Why Adrianne Palicki Shouldn't Play Wonder Woman

NBC nabbed its perfect woman when it inked former Friday Night Lights beauty Adrianne Palicki to headline its upcoming Wonder Woman relaunch. Palicki is easy on the eyes once they're not shooting out of their sockets like those of a concupiscent cartoon wolf. She possesses the athletic build required of the Amazon princess, and if her volleyball days from FNL are any indication, she can handle physical challenges. She's a great actress (though I never saw Legion) who is ready to carry a show on her back.

But as a Palicki fan who wants to see only good things come to her, she's making the wrong choice. Yes, she'll nail the role. Yes, it seems like a step in the right direction for her career. Yes, it's frickin' Wonder Woman, a possible role of a lifetime. So what's the problem?

The show sounds horrible. Details of the Wonder Woman pilot, written by the very capable Boston Legal and Ally McBeal creator David E. Kelley, have leaked online—and we wish they hadn't. In the series, Wonder Woman's alter ego Diana Themyscira (the surname is a shout-out to WW's homeland) is a successful corporate executive who runs her own company. According to The Futon Critic, that's not a secret identity, as Diana is publicly known as Wonder Woman. Heck, Diana's company even sells Wonder Woman-branded merchandise. Barf.

Not content with just two lives to live, Diana creates a third identity, Diana Prince, to... well, I'm not sure what. Bullet-proof bracelets and the Golden Lasso of Truth are still in there, but the invisible jet has been jettisoned for "sedan-sized aircrafts made by BMW." And there are plenty of Katy Perry jokes about how the singer stole Diana's look. Can you hear my eyes rolling from here? Futon Critic summed up the pilot thusly: "The good: Wonder Woman gets to kick a lot of ass. The bad: Diana seems to sing along every time music is played. The ugly: Diana uses the phrase 'we got bidness' at one point, and flip-flops between being well-versed in our culture (Halliburton, Brett Favre) and having references go over her head (the aforementioned Katy Perry)."

Even with all that shtick, Entertainment Weekly says the script is "a serious, non-campy take" on Wonder Woman. What? That's supposed to be serious? If you'll recall, every single major network the show was pitched to passed on it. Every. Single. One. Even NBC. But needing to gobble up any high-profile project it could, the network apparently changed its mind. This whole thing smacks of NBC's attempt to remake The Bionic Woman, which predictably crashed and burned spectacularly a few years ago.

Adrianne, you're a great actress with so much potential. If the show is as bad as it sounds, this role will only set you back a year before it's canceled.

What the hell guys! Wait at-least until the pilot episode is being aired. And if Ms. Palicki says its okay then who are we to decide. (Irony is that a TV shows lifeblood depend on us viewers). If the show is going to be that bad than the ratings will will be a proper reply

I try not to judge things before I see them, but this thing is going to suck.

I hope I'm wrong though.

I would hope that it does not suck as much as I think it eventually will, especially if they indeed try to make her something much more different from her origins suggest that she is. As far as this edgy, R- rated wish, I'll just say - get a girlfriend! A REAL GIRL!!!

The show will be a major hit. David E. Kelley is going to show us what would really happen if a super-human existed in the real world - and all the legal and sociological ramifications. Kelley and Jason Katims are going to turn this into the hottest show going.

It's odd that all the people are saying this show will end her career because it will get CANCELED, which means none of these people saw her last series "Lone Star", which FOX canceled after TWO! episodes, and her career is just fine, even if the series is bad, her career will still be fine, she still has the "Red Dawn" remake coming out I wasn't into the original, but a major motion picture can always make a network want to pick up a series if the actor has a major film out, and she also in "Elektra Luxx" due out in March, granted none of her films have been big block busters, and she still seems to get work like any other attractive actor, her main problem is finding leading men that she won't tower over. If Will Farrell and Rob Schneider can still get work with their run of horrible poor performing films then there is hope for any actor, and Will Farrell still makes big bucks for acting in films when almost all of his his films have failed to break even.

