What to Watch This Weekend: The Game of Thrones Season Finale, the MTV Movie Awards, and Teen Wolf

Baby, it's warm outside! But guess what, baby, it's pretty darn warm INSIDE also, and that's because your TV's throwing off some white-hot heat of watchability! Decent things are on, is what I'm saying. Baby, lookit:

What to watch on Friday, June 1...

SERIES FINALE, 8pm, NBC
Best Friends Forever
It's goodbye forever to Best Friends Forever, as NBC closes out another of its half-hearted midseason launches with a Friday night two-fer. In the first episode "Hey Nonny Nonny," Jessica gets jealous when Lennon spends too much time with an old friend. And in the finale episode "Fatal Blow Out," the gals head to Atlantic City for a convention and Jessica ends up questioning her feelings for Rav. (Maybe don't get too emotionally invested in their relationship, dear viewer.)

9pm, USA
Fairly Legal
In "Borderline," Kate and Ben haul their briefs to Lake Tahoe for a bit of mediation but end up getting involved in an unsolved murder! Meanwhile, Justin needs Lauren's help on a case that could very well damage his political future. Who's throwin' acid on your political future, Justin?

SEASON 1 FINALE, 10pm, Starz
Magic City
All the plotlines boil over in "Time and Tide," Magic City's first season finale. Tune in tonight to find out what happens when: Klein gets his hands on Judi Silver; Lily and Stevie's affair gets dangerous; and Ike finds himself at a crossroads. You'll get through it, Ike. We ALL have to deal with proverbial season finales sometimes.

SEASON 15 FINALE, 9pm, FX
The Ultimate Fighter Live
Your favorite live Friday night MMA reality show closes out another season tonight when it crowns its Season 15 champion following a climactic bout in Las Vegas. Who will win? Who will bleed a lot? Both questions will be answered!

Game of Thrones
Oh man, this season. Remember what happened last week? I do: "Blackwater" was a great episode! Tonight "Valar Morghulis" closes out Season 2 with 70 minutes of bad times: Luwin has questionable advice for Theon while on the brink of war; Arya receives a gift of some kind from noted BAMF Jaqen; Jon Snow must survive some kind of test for Qhorin; Daenerys deals with the missing dragon situation; and Brienne puts together a vaudeville act with Jaime. (I think I'm joking on that last one, but who knows!)

ORIGINAL SPECIAL, 9pm, NBC

(Just kidding that is not a movie, but hold up: I think I just had an idea for Harry Potter 9. Call me, J.K. Rowling, and HURRY.)

SEASON 3 PREMIERE, 9pm, A&E;
The Glades
Tonight A&E; briefly retires its slate of sorrrrrta embarrassing reality shows for a double dose of legitimately decent scripted dramas! Meanwhile Callie tries to find a job. Ripped from the headlines!

Teen Wolf! As a non-teen, I am 0% embarrassed to say I love this show; it's hilarious, well-paced, and surprisingly tightly-written. How MTV pulled this off is beyond explanation.
Reply
Flag
I completely agree. I love The Vampire Diaries, and this comment may invoke the wrath of hordes of fanboys/girls, but I honestly believe TVD could learn a thing or two from Teen Wolf.
Reply
Flag
I feel very much the opposite. Teen Wolf is okay, but I would put it behind both TVD and TSC by a long way.
Reply
Flag
I never said Teen Wolf is better.
Reply
Flag
What I meant to say is that TVD is better in every way and Teen Wolf is little leagues and can learn everything from the majors.
Flag
Fan of both, but I prefer TVD, I also enjoyed The Secret Circle - and I'm a 30 y/o male. To hell with target demographics!

Flag
I've always hated the conception that teen dramas can't be compelling to adults, so I'm glad I'm not the only one! They can certainly resonate in terms of the human interaction, deep themes, and complex characters. And so far, Teen Wolf has delivered on all counts. It reminds me A LOT of Buffy the Vampire Slayer--my all-time favorite show--for all the right reasons. And I really don't care that I'm a 27 year old male; I care about these characters and what they're dealing with, and that is what matters and demonstrates strong tv.
Reply
Flag
I've barely watched TVD, but I saw some of its early episodes. I know it's gotten better, but I was super impressed with how high quality TW was from the get-go. And let's face it, you cannot help but root for Scott and Allison; they have some of the best on-screen chemistry I've ever seen. I mean that in a non-creepy way, if it's possible.

Drop Dead Diva and Game of Thrones :D maybe MTV Movie Awards...

Am I the only one who doesn't like GoT? I tried since its such a hit, but fell asleep every time. Its slow, boring and the dialogues are soooooooo much like a tedious read through. They just stand in front of each other talking. To my defence I did grind through 6 episodes before handing in the towel. Give me som Breaking Bad, Awake, Walking Dead, Mob Wives, The Killing, Falling Skies, The Closer, Damages, Burn Notice....etc.
Reply
Flag
I don't agree with all your show choices, but I also fall asleep during GoT frequently. I rewatch, but honestly, I wouldn't have come back for season two if they hadn't finally come up with some actual fantasy at the very end of season 1. I try to manage my expectations. I expect one good scene of dialog with Tyrion and one actual thing to happen per episode. Usually, there is more of the former and exactly the expected for the latter. It is enough, because I like the genre. If the show were set in medieval europe minus the teeny bit of magic, I would not have given it even a full season, much less come back for a second.

I respect your opinion, and I will admit it can be slow at times. But if you just let yourself be taken away by it, get lost in the characters and the world, it can be a really good experience. Season 1 and 2 are both alike in the fact that it takes a few episodes for things to get good, as are the books. But I like the dialogue in it. A lot of dialogue and less action makes that occasional fight scene great, and that huge battle episode that just aired even more great.

Not for anyone, but as FringeFanatic said, it's for people that understand the dialogue is more important than the non-stop slashing and beheading (which there's plenty of that in it too).

That being said, I love Breaking Bad, Walking Dead, and Burn Notice, which are shows more to your liking as well as mine. I just think Game of Thrones is for an audience that understands the benefits of patience and dedication.
Reply
Flag
Game of Thrones isn't for everybody. It's mainly for people who appreciate superb writing and who understand GoT's powerfully compelling dialogue is the catalyst which drives the conflict, and can be just as deadly as any sword.
Reply
Flag
Superb is subjective. It depends on the qualities on which you judge the writing. Technically superb writing can be found in a lot of terrible things. Also, the dialog is a mixed bag, certain characters are well written, and others make me want to cut myself. Perhaps it is the difference between the source material and the screen writers. It has its qualities, but it is not objectively superb. The very idea is an oxymoron.
Reply
Flag
While I subjectively disagree, I certainly trust your opinion on all types of moronity.
Reply
Flag
Hang on now, I enjoy "superb writing and compelling dialogue" just as much as the next fan, but I never got into GoT. Maybe I'd like it more if I read the books? I'm glad that it's bringing more genre stuff to the public and understand that it is incredibly well done, but in the end it ultimately wasn't for me.

I just don't get all the hype and admiration for Game of Thrones. I have read all the books (incl. 6 & 7) seen all the TV episodes, bought the bed sheets, wallpaper and 4FT poster but it just hasn't grabbed my attention yet. I am getting a full back tattoo of the hound next week so we will see if that changes anything.
