes closer to the necessary informant? How twistedly clairvoyant of him!

10pm, OWN
Real Life: The Musical
It's a little bit weird, but... it's happening. OWN is making an attempt to capitalize on the success of High School Musical and succeeding shows like Glee by crossing the musical theme with reality. It's a real life musical! In tonight's second episode of this new series, a young man sets out to stage a grand "thank you" for his favorite teacher and enlists the help of Dancing With the Stars's Mark Ballas. This could either be a complete train wreck, or a really touching story. Or if we're really lucky, both!

What to watch on Saturday, August 4...

BACK-TO-BACK EPISODES, 8pm, CBS
NYC 22
I hope you're ready for a two-fer! At 8pm, "Ransom" profiles a bodega owner who goes after the men who killed his daughter, a mugging at a local high school, and an injured prisoner who gets sent to the hospital. But that's not all! An hour later at 9pm you get to feast your eyes on "Samaritans," which follows Lazarus as he tries to find a man who once helped him save a boy from a fire and then went missing. Also, Tonya and Ahmad work undercover—but the real gem of the episode will be when Kenny and Jackpot get cornered by an alligator.

SPECIAL, 9pm, BBC America
The Science of Doctor Who
If you're a fan of science fiction but just can't help from wondering whether or not all of the time-traveling, gizmos, and gadgets are feasible realities one day, you should definitely watch this special. Focusing specifically on Doctor Who, BBC America breaks down the scientific practicality behind the show's most mind-boggling exploits.

STAND-UP COMEDY SPECIAL, 10:30pm, Showtime
Kevin Nealon: Whelmed but Not Overly
Most of us recognize him as Doug in Weeds, but from 10:30-11:30 Saturday night, Showtime will host the hour-long comedy special that only knows him as Kevin Nealon, the father. And that's exactly what he'll be discussing—fatherhood. Grab your popcorn and get ready to laugh at what it's like for a dude to change diapers in public and stuff.

What to watch on Sunday, August 5...

8pm, TNT
Leverage
In "The Gone Fishin' Job," the crew thinks they've targeted a self-indulgent debt collector, but soon realize he's also a domestic terrorist funding a dangerous militia. Wow, talk about a two-fer.

9pm, TNT
Falling Skies
While coming to terms with recent casualties, the 2nd Mass tries to move on by making its way to Charleston. Also, Weaver gets some insight into Tector's history and Matt actually starts to bond with a girl who's harnessed. Something tells me that's like playing with fire.

9pm, A&E;
The Glades
In "Islandia" Jim and Jennifer investigate the murder of a lottery winner, but have to travel to a remote island to do so. Could that make for the most romantic murder investigation ever? Probably not, because Jim has other problems—namely his inability to connect with Callie back in Atlanta.

10pm, AMC
Breaking Bad
It's Walt's birthday! What a joyous occasion for him! But something tells me it won't be. In "Fifty-One" Skyler 'considers her options,' whatever that means, and Jesse and Walt get derailed when their plan is complicated by an associate. Sounds like all's still not well in New Mexico—but would we have it any other way?

10pm, HBO
The Newsroom
In "5/1," Charlie gets an anonymous tip about the president's speech which causes his whole team to scramble back to work instead of being able to celebrate for their one-year anniversary party. All work and no play makes the crew a dull gang. Or, in this case, a successful gang?
