What to watch on Wednesday, January 23...
8pm, The CW
Oliver and Diggle clash when it appears Diggle’s mentor is involved in some armored truck heists. Will the Emerald Archer heed the advice of the episode’s title, “Trust but Verify”? Well, it’d be a pretty dull superhero show if he just sat around entrusting Starling City’s safety to the honor system.
9pm, The CW
It’s anybody’s guess whether Supernatural will offer a nuanced and open-minded portrayal of the world of live-action role playing, which is the setting of two mysterious deaths in this week’s offering. The episode will also welcome back Felicia Day as Charlie Bradbury. But if nothing else I must doff my hat to the sublime groan-worthiness of the episode title, “LARP and the Real Girl.” Slow clap, Supernatural writers. Slow clap.
“Rise of the Drones” chronicles the development of drone aircraft technology, and their growing use by the U.S. military for combat and espionage operations. Interview subjects include Abe Karem, a key figure behind the advent of Predator drones. Tune in and come to grips with the fact that killer flying robots are literally a thing that exist in and substantially shape the world you inhabit.
Victims are popping up in San Francisco’s Mission District, so the BAU is Bay Area-bound in “Magnum Opus.” Elsewhere, Reid grapples with a personal loss.
In “Chinese Chicken,” George needs some bro-time, so he wrangles Fred and Noah to start a garage band strictly for bro-tunes. But his commitment to bro-lidarity is tested when he hears Sheila’s powerful pipes. It’s possible I’m overstating the bro-factor of this episode a smidgen. Tessa, meanwhile, gets a taste of life as a football player’s squeeze.
WINTER PREMIERE, 10pm, USA
T.K. returns to work in “Frozen Fish Sticks,” but he’s stunned to learn both that he’s been replaced and that the show he’s on hasn’t been canceled yet. Meanwhile, Dani tries to right the ship of her career, and Pittman’s death leads to conflict among Juliette, Nico, and the front office.
SEASON 2 FINALE, 10pm, FX
American Horror Story: Asylum
With a whispered prayer and a weary gasp for air, we come to the end of another season-long trek through the tortuous brambles of Ryan Murphy’s mindspace. I’m not going to lie, it hasn’t been an easy road; you know as well as I do that not everyone made it through corporeally or psychically intact. It is for them, the fallen, that we raise a candle to “Madness Ends”—I'm choosing to ignore, for now, the stark lie in that title—as Lana attempts to bring an end to Briarcliff and Johnny strives to achieve his father’s goals.
