What to watch on Thursday, May 16...
SERIES FINALE, 8pm & 9pm, NBC
After nine seasons, NBC bids adieu to one of its only reasonably well-rated scripted shows with an hour-long retrospective, including interviews with the cast and writers, at 8pm. Then, at 9pm, the 75-minute “Finale” hurtles us forward and picks up several months after the documentary’s airing, as Dunder Mifflinites past and present assemble for a wedding and their last batch of talking-heads. The lengthy guest-star roll call includes Mindy Kaling, BJ Novak, Joan Cusack, Ed Begley, Jr., and Michael "Mose Schrute" Schur... but there's still no official word of everyone’s favorite former branch manager, Idris Elba's Charles Miner.
SEASON 6 FINALE, 8pm, CBS
The Big Bang Theory
In “The Bon Voyage Reaction,” Leonard receives an attractive job opportunity overseas, discombobulating Sheldon and Penny. Elsewhere, Lucy is discombobulated when Raj tries to take their relationship a step too far. Yes, I know I used “discombobulate” twice, but it’s a fun word. Go on, say it out loud. Fun, right? Try and work it into conversation today.
SEASON 12 FINALE, 8pm, Fox
The season’s winner is announced. But first! The top 10 singers congregate for a ten-way group performance. But even firster! Some treacly retrospective stuff, maybe? I mean, they’ve got two friggin’ hours to fill.
SEASON 4 FINALE, 8pm, The CW
The Vampire Diaries
Ghosts swarm Mystic Falls on the day of “Graduation,” which in this town is probably called “Founders' Commencement” or some such. As Damon, Matt, and Rebekah combat spectral visitors with deadly agendas, Bonnie strives to shut the veil and Elena squares off against Katherine once more.
SEASON 1 FINALE, 9pm, The CW
Beauty and the Beast
“Never Turn Back” exposes Cat to the devastating truth about her family history: That her birth father was actually an ocelot, making her half-feline. She was the beast all along! ...Okay, probably not, but you gotta admit, no one would see that coming. Call my agent, Beauty and the Beast showrunner.
SEASON 1 FINALE, 9pm, CBS
As the two-part “The Woman” and “Heroine” close out the season, Irene Adler’s return stupefies Sherlock, who unfurls a series of flashbacks that reveal his sordid past and descent into drug addiction. Meanwhile, Moriarty again sets his diabolical sights on Holmes and Watson, because of reasons. Diabolical reasons.
SEASON 9 FINALE, 9pm, ABC
One doc’s life is on the line, and the bevy of patients driven into Grey Sloan by a walloping bout of inclement weather aren’t doing so hot either. As the crisis wears on in “Perfect Storm,” the staff struggles to stretch the hospital’s dwindling resources.
SEASON 2 FINALE, 10pm, ABC
With the mole’s unmasking imminent in “White Hat’s Back On,” Olivia and crew find themselves in danger. “Grave danger?” one might ask, were one a headstrong young attorney trying to get a rise out of an episode synopsis. “Is there another kind?” the riled synopsis might sneer back in its best Jack Nicholson impression. Then they’d go back and forth like that for a while until the synopsis admitted that Shonda Rhimes will, indeed, order the Code Red in tonight’s season finale.
This week’s homicidal loony decides to play cello sonatas on his victim’s vocal cords, all in an effort to gain the notice of refined aesthete/homicidal loony Hannibal. See, this is what people resort to when you ignore your LinkedIn connection requests. Elsewhere in “Fromage,” Will turns to Alana to seek respite from both loneliness and the weird noises rattling around inside his noggin.
