What to Watch This Weekend: Falling Skies, The Killing, and Nurse Jackie

Y'all ready for this? [Duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh-duh] JOCK JAMZ! Anyway, it's the weekend! Here are some things to watch during it:

What to watch on Friday, June 15...

ORIGINAL SPECIAL, 8pm, ABC
Countdown to Niagara: The Greatest Megastunts of All Time
So, if you haven't heard, tonight ABC will be devoting its entire primetime to a live broadcast of some dude walking a tight rope over Niagara Falls. To get you mentally prepared and/or in the mood for such shenanigans, here's a special all about the most daring stunts in history! Will it include the time you drove around town with an expired registration sticker? Or the time you ate sour cream a full four days past its expiration date? Either of those things might be featured tonight. Tune in!

LIVE EVENT, 9pm, ABC
Megastunts: Highwire Over Niagara Falls LIVE!
Let's be real, the whole point of this thing is the potential for professional daredevil Nik Wallenda to fall off the tightrope and wash up on the riverbank two days later. If that was not an option we probably wouldn't be watching, right? So good luck, daredevil Nik Wallenda! We are all SORTA rooting for you!

SEASON 2 FINALE, 9pm, USA
Fairly Legal
In the aptly titled "Finale," Kate uncovers a bigger scandal after looking into the firing of a lesbian couple. But none of that work stuff will compare to the REAL drama: Kate will also have to make a decision between Justin and Ben! Whew, just a terrible situation to be in.

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, Investigation Discovery
Evil, I
This here is yet another Investigation Discovery series about real life murders during which you shouldn't eat a sandwich, but the twist is that each episode is told from the vantage point of the killer! Aaaahhhh! I don't want to be in your head, killer! Anyway, TWO new episodes kick off the series; the first follows serial killer Arthur Shawcross aka the Genesee River Killer while the second profiles Gary Heidnik and his assorted atrocities. Feel-good television, basically.

What to watch on Saturday, June 16...

ORIGINAL MOVIE, 8pm, Lifetime
Blue Lagoon: The Awakening
Well, you know, why not? It's not like the original was a masterpiece or anything. So yeah, tonight the old, slightly pervy, underage Brooke Shields vehicle gets a 2012 redo. It'll probably feature less full-frontal nudity seeing as it's on Lifetime, but the plot remains similar: Two youths end up stranded on a deserted island and discover all the thrilling thrills that occur when you look like the people pictured above and have A LOT of spare time.

9pm, Bio
Celebrity Ghost Stories
The main thing to know about tonight's installment of Celebrity Ghost Stories is that one of the featured guests is Reginald VelJohnson! That's right, Carl Winslow himself will be discussing phantasms. The other celebrities include Erik Estrada, Micah "Paranormal Activity" Sloat, and singer Joan Osborne, who as we all know once met a supernatural gentleman riding the bus.

ORIGINAL MOVIE, 9pm, Syfy
Piranhaconda
Michael Madsen and Rachel Hunter star in this very good-seeming Syfy Original about an anaconda with a piranha head. Intrigued? Of course you are. Here's the trailer:

What to watch on Sunday, June 17...

SEASON 2 PREMIERE, 9pm, TNT
Falling Skies
Some shows go on hiatus and you're like, "Oh my heck, the wait is killlllling me! What will happen next???" And then there's Falling Skies, where it's like, "Hey, remember that? Huh. Okay, well, I guess I'll watch." In other words, it wasn't terrible but it certainly wasn't good enough to think about even once since Season 1 concluded. Let's hope Season 2 is more must-watch? Anyway, tonight enjoy a double dose of new episodes beginning with "Worlds Apart" in which Pope takes a big leadership position within the 2nd Mass and Tom returns from his hangout session with the skitters and finds that nobody trusts him anymore. Then in "Shall We Gather at the River," Tom continues to be haunted by his alien experience and Ben grapples with an increasing rage toward the skitters.

AWARDS SPECIAL, 9pm, Fuse
MuchMusic Video Awards
You U.S. readers might be curious about what Canada's answer to the MTV Video Music Awards might be like—Surely it's a more polite and tasteful affair than our homegrown trainwreck, right? Well look at the lineup of performers and YOU TELL ME: Justin Bieber, Flo Rida, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, and LMFAO. Exactly.

SEASON 4 FINALE, 9pm, Showtime
Nurse Jackie
In its Season 4 finale entitled "Handle Your Scandal," Jackie is pushed to her breaking point and it may or may not get her fired! Meanwhile Grace gets enrolled in public school, Dr. O'Hara goes into labor, and Jackie is pulled away by a more pressing ER case. (So she doesn't get fired then? You're confusing me, Showtime blurb!)

SEASON 2 FINALE, 9pm, AMC
The Killing
AMC's most notorious frustrator wraps up its second season tonight with "What I Know," in which Sarah and Holder's investigation comes to a close; Richmond has a change of plans; and the Larsens get a measure of closure from a surprising source! Is it Huggy Bear? (It is probably not Huggy Bear.)

