WWE Superstar Eddie Guerrero found dead

WWE Superstar Eduardo Gory Guerrero, better known in the wrestling world simply as Eddie, was found dead Sunday morning in his hotel room in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Guerrero, a former WWE champion and a regular mainstay on UPN's Friday Night SmackDown!, was in town to compete in a championship match for a taped WWE Supershow, slated to air on television later this week. He was 38.

After failing to respond to a 7 a.m. wake-up call, hotel security at the Minneapolis Marriott City Center accompanied Eddie's nephew and fellow WWE performer Chavo Guerrero Jr. in trying to establish contact with Eddie. Following a series of unsuccessful phone calls and knocks on his hotel room door, they finally forced their way into the room, only to find Eddie's body lying on the floor.

Upon initial investigation, police stated that there were no apparent signs of foul play and that an autopsy was planned to determine the cause of Guerrero's untimely death.

In the past, it has been well documented that Eddie fought numerous battles with alcoholism and drug abuse, both of which nearly cost him his career and his family. However, in a recent press conference held by WWE chairman Vince McMahon, Chavo told reporters that Eddie found faith in Christianity and had been sober for the past four years.

"This is a huge loss to the WWE," a somber Vince McMahon said. "Eddie Guerrero was one of the stellar performers in the history of our business." McMahon went on to say that "He will be so missed by WWE fans. There is only one Eddie Guerrero."

When asked whether or not anything will be done to commemorate Guerroro's life and legacy, McMahon stated that the Sunday night tapings for its two flagship television programs, Monday Night RAW and Friday Night SmackDown!, will be altered in format, and both will be turned into tribute shows to pay honor to the recently departed wrestler. "Eddie Guerrero, being the consummate performer that he is, would want the show to go on. You are going to see these human beings, really not so much as performers, but as friends of Eddie Guerrero, who want to say something about and to Eddie," McMahon states.

"If it's a tribute show to Eddie, then I'd want to be a part of it, and I know he'd want me to be a part of it also," Chavo added.

Guerrero's unexpected passing is a tragic loss to the world of sports entertainment. Whether it was to his millions of fans around the world or his dozens of colleagues in the locker room, Eddie was equally loved and respected for his infectious personality and passion for the business. Despite his occasional bouts as an onscreen "heel" (villain) on WWE programming, crowd chants of "Eddie, Eddie, Eddie" were constantly heard in almost every town he went to.

Eduardo "Eddie" Guerrero is survived by his wife, Vickie, and three daughters, Shaul, 14, Sherilyn, 9, and Kaylie Marie, 3.

  • hbk4ever4usa

    when i first heard about Eddie, i thought it was a part of the skit, just like the Undertaker because the box revealing what happened was so small on the web site. it wasnt until i read about what happened that i realized it was for real. Eddie was always one of my favorites. i cried for 2 weeks after i found out he had passed away.

  • slacker1961

    There is truley only one Eddie Guerrero who had the heart of a champion. He will be missed for many years to come.

  • kckr884

    Eddie what can you say about him. He will truly be missed by WWE fans all over the world. My sympathy goes out to his family, and Rey and Chavo have to stop their fued (2006), because Eddie would not want it that way. I never saw Eddie wrestle in the ring and i regret that every match i watch. Eddie we all miss you, and heaven needed some lation heat.

  • jjkjnaomi

    rest in peace eddie, you are truly missed and wrestling has never been the same without your cheekiness. you are a legend and will never be forgotten. god bless your family and your precious soul.

    I bought his book after that because I finally got some money, but I could never finish it, because it would feel like the end of Latino Heat and that made me cry a little. I never have finished the book. I'd give anything to see some Latino Heat in the ring again, but I know that will never happen. He was one of the best, and no matter if he was hated by the fans or loved by them, you gotta admit he could make you laugh! I always wanted to meet him. That made me get more into wrestling. And after the recap they showed of the last Wrestlemania, I felt something. Like I want to be in that ring, being cheered or boo'd by the fans. I always have put up a fight. I know it sounds like I'm doing it in the name of Eddie, but I'm not. My sister even talks about me being in WWE. She is wise for her age, and alot of things she has said has happened and she is only 11. Still Eddie is a great man. I loved his theme song, and I think he knows up there that he is missed.

    RIP Latino Heat.moreless

    I was horrified when I heard and the death still hits me so hard. I was even more saddened when I found that that Friday coming up on Smackdown, he was in fact supposed to win the WWE Championship once again. All I have to say that I send my deepest sympathies to his family and the WWE superstars. God Bless Eduardo Gory Guerrero and you are a champion forever in everyone's hearts.<br />

    No one could say that line any better than Eddie Guerrero. He's a big part of the WWE and a very excellent performer and entertainer. Eddie loved the job and always got it done. He may have been hated sometimes but all that was done for out entertainment. We Will Miss You :(<br />

    Great champion. Like most people have said he was one of a kind. You will be missed and our heart go out to the Guerrero family and friends.

  • Itchybonjohnjon

    RIP Eddie, your were one of the few wrestling stars that could do it all. I don't know if they can recover from a loss of Eddie's greatness!

  • Diddy2585

    No matter what role Eddie Guerrero played he was loved by all. He has been in the business for so long and has a legacy that will keep him in every wrestling fans thoughts. I might not be on top of my wrestling like I use to but even i tuned in to watch the tribute to him. It was hard to watch this episode especially with all the wrestlers reacting the way they did. R.I.P Eddie Guerrero aka Latino Heat. You will be truly missed.

  • crzyed28

    Eddie will be missed. He is one of kind. The sad truth is that his death is no mystery. The pressure to perform constantly and the physical conditioning demands that are put by the Wrestling Industry have led to the early departure of many performers.<br />
    <br />
    One day, Mr. Vince McMahon will have to answer for all the victims.<br />

  • draliogirl24

    I just found out about this 30 minutes ago and i was devastated. I will miss u so much Eddie. U were the first wrestler i ever saw in my life. That moment seeing u 4 the first time was one of the greatest moments of my life. Rest in Peace Eddie. God Bless.

  • Cutter2004

    It was a shock to me when I heard about it yesterday. I mean he was a villain that could've been shunned if it wasn't for Batista's respect. He was so close to climbing that mountain.<br />
    <br />
    Eddie Guerrero 1967-2005, buy Showdown, Legends of Wrestling he's in it!

  • Schtoor

    So sad that anyone should leave the earth so early, and then they have to work in the commercial angle "but also fans can continue to celebrate Eddie's storied career and show their support by wearing Eddie's merchandise to live events, or even privately by playing Eddie himself in WWE's long line of video games."<br />
    <br />
    - be sure there will be a DVD shortly.<br />
    <br />

  • Techno_Ted

    I'm glad he was a World Heavyweight Champion, some other talented wrestlers who have unfortunatly passed away (Chris Candido and Curt Hennig to name a few) over the past few years never got the chance to be a World Heavyweight Champion.<br />
    <br />
    R.I.P Eddie, you will be missed

  • Lionheart08

    Rest in peace Latino heat :(

  • RoXy_AnGeL_07

    That is very tragic. I love WWE and Eddie; he will be sadly missed. RIP, Eddie.
