What to Watch This Weekend: Fringe, SNL, and the Premiere of Hell on Wheels

Oh glorious weekend, you've come at last! And this one's a 49-hour deal! That's right, USA residents, remember to set your clocks back an hour on Saturday night. Don't worry about your DVR though, it's probably got that handled.

What to watch on Friday, November 4...

9pm, Fox
Fringe
Nina Sharp pays a visit to Walter's lab with presumably awkward results. Plus the translucent shape-shifters return! Aaaaahhh! They are gross.

8pm, NBC

Chuck's guest-star roster continues its awesome streak when THREE nerd favorites—Carrie-Anne Moss, Jeff Fahey, and Justin Hartley—drop by tonight. The plot concerns Chuck trying to get his freelance spy biz off the ground while Morgan adjusts to having Chuck as his new handler.

9pm, CW
Supernatural
Oh Supernatural, you and your episode titles. In "The Mentalists," the Bros Winchester visit the "most psychic town in America" to investigate a series of murders involving spirit mediums. They'll all see you coming, boys.

9pm, NBC
Grimm
Tonight Nick and Hank investigate a robbery involving a "bearly" suspicious family, plus Nick sets out to protect his ailing Aunt Marie. And hopefully no more surprise demon faces because WHOA!

ORIGINAL SPECIAL, 9pm, PBS
Give Me the Banjo
History and comedy nerds unite! Steve Martin narrates this pictorial history of the banjo, with commentary and performances by Bela Fleck, Earl Scruggs, Mike Seeger, and host Rosanne Cash.

What to watch on Sunday, November 6...

SERIES PREMIERE, 10pm, AMC
Hell on Wheels
This is a new AMC show, so legally we are obligated to watch it. Tune in for this modern Western about a former Confederate soldier (Crossroads' Anson Mount) who seeks revenge on the Union troops who murdered his wife. In other words, prepare to laugh and smile a lot!

8pm, ABC
Once Upon a Time
In the real world, Mary Margaret pays a visit to John Doe at Emma's request, and in the fairytale world, Snow White meets up with Prince Charming. But will they live happily ever after, or sensually ever after??

9pm, AMC
The Walking Dead
Tonight Shane starts mentally falling apart after his shocking actions at the high school. (Plus he'll do tons of workouts off-camera, because whoa!) Meanwhile the rest of the gang must decide whether to move on, despite some obvious life-or-death issues that are still happening with their various children.

9pm, Showtime
Dexter
Tonight we'll find out what happens in the aftermath of Sam's shooting, but either way Dexter's Dark Passenger will be seeking revenge. Meanwhile in non-interesting storylines, Deb will find out about Quinn's indiscretions with Clarissa.

10pm, HBO
Hung
Tonight Ray discovers a chunk of his money is missing and all eyes point to Lenore. Plus a new client gets added to the roster. Plus awkwardly sexy shenanigans like always.

9pm, Discovery
Boardwalk Empire
The plotlines continue to swirl when Margaret has an uncomfortable family reunion, Owen seeks vengeance against a rival, and Jimmy frets about a big decision and its effect on his future. Plus awkwardly expensive-looking shenanigans like always.

SERIES PREMIERE, 12:30am, Cartoon Network
The Heart, She Holler
From the questionably sane minds of the creators of Wonder Showzen and Patton Oswalt comes this live-action soap set in the deep South. In tonight's premiere, when an old man dies, his three hateful children (Oswalt, Kristen Schaal, and Heather Lawless) battle over the inheritance. "MUST WATCH." —Price Peterson, TV.com, internet.

Since Grimm has to contend with both Fringe and Supernatural this will be the first time we get a true picture of how well it will do. It picked up much of Fringe's audience last week so we'll see whether Grimm or Fringe wins the night. Supernatural will most likely be in third place.

Friday's going to be a busy night. Not only do I want to catch Chuck, Fringe, Supernatural, Grimm and Sanctuary, but I would like to catch the 2-hour Banjo special. I think I'm going to be turning to some online sources for some of these shows.

Tonight: Chuck, Grimm, Nikita, and the LLS w/ Craig Ferguson. I kind of feel like not watching Chuck -- I realized, while watching the season premiere, that I find it pretty boring -- but since it's the final season, I'll just stick with it till the end.

Sunday: Once Upon a Time, The Walking Dead, Dexter, Homeland, and Hell on Wheels! What a night for drama... awesome.

Not into westerns?
Reply
Flag
You've got a point there. Since it's on AMC, I guess I should watch at least the premiere. But generally: no, I'm not a big fan of westerns.

Maybe the romanticism of the wild west and people building up towns all over the North American continent is somewhat lost on a European. Maybe you North Americans can appreciate it more. What do I know. Also, in general many historical shows are for some reason quite uninteresting to me. Only if they involve unhinged violence and sex (to sooth my crazy mind, I guess) like in Spartacus, do I have the interest to follow them. Since Hell on Wheels is on AMC, it probably won't disappoint in that department.

OK, your powerful method of persuasion has convinced me. I'll watch the show.
Reply
Flag
Haha! My intercontinental telepathic mind powers must be getting stronger. Though, I never considered the European disconnection from the western motif. I'm not a huge fan of the genre myself, but I figured anything on AMC is worth a shot.
