A visit from Stefon is always reason to celebrate, and never was his meth-addled presence more welcome than on this week’s SNL. The character—for those of you with social lives—is an aging club kid with a hideous sense of fashion, so whacked out on drugs and lack of sleep that it seems like he might capitulate to heart failure at any moment. He visits Weekend Update to fill us in on New York nightlife, and Bill Hader, the insanely gifted actor who plays him, can barely hold it together as he describes absurd trends like “human luggage” (midgets on roller skates you wheel through airports) and “Jewpids” (exactly what you think they are). I’ve put a lot of thought into why this character is so successful, because on paper, he really shouldn’t be. The extreme specificity of it, the way he hides his face with his hands, the way Hader constantly breaks character—this should not work! But it really does. Long live Stefon.