Sounds worse than 'The Prisoner' remake. At least the new 'V' hasn't been botched up. Yet, anyway.

I don't know how all these campy shows that keep coming out consider themselves serious... I'm looking at you 'The Event' and 'The Cape.'

That does sound like Bionic Woman! That remake was such crap. Like biyakboy said, an HBO version would be the way to go. Superheros and network TV don't go well together.

Nooooo! Why, must you screw with Wonder Woman this way?!?!? Why?!?!? This sounds like such a disaster waiting to happen...ok, so it's kinda hard to do WW without comin' across as a little cheesy, but this is just wrong...guess I'll just have to wait and see though...

Why must they screw with the mythology. They should keep her as a Amazon Princess who comes to the mans world from the island. She could still be a business woman but have that be her secret identity as Diana Prince. Her origins are important, they should not screw it up like this.

Wonder Woman doesn't translate from the comics to the real world as well as Superman or Batman. Some heroes just don't. Linda Carter's show was fun but a lot of shows back in the 70s/80s were fun for that time period. Updating those shows especially into movies almost all of the time end up being corny. I hope NBC learned what not when they greenlit The Cape. If not, NBC will have two crappy superhero shows.

I will still watch it (at least until NBC cancels it). They aren't doing so well with super hero shows.

I think the best place for her is pinned to a ceiling whilst said ceiling erupts into flames. At least that's how I'll always remember her after this show messes with her career.

I fully concur with the article. I'm not that familiar with Adrianne Palicki's work, have seen her only in a few roles. But I'm sure she is a great actress with a lot of potential. That makes me worried, because who wants to see bad things happen to good people? This is a train wreck waiting to happen. In fact, it's like watching Adrianne stepping on to the train which you know does not have breaks. That can only end in a catastrophe. The headline should say "Why NBC Shouldn't Make Wonder Woman". This "modern take of Wonder Woman" sounds very short lived. That WW is somehow a business woman battling with every day problems while saving the world is not going to work. Smallville is an exception because it deals with the years before Clark becomes Superman which gives room to play around with the plot. And at the same time the show has been somewhat true to the back story and seems to be arriving to an ending all fans of Superman want to see. But WW being a corporate executive? Please, give me a break.

A year? No, these kinds of shows are career enders. Observer how Michelle Ryan ran back to the UK with her tail between her legs after Bionic Woman.

This kind of reminds me of that Catwoman movie with Halle Berry. Just an absolute trainwreck of an idea that never should've become reality. What do you do after you win an academy award? If you're Halle Berry, you naturally ruin your progression as a serious actress by playing a cheap knock-off of Catwoman.

Further more I can't believe we had to wait 13 + years for a project to make it this far just to have a horrible joke played on the fans. I am so mad I could scream!!! If it was Batman or Superman they would not be disrespected like this. Again, DC Comics sucks for doing this crap. And put her back in the right outfit already!!!!

Nobody will ever be better then Lynda Carter @ Wonder Woman but I'm fine with the casting choice for the new series. My problem is that DC Comics, Warner Bros. and David E. Kelley is ruining Wonder Woman. If the show is actually holding true to the leaked script and new rediculous outfit I will not be watching this garbage! I am OUTRAGED that DC Comics has actually approved this to happen. Then when the show bombs they will blame it on the lack of demand there is for a Wonder Woman franchise when in fact they have ruined everything about Wonder Woman. What a way to bring in her 70th year. DC Comics sucks!

I can't believe NBC is even attempting this after Heroes and now The Cape. They can't do serious hero fare! They try so hard but that only makes it more laughable. And Adrianne Palicki... wasn't she in the Aquaman pilot a few years ago? Even that show would've had a better chance of being taken seriously than Wonder Woman and that's something.

Things aren't written in stone and I bet they'll start changing things in the pilot script. I think this is good for Adrianne's career if this series makes it to TV (and it turns out to actually be good). Besides if worst comes to worst NBC can reject the pilot and you'll see it on YouTube next year.
