True crime, fictional crime, whodunnits and thrillers -- TV green-lights more local drama.
Underbelly, A Model Daughter: The Killing of Caroline Byrne, Beyond the Darklands, Crime Investigation Australia -- we just can't get enough of gangsters and murder.
TEN's Caroline Byrne telemovie rated a respectable 1.06 million viewers, which although it didn't exactly set the ratings on fire was enough to resonate with key demographics.
That's good news for other networks which recently announced more true crime dramas coming our way next year.
TV1 will embark on its most ambitious local project so far with a 10-part crime drama, Killing Time, to be produced by FremantleMedia Australia. With a writing team headed up by Ian David (Blue Murder) it will follow the true story of disgraced Melbourne lawyer Andrew Fraser.
Fraser had defended some of the country's most colourful characters including Jason Moran, Alan Bond, Victor Pierce, Jimmy Krakouer, and those accused of the Walsh Street murders. But with a cocaine addiction that became a thousand-dollar-a-day habit, he became intertwined with villains and eventually imprisoned for seven years in maximum security.
With key creatives from The King telemovie, Killing Time will be one of pay TV's biggest projects for 2010.
Meanwhile, the Nine Network has announced Wicked Love: The Maria Korp Story, a telemovie based on the 2005 attempted murder of Maria Korp, who became known in headlines as the woman found in the boot of her car.
Headed up by a big name cast of Rebecca Gibney and Vince Colosimo, this 90-minute telemovie follows a bizarre love triangle between a woman, her husband and his lover. Charged with attempted murder, her husband committed suicide on the day of his wife's funeral.
But if it's all too real, SBS is developing a crime drama series, Dusty, to be set in Darwin, featuring the character of "Detective Dusty Buchanon" from Phillip Gwynne's novel The Build Up while ABC will have fun with its light entertainment series Sleuth 101, in which a guest comedian is asked to solve a re-enacted crime in front of a live studio audience.
Produced by the team behind Spicks & Specks, it will be hosted by Cal Wilson.
