What to Watch Tonight: American Gypsies, The L.A. Complex, and Franklin & Bash

What to watch on Tuesday, July 17...

Sometimes I wish the networks would come up with more creative weeknight themes, like "Tyrannosaurus Tuesdays," where within each episode of any given series there'd be a T-Rex sighting—sort of like a live "Where's Waldo" hunt. How much fun would that be? Clearly, I should be running the industry. Here's your TV line-up for tonight:

SERIES PREMIERE, 9pm, NatGeo
American Gypsies
Here's a thought: Gypsies are real. How about them apples? In NatGeo's new reality series, we're introduced to the Johns—a Gypsy family in NYC who owns a psychic shop. In the series premiere, a rival psychic shop opens up a little too close to home, prompting the four Johns brothers, who are already competing with each other to claim the family Patriarch status, to get a little hostile. (Fun, slightly offensive fact: The term "I got gypped" is actually a derogatory phrase referring to Gypsies. So stop using it and stuff!)

SEASON 10 PREMIERE, 9pm, PBS
History Detectives
For just under a decade, History Detectives has been hunting down historical artifacts that make us revisit fascinating moments from days passed. In tonight's 10th season premiere, the team of "detectives" take us back to the controversial Bob Dylan set at the 1965 Newport Folk Festival, when instead of toting his usual acoustic guitar, Dylan came on stage with a full fledged electric Fender Stratocaster. It spurred mixed emotion from the crowd as it symbolized a pretty bold "F you" to folk festival organizers, and even fans, who looked down on electric instruments. Have the detectives located the very guitar Dylan brought to the stage that evening? You'll have to watch to find out!

9pm, ABC Family
Jane by Design
In tonight's "The Backup Dress," Janie prepares for her official date with Eli and Ben gets asked by a minor-league baseball scout to suit up and try out. Meanwhile, Billy keeps his eye on Zoe and Nick, who appear to be getting a little too close for comfort during rehearsals for the school play. And Kate seriously considers Dakota's offer. For just one episode there sure are a lot of life-altering balls up in the air. Let's hope a couple of them fall—you know, to keep us entertained and all.

SEASON 2 PREMIERE, 9pm, The CW
The L.A. Complex
The CW just couldn't wait to get this group of Hollywood hopefuls back on the air. Five short months after Season 1's finale, the series returns with "Vacancy." In it the crew will confront a whole new slough of obstacles. First, Raquel starts doubting herself, questioning whether or not she's made the right decisions, while Nick and Abby attempt to conquer the challenges of being in a more committed relationship. (What's the deal with that, by the way? Since when has monogamy been more taboo than polygamy?) Then, after all of Tariq and Kal's progress, the unimaginable happens—but is it good or bad!? I MUST KNOW!

10pm, TNT
Franklin & Bash
I'm featuring this as a must watch because it's a show that many of you have expressed fondness for, but more than that, because the episode is called "Summer Girls." Doesn't that make you want to break out the cucumber water, spritz it with a lil' somethin' bubbly, and trade in the suit jacket for something linen before watching tonight? I think you should! The title, of course, refers less to summer dresses and sugary drinks, and more to the two female members of the Navy that have been charged with assault in tonight's episode. It's up to Peter and Jared to defend them, but the sailors' commanding officer doesn't think the lawyer duo has the chops for defense. Time to prove some Naval commanders wrong, amiright?