9pm, HBO
True Blood
In "Authority Always Wins," Eric and Bill are interrogated at the Authority headquarters. Elsewhere, Pam reveals how she and Eric first met; Alcide strikes out on his own; Steve Newlin continues going after what he wants; and Jason faces the repercussions of a lifetime of womanizing. All that, plus probably a lot of nudity. Always the nudity.

SEASON 3 FINALE, 9:30pm, Showtime
The Big C
Season 3 closes out with "Fly Away," in which Cathy has an important encounter with a mysterious stranger. Plus Paul has a thing with an American tourist and Sean panics after Cathy fails to return to the dive boat.

SEASON 1 FINALE, 10:30pm, HBO
Girls
Tonight Girls closes out its super solid first season with "She Did," in which Jessa throws a mystery party; Hannah has an incident with Adam; Marnie attempts to be free-spirited for once; and Shoshanna goes on a date. Big things, basically! No, really. This show makes mundane events seem so riveting. Gonna miss u, Girls.

I keep forgetting to watch the season finale episode of Falling Skies. Maybe I will do that soon. But once I heard it was two episode premier, I groaned. And why does Prianhaconda look like it should have so many boobies in it but won't :c

When I first heard about Piranhaconda I thought it was a joke. Then I realized it would be on SYFY and figured that if they could make Sharktopus then anything is possible for them. I agree with the person below. This needs a photo recap.

Best things for the weekend? True Blood, Falling Skies and The Glades. Who would have ever thought years ago that Sunday night would be the best night on TV for the weekend?

I'm still offended that they don't have the legend of korra in this what to watch list. It's better than any of these shows, these are just the ones that most people are watching, not what people should be watching.

Saturday: Euro Cup Soccer.

In regards to "Blue Lagoon: The Awakening", it is not really the first time "The Blue Lagoon" was remade, "Return to the Blue Lagoon" was both a sequel & remake to the original. I remember seeing TBL on TV in '81 or '82, the scene with the blood coming from the sacrificial alter scared me as a kid.

It just surprises me that anyone nowadays would think it was a good basis for a movie remake and throw money at it xD
Reply

I do admit, there are some movies as well as TV series (cartoon & live-action) that I'd love to see remade -- and have been* -- and they may be enjoyable with today's audiences, however, there are some that shouldn't have been.

* Thundercats, Dallas (this one is a remake & sequel), Transformers, etc. Some people may have more to add.

Friday: Stupid Fairly Legal even though this season's been awful. Common Law too even though I keep saying it'll be my last episode (last week's episode worked juuuust enough to get a few positive comments). Late Late Show with Late Craig Lateson.

Saturday: Thundercats, ho!

Sunday: Mythbusters, Metalocalypse, Eric Andre Show with 50% awesome and 50% utterly terrible ideas.

Common Law and Craig Ferguson tonight.

Nothing on Saturday.

Hahaha @ Piranhaconda. This might be the worst of these bad monster movies because I see absolutely no point in the anaconda having a piranha head. The only reason a piranha (and its head) is scary is because it's SMALL and takes really quick but sharp bites. It serves absolutely no purpose on a GIANT anaconda. Ugh. I didn't think these stupid movies could get stupider, but they pulled it off.

Oh, and uh, some PGA Golf, The Killing season finale (oops, thought it was last week), game 3 of the NBA Finals, and Falling Skies on Sunday.

OMFG at Piranhaconda, I wasn't sure if it was a prank vid or not. I think I'll pass on that one, lol.

Will be watching Falling Skies, True Blood, The Glades.

I'm assuming we can look forward to another hilarious "We watched it for you" segment come Monday with Prianhaconda lol

I can't believe Piranacanda is a real movie. The trailer looks so much like a fake film. And the scenes where it kills people look like they came from a video game. It looks like they're trying to cash in on the popularity of Sharktopus.

Michael Madsen in a movie called Piranhaconda? Why I'm I not surprised? It seems like the likelihood of Michael Madsen being in a randomly selected Hollywood produced film is greater than him not being in it. Seriously, that guy works like a motherfucker, far more than any Hollywood actor I know. On IMDB he has 17 credits for the year 2012! And 73 credits for the last five years (2008-2012)!! Wait, what? He even has a credit in a Russian movie from 2009 under the name Maykl Medsen?! If TV.com ever interviewed him, the first question should be "Michael, what the fuck?"

Falling Skies wasn't a very exciting show, to be sure, but beats the pants off a number of others, and given the barren wasteland that is summer TV I'm glad at least ONE show is back.

As for The Killing -- I kinda feel like 'killing' the people who say "Tune in next week to find out who murdered Rosey" EVERY week only to have you NOT find out and be told again.

The Big C's season is over already? Unless I'm mistaken that hasn't been the usual amount of episodes has it?
Reply
Flag
Yeah, the previous two seasons had 13 episodes each, this season only ten. And judging by the ratings, I wouldn't bet on its renewal. Shame, that's another show down the drain without a proper ending.
