What to Watch Tonight: The Vampire Diaries (Duh), Community, and Person of Interest

What to watch on Thursday, May 3...

Do you smell that sweet aroma wafting through the air? There's a fresh-baked weekend sitting on the windowsill just waiting for you to come steal it! Careful though, it's very hot still. Might need to hold off for another day or so. Thank you for your patience. Now please enjoy some fantastic television:

8pm, NBC
Community
"Course Listing Unavailable" deals with the aftermath of last week's shocking death: Britta will attempt to put her psychology education to work by counseling her fellow classmates, but Jeff's apathy will prove a tough nut to crack. Meanwhile, when the memorial service turns into a riot, Chang attempts to take control of campus security and that is exactly how WWII began! I think?

8pm, CW
The Vampire Diaries
Season 3's penultimate episode "Before Sunset" promises to be an adrenaline-soaked hour as Evil Alaric attempts to kill Klaus before he can leave town with Elena. Meanwhile everybody's #1 favorite character Abby will return tonight to help Bonnie enact a powerful and dangerous spell. But, you know, Abby's a vampire now, so there's a good chance she'll just be providing moral support. (Question: What are the chances Abby will die this season? 100%?)

9pm, CW
The Secret Circle
Despite what the media or most of your friends claim, prom is not fun for everyone. Sometimes they are hecka awkward! Especially when you're trying to just enjoy some hot jams and not get killed by demon-possessed witch hunters or undead witch hunks. Tune in tonight to see how the teens of Chance Harbor will or won't enjoy THEIR prom.

9pm, CBS
Person of Interest
We're getting to the best part of any J.J. Abrams-produced series, where the procedural aspects drop away and we start getting ANSWERS. In "Many Happy Returns," Reese will be barred from interacting with the next person of interest and so he'll have to go rogue in order to figure out what's what. Expect revelations and/or flashbacks! "We have to go back to the island!" -Reese

9:30pm, NBC
Parks and Recreation
In "Bus Tour," Leslie will scramble to react to a prominent Pawnee citizen's death while she's on a bus tour on her final day of the campaign. Meanwhile Andy looks into a security threat and Chris finds an unusual cure for his depression. (Parks and Recreation marathons?)

10pm, NBC
Awake
Tonight Britten and Bird will look into what appears to be gang violence, but info from Britten's OTHER universe causes him to become skeptical. Meanwhile Hannah reaches out to Rex's girlfriend and Vega starts planning Britten's going-away party. (He should order tons of those black & white cookies and also maybe the two-flavor Doritos and... Other things with dual... Nevermind.)

The only thing worth watching tonight (as far as I can see that ) is Person of Interest.

So it looks like during the so-called summer months not much.

Community sounds like it's going to be very, very broad.

I'm starting to lose faith in Awake after some of the most recent episodes.

No one will convince me to watch The Mentalist. I know it's a completely different approach, but they pretty much stole that premise from Psych.

Also, it's possible Psych stole the premise from someone else, but being biased allows for me to frankly not give a damn, dear.

They really aren't the same. I like them both, but for entirely different reasons. Also, I'm from the Sacramento area originally, so maybe I'm biased. Gotta love those stock shots of the mustard bridge and the ziggurat. Why did they paint it that color?

I felt the same way, watched an episode and it's fairly different, but not fairly good so I walked. It really is too similar a premise even if it is a separate execution. Also, I find the CBI on Mentalist even less believable than the Canadian Santa Barbara police on Psych.

Heard people whining about that a lot, but honestly the shows couldn't be more different so at some point you should just stop comparing them. If you like one of them that's great, just as great as if you like none or both.

You know that's right.

I've heard it both ways ...

in my opinion, yes it is. At its core, it is basically a cheesy action show, almost a guilty pleasure show. While it is very different from other JJ Abrams shows I've seen, one comparison I could make is that it's like Fringe in that the show tells its story through case of the week stories, while slowly but surely setting up a bigger story. And it's this bigger story which helps it avoid being a guilty pleasure show, despite having some elements of one. The writers have done a great job of setting up the characters and the world around them. Brendyman mentioned a similarity between the main character (Reese) and Batman, and that's a very accurate comparison. In fact, the world that the writers have set up seems like a more down to earth version of Gotham City from the Batman series. There are a number of major villains that have been set up over the first season, most with interesting stories (though a few of them need to be developed a bit more). It takes a while to set all of this up, and for the first few episodes, it may seem like an average procedural, but it gets easier to get wrapped up in the story and character interactions the further you go on. So, in other words, while the show does have some of the bad elements from cheesy action shows (you'll have to be able to suspend disbelief), it also captures the best elements of those shows as well (most importantly, it's very fun to watch the main character kick ass), while adding a kind of depth to its story so that it's easy to get drawn into the world it sets up as long as you give it enough time to develop.

Mmmmm, intriguing description.

(Sorry, I saw the name and profile picture and couldn't help myself. This must be like someone walking up to Matt Damon and saying 'Maaaat Daaaamonnn'.)

Very good, imo. One of the best procedurals around. (a bit serialized also)

Its like a cross between minority report and bourne, only with a really geeky guy (from lost) and the opposite in the form of a cia spy with a voice thats a mix of clint eastwood and christian bales batman. If neither character annoys you find it tolerable, i've seen every episode to date and when/if it gets cancelled it wont get to me like house ending will. Hope that helped haha

If ONLY there was a TV show about a group of hilarious people going to community college together that somehow bridged the gap between reality and fantasy on a weekly basis in a seamless manner, with hilarious secondary characters and surprsing insights into human nature every now and again...
